  • In this video we talk about humidity, maybe one of the most stressed about and IMPORTANT parts of keeping tarantulas. I see this over simplified a lot, I see it overcomplicated a lot, so instead of just explaining I wanted to show HOW and WHY I water my tarantulas the way that I do, and what's been working for me. To put it simply, there's some thought into it but not a ton d:

I'm one of those water dish and dry substrate kind of guys. Mold anyone? But you have influenced me in regard to my A. Chalcodes. She molted around June first last year. She started sticking her butt in the air about a month before the molt. Guess what? She is sticking her butt in the air again. No matter how often I tell her it's undignified, she keeps doing it. So since I know she's going to molt, I'm going to play it safe and make it a little more humid.

I do mist or use a pipette to do drips for slings but I dont like them not having a water dish. So all my small slings have small tattoo ink pots for water dishes. They are the perfect size for slings xx

What I do is that I spray single side, usually once a week with a total whole enclosure spray once a month. Also once a month (but never on the same time as full spray) I use a pencil (or something with similar shape/size) to create a hole reaching 4-5 centimetres deep, and pour water there to make sure there will be some residual moisture in the deep substrate.
I don't really like flooding the enclosure, it feels messy for me. I am thinking about putting a small watering tubes in the enclosures to remove the need to create the watering hole every time I am doing deep watering.

Hi, Great Video as always Kat.
I feel like I should put this out here but using a staw as a water dish for slings works great, I often see people having trouble finding water dishes for smaller T's.
-melt the bottom part of the plastic straw and press it together with tongs to seal.
it's the best use of plastic straws :-)
anyways Great Video and looking forward to the next ones! stay safe

Mien are slings so I get a bit nervous about the humidity at times. I mostly keep dry, african species so the info gets weird sometimes. I sometimes see people commenting to keep H.Pulpripes on bone dry substrate not realizing the pic is of an under 1 inch sling. Something like that could possibly kill it.
Also, have you considered keeping your OBT's in a more arboreal type enclosure? They are such heavy webbers and I feel like giving more headpace helps prevent them from webbing down the lide. I have mine kept in an arboreal enclosure. It mostly hangs out in the burrow under but it has a lot of webbing uptop as well.

I'm in North Texas. Found a really nice female A.hentzi a couple of weeks ago. Currently have her in a 14"×10"×9" custom acrylic that I made. She's been posturing and stretching for the last week, so I think she's going to molt soon. I'm on the hunt to find her a big, healthy boyfriend. Also have a wild caught Latrodectus mactans that's about to turn 2. The A. hentzi you have, are a lot darker than the one's I find here. Here, they're a light sandy, almost bronze color.

I put some water on one corner of my new curly hair's enclosure...It is about 1" 1/2 maybe...And it wanted to stay on the side of the enclosure...Does that mean it doesn't want much water in the substrate? Or just acting normal?

I really want to get my first tarantula but I live in a basement suite right now where it's generally pretty chilly - especially at night. Could a curly hair or rose hair tarantula survive alright in a cool environment? Or should i be getting some sort of reptile heat lamp or something lmao

I do the same thing with my T.Vagans where I overflow the water until it flows down the substrate and into it's burrow, my only concern is with the old molts which are in the burrow and I can't remove them without completely destroying the burrow. I think 1 of them is somewhere near where the water flows down but I'm not 100% and the new moult is pushed to the bottom of the hill down to the main burrow area.

I have a question I have an Arizona blonde that is just a little one similar to the first one you misted. what do you feed that tarantula? I usually take a cricket and pull it apart and stick it in there. He’s molted twice in five months but he still tiny. And he won’t kill any pinheads. I do think I’ve ever seen it eat either.

Hey Kat, loved the video. I do the half damp half dry with most of my species too 😊
Do you have any tarantulas that go against what they're "supposed" to like? Ie a damper species preferring dry sub or vise versa? My A. Chalcodes for example I thought was supposed to prefer the dryer side but she's my only T that actively demands a full water dish 😂
