    I loved the video, just shows how ice fishing is sometimes. I use two rods, one aggressive action and one just sitting there a foot off the bottom. There are days where I catch more with the still rod.

  • @isellcatlitter

    match the movement of the walleye to your lure... if they come in slow, move your lure slow.... if they come in like rockets, you can jig faster... also i find perch color jigs like the rapala jigging rap work very well , since perch are one of the walleye's favorite food unless you have ciscoes in the lake...

    I scrolled to the comment section thinking I'd viewed this one already....figured people were just being the typical overly-critical dicks in regards to being too aggressive with jigging/presentation. So I went back to "watch it again," realized I hadn't seen it yet, and agree with the critique several others have already given.
    The video is great, I really enjoyed it. Excellent quality of footage, editing, layout (the picture-in-picture seeing what's going on topside and under the ice simultaneously is bad azz), sound quality is good, and I liked the commentary. I look forward to seeing future fishing outings from this guy!
    Walleyes are a weird fish. How they bite and their overall feeding patterns are a lot more fickle than the other sportfish that inhabit the same waters. There are times when you kind of wonder if they're consciously making an effort to fast. You'd think a fish would want to consume as many available calories as possible simply from a Darwinist perspective, yet walleyes choose to pass up a "free meal" at a much higher rate than other fish. They actually have the ability to create a small amount of current using their gill plates to push/pull water back and forth through their mouths. When they're biting really light, to the point it's hard to tell, and makes you envision your bait/lure being faintly sucked in and out of a walleyes mouth with them somehow barely even touching it? They actually will do that. The bite is strong enough during early ice that you can get away with being overly aggressive, since the fish are typically going to be the most aggressive they get. Later on in the season...really, the closer to the closure in February, they become less and less aggressive [generally] and how you're jigging now that's attracting them and even getting some to commit and bite.....well, there will be days in a couple months where the same tactic will be successful only in spooking them.
    At the 3:10 mark of the video---that's where I'd reccomend holding your rod as perfectly steady as you possibly can. Hold your bait/lure in front of them as motionless as possible. They might sit and look at it for I dunno....ten seconds isn't uncommon for them to stare at it motionless before taking it. I'd reccomend letting it sit motionless until they back off it....just to try it out and see how long they'll wait to take it. After doing that for a bit and getting an idea of how long you should hold it steady for them....then start mixing in some light jigging when they've looked at it long enough to where you don't think they're going to do it. Short periodic, very light jigging mixed in with longer periods of holding it steady will catch you more fish, on most days. Also, don't be afraid to drop it to entice them to bite versus trying to get them to follow it up. If you're a bass guy I'm guessing you're familiar with how much they love to whatever your throwing at them on the drop.
    You can't teach experience, so I hope my advice makes enough sense to where you understand the tactics I'm describing....and hopefully if you do it winds up helping you catch more fish. Thanks for the video! Take Care

      @BryanProkuski  4 роки тому

      Wow, were to begin Matt. Thank you for the in depth comment and glad you enjoyed the video. I love the picture in picture look too. Really adds a nice touch and is very informational to see their behavior down below. I am well aware of the aggressive approach I gave these walleyes and really they seem to just want it to call in then a super still bait to eat. It was amzing that with all that action my deadstick next to me never went down. Had to keep checking to make sure minnow was on it lol... I am going to take all this advice and hopefully perfect my walleye game. I'll be back out there a bunch for them this season. Stay tuned.

    Great videos Bryan. Just found you this week. New subscriber here. Love the underwater footage. It’s awesome to see the fish react to your jigging. We can all learn a lot. It’s hard to know what a fish prefers in jigging style. It’s probably been said already on this thread, but my only thought would have been to slow the jigging down once they came in close. You never know though. I was surprised none of the walleyes grabbed the dead stick that was sitting still next to your active jigging. So that kind of tells me they were just lookers that morning after the sun came up. Cool that you got that much interest….and the larger perch are fun, and usually willing during the day. Great job man….thanks for sharing your experiences with us all!

      @@BryanProkuski I wasn’t aware, that perch were smaller in different areas, I always thought they were babies. I should have known that, because I herd the same about our white tail deer, from people that live in Florida. At one time, we use to get many perch, of 12” or even a little bigger, but that was the late 70ies and early 80ies. The perch at that time looked like small walleye, there wasn’t a limit, at that time. The big fish were fished out, before the DNR wised up. Today the perch that we get are mostly 10” and under. 10”, 12” is a luxury for the average fishermen. We get our share of small perch also, I thought that is healthy. The big perch are in the deeper water in the summer, when you get lucky, we hit the big perch.

      Don’t use a camera when fishing for eyes on that lake trust me from experience you’re much better off going less than 10 feet on rocks and sight fishing them through your hole you’ll have a blast at dawn and dusk. I have over 35 years experience doing this. For perch a camera is a must to keep little ones at bay but eyes don’t like them one bit. If you’re going to use camera for eyes put it down a hole as far as possible from the one you’re fishing out of.

      The bait/lure wasn't the issue. I'm not saying you shouldn't change up what you're throwing at them if you keep having fish come in, give it a look, not bite, and swim off. I agree that most times that happens it's very prudent to tie on something new and keep doing it until you land on one that they're more prone to bite.
      In this case, it wasn't the lure. What deterred them from taking it was how you were presenting the lure to them once they came in and paused to take a closer look. If you had held it in front of them as motionless as you could after they got up to it, stopped, and were staring at it.....you would have hooked the majority of the fish that wouldn't bite as you aggressively jigged it while pulling it up. Most walleye guys are talking in inches if they say to pull it up one or two if a fish didn't bite after holding it still for them. You were frantically pulling it up one or two when they wanted to give the standard look before biting....one or two feet.
      So I agree that changing lures isn't bad advice when they're coming in for a look see but won't commit and take it. In this instance however.....I'm confident that you could have tied on a couple dozen different lures, the most popular ones---the sams as the guides and guys that are hammering them are using, and even if you tied on "Magic Lure X" that was the one Mille Lacs walleyes were biting like no other that day......even then I honestly don't think it would have done anything that would've changed you from having the exact same results the lure that was used ended up producing.
      Just my $.02 trying to help the dude who knows how to make a great video catch more fish since.
