I hate losing lures to pike slicing through your line. I usually switch to using a steel leader once I see that the pike are really active but it still sucks to lose a brand new or favourite lure at first!
@@MC-ml3cn na its to straight out the trebbles mate when you get a snag. 100% 60lb is needed. its better for the fish so you dont leave trebbles around for other fish and birds
Really good underwater video. It seems to me that you need to add a wire trace with a snap link to the end of your line to prevent being bitten off. Traces are a standard setup for most Pike anglers where I'm from (UK).
Thanks Colin! Awesome you are from the UK! Welcome from Minnesota. Summer time I use them but ice fishing don't have to many issues but I will get a leader next season.
Fascinating Video in many ways as someone who frequently fishes Pike, Bass and Perch. It does affirm some of my experience. When bass typically strike, they hit hard fast and generally will not get off the hook, Pike seem more almost casual in their approach. I use spinners a lot and rarely will a bass become unhooked because when they hit they bite hard. Pike are hit and miss and I lose a number just because they only passively strike and the one hook sometimes does not set well. Watching this video seems to confirm that experience. I was blown away by the size, on video some of those fish looked fairly big, but when you brought them up, they were much smaller then I expected. Still interesting though.
This is because bass, perch, and panfish are all suction/inhalation feeders: they don't have teeth, and they usually swallow their prey whole, as they feed by taking a sudden gulp, creating a sharp inflow of water that pulls the prey into their mouth. Pike are toothed fish who rely on their bite to kill their prey and may bite it into pieces if it's too large, so they don't need to inhale the prey. Pike teeth are not patchy and are quite sharp; you can catch them ice fishing because you're a lot more likely to get the hook straight in their lip, but in other seasons you pretty much always need a wire leader as they can easily bite the line off as the first pike does in this video. I've had pike hit smaller fish that I was reeling in and ended up bringing them in with a mouth-shaped imprint of tooth marks on the body.
I always look forward to your videos. Love your peaceful approach and your reverence for the fish. I learn so much from watching these. Thanks for sharing your passion with all of us.
Thanks Ben! Glad you enjoy the videos. I like to keep it real and it's all about keeping these fish healthy and back to be caught again. The camera is a great learning tool. You are welcome and take care man!
That's what I thought was gonna happen, tying the line through the spoon would be good if you were using a short leader of 20 or 30lb braid tied to a barrel swivel to eliminate twisting, then whatever you have spooled. Tie in a barrel swivel about a foot above your jig/ hook to guarantee the elimination of twist. Also, let em peel and put your tip way down in the water in thick ice, the edge of the ice will cut mono as fast as a tooth.
I used to ice fish and was always taught to jig very slowly in cold water as fish are lethargic during these times. But really enjoyed the underwater video. May have to start fishing again.
99% of the time pike don't want anything moving slowly in cold water - i will catch pike on a deadstick or when jigging for perch but when i bought an underwater cam i noticed that the amount of times i actually caught a pike on deadstick/slow jigging was 1 to 10 compared to when i was making noise or jigging with a big spoon/rapala looking for walleye. in the summer i catch untold amounts of "hammer handles" just fishing a worm or minnow off a bobber trying for gills and crappies
I use to LOVE ice fishing with the boys, we even made a make-shift camper we could pull off and try and load back on, we didn't have the money to buy a real ice tent so we used our dad's lumber hahaha. Great video. hope to see more.
Have you ever tried using live nightcrawlers for bait? Bass will eat them like candy. I actually caught a Pike off of live Nightcrawler trying to catch Bass and Bluegill.
it looks like you have a slip bobber in the right hole. Can you explain why you would use a slip bobber while ice fishing vs. simply setting the hook to depth and just dead stick it or jig it? Thanks for the video.
Yes they can! Summer time bass fishing. Always loosing my jigs. Call them $4 pike. And yes, if you can find the weeds in the winter you will find the fish! Thanks man.
The night before you hit the ice take a few ice cube trays and a dozen or so mackerel. Cut the mackerel up and put some meat in your ice cube trays and pour fish oil, garlic oil in the trays. Let it freeze overnight, take the trays with you and drop a few down your hole every hour.

God will make a mark in his or her book for your final visit, maybe giving you a special rock along a heavenly stream for your ETERNITY !
That intro straight out of horror movie haha!
lol... Right! Never know what will pop out underwater.
Just amazing to see those fish like that underwater take the bait. Could You have kept any of them for the fry pan?
This was so humorous. Dang fish !!! Thanks cool camera setup
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed.
Try using a small amount of heavy line for leader, and use a J single hook on lure. Loved the video.
Thanks for the tip and glad you enjoyed!
Really funny that pike smelling the lure :)))))
He knew what was up!
🤣🤣 the pike was too smart for ya 😂😂
Yes they were this day
5 of diamonds always brings them in hot. Like everyone else is saying tighten up the drag and don’t horse them in take your time and play them out. Sure you already know that, but never hurts to get some reminders from time to time.
Yes it does! Had great luck with it last year too. Drag will get tighten for sure after this one. I love a good reminder. Could of used you out there. Thanks man!
@@BryanProkuski no worries man we all need humbled sometimes and that video just happened to be your turn. Keep on grinding and having fun that’s what it’s all about.
@@mikek2488 It's all about having fun. Thanks Michael.
@@BryanProkuskiyou bet. Lately up here in Alberta a pink jig head with a smelt flat on bottom has been hot for pike
@@mikek2488 I hear pike love smelt!
i like how one of the purch were down there and he's like did you just fall out of the sky
This is the fish equivalent of ending up on an alien spaceship.
lol awesome
lol the Bass was like... 'sure, why not'
That first lure had really great action!
I agree!
Awesome video! Only came across it today. Haven't ice fished in years but used to on Farrington Lake (NJ). Would catch 30"- 37" inch pike but we always used wire leader and live minnows.
Awesome! Those are nice pike! They sure do love live bait. Glad you enjoyed the video!
How do you find the weed lines in a new lake? Just drilling tons of new holes and seeing what's down there until you find the edges?
*I've been watching a lot of you guys showing underwater footage, getting to see what's happening while working the jig/bait but noticed it's obviously a lot easier for ice-fisherman or from a pier. I would love to buy an underwater camera setup like this but can you guys think of how you would use it from the shoreline (freshwater or saltwater)? No ice like that much in So Cal.*
You losing that big bass hurt me lol 😆
lol... oh man, that hurt me too. How did he get off!
@@BryanProkuski love your content keep it up
@@hunterwiest6039 Thanks Hunter!
I’ve always found it harder to properly hook fish if you watch them go for your hook. I think it makes you set the hook a little to early.
100% agree. I'll get so caught up watching I don't even set off feel and will miss or lose fish. I tell people if you want to catch fish, use a flasher. Want to have fun, get a camera.
its like an underwater forest. amazing view
Right! Amazing for sure!
What an amazing aquascqpe in the bottom of this lake!
Thanks! Love filming underwater.
Gotta take your time with them Pike 🫠
This is true! Next time.
i have been looking for a good underwater cam for years . How deep under the ice was the bottom ? How much snow was there on the ice _? I wonder if you might need some extra lighting too .
I was fishing in 12 feet. camera was probable 8-10 ft down with a foot of snow on top. This lake is super clear which helps too.
That bass loss 🤣🤣 classic great footage- try scent on lures next time perhaps
Thanks! will do
14:19 at this moment he knew, he F***ED up
lol.. haha right!
This reminds me of me fishing crappies on Sauk Lake. So many chances, so many lost fish. Can get frustrating but gotta laugh at it too.
Right! It isn't fishing without the loses.
I think that guy knows exactly what he's doing. Smart like a fox
lol.. Right!
Growing up in the Southern California desert this is so exotic!
Awesome! Yeah nothing like this in the desert.
Pike fishing without a steel leader, now I've seen everything 😂😂😂
When we were little kids, my cousin used to keep a few large mouth bass in his large 100 gallon tank then try to fish them out. He had bait slapping these bass in the face but none of them fell for the trick. I guess they learned their lessons already.
Lol thats awesome! I always wanted a tank with bass. I feel like they get lethargic in a tank and thats why he probably never caught them. Either way still pretty cool!
This is some of the coolest footage I've ever seen
Thanks! I love ice fishing with the underwater camera. Won't be long and winter will be here and get back out there!
Maybe you should bring a magnet to recover your lures. Magnet fishing.Guaranteed catch of the day. That is really a cool shot of the pikes. Pikes are preying fish. They’ll pop out of nowhere. 10lbs test?
This video should be called, "how to NOT catch fish"!!!!
I got skunked today at Georgetown Lake in CO, fish kept hitting my lure but I just could not set that darn hook! These fish are way smart! Fun!
That will happen but what keeps us going back! Good luck next time out.
@@BryanProkuski Thanks Buddy! Went out yesterday and very first cast I caught a HEAVY female brown, she had eggs so I let her go, I technically caught about 500 fish that day. lol
LOL, at 10:40 when you reeling in the bass, i saw the stick in other hole go crazy, was thinking you had a 2nd fish on
Right! Until I did minute later lol
