I wanna hear too. Shall I tell u mine? Bought one for 2.6k in Feb 2023. About 1.6k then on mechanic work (though I drove it down south from Sheffield on purchase, wasn't perfect but was ok) and about 200 quid on various cosmetic parts I fitted misself. Needs a teeny bit more tlc for the inside but aside from that is sound and a real belter.
At least 2x2500 if the mechanic is his family. Otherwise 4x2500 and north. Didn't bother watching but english e46 bodies are mostly rusted and in bad shape, not to mention it's RWD so it's cheaper than a LHD. Most people are not used to sitting on the right side outside of literally a few countries worldwide.
Yeh a reaction video when he handed it over to his mate was the ending i was waiting on. Usually when he buys cars he says leave it with me and i will get the work done in a few days then words ‘5 weeks later’ comes up in next scene. So maybe if we wait a few weeks, we will get the reaction and whats been done to it. That would be fun just choosing cars for people though😂
Hi Matt. I have a 2003 325Ci M Sport in Imola red with 114K on it now. Have had it for 3 years, absolutely love it. Had a previous identical spec. car for 12 years, took it to 170K it was great, but looked terrible bodily, it had done all its' miles on motorway runs. However... hope this helps anyone looking at these cars. The M54 engine in 2.5, 2.8 and 3.3 version has a damning common fault with piston rings. My car looks beautiful, is completely rust free on top and underneath, looks like it has been really well looked after. Previous owner had it for 16 years. It now uses a litre of oil every 250 miles. Engine is sweet as a nut, no blue smoke from exhaust ever, passes MOT's on emissions no problem, but gums up spark plugs for fun. This shows up on diagnostic tools as random misfires before the plug fails completely and has to be replaced. Nobody who sells you one of these cars is going to tell you that it uses shit loads of oil. Remedy is an engine rebuild at a cost of more than the car is worth. The ring problem can manifest itself as low as 70K, it depends on how it has been driven and how many oil changes have been done. The worn seat looks like loads of ins and outs, exactly the same as mine, possibly short trips, if the oil has been left to the BMW service intervals then it is game over for those engines I'm afraid. Buying one of these cars is a massive gamble.
I hope your friend was impressed, certainly get all the work done plus a service. A very tidy looking car for under £3000. I wish i had a mate like you next time i want a motor 😁
Love this kind of video from you, shows how to buy a car properly. Reminds me of the old Car Throttle videos where they'd try buy a certain type of car for a fixed budget.
please let us know if your pal liked the car, and a follow up on the work that was carried out please, and show us the completed job , it would be really nice to see, also keep up the good work on the channel, thoroughly enjoy your content
Love these. Last summer I was lucky enough to pick up a 330ci auto convertible with fbmwsh, black leather interior and only 90k miles. Ended up using it as a daily ever since. Only done a few small jobs but despite being a little juicy, makes a perfect daily for little money.
A few years ago I had my Fiesta ST2 stolen off my driveway and I needed a car quickly. I bought a Gelb metallic E46 320ci (2.2) manual, it had only done 42k from new and was in immaculate condition. In nearly two years of ownership nothing went wrong. I spent a lot of time on the car getting it up to a high standard condition wise. This led to BMW using my car to promote the launch of the new 2019 three series. I then got the Alpina bug and replaced it for an Alpina D3 E90. I love the Alpina, I have spent a lot of time and money getting it to a high standard but I really miss my old E46. In my opinion it's the best 3 series BMW ever made.
The misfire all cylinders occurs when cold and is down to hydraulic tappet failure. If you keep the revs up when cold you’ll be able to get through it. And the M3 is 343PS
Me neither. And I’m in the trade. Literally as traders go we love a smoker. Usually a 7 or a Lexus large size. But a 330i in swap part ex or bought. This would ‘would’ be driven home enjoyed. One of the BM greats.
Matt, you can transform any BMW in just a few easy steps. Simply add 3D number plates, ultra bright number plate lights, M sport badges and the classic M sport grille slats. Wind deflectors are also a classy option for framed-door model. You're more than welcome.
Hi Mate, I know the chances that you read this post are slim at best, but I just wanted to say thank you so much, I've been stuck here in the Philippines in a small Province for nearly a month with 27 days of rain from two nearby Typhoons, power on and off, no bars, no cafe's just stuck and Thank God for UA-cam and your channel. I’m in Stockport and I’ve just bought a 330ci e46 convertible. Looked at all the same cars! Took your advice in the end Matt and bought the best one I could afford. £4.5k low mileage, manual, top spec, topaz blue love it!
The mirror problem is probably the ribbon cables, usually in the driver's mirror. Cost around £200 for a new module from BMW (or it did around 4 years ago), and replaces the mirror motor and wiring. Don't buy second hand. The facelift E46 330s use ribbon cables for the mirrors and they are junk, they corrode and crack. Mine had the same. You can try sanding the laquer off and soldering a patch wire across the ribbon cable split but it may not work or be a long term fix. I would reinforce the area with some insulation tape if soldering did work. Also never fold the mirrors in on the facelift E46, this can break the ribbon cable too.
A Few months ago I almost had an Imola red convertible 330ci bought. but while waiting on a call back flicking through market place a fully loaded velvet blue 330 clubsport came on line. 1 of 36 in its spec for the same money.. I jumped at it and love it! Some things are meant to be 🙌🏻

My mate should of used you when he bought his 330. It's turned out to be a right shed. Nothing majorly wrong, but it's all adding up. But it is another 20 year old high mileage car with 3 owners, so shouldn't be surprised.
I recently sold my black 06 E46 330CI M-Sport Auto with the same interior as this one + Sat Nav, Harman Kardon, etc. Even with 130k on the clock it was still such a great car to drive and beautiful to look at. A modern classic for sure.

Another good video, a champagne car for lemonade money. I had a BMW 318i convertible as a company car a few years ago. It wasn’t fast but it was a lot of fun. I did 70000 miles in it in 2 years and it was 100% reliable. You really can’t go wrong at that money😎👍
Excellent purchase Matt. Interesting that you didn’t want to travel 65 miles to look at one when you’re in the trade; I’ll travel anywhere for a good car at the right price, but I guess I’m not costing my time into the purchase. Regardless, £2k for a relatively rust-free e46 330i convertible is a bargain (and it’s still ULEZ compliant, for your southern viewers).

Also for the fella who knocked on my door to say he needed water for his Sky-meter, it's not Sky-meter, it's a Sim-mi-tar. Love the VLOG!
I have the same 330ci for 6 years now, but it's a coupe. I also had a check engine light when I bought it. After checking everything, it turn out to be the valve cover gasket. If fuel trims are high it's usually air related, not ignition coils, injectors etc.
Liked this video format, also the psychology of setting a budget that includes an allowance to do some repair and smartening up work. Manages our own expectations.
I was suprised to see the Club Sport was missing the extended front chin spoiler, the rear spoiler was wrong and it had what looked like an M3 exhaust 🤔 Love the Convertible I've owned my e46 325ci sport convertible close to 10 years and absolutely love it. Great video 👍
Back in the day, when e46s first came around onto the used market the e46 330ci was effectively a very similar proposition to an e36 m3 in terms of performance / use ability / value
I do miss my time living in the UK. Lots of cars not available in the states. Cheap beaters were abundant as well. I would buy a cheap daily driver with a years MOT and sell it off for another just before the MOT expired.
With an E46 and especially a 330, I would want to look at the rear diff mountings as the torque tends to cause stress cracking in the body where they mount - plus rear brake pipes.
Best car, one off, I had was a e34 525i sport M engine, rocket, bulletproof amazing. The pipe mob under the rear arch did not kill it but the bloody fox at 95mph did as the £600 alone for front bumper + all the other damage was more than she was worth in the end
Outstanding technology today , and this must be a great help for people looking to buy a car. Well done 👏 job Sir , and another must watch video , and you have great insight for helping people to get a car 🚗.
That was a brilliant video Matt,I actually felt I was there with you doing the deal, there's something exciting about buying a used car like that even better if you as you say (come up smelling of roses!).more videos like this please.
Had quite a few e46 convertible years ago silver paint with a blue roof and black interior on 18" M sport wheels always look the best, tge 320 are too slow the 325 is a good one
You considered doing a video where you help viewers buy cars. Like you show them how to look, what to look out for and maybe record their reaction when they drive off. Could maybe have some conditions to avoid them blaming you for negative things. Or maybe could do it over zoom or something.
Those lights are not xenons, they are simple halogen ones. Xenons should be self leveling, you got a lights switch where you can rise or get down the headlights.
Lel i did this Matt mate back in Feb this year. It hadn't seen any action in two years as it was parked during the pandemic. It cost me 2.6k and i drove it down from Sheffield at night in Feb. It needed some tlc but oh man could it move. Still got it.
Great video. Bit of a change from your normal theme but the variety is fine IMO. Not a BMW fan but that did look like a nice example for not much money!
I hope your friend was pleased, to be fair, for £2100 that is a lovely car. I do like a beige interior, makes an interior so much lighter and less dark. And being a 330 to boot. I bet after the traditional mini-valet it would look an absolute knockout, I think you've found a proper bargain. Compare that to the patchwork one with both front wings in different colours to each other and the rest of the car for a similar price... What's the odds on the blue Club Sport popping up on the channel with a contrite Matt saying he couldn't help himself...
More videos like these please Matt. Very watchable, hunting for a good desirable car to budget 👌👏

I would buy a cheap daily driver with a years MOT and sell it off for another just before the MOT expired.
Loving the wireframe satnav, takes me back
With an E46 and especially a 330, I would want to look at the rear diff mountings as the torque tends to cause stress cracking in the body where they mount - plus rear brake pipes.
Cheers for putting the orange bar at the bottom of the screen so I can zoom past the advert section 👍👍
Best car, one off, I had was a e34 525i sport M engine, rocket, bulletproof amazing. The pipe mob under the rear arch did not kill it but the bloody fox at 95mph did as the £600 alone for front bumper + all the other damage was more than she was worth in the end
Yummy. I had one...lovely car...watch out for front arch rust and expansion tank issues.😊
Enjoyed that. Brought back good memories of my own 330 Ci auto coupe. Lovely car to drive.
Great cars the e46 330 I've owned one for 4 years now sadly getting rarer and rarer especially finding nice examples
Love the channel BTW
Glad you enjoyed it
Love the E46. Am tempted by the B3 3.3. Rarer and less troublesome than the M3...and cheaper!
I'd recommend it. Convertibles also suit the character.
I've got a E46 320cd and I love it, cream leather interior and loads of power! What more do you want for £3000!
Would love an update and after picture of the car, if work was carried out!
Not watched this yet, but already, I reckon it's the best video on UA-cam for some time...
wanna see a follow up video with all the work done :)
Great video Matt. More of the same please. Going to invest in a Carly.
You considered doing a video where you help viewers buy cars. Like you show them how to look, what to look out for and maybe record their reaction when they drive off. Could maybe have some conditions to avoid them blaming you for negative things. Or maybe could do it over zoom or something.
In Zambia 🇿🇲 vehicle locking auto at 20km/h is a must
Those lights are not xenons, they are simple halogen ones. Xenons should be self leveling, you got a lights switch where you can rise or get down the headlights.
Ah ok good point
Lel i did this Matt mate back in Feb this year. It hadn't seen any action in two years as it was parked during the pandemic. It cost me 2.6k and i drove it down from Sheffield at night in Feb. It needed some tlc but oh man could it move. Still got it.
I had a low mileage example silver with black leather and lowered, it is my biggest regret selling that car it was perfect
Great video. Bit of a change from your normal theme but the variety is fine IMO. Not a BMW fan but that did look like a nice example for not much money!
Eml is likely on due to the air boot 1 pipe - very common issue and it’s likely to be this as the lambda code was on too. It’s a very easy fix
Who does not like E46 with 6 cylinders :) on the good note you don't have to worry about sagging head liner when you have convertible
What an absolute beaut in such quick time! Well done, Matt! It is a car for every occasion for 2k!
Gotta do more videos like this the odd challenge makes great content this is great to watch
Shame the clubsport is missing both the spoiler and the front lip as they really make the look. Wish I'd got one when I got my 46 5-6 years ago
They are both in the garage for it, just not had time to do the intended work on it.
@@TheZedShed haha no worries more wondering why someone would have taken them off unless its had a replacement bumper and boot?
What a find Matt well done!
Nice one, Matt... 'Worth getting everything done on it, as you suggested. 👍
