Oh how I've missed diving the north coast of Ca since our abalone season has been closed! Great to see abs, Puget Sound king crabs and the lingcod protecting egg masses on your dives.
Yeah man, it was a pretty lively couple of dives. We have abalone here, but they have been off limits since the mid 90's. I've never had the luxury of harvesting them. At least I don't know what I'm missing I guess!

I've heard of divers saying the water isn't clear to see anything, so glad that video caught so much on there, glad you and an amazing day, got some crab home. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Visibility is definitely better in the winter but I've had some 50' vis days in the summer too. The algae in the water is what typically destroys the visibility around British Columbia but algae blooms come and go with the tides. I've only had a few dives that were a complete write off, having a decent dive light is a saving grace on those days.

Dude I love your videos and I would love to go diving with you sometime! I'm originally from Mukilteo Washington in the Puget sound but I now live in Portland Oregon. I lived in the Puget sound most of my life and I've never caught or even seen a Puget sound king crab and as someone who loves crab I would really love to try one!!!
Awesome man cheers, if you're on Vancouver island and it lines up feel free to reach out. PSKC are off limits in Washington. I believe the only 3 crab that can be harvested in that state are redrock, Dungeness and tanner crab. They are open in Alaska though!
Always amazing seeing the ocean that clear and so full of life!! Depending on where I end up living this coming Summer I might have enough to make a late summer visit to the island, I'll have to buy or rent some gear but the water is calling me!!!

Discovered you researching freediving and spear fishing in Vancouver. Doesn’t look like much is done around Vancouver, but lots on the Island. My parents live in Nanoose bay, so maybe I’ll run into you at some point. Keep up the great content. Thank you for capturing it.
Yeah man, my pleasure. I'm happy to be able to share the experiences. There are lots of people freediving around Vancouver, but not too much to harvest unfortunately. Some fun recreational dives around though. Nanoose is amazing, it's probably my favorite dive sight on the eastern side of Vancouver Island.
@@carboncomplex I had no idea of that. Thank you/ I used to go crabbing at Deep Cove near Vancouver, which would see, to be far too deep to support vegetarian urchins and there were SO MANY sunflower stars. I must assume they must have other things they also eat.
They eat crabs, other bivalves, brittle stars, snails and slugs. But urchin are a main food source for them. But yeah, without sun star urchin populations exploded and kelp beds have disappeared. It sucks.
I love your videos! The voiceovers about sustainability and harvesting are so helpful. I’m curious where was the dive site for the Puget Sound Crab??? Is it legal to harvest them in any area?
Thanks! Sustainability is key. Hmm, they are closed in Marine Protected Areas, like Whytecliff park, and also in dive closures. For example, the discovery passage in Campbell River is a no harvesting while diving area. Same with Ogden Point in Victoria. I'd love to share the location but I try to be fairly discreet with specifics on the internet. Sorry!

Haha you're not wrong. A good fillet glove would be a good investment. Rockfish have venomous quills too, they hurt like hell when you get stabbed haha.
Great video! We live around the area and freedive close to that location for puget sound but never end up finding any (mostly because we go like 2-3x max in the winter). Do you know if they're still around close to the end of March? You've motivated me to brave the cold water :P
Haha cool man and thanks! They will start thinning out pretty soon but you can find them during all times of the year. I found them in August off the west coast. Your chances are definitely there highest in Jan/Feb though.
Yeah man! Divingsports has been hooking me up for years. Kian, the owner and operator of Immenso, was my first dive buddy. We took our training together in 2018. When he asked if I wanted to be a part of Immenso it was a no brainer. Great quality equipment and they put money back into our local communities and have some pretty neat plans for recycling old wetsuits. Our Abalone were heavily fished to the point of near extinction. They have been off limits since the 90's. Unfortunately, poaching has prevented any serious rebound in their populations. People f$+_+ING suck.

That sculpin you spotted is a large male Scalyhead sculpin, they develop some incredible cirrus on their heads

Soak the clams in salt water and corn meal to purge the sand. If you use a clear bowl you can watch them purge the sand and it looks pretty cool!

Haha you're not wrong. A good fillet glove would be a good investment. Rockfish have venomous quills too, they hurt like hell when you get stabbed haha.

Great video! We live around the area and freedive close to that location for puget sound but never end up finding any (mostly because we go like 2-3x max in the winter). Do you know if they're still around close to the end of March? You've motivated me to brave the cold water :P
Haha cool man and thanks! They will start thinning out pretty soon but you can find them during all times of the year. I found them in August off the west coast. Your chances are definitely there highest in Jan/Feb though.

Yeah man! Divingsports has been hooking me up for years. Kian, the owner and operator of Immenso, was my first dive buddy. We took our training together in 2018. When he asked if I wanted to be a part of Immenso it was a no brainer. Great quality equipment and they put money back into our local communities and have some pretty neat plans for recycling old wetsuits. Our Abalone were heavily fished to the point of near extinction. They have been off limits since the 90's. Unfortunately, poaching has prevented any serious rebound in their populations. People f$+_+ING suck.

7mm open cell. But a high quality neoprene design for cold water freediving. Currently I'm wearing the Beauchat Prestige. I believe in that video I had the Cressie Seppia. Both wicked suits.
