This is awesome, I live in Victoria and I'm extremely interested in learning about foraging, both in our forests and our oceans. I've always wanted to learn to dive, but the ocean just kinda creeps the me out and I wouldn't even know where to get started!
The ocean is a gnarly place that's for sure. I'd like to learn how to harvest from the forest too. Mushrooms and all that. As for the ocean, I have an educational playlist which can offer you some help. There are a bunch of freediving courses on Vancouver Island as well.
@@PNWSamson lots of fun ! not much fish where I was thoe .. lots of crab ! super tasty ! oin to van this week end and bringing the gear over there. friend said he knows a spot ,be a nice surprise !
@@superkittybtc oh nice man! Yeah some good crabbing areas around Vancouver for sure. Unfortunately not much for fishing with Lingcod and Rockfish being closed. But some fun diving regardless! Britannia Beach shipwreck is pretty epic!
Hey Chris thanks for the videos , as for the clams i always leave them in a bucket 24 hrs in saltwater from the ocean with a handfull of oatmeal which seams to help purge the sand out , never in freshwater as they will die . I have tried without the oatmeal and ended up with too much grit . Thanks again , keep them coming .
Great Intel thanks man! I've read that they will suffocate if left in the same water for too long as they will deplete all the oxygen. How much water do you use? And when you say saltwater do you mean from the ocean or just table salt? Thanks!
@@PNWSamson i always use water from where i got the clams , but even if you have to transport them and get saltwater from the ocean somewhere else thats ok and 24 hours no problem , i use a bucket that is only used for clams obviously ..no detergent . fill the bucket and they last alot longer than you think , keep them in a shady spot . i have been doing this in powell river for a few years with no problems . Thanks again for your videos , my wife and i really appreciate your work .
Thanks man and no way! I'm always super surprised when people watch my videos from abroad. I never thought my audience would expand beyond the west coast of Canada. I appreciate the support/comment and views!
Thanks man! And no worries there. I watch a lot of UA-camrs and don't always comment so I completely get it. The algorithm is a strange beast and it picks up on certain things from what I've read!
what do you do with the clams to purge the sand? Did you just put them in fresh water for them to spit the sand out? how long did you do it for? Did it work? How many times did you rinse and repeat. I love those little clams but the sand does suck
Awesome your kids eat the seafood you catch.. mine won't touch it. Have you ever dove around the winchelseas islands? There's some shallow reef areas that look interesting.
Ooooeee score on the new su-weet suit. *Diving Sports Main St Vancouver* {y'all that read comments} is an outstanding source for all so much. I ocean, lake, and pool swim-got hooked up with new Cressi fins this Spring at DS store. What a score sourcing the various seafood {see food n' eat it--great cooking Jasmine}.The babies are so fabulous in all these videos, haha. Omg their reactions are too fun. Cannot wait to see their faces when they start clam digging with you. Wow that wood sculpture is outstanding. Great edit as usual.
Thanks! And I'm going to bring em out claming asap. I'm sure they will both love it! Will also make them appreciate it that much more. And couldn't agree more with diving sports and also that wood sculpture. Cal's dad is a talented man. Cheers!
this content is amazing!!!! best PNW freediving stuff on UA-cam! Thanks for the shout out! Truly, these videos are helping our ocean inspired community around Vancouver Island! Thank you for sharing your passion and how our beautiful ocean gives us ocean people JOY!!!!! You ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks dude, it was super nice to meet you! If you ever get into freediving, or if I ever get into scuba diving, let's link up for a dive! Thanks again for the belt, stay safe man!!
32! 😲 Did you really say "getting up there" my friend? We need to talk. Please bookmark this video and put a note in your calendar to watch it when you, like me, are twice as old as that. I am very glad to see that you are using your time wisely. Happy birthday, Chris! 🎉 By the way, you might have made cinematic history by being the first to document a child kissing a crab. 👏How she will feel about that when she becomes a teenager is anybody's guess. Be prepared. You might have some explaining to do. 😉
Haha true man! Definitely not getting up there but it feels like it sometimes. Skateboarding and boxing injuries, lack of physical activity lately... Don't feel in my prime that's for sure haha. I have footage of her kissing a pile worm too. That makes the crab one look like nothing! I hope she appreciates these videos when she's older. Time will tell! Thanks for the comment man
Well now, that was a tasty looking episode!!! Oh, and a very Happy Birthday Chris!!! I hope you had an amazing day, and that the year ahead is full of Joy, Love and Prosperity!!! Take care!!
Maybe we don't bounce like we used to but we aren't "getting up there" lol Great video! Hope you had a fun birthday. I finally made it into the new diving sports store, so nice! Bought several things I didn't go there for 🙈
Too bad the visibility was poor but you made the best of it anyway. Personally not a fan of Oysters (long story) but the crab and clams, yes please lol...
Yeah man, still a fun time. Ironically, I dove that second spot again last week and we had 50' visibility. Crazy how much of a difference 7 days can make. The Oysters were really good, but I'd imagine one bad oyster could turn one off of them for life. I don't think I'll ever eat em raw...
I honestly don't know much about it. How would that affect my UA-cam channel? I'm always hesitate when it comes to any new government policy. It most definitely won't be a good thing I'm thinking aha.
Love your videos. I live in parksville and am very passionate about the ocean as well. Also the same age as you with a daughter the same age range as your kids. It's a goal of mine to learn to swim as I would love nothing more than to be able to dive down and explore the ocean. I love your Videos bud. Keep it up. If I ever see you around I'll be sure to shake your hand. You're very inspiring.
Thanks for the message man! We definitely sound like minded. A friend of mine learned to swim to be able to dive and he's doing really good. It's definitely possible man! I'm sure we'll cross paths, if the weather ever warms up at least haha. Thanks for the comment!
Yeah man, it's weird though. Puget, redrock and helmet crab don't seem to cause any problems it's just the Dungeness. I've been eating Dungeness since I was a little kid and never had problems. Not sure what changed!

What he said! Tell us the dirty details.
