It's actually the other way around: a passive EQ is all cut; an active EQ boosts when you dial it above 12 o'clock. The clean channel on the JSX is passive, the other two are active.

Great sounding video! Man I'm so happy to see that more and more people are rediscovering old Peavey amps (especially the Ultra line) and having love for them again. I'm 38 and I've owned a shit ton of amps over the years, but I always come back to Peavey. Always. I won't speak for you of course, but I noticed people are pretty much mind blown when they compare them to more expensive and modern amps (especially when you look at prices). In this day and age, where everything is freaking expensive, I think guitar players aren't that looking for the next big (and pricey) thing as they used to. They want a good tone for ''cheap'' and that's understandable. Yes I have my Ceriatone King Kong with the Chupacabra voicing (and it sounds great!!) for our band practices but I have the same fun playing with my 3120 to be 100% honest. I owned the Ultra plus 120 a while back that I shouldn't have sold and hell, because of your video btw, I decided to buy a JSX from someone who upgraded it with a choke and a Mercury transformer. I can't wait to play with it! I love that the Ultra line amps can be really tight AND aggressive without the need of a boost...the Ultra Plus 120 is really old when you think about it haha It was ahead of its time. Cheers!

Have one and will never let it go.. it will most likely be buried with me. Great video.. the clean channel was not from a classic 50.. it was a brand new channel... no gain because satch wanted a pure clean that would be great with pedals. (The fx loop on this amp is awesome). The crunch is from the classic 50 and the ultra channel is from the 5150ii/6505+. Threes a promo video out there with Joe when it debuted.. it will tell you everything you need to know about the head.

When you have the effects loop on, is there a bit of extra noise ? Like a little buzz or hum that is especially heard with higher master? Mine has a bit of that but I'm not sure it always did. It's not dirty jacks or anything like that. Maybe a cold ground solder or something ??? Or maybe its normal...I need another JSX to try with my cab so I can find out.

@@NinecoreNeil well i didn't notice the noise until I got the amp recapped , which lowered the overall amp noise that creeps up gradually as capacitors get old. Not sure if the quieter amp allowed the loop noise to be heard or if something happened during the recapp or even on the drive home. Not a horrible noise but I seem to remember the loop being completely quiet when I bought it back in 2005.

If you think JSX's aren't satisfying on tone. Then either you're using speakers/can that doesn't pair up well it it, or using V30's which make these amps sound like absolute shit. And or terrible pickups. I can put my stock JSX against any high gain amp, and it will either sound as good or surpasses it in tone...
