  • Yo!! What's up, dudes?!?! Robert Baker challenged me to the "Top Ten Album Challenge," so these are my top ten albums that influenced my guitar playing. Probably not a lot of surprises here, but maybe one or two. I nominate PDXGuitarFreak and Garrett Peters to list their top ten most influential albums.

    4. Lee Ritenour - Captain Fingers
    5. Santana - Moonflower

All of these albums made me want to pick up and put down my guitar at the same time. I have to give props to Joe Satriani, Steve Morse, Frank Zappa and too many more to mention. It is very hard to get a list narrowed to 10 but this is the best I can do for now, probably change tomorrow lol.

Kiss Alive 2 was in my collection in 79. The non live song Rocket Ride is one I remember as being a massive amazing Ace solo..and sure you played it. Many people don't understand how important Ace is in the guitar world, he influenced many bands and players. In Oz Kiss Alive 2, Double Platinum and Love Gun were all in the record stores just prior to the very different album Dynasty that was a MASSIVE album in Oz even though people in the USA bag it. In shops here today you will still hear I Was Made For Loving You. The guitar in Jeff Wayne War Of The Worlds - Thunderchild was for me an awakening in 1978 after an ABBA love affair. The album I often go back to is not really guitar. Beach Boys Pet Sounds.

The sad thing about being a teen in the 2000's was the idea of the album was gone. It was more about downloading a single song (probably from Napster) apposed to listening to an album so this list is hard for me to do.

Get a USB vinyl deck, go to HMV, eBay or similar and buy some vinyl. Enjoy! Some albums will captivate, others will have highs and lows. You're human so you can't help what speaks to you and what doesn't. But I know that albums that I can listen to all the way through are bands that I would name in my top 10.

Of course it was hard to visualize, not only was it unheard of but we didn't have video back then, haha!! Great list! Loved the reminisce on the Gilmour comment as I had a similar thing happen. I walked off the stage after jamming out on cocaine (the song folks), and my brother said "nice soloing Clapton" and it floored me.

Met Vivian a Heathrow Airport for 10 mins in 1990 when I was 20, just before he got in Def Lep
Probably the only famous musician I ever got to chat with!
His advice was stop twiddling and write songs
Did I take his advice, yes for about 5 years and got back into twiddling once I realized I hated being in bands!
So sad to hear about his health issues!
Ride The Lightning, Queen, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits and Surfing got me into guitar

I can remember that floppy record single in Guitar Player magazine, of The Attitude Song by Steve Vai ! We were all so blown away in high school by that song. We recorded it to cassette and played it in the car for weeks, some days we'd sit silently decoding the song, other times wed laugh at how off the wall his playing was, and still other times wed just rock out the whole way to school. What great days those were...

  • @efilnikufesin2069

Uhh actually Eddie was doing tapping before Alive ll and Alive ll came out on 77'. KISS was in LA in 76'at the Starwood when Gene approached Van Halen and later flew them to NY to audition for Bill Aucoin and Ace saw Ed tap and this was 76' before KISS went to on the 1st Japanese tour so technically Ace did that tapping part from the Shock Me solo because he saw Ed do it at the audition for Bill Aucoin in 76'.

Fun to hear the influences and why. And something I hadn't thought about, that Quiet Riot with their Slade remakes is what really broke metal into the mainstream rock radio. I remember they were on the TV show Solid Gold. LOL, never saw a metal band on there before.

  • @MFGreth
    @MFGreth 9 років тому +2

This was hard, I had to really consider what influenced my playing and not just slap together "my favorite" albums. If I did that, there would be a massive difference.
    11. Funkadelic - Maggot Brain --- I know I'm cheating, but give me a break. Consider this a bonus. I'm less of a shredder when I solo nowadays, and more of a groove guy. The opening solo, 'Maggot Brain', is my favorite solo of all time. The funky and atmospheric nature of that track is a big influence on how I like to shred.
    10. Nazareth - Hair of the Dog --- a lot of my early influence was classic hard rock, and the riff on Hair of the Dog is one of the things that made me want to pick up a guitar in the first place.
    9. Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark --- My first exposure to black metal, I never even considered that guitar could be used for more than just rhythm, riffs, and showing off. Bathory proved guitar could be part of a greater atmosphere.
    8. Motorhead - Ace of Spades --- One of my first exposures to heavier music. It may not compare to the Cannibal Corpse I would be listening to only a scant few months later, but strumming along to this album gave me an appreciation for heavier, crunchier sounds.
    7. Van Halen - I --- Eruption blew my mind, and Eddie's whole play style, what he was doing, was so new and different from what I had been hearing before it. Mountain, Deep Purple... it was all blown out the water. It was interesting, because growing up I mainly took suggestions from my dad and used my chore allowance to buy cassettes from the mall... and when my dad suggested Van Halen, it was like a whole new world of guitar possibility opened. Sure, I had heard Jump and stuff on the radio, but I never really absorbed how intricately Eddie played until I played this over and over.
    6. Misfits - Walk Among Us --- I had a huge punk phase, and it stemmed ENTIRELY due to a love of Misfits. The riffs are betrayed by a perceived sense of simplicity. There is so much raw power in those horror themed tracks, you really just have to appreciate how Doyle and Danzig could really crunch into their strings.
    5. Slayer- Reign in Blood --- If Eddie blew my mind with his solos, imagine how blown away I was when my uncle handed me my first thrash album. The absolute speed and ferocity of their playing was something I couldn't believe existed, and yet when they ripped into the solo portion of Angel of Death, I was floored.
    4. Mastodon - Leviathan --- I was a young teen when this came out... 14, actually... and I was pretty well exposed to heavy metal by this point. In fact, I was a young aficionado. I was even already a fan of Remission, their previous album to this one. But when Leviathan dropped, everything changed. There was such a fantastic and odd blending of style, sounds, and techniques used that I had never thought to even consider, and just proved you really had to just open your mind and let the guitar take you where it wants to go. Changing tempos, changing techniques on the fly... remember in Megalodon when there's suddenly a country/southern rock flavored riff to break up your expectation, right before slamming into a speedy chug? Fuck yeah.
    3. Led Zeppelin - IV --- Black Dog. The opening song pulled me right in, and I was entranced by Jimmy's riffs. This was my first Zep album, due to it's fame/notoriety. The solo on Stairway is classic, and Jimmy can really rip. I didn't think guitar would ever sound cooler. It still doesn't.
    2. Sleep - Holy Mountain --- As I got older, into my early 20's, I kind of chilled out. I was less into hardcore punk, death metal, and less into shredding. In a way I was coming full circle back to my roots with crunchy riffs and fuzz boxes. Sabbath, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Mountain, Nazareth... I was getting more into groovy, crunchy riffs than finger tapping, pinch harmonics, or tremolo picking. I then remembered there was bands in the 90s who got into this groove, Sleep and Kyuss foremost among them. The opening riff on this album, with Dragonaut, draws you right back into the-- pardon the pun-- sleepiness and mind warping existentialism of a good groove. Weed not necessary, though it helps. If I can sound one-fifth as good as Matt Pike ever did, I'll be well off.
    1. Black Sabbath - Master of Reality --- Again, my early influence was hard rock. Black Sabbath was my favorite, and despite everyone else seeming to prefer Paranoid, I found my rock soul in tracks like Sweet Leaf and Children of the Grave. Iommi pioneered doom metal on this album, after pioneering metal in the first place back on the first album. The groove, the crunchy tone and foreboding drawl to his tone... this is where I started, and this is where I came back to, full stop.

Listening to you mention the albums, reminded me of just how old I've become! LOL!! I'm sitting here thinking of my top 10 most influential guitar albums, and it all starts with Beatlemania,I was 11 years old when that started, then I move on to Fresh Cream in 67,and Jimi Hendrix about the same time.Shortly after that comes Leslie West, and then Ritchie Blackmore, and then Michael Schenker, and I admired Eddy for what he was playing, but it was never my style, look at the people who were teaching me up to that point, there was no way that I could ever play the stuff Van Halen did. Everything that I heard after that point, was all the same stuff I had heard 20 years earlier, just played in a different way.

Great video, thanks for sharing your influences. I'm from the UK and a couple of years older than you, but most of your choices chime with me. Great to hear 'Young Lust' again from 'The Wall' it's hardly ever played these days; I have to say that as I get older, my admiration for Dave Gilmour continues to grow. I agree with Eddie at no. 1, but for me Ritchie Blackmore would be in there somewhere. I remember picking up a Deep Purple compilation '24-carat Purple' when I was 15, and Ritchie's playing brought rock and classical together for me before Randy Rhoads, whom I also admire. I'm pretty certain that Michael Schenker with UFO on 'Obsession' would edge out Ace Frehley. :)

Yes, there is a pattern here. More classic power chord type rock. I love other bands but these who I draw my influences from.

Completely surprised by your number 1, and it is of course the right choice. In hindsight it influenced my life as well. Unfortunately my playing still sucked. Keep making "your story" videos. Bravo

2112 would have to be in my top 10 as well as Hell Bent For Leather. But that list is strong. Enjoy your videos very much. We are about the same age and you are bringing back fond memories of my youth. Thanks.

Cool video. It's interesting to me the way you situate Hendrix in the heavy metal tradition. Personally I would tend to think of Hendrix in terms of the blues tradition. But reflecting on this was good for me. Now that I've gotten so into Stevie Ray Vaughn, it's honestly hard for me to take Van Halen seriously. And, I don't like that, I would like to take it seriously as music again. Guess I'll just have to listen to it some more. Oh darn.

I probably couldn't make a top 10 right now but Appetite For Destruction would be there, Back In Black, Are You Experienced?, Van Halen 1, Holy Diver, Metallica's Black album, Billzard Of Oz and really the whole Blues genre, especially Gary Moore and BB King but i'd really have to sit down and think about it

Slash seems like a good guy, but I never got all the hype over G&R when they first came out, and i REALLY don't get the current re-popular super hype over them today. You can tell in current interviews with slash, he don't get it either lol

I went to see Black Sabbath at Sheffield City Hall UK in May 1978. The support was Van Halen and we were late leaving the pub and walked in half way through VH's set. I realised then that we'd missed something special as they were miles better than Sabbath. Ozzy couldn't hit a note on key for most of their set. Great vid and playing as usual Steve.

I'm so glad you included "We Sold Our Soul For Rock and Roll" that really got me going on the guitar, that album taught me the pentatonic scale from which there is no return! \m/ The Wall made a big dent too. EVH came later for me and that the FIRST time went back to the drawing board!

I wore out my KISS albums! And Dio with Vivian Campbell (Holy Diver, Last in Line), Dio with Sabbath (Heaven and Hell, obviously). Not that I don't love Ozzy Sabbath. Iron Maiden (Piece of Mind), and Rush (Moving Pictures and older), Ozzy with Randy (Diary and Blizzard) Judas Priest (Sad Wings of Destiny). Although I owned many AC/DC albums, absolutely agree on the Bon Scott thing. Dirty Deeds being my favorite album. Oh, the guitar on Ride On! I was probably most influenced by Alex Lifeson and Randy, and Tony. Oh, not to exclude James Marshall Hendrix, I wore out the JHE Are You Experienced album too.
If you ever find yourself in Oklahoma, I am certain we can jam on the same page.
    GREAT VIDEO!!!!!
