A Name on a Guitar doesn't make it a Great Guitar, and Having an Off Name doesn't make a Junk or Inferior Guitar.
Today we are fortunate and its even more affordable to take a lot of new low cost Guitars with a little time polish and tweak few upgrades you got what would of been a $1000.00 Guitar...
By the same token CNC on Famous Brands has fell the opposite way they cut cost, they cut materials, use cheaper materials and in some cases now the Less known Brands are better then a lot off shelf Famous Name Guitars.
Also Steve from Boston has really been informative with a lot of his Videos for several years. Appreciate both Max, Steve, and the others who take time to put time in sharing and informing us on Products, and we get to have a treat to a lot of good Playing as well which is always Cool...
Thanks Max!!! and thank you Steve...

bpreece1 your absolutely correct, when shopping for a guitar, the name brand has nothing to do with my decision, I have played high end Les Pauls that I didn’t like, and on the other end I’ve played no name low cost guitars that sounded and played great, I advise all guitar players that I know that are in the market for a new guitar, to give all guitars from high end to low end a chance. I don’t have any brand loyalty when it comes to a guitar that to me will become such a personal relationship and experience. I have several guitars and even though some are more expensive than others, everyone of them to me all have equal value.

I recently read a comment from a guy in China who makes guitars in a factory. He said that the actual Chinese guitar manufactures make very good high end stuff for not a lot of money, compared to the big names that pay very little wage and give the workers inferior woods and material to work with. So crap comes out from them.

Steve is a guy after my own heart that presented the facts, even if he was very positive towards our country, he didn't bad mouth Gibson or any other U.S. manufacturer for spending more money pleasing wealthy stockholders than on their products while Asia had their eyes on the ball for decades.

Steve brings up some very excellent points. I had a 1975 Gibson Les Paul Standard that I purchased in 1979. While the guitar sounded good it was exceptionally heavy to play. I sold it 2 years ago because it was just getting too heavy to play anymore. I recently purchased a Harley Benton SC450 from Thomann and was totally astounded by the quality of the instrument. It actually plays better than my Gibson did and weighs much less. The new guitars from Harley Benton are really putting pressure on US companies to step up their game and stay competitive.

Great conversation MAX and Steve, THANKS! Steve makes some extremely spot on points about Today versus 70's and 80's. I'm 54 and have been playing guitar since age 10 and Bass since age 12. My first guitar was this GOD awful 1960's Japanese made for Sears electric Stratocaster style that Santa had brought 2 of my older cousins for Christmas. My Dad bought one of them for me because I wanted a guitar so bad. I was already playing the Trumpet which was new, and was taking lessons. Learning to read music and music theory. This was extremely helpful. My family listened to music constantly. My oldest brother played Sax and other brother played Bass. My brother that played Bass was left handed but learned to play right handed because a left handed Bass was out of his price range! He's in his 60's and still play's right handed! My first "REAL" guitar, that was actually great, was a Lawsuit 1971 Ibanez Les Paul. I still have it and play it sometimes. I got the Ibanez with a Hardhell case and a 1967 Fender Deluxe for 250.00 from my brothers Asst Manager who was getting a divorce when I was like 11. He brought it to my parents house for me to demo. The best deal I have ever got! Thay are both collector items now! I will leave them to my daughter. My first new amp was an early 80's American made Peavey Classic 50 watt 212 combo. This thing will still rock as loud as you want! My first Bass is an American made Peavey T-40 , Black with a Maple neck a fret board, with a flight case included! I used to stand and walk on this case at Band practice, take it out and it's in perfect tune, just to blow people's minds! The Peavey Amp and Bass were very expensive! Back in the early and later 80's any equipment or Pedal's and gear were crazy expensive! I have acquired Gibson's, Fender's, Charvel's, Jacksons, the real one's, Ibanez and others. Then I was buying Mesa's, Marshall's, Ampeg's, Randall's,G-K's,original Vox's, etc, before it all became what I call affordable with all the new Import low cost equipment from Asia. Like Steve say's, it is really a new world for beggining players who can get some great playing and sounding gear for such an affordable price! It's really astounding!

My two favorite Guitar youtubers... hope you two do more of these together.. awesome. Great points made. My very first guitar was a "try me" guitar my parents got me it was made in Korea back in the 80's.. I could put my pinky under the strings. the action was so awful. never stayed in tune. But my parents made me learn on my dads acoustic before buying me one, just to make sure I really was interested. So, i had strong fingers and calluses and a friend helped lower the action and it was a little better. But my next guitar was a BC Rich (this was back in late 80's). And it took me forever to relearn that I don't have to push so hard on the strings or pick so hard to get sound. today, my stepsons first guitar was a Indo Ibanez RG. Way better guitar to learn on, and he stayed interested, and now he plays in a band and he's quite good. I love that beginner/mod. guitars are so affordable cause it will keep kids interested. Also my 9 year old grand daughter asked me for a guitar for Xmas this year. Harley Benton is what I'm getting her. I love my Harleys. I'll just get her a junior model. Oh and the price and inflation mentioned. Ibanez Rg back in 90' cost anywhere from 700-900. Which today would be 1700-1900. But yet the Rg 550's today are only a grand.

@@vincentmorelli1013They probably don't have a living wage and benefits. Guitars made overseas with the cheapest parts, materials and, labor can sound just as good, play and feel just as nice. Yeah...LMAO...I bought a 7 string bass straight from a Chinese maker. Had to refinish the frets. Straighten the neck. Replace the electronics and bridge. Refinish the paint. Basically the only thing good was the wood itself...hopefully. I still saved money but had to spend several 100 on replacement parts and several hours of working on it to make it playable. If you don't know how to work on your instrument you'll have to spend the money for someone to do it. Then you lose any savings you had.

My first guitar was an Encore cherry sunburst Gibson Les Paul Custom copy my mom bought me for Christmas in 1980. It was made of plywood, the frets were definitely coat hanger wire, and the pickup weren't even humbuckers, they were just a simple coil with some wire wrapped around it... a total piece of firewood... but it looked like Ace's Les Paul Custom, and that's all that mattered. And Mom bought it for me... so to me, it was even more valuable than a real Gibson.

Steve makes some great points. To get a cheaper guitar you had to go towards either building it yourself or buying a kit. Now you'd be crazy to buy a $150 kit, when you can get a fully working guitar for not much more coin.

I love what he said about embracing foreign companies because it makes our companies better/produce better instruments for cheaper. It's totally true. I think people are beginning to realize you dont need to spend a ton of money to get a quality instrument nowdays.

It really doesn't matter if a CNC mill or lathe cuts out the shape or profle. That is a standard in conventional machining and fabrication to profile a part or component. It creates accuracy and makes a job faster and more efficient than cutting everything out with a bandsaw. It is the care that is taken afterward in sanding, surface prep and making sure the components and scale length are laid out and placed properly. Its the equivalent of drilling a hole on center with a hand drill without a center drill vs a fixed axis machine with a center drill. Its called "holding a tolerance." That is what creates and maintains quality throughout large scale production runs. Hand built makes sense in designing and fabricating 1 instrument or a limited run. You can design and place the tightest tolerances on any part print or feature. Whether your laborers care to hold it is a different story. This is where your quality control department comes into play before the end user receives the product.

Why "import guitars" are only "the USA vs. Asia"? There were other "overseas" manufacturers, as you call them, making good, solid, durable guitars, some of them also very inexpensive: Höfner (Germany, est. 1887), Eko (Italy, est. 1959), Hagstrom (Sweden, est. 1958), Lag (France, est.1980), just to mention some of the more known brands. Weren't those imported to the US?

Hey Max, great interview! I started playing a little after Steve, but, I was fortunate to get some great import gear at great prices as early as the late 1970's. I bought an Alvarez, (not Yari) in the late 1970's. I think I paid about $225.00 for it. I put Grover tuners on it for about another $100.00. I think I got a hard shell case included in the price. That was one great acoustic guitar. As far as I remember it sounded as good as a Martin D 28. I know it played and sounded amazing. In the 1990's my wife purchased a Samick SK-5, which I still have and it sounds and plays really awesome. That was about $225.00 with a hard shell case. Samick has put out some great gear over the years at great prices. I believe they used to be the biggest guitar maker in the world for a while. So great deals have been around from Asia for a long time. Sure there were some duds, but, that is always the case. I owned a few duds, but, they did not cost very much. Today, I'm getting great deals on a variety of gear and having a great time playing all of them. Go Asia!

As you have seen me post on some of your previous vids Max, Gibson is charging way to much for their guitars, Some really good videos out there from very skilled craftsman that show you how to buy a Chibson (chinese Gibson) and work the body of the guitar from the fretts to the body and replace all electronics and hardware with Gibson parts and there you have it. Basically a very nice guitar with the Gibson logo at a fraction of the cost. If Fender and Gibson continue to still sell their hardware and parts then overseas guitars will continue to be bought.

From Leo: Very good interview, Steve's points are dead on. I still have my Taiwan Harmony electric. It was awful in the 1960's and is still awful today. That was just all I could afford at the time. It is hard to find a bad $300 guitar today. ALL of my import G&L guitars have been excellent. Even the Squier Affinity Telecaster I got last fall was very good right out of the box. In adjusted dollars we paid 10 times as much for really bad guitars as you can get a very good one for today. You never saw a youth with 5 or 6 guitars back then. We have a whole generation that has never even seen a truly bad guitar. We are in a completely different age. Unfortunately Gibson cannot (or will not) compete in the production guitar market and are not willing to go simply boutique.

Well, no, the solid state and modeling amps are not better than tube amps. Why do you think modeling amps are modeling tube amps, and there is no solid state amp that can cover the bases that a tube amp does anywhere near as well. I do agree that technology advances have made solid state and modeling amps serious contenders. They edge out classics in terms of diversity and offering an all in one more portable rig...but tone for tone, they are not as good as tube amps....yet

@@BlueberryStinkFinger62 your anecdotal evidence doesn't really matter. I work in the industry, was a touring musician for 10 years and a studio artist for another 6. Now I am a full time luthier and amp repair tech. If you step back and think about what you're saying, you'll understand how you are just not correct. Solid state technology is way better than it was even 10 years ago in terms of tone, but the modeling amps are modeling TUBE amps, not the other way around. I wonder, is there a setting on a kemper or axe fx for a crate gx1200? Or a vox vx, how bout a marshall valvestate? No. Because no one wants that tone. SS can give you some incredible cleans, and some even work well with pedals, but they are not on par with tube amps tonally yet. The reason people buy these new SS digital components is diversity. Not a single person is sitting next to a 65 deluxe reverb and saying...ya know, my kemper sounds much better. They are saying, why would I drag out 6 amps to a show, or to record when I have a damn good approximation right here in my modeling amp. A direct comparison of pure amp tone is, at least for now, going to lean to the tube amps. If SS amps want to be viewed as better, they need to develop a solid state amp that doesn't copy a tube amp of some kind and can stand on it's own against then. There are none out there that do that.

  • @robj144

I agree entirely for electrics that CNC is perhaps a bonus for consistency. I disagree partly with acoustics however. All the sound from an acoustic is determined by how it's made and the quality and density (sound properties) of the wood. Even from the same tree, two different pieces of wood will not be entirely the same. If all are made to the exact same dimensions, they will sound different. Hence, acoustics benefit greatly when made by hand. A luthier can tune the tops and modify the thickness of the tops individually based on the characteristics of that particular piece of wood.

I love my Checlipson. I wouldn't sell it for 4 times what I payed for it. I did have to replace all the hardware, put on a graphite nut and drop in a 81/85 set but it plays a lot better than my Epi Paul Jr. It was also kinda cool to be able to communicate with the luthier while he was making it without paying thousands to a custom shop to get that interaction and there was a little language barrier. I would not try to pretend its legit or sell it as such but I don't feel bad since its a copy of a copy, I don't feel it cost Gibson a penny if anything they came out ahead since I do have legit Gibson stuff, some with the same cheap Chinese stuff that is on a lot of the knock-offs. Mostly with all the hype around Chibsons the last few years I had to see what it was all about. Much better than I expected. I figured I would do a review and give it to a student or something but its better than a LP Studio at 20% of the cost, so I ask who is really getting screwed?
