WOW!!!!!!!! That is insane! Unbelievable! All of the other CAT 3 vids I have seen they usually break out about 100 or so and have a bit more forward vis than this. So cool!
Pure insanity! I have very little IMC time under my belt and this is enough to want to keep you VFR, lol. I've watched other Cat III approaches on youtube and this is the most intense one I've seen by far. Got to put a lot of faith into your AP to shoot an approach like that.
In any type of autoland, yes, you do put all faith in the instrumentation and the autopilot for good reason. Granted, category three landings can be a bit unnerving when first performing them, but after a few times it becomes natural to pilot. It's really no different flying in fog than it is a clear day in retrospect, only disorientation may occur if you stare out the window into fog while your senses may tell you different. The key is to block the feelings, and focus on the instrumentation.
@jimh615 In a CATIII ILS approach, the autopilots land the aircaft. The system that does this is called "autoland." There are two components, "Land 2" and "Land 3" and the component used depends on how many autopilots are active. Ideally, all 3 will be operational and "Land 3" will be used. If one autopilot fails, then the system will use "Land 2" as a backup. In conclusion, the pilot is confirming that "Land 3" is still operational, and like I thought NOT confirming runway 3. (thxs mikey)
I just wonder how sophisticated today's jetliners are! It's amazing that you managed to land in such condition using the autopilot but how can you get to the gate with such visibility? Can you taxi without watching ahead?
That was quick! Thanks a lot! The METAR if you're interested: LSZH 200820Z VRB01KT 0100 R14/0175N R16/0200N R28/0225N R34/0175N FG VV000 01/01 Q1012 NOSIG. As others have pointed out, it does look like less than that on the video.
a cat III autoland is when theres not too much visibility the autopilot will be disconected when the aircraft touch the 3rd white lines on the runway idk how to say the name in english tho
The limits at my dad's airline (i'm 13 years old) for crosswind on autolands are 15 knots.by the way, very nice video and you have to reaaly trust on the instruments an forget you have eyes.truly amazing!!!!
Holy crap that's awesome. I knew they had planes and airports capable of zero visibility landings, I just didn't know they were aloud to do it except for emergencies! Sweet video
I don't remember thrust setting affecting the deployment of spoilers...I'll have a read of the 737 manual to see if I can find an answer...but of the top of my head I don't think so...
Lol from the video it looks like you even busted the ILS CAT IIIB minimums :P Prety good. Wish my 206 could do that lol :P I'll be with you guys in 2 years ;)
I don't like car driving in such conditions, let alone FLYING ! I've been throug CATIII landing in Munich this year. Ground I saw maybe 3-5 secs before touched down, it wasn't as bad as in the movie, but still very impressive. All flights were at least 1 hour delayed though.
Maybe in the newer versions, I don't know...But I completed the 737-200 ground school about 3 weeks ago and there was nothing in the manuals that said such thing...what the manuals said and what we were taught in class was what I mentioned before... and like I said, one of the few limitations that the aircraft has is no spoilers below 1000 ft AGL. I would imagine that if the flight spoilers are deployed before touchdown the landing would be, at least, a very firm one.
@allantotti Ok, but I don't agree with that. By the way, why the computer or the copilot calls "minimums"? If there were an accident in that case, I'm sure it would be for human error.
@mrganchos 100% safe dude. CAT III B ILS approach allows it to be safely done with almost nil visibility. Pilots don't like to risk their lives unnecessarily... And they didn't in that case.
No way man! The 737 for example, if armed, flight spoilers are deployed on wheel spin and the ground spoilers when the ground sensor on the main gear feels the aircraft is in the ground... Also below 1000ft AGL the spoilers CAN'T be used! therefore bringing the throttles back to idle wouldn't deploy the spoilers! I hope this helps!
No Visibility refers to horizontal not vertical visibility. The 175m mentioned is the horizontal visibility. When ceilings are very low you will be given a VV # (Vertical visibility) It is not uncommon to have visibility of 175m and a VV of 0.
@LongimanusVert The other one was posted by me. It was sent to me in an email and was labeled as Brussells. I know the guy who sent it to me, and he was not working as a commercial pilot, so I know he did not take the video himself. It was passed via email through several people. I have changed the info on it to reflect correctly. Happy Landings!
I think the weather looks worse than it is because of the old camera. It’s still a good Cat3 landing, but please remember the old technology used to film this.
True, Lovely video man! I have one question though, is the autopilot also allowed (or able) to execute the landing in a 30 kts crosswind (or lets say the planes maximum allowed) ? Does it use the rudder to correct? How doest that work ?
its a CAT III ILS... its a complete automatic landing.. at the end its just the captain's decision to land or to go around.. but the plane can fully land on its own (on a CAT III only)
DarkStorm: I think they mean 175 m HORIZONTAL visibility. Vertical visibility is indeed much less - at 30 feet (~10 metres) you still can't see the runway!!
In CATIIIb we trust.
in God we trust!
Insanely awesome! So far, the best Cat III approach and landing caught on video!
This could be the thickest "pea soup" Cat 3 approach that I've viewed on UA-cam so far. Thanks.
LOL! I figure "50" was called at the piano keys and I still saw squat! No lights or anything.
I love this video. Thanks, Ian. :)
Watched this 3 years ago and it still scares me.
I came to see three real cute little cats :)
Finally a real CAT IIIb vid. Just amazing to see!
WOW!!!!!!!! That is insane! Unbelievable! All of the other CAT 3 vids I have seen they usually break out about 100 or so and have a bit more forward vis than this. So cool!
still amazes me every time I watch this
That is some trust on your instruments..Amazing...!
Pure insanity!

Sweet....now this is a Cat III landing. Great footage:)
ok wait! the landing was perfect, but you gonna taxi to the gate?
they will follow stevie wonder to the gate
Crazy vid! Have to trust the machine here, not always the easiest thing to do. Thanks for posting!
holy crap.... yeah deff change the title on this one. this is by far the best cat III ive seen on youtube, pure defintion of it.

i agree with you dryelf327.... its an absolutely insane landing!!! and you really had a lot of faith in the AP!!!

true but i like flying in and out of clouds and above overcasts then decending through the overcast till you see the approach lights
a cat III autoland is when theres not too much visibility the autopilot will be disconected when the aircraft touch the 3rd white lines on the runway idk how to say the name in english tho

Good work of crew and autopilot! I wont this autopilot on my helicopter!))
as a vfr pilot i cant even begin to imagine how disorientating this must be.thats what i call trusting your instuments.
IT´S THE MOST AMAZING CAT3C LANDING VIDEO ON UA-cam,AND MAYBE THE ONLY REAL CAT3C
the pilots become passengers during these approaches
Holy crap that's awesome. I knew they had planes and airports capable of zero visibility landings, I just didn't know they were aloud to do it except for emergencies! Sweet video
now that your on the ground....taxiing must be a nightmare with this kind of visibility
I don't remember thrust setting affecting the deployment of spoilers...I'll have a read of the 737 manual to see if I can find an answer...but of the top of my head I don't think so...
fantastic...
Wow I didnt know it keeps te crab even @ touchdown!
Thanks for the info m8 :)) Happy landings!
Lol from the video it looks like you even busted the ILS CAT IIIB minimums :P
Prety good. Wish my 206 could do that lol :P
I'll be with you guys in 2 years ;)
OMFG! Best CAT III Landing I've ever seen
That´s amazing!!!I love aviation!
Would've liked to see the entire roll-out and low-vis taxi to the gate (now that's another noteworthy accomplishment). Anyway, it's still awesome!
Very impressed..
Weather looked like not even possible to drive a car, outstanding pilots
This is the same video used for a foggy landing at LaGuardia. What's going on here?
I can not get over this landing!

The best CATIII approach I've ever seen.
I totally agree

@BigBearVids Thank you so much for clearing that up!!
awesome!
yes there is, except for planes that are equipped with the HUD you mentioned
@mrganchos 100% safe dude. CAT III B ILS approach allows it to be safely done with almost nil visibility. Pilots don't like to risk their lives unnecessarily... And they didn't in that case.
makes sense, thanks for the reply.
whoa does the runway have RVR because it was completely no visibility
Not necessarily. Southwest is a Cat III airline, but they use a HUD for Cat III and not Autoland.
the best technology ever..... wow
I just got my IFR last week....Holy Fuck! This landing is Amazeballz!
Welldone Jetsetter767
Who needs ILS with fog that thick, they could get out and shovel their way down to the runway! My GAWD that was thick!
Very cool! Technology at it's best.

Beautiful !
Just amazing, 5 star video.
Holy mama jesus! Amazing!
jetsetter... you still doing these crazy landings?
Cat IIIc is nuts. I can only think of a few US carriers who have some planes capable of doing it.
would you kindly do so? i have no doubt it's not a sim, i just would love to look up the METAR from that point in time. cheers.
Excellent video Jetsetter767.
which airline was this flight?? And what kind of aircraft???... it's awsome landing!!!!
Thats how we do it! Systems + whatever we can see = nice landing!
Well done.
But if your system fails, you need to find another airport :S
"Vertical Visibility 000" haha, nice
No
Visibility refers to horizontal not vertical visibility. The 175m mentioned is the horizontal visibility. When ceilings are very low you will be given a VV # (Vertical visibility) It is not uncommon to have visibility of 175m and a VV of 0.
scary landing !!! i cant focus on instroments when out side vis is bad .........you always feel like YOU'RE LOW !!!
someone has balls of steel thats past the minimums waaaayy past i didnt see the runway till touchdown
So good landing! Good job guys!!! awesome!!!
@LongimanusVert

Happy Landings!
Just flying with EB now. He told me to check it out. Even though this is a job it is still cool isn't it. Cheers
I thought the spoilers deployed with idle, not reverse thrust.
GUAUUUUU!!!!
Nice video, thanks for share with us
this was certainly one of the best low visibility videos i'v seen..a CAT III B..
How did he even manage to steer to the gateway?
Now that's something. Working on my instrument rating right now, and i thought my regular ILS minimums were low.
pff... this is some Cat3... nice!
I think the weather looks worse than it is because of the old camera. It’s still a good Cat3 landing, but please remember the old technology used to film this.
hi, could you expand on why you're not allowed to look out the window until after touchdown?
@Jetsetter767 no comment... you are brave
beautiful
True, Lovely video man!
I have one question though, is the autopilot also allowed (or able) to execute the landing in a 30 kts crosswind (or lets say the planes maximum allowed) ? Does it use the rudder to correct? How doest that work ?
thats the sickest ils landing i have ever seen. do you think thats autoland?
Awesome...that was one foggy day/night :-)
@cabdolla at night in the Zlin right?!
During the approach you hear "Line Three". What does that mean?
as an instrument rated pilot this is insane
Aren't you supposed to go around if you can't see the runway at 200ft AGL?
its a CAT III ILS... its a complete automatic landing.. at the end its just the captain's decision to land or to go around.. but the plane can fully land on its own (on a CAT III only)
DarkStorm: I think they mean 175 m HORIZONTAL visibility. Vertical visibility is indeed much less - at 30 feet (~10 metres) you still can't see the runway!!
Doing it! ...... Doing it! .......... and Doing it! Well.
That´s wahta i call a CATIII landing. awesome.
This is awesome !!!!!!!!
just amazing!
Wow, great pilots
Have you ever had to go/around with a CAT IIIc autolanding?
This is crazy!!!Wow!!!
they might send a car to guide them or even some airports have nice lighting to guide them to the gate
Because this is for sure a CAT IIIB landing
holy shit!!!! that was amazing
do you guys use aouto land in a situation like that or are you doing it manually ?
