Watershed is the ninth studio album by Swedish progressive metal band Opeth. Released by Roadrunner Records, Watershed is the first studio album by Opeth to feature guitarist Fredrik Åkesson and drummer Martin Axenrot, who replaced longtime guitarist Peter Lindgren and drummer Martin Lopez. The artwork for the album was made by Travis Smith (who has created the artwork for eight previous Opeth releases) in collaboration with Mikael Åkerfeldt. It is the band's last studio album to contain death growls or any death metal elements to date.
On opening track "Coil", Mikael Åkerfeldt duets with Nathalie Lorichs, who was dating drummer Martin Axenrot at the time. The band has revealed that they were initially going to start the album with what eventually became the second track, "Heir Apparent"; however, they preferred "Coil" as an introductory track for its contrast to "Heir Apparent".
Åkerfeldt was inspired to write the single "Burden" while listening to the Scorpions song "Living And Dying" during a stay in Turkey.
Opeth are a Swedish progressive metal band from Stockholm, formed in 1990. In addition to progressive metal, the band incorporates folk, blues, classical, and jazz elements into its usually lengthy compositions, as well as strong influences from death metal, especially in their early works. Songs may include acoustic guitar passages, Mellotrons, death growls, and strong dynamic shifts. The band rarely made live appearances supporting their first four albums, but since their first world tour in support of the 2001 album Blackwater Park, they have had several other major world tours. The group have been through several personnel changes since early in their history, including the replacement of every original member. Lead vocalist, guitarist and primary songwriter Mikael Åkerfeldt has been Opeth's driving force since the departure of founder and lead vocalist David Isberg in 1992.
Opeth have released 13 studio albums, four live DVDs, four live albums, and two boxsets. The band released its debut album Orchid in 1995. With their eighth studio album, Ghost Reveries, the band achieved chart success in several dozen countries, including Top Ten in Sweden. Their ninth studio album, Watershed, topped the Finnish albums chart in its first week of release, and reached 23 on the US Billboard 200 chart. As of November 2009, the band have sold over 1.5 million copies of their albums and DVDs worldwide, including 300,000 collective SoundScans of their albums Blackwater Park, Damnation, and Deliverance in the United States.

Reverie/Harlequin Forest would be great for a review.
The most beautiful song definitely is the drapery falls. Such a perfect blend of melody and heaviness in my opinion. I think you'll need maybe a few listens to fully grasp it, but that's pretty common with progressive music

It's so hard to pick because they put so much love and effort into every song. Personally I'd say my top Songs by them are:

Faith in Others
Deliverance
... and pretty much any other song from the "Morningrise" Album onwards x)

Harlequin Forest is a pretty good introduction to the death metal side of things, however Ghost of Perdition is more iconic I feel like, it has more of that jazzy texture mixed with death metal that the whole Ghost Reveries album captures so well. Still I'd reccomend The Lotus Eater from Watershed, it has a harsh vocals, but it's more proggy overall and so might be a good start to that sound of Opeth.
Oh I can't wait for Ghost of Perdition. You will be treated to everything in their arsenal. Masterpiece gets thrown around a lot, but this song truly is.

Edit: After watching the video I wanted to add that Michael does both the clean vocals and the death growls so you are only hearing half of his vocal potential in this song. Also I would recommend listening to Reverie/Harlequin Forest next as it includes the clean vocals you know from this track and introduces their heavier sound with some growling as well. That being said any of their work from the Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park albums are worth checking out.

Opeth are true masters of progressive music!Burden is a pretty nice song,but you really have to check songs like Harlequin Forest , Blackwater Park or Ghost of Perdition to really see what they are capable of!!!!
This is definitely a more "accessible" song by them, and it begins the transition of the band away from harsh vocals. I'd recommend Blackwater Park as a good idea of what their range and capabilities are.

This was my first exposure to Opeth, and I liked it. I am not usually a fan of the "overly progressive" metal (can't really vibe with Dream Theatre) but do like the more accessible stuff from Symphony X, and this gave me similar vibes to that. So I'd ad to your list of recommendations: Symphony X - Paradise Lost. Cheers!
So happy to see Opeth being reviewed!!! They are so good. Wait until you hear Mikael's death metal voice. He can switch between clean and growls with the best of them. I would like to suggest Reverie/Harlequin Forest - it's got it all -

About the outro, if i'm not wrong, they didn't knew how to finish the song, so mikael started playing the acoustic part and the other guitarist kept detuning de strings as Mikael was playing

This song is like a human.
Starts with ease and sweetly, it has ups and downs, it has beauty in it, it has sadness in it, at the end it deformes like a body in a distorted way and finally accepts death with a smile.
Eternal Rains will come from their album Pale Communion is a fantastic song. Highly recomended😀

My absolute favorite band of all time yes... Would love if you could check out "the drapery falls". There you have Mikaels death growling, which is one of the best in the game. I get that you probably are scared of growling, but it adds so much more emotion to the song. If you wanna stay on the more accessible side I would recommend "Face of Melinda", that probably is my favorite song of all time and on my favorite album of all time.
On the album that outro leads directly into the next song "Porcelain Heart" and that provides additional context to the weirdness at the end of Burden. (you should probably react to Porcelain Heart with that in mind.)
The song "Harlequin Forest" by Opeth would be a fitting stepping stone in to growl vocals.
If you want to try some of their "deep cut" gems... Godhead's Lament, Hessian Peel, Masters Apprentices, Madrigal/The Amen Corner. These songs all showcase the band's versatility very well. Clean/growling vocals, nasty riffs and acoustics, lots of transitions.
Harlequin Forest, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Ghost of Perdition are all popular and amazing, but they've also been done a lot.
Agreed. But I have listened to Opeth on and off for years. Try Ghosts of Predition. Great mix of beautiful clean singing and cookie monster growls. Same vocalist swapping seamlessly between. Technically very interesting musically, too, with a hauntingly beatiful soft melodic section being interspersed with the harder, metal parts.
Definitely would love you to analyse one of, if not the, top prog metal bands, Dream Theatre. If you choose to, put a pole up, just don't include their only hit single, Pull me Under. Great song, and still compositionally interesting, just without the virtuosic prog brilliance they are renowned for.

These two songs go together and perfectly display the softest and hardest aspects of the band.

I still love the ending of this song. Any guitar player probably knew right away what that sound was, just never contemplated using it that way. Or, I've never heard it used like that before.
I love imagining how it came about. Them trying to figure out how to end the song. Should we fade out? Hard stop? Once they came up with the idea, I like to imagine the guitar player and the person turning the tuning pegs as the notes are playing, giggling in joy for finding their own perfect ending.

Opeth is my favourite band, they introduced me to death growls and progressive metal in general but after all these years I find it very hard to find anything that I love as much as them. Here's a couple suggestions for more Opeth:

Next you should do Reverie/Harlequin Forest, and Ghost of Perdition. And Hessian Peel should follow up those, easily. Then you would be getting a wide array of their different music styles in a pretty good balance. You will not regret it!
As an idea you should maybe also watch the Lamenations live DVD by them. All of their live stuff is great but Lamenations has a unique vibe since they play one of their most distinct albums in it's entirety.

Wow when I suggested this song I never thought you would do it, it really shows you dont just care about views. I think next definitely either has to be Bleak, Ghost of Perdition, or Harleuqin Forest, Burden is still one of the best Opeth songs death metal or not :)

Nice reaction and interesting analysis. No need to go immediately all-in into the heaviest Opeth, you will have time for that further on. While recommended here Heir Apparent is amazing song it's a bit overkill at the start. For now you should enjoy their more mellow side - do "Moon Above, Sun Below", it's proggy piece that highlights Opeth's compositional side and choice of instrumental delivery. Then you can do something like "Bleak" which is more straightforward and generic structure wise and production-wise sounds i'd say radio-friendly, but it introduces growls. And after that you can transition to something like "Hessian Peel" and after that you are good to go on your own - you are ready to be amazed by Opeth's diverse catalogue.

Bleak is so interesting because I swear I've had that thought about it being "radio friendly" as well, and at the same time it's 9 minutes long with multiple distinct sections and harsh vocals. Something about its structure seems TOO well crafted to be called "straightforward". I mean, the way everything flows together makes sense, but there's also a genius to the transitions that make it feel too good for radio.

This might be my favourite Opeth album (at least is in the Top 3, with Blackwater Park and Pale Communion).

Damnation is also one of their albums with only clean vocals, it's worth checking out.
Opeth is very versitile band, they create music from almost every subgenre of metal and some other non metal genres. I love this song but I wouldn't be sure if it's right to classify it as metal. some may argue that it's just progressive metal but to me progressive metal is metal with elements of other genres, this is more like something else with elements of metal. I'm not sure how I'd classify this song but I don't think metal is correct word here
Great reaction and analysis! Many will recommend you pursue some of their earlier stuff (which categorically is sublime) but if you want to stay in the "Watershed Era" - please do the combination of songs opening the album - Coil / Heir Apparent and do them back to back - trust me on this 🙂
Bleak has a good mix of clean and death vocals.
You do have to try the growly metal side of Opeth (not that their metal songs don't include the kinds of things you're enjoying about this one). The live version of "Ghost of Perdition" from Red Rock is probably the live pick. If you want a studio song, I'd recommend the period when they were working with Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree, which would probably be any one of "Blackwater Park", "The Drapery Falls", or "Deliverance".
That organ solo gets me every time. It's super tasteful and expressive. It absolutely matches the sort of bluesy expressive solos that Mikael himself tend to play on guitar. The way the organ solo gives way to a first solo played behind the vocals is also a great touch.
Watershed marks a special moment in Opeth's discography. Their early works were much more aggressive, and over time they've mellowed and moved more towards almost prog rock in some of their latest stuff. This album sits more or less right in the middle, with both extremely heavy moments but also moments like this.
Hessian Peel.
If you want to experience, in my opinion, the very LAST of Opeth's well known mixture of growls, drastic acoustic transitions, flawless melodic transitions and moments of emotional turmoil, that's the track you want.
I prefer their heavier stuff but WOW this is a great track. Try harlequin forest or lotus eater.

Burden is a grest introduction since it perfectly displays their uniqueness in moods, atmospheres and harmonies. That said, I don't understand why you throughout refere to it as (progressive) "metal". What makes this song "metal"? And it's even not that progressive - at least not when it comes to combinations of/wast shifts in styles, rythmic/melodic intricacy or including many various sections. Still a gorgeous song ❤displaying the magic of the band 😊 I'll be happy to follow your journey with them and other great bands. Really enjoyed the format!

Opeth is such an amazing band. Many people will recommend Ghost of Perdition, which is a great song, but it's not a good introductory song. It is difficult to recommend where to start since it is all so good. My introduction to Opeth was the Damnation album, which is amazing, but nothing like any other Opeth album. Some of the more accessible songs that give a better idea of what I would call the more typical Opeth sound would be: Face of Melinda, The Drapery Falls, and Reverie/Harlequin Forest. From the more recent albums which have a different sound I would suggest Cusp of Eternity, Sorceress, and Heart in Hand.

The "expert" got it right with the detuning. Frederick detuned Mikael's guitar as he was playing and as far as I know it was unplanned.
Congratulations by exploring Opeth. Suggestion: Hessian Peel. By accident the song after Burden... Hessian Peel has got the most beautiful build up (with a nice surprise halfway the song)...

So I am not the biggest fan of Death Metal but to get into the more raw/extreme side of Metal (at least that's how I got into, after about 10-11 months after I got into Metal) I would recommend bands like Slayer, Kreator, Sodom, Sepeltura, Possesed, Venom, Celtic Frost, Bathory and most definetly the Band with the first real Death Metal album, Death (and yeah I am aware of "Seven Churches", but that's more of a mixture of Death and Thrash Metal but "Scream Bloody Gore", was the first full on Death Metal album (in my opinion)) and like I said I am not that big of a Death Metal fan (just getting into it) but I love Death, they are very unique and very technical/progressive especially on everything after "Spiritual Healing" and the singer/guitarist Chuck Schuldiner (may he rest in peace) had a vocal style, which coined all of Death Metal (also he had a bit of a more guttural voice in the beginning and later on, a more banshee-like voice). So Yeah that's the bands I would recommend to get into the more extreme Metal genres such as Death or Black Metal. Have a lovely day!

I highly suggest you to react to Dream Theater’s “Pull me under” which theirs most “commercial”, still a classic with a interesting and fitting ending, then Metropolis of the same album, it is a very technical song but sometimes accused of being virtuosity for the sake of virtuosity (I disagree) then listen to “wait for sleep “, a piano and vocal only song that happens to be just f beautiful, then review “Learning to live” which have it all.
All from the same album, DT was revolutionary, 25 years after Images and Words is still a land mark album, although Opeth is cool, it is to DT as you physics professor is to Newton.

GUYS! PLEASE ease him into Opeth's metal sound! Don't just throw him into the deep end, so he says something like "very impressive BUT I liked the softer stuff more"... I'm tired of hearing that from reaction youtubers.
How did you reach the conclusion the song is in D minor?
A minor sounds like the root in the intro. Then it goes to the good old 1-4-6 and turns 6, which is G into minor.
Then it goes C to D where D is clearly the dominant of G minor. Then there is another modulation from D to D minor.
The song has parts of it which are in D minor but i don't see how you can come up with a blanket statement that it is in D minor.
Opeth Aren't night wish - they are good live but their studio albums are insane production and are the right way to review
I personally am not a fan of Opeth. No offence to anybody - it's just that whatever of their music I have heard has never resonated with me enough to properly check out the band. I am sure that they are great and so maybe one day I will do that. No strong opinion on the song in the video and the analysis. Sounds pretty good and probably deserves the high grade.
This being said. I would like to recommend a band that for some reason is somewhat unknown and is sedom talked about, but man did they make some great music! The band is called Orphaned Land, they are from Israel playing Oriental/Progressive Metal. I know from the previous videos of yours that you do prefer studio versions first, but trust me - this live is worth it. It is one of the best concerts that I have ever seen (and this is why I have went out of my way to upload it to UA-cam in good quality and add subtitles). I do not expect a lot of people to agree with me on this suggestion because the band is not as popular as Opeth, Dream Theater, Death etc, but I urge everybody who is not familiar to at least give this live a try.

I saw Opeth at the Rock The Coast Festival in Spain in 2019. I was kind of new to the band, and really wanted to like them...BUT, what a disappointment. For the main support band slot that they held, I expected they were going to have at least a stage presence, but, let's put it this way, they were a great aid to insomniacs. Most disappointing.

This is progressive rock not metal. Check out Heir Apparent (from the same album) to hear their sound. It has much better written lyrics than this song which as you said is a bit generic. Not sure whether you'll like the death growls though. Progressive bands do tend to use less common instruments. Sometimes even full orchestras.
