Next up for Opeth......Deliverance. ua-cam.com/video/c1Lkc3OqtDU/v-deo.html Being a fan since 2002....they are a must see live. I'm so glad you're going to make it your mission to see them in concert!
One of the few songs that has stayed with me for over like fourteen years or something. I never remember lyrics but I know this whole song and it gut punches me every time.
Mikael Åkerfeldt is one of those rare musicians who only come around once in a while. His songwriting is phenomenal, every song takes you on a journey. His voice is incredible, whether growling, or singing clean. He's also pretty damn funny too. And the band itself has always had some of the absolute best musicians playing alongside him.
To touch upon his humour: I saw Opeth in Toronto in 2009, and during a song break, he says, "Apparently Bryan Adams also comes from Toronto," and how we are all supposed to secretly love Bryan Adams. And then he plays the riff to Summer of 69 with the dumbest grin on his face as the whole crowd sang the first verse. One of the most priceless live concert moments I have ever experienced.
@@seventhsonmedia I saw Opeth play a festival in Sweden and Danko Jones played a few sets before Opeth. Danko ragged on people wearing white tube-socks and sandals. Guess who stepped out on stage a little later wearing white tube-socks and sandals? F*cking Mikael Åferfeldt, and saying, "I heard Danko talking shit about sandals, but they're so comfy!"
And he is also working with Ghost on their albums as their lead guitarist with Tobias playing so many parts himself he realised he needed one of the best and on their Iron maiden cover Mikael shined.
Oof I don't know... Harlequin Forest is probably their magnum opus of that golden era of mixture of "beauty and the beast" in my mind. In any case, Opeth tricked me into growling too. Fisrt exposure to them was Windowpane and A Fair Judgement, which led me to listen to Damnation... Which was love at first listen. Sure enough, Ghost Reveries came not much later and made me not only appreciate growling in time, but became what I consider their best album (even though my favourite is still Damnation), and to this day they've become one of my three dearest bands (along with Pink Floyd and Snarky Puppy xD). Saw them live two weeks ago too, fucking great show. Aaaaaand of course opened with Ghost of Perdition.
@@GaudyGabriev it’s hard to go wrong with Opeth! Yeah they turned me on to growls and probably death metal in general too. Always been a fan of screaming in music, but I always thought the guttural growls were silly sounding. His are just so powerful that it’s undeniable! Does he still scream live, or is he just not screaming on studio albums anymore?
@@dclarkmusic Oh he's never stopped growling live. He's just kinda tired of the style, and also doens't sound quite as amazing as he sounded back in the golden era, but still sounds great. And his clean singing is better than ever even.
Might be the best reaction and breakdown I've seen on this channel, so far. And like Ghost, they're also swedish. ;) God I love my country when it comes to music. Mikael Åkerfeldt FTW. :D
I'm kinda jealous you get to discover this band completeley new. They have a huge diverse catalog of absolute bangers ranging from heavier songs like this one to more mellow and also prog rock like sound.
Listen to Windowpane. It's honestly one of their greatest songs. There isn't the metal aspect of it and it it's pretty soft spoken as far as the lyrics go, but it also profoundly one one of the best songs they've ever done. It's fucking classic. Honestly one of the best tracks ever. Like if you like this, you'll like Windowpane.
Oh MAN I am so glad to see a reaction from a musician that really GETS how simultaneously simple and BONKERS what they are pulling off, and can actually feel the intuition of the transitions in real time. A lot of reaction channels have trouble feeling the moments where something flows into heaviness and look all thrown off. Hey Mikey! He likes it!
Opeth has been a constant musical companion for 30 years - they are just fantastic. Musicianship, lyricism and musical arrangement is among the very best.
Mikael is one of the best Metal composers, and that's it. He's just SO classy and elegant not even when it comes to the clean stuff but the heavy stuff too. There's so much care and pure raw talent in every melody and shift the songs go through. It's impossible to replicate, like a magic only he's able to create. I love him to death and I'm so happy every time I see people discovering Opeth and being able to get what they're about. Hope you dig deep in their discography.
I am a drummer, but dude, your speaking my language. I love watching musicians reacting to Opeth for the first time, and then time again as they venture through the discography, the eyes flick open, the jaw drops, saliva drools, ha ha. Just like me a couple of years ago! Thanks for this!
I feel ya man, but I definitely have a hard time listening to the later drummer(s?) try to groove like Martin Lopez. Opeth is at their best with him on the kit, IMO. Way underrated in the drum world
True enough, but one takes what one can get. Axenrots work in Pale Communion is pretty good, he has his own style, but you are right, he doesnt have the Lopez swing.
Idk. Axe was a beast in his own style. Voice of Treason stills blows my mind every time I hear it. That being said, I'm curious to see what Valteri brings to the table when they decide to release a new album.
💯. Shogun from Trivium was my top album...then, Still Life found its way into my ears...OMG. No competition except other Opeth albums...what an album, what a band!!!
I was actually there at Red Rocks Amphitheater during this exact show. You are literally at almost 7,000ft in the air at that venue and it's a little hard to breathe.. We saw Slipknot/Lamb Of God/BFMV/MIW at Red Rocks in 2015. Absolutely amazing venue. Without a doubt my favorite venue I've been to. Everything about it is just awesome. The Ohio State Reformatory (aka Shawshank Prison) hosts Inkcarceration every year and it's another incredibly neat venue. Love Jacob's Pavillion at Nautica as well (even though Cleveland itself sucks). Right on the edge of the Cuyahoga River with downtown lit up in the background and 700 foot freighters squeeze through the narrow river way.
Great video man! I stumbled onto this band in the most unique & bizarre way. A friends band was out on tour & they came through where I was located. I've loved Opeth since around 2004. I dove headfirst into their catalog thereafter and they're top 3 for me. Im so happy you're digging them so much. Let's do this, one pick per album: (skipping Orchid) Morningrise: Nectar, My Arms Your Hearse: Demon of the Fall, Still Life: Serenity Painted Death, Blackwater Park: Blackwater Park, Deliverance: Deliverance, Damnation: Windowpane, Ghost Reveries: Reverie/Harlequin Forest, Watershed: The Lotus Eater. I'm sorry but that's kind of where they dropped off for me lol. Their sound totally changed for the next 4 albums.
@@ayekaye8055 don't forget Pale Communion! That album's nasty. They took a nosedive after Pale Communion, and haven't resurfaced. That's okay, though. I'm fine if they never make another quality album again, even though I know they will.
After years of watching your reactions….THIS ONE is by far my favorite you have ever done. Yes, I’m an Opeth fan. But your reaction to this performance was epic.
I don't care what genre you like, anyone can see the incredible talent of these musicians. This band is amazing! I was an instant fan of the band after I heard this live gig the first time. Great reaction brother!
Opeth is my favorite band hands down. Their songs aren't the most difficult to play on guitar, but their compositions are out of this world. No one can do it like they do.
Damn, someone who gets into an Opeth song this much this quickly has good taste. They have so many amazing songs. I just wish they had a lot of high quality live videos! There aren't a ton, relative to how much badass music there is.
Not a metalhead as I rarely listen to this style, but I enjoy watching bands like this perform for the energy and technicality. Once in a while I go down a rabbit trail on Instagram watching clips from different metal genres. Behemoth is one that I've found that way.
When I discovered Opeth in around 2006, my reaction was the same! They quickly became my favorite band and I can’t go more then 3 days without hearing one of their songs. Your reaction was so emotionally pure, yet you still had to nerd out technically.
Haha, it was priceless to watch M Palmisano react too Opeth. I am glad for him. You don't want to miss out on this band !!! About 15 years agoI heard Steve Wilson mentioning Opeth as one of these ambitious prog_metal musicians from Sweden, so I bought "Ghost Rêveries", I became an instant fan. I never been disappointed by any of their albums.
It's really a pleasant surprise to see a video dedicated to Opeth's Ghost of Perdition. It really encapsulates what one of my favorite bands of all time is all about.
Akerfeldt's guitarplay has the melodious touch of the great Jan Akkerman in his prime when he was part of the legendary prog rock band Focus. During the seventies Akkerman was considered by his peers to be one of the finest lead guitarists in the world. I bet Akerfeldt knows and loves the craftmanship and specialty of Akkerman and Focus. A brilliant player.
Opeth climbed fast the ladder of my most favorite bands, Pink Floyd are still on the very top. The more you listen to Opeth, the more you'll love them, This is a band that doesn't have a bad song.
The perfect balance between brutality and beauty in opeth. It makes the end hooks so triumphant on many songs. My favorite songs of theirs because of the endings are: God heads lament, when, burden. It was so awesome to hear you be soo stoked about them I got lumps in my throat
You ought to check out Ne Obliviscaris - And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope (Live in Colorado 2016). Six of the most incredible musicians you'll ever lay eyes on. Clean singing, harsh vocals, a violin, insane drummer, bassist, two amazing guitar players. Magic made into sound.
Heja Sweden! One of my favorite bands since forever. So unpredictable and interesting songs - kickass metal but very very melodic. The Drapery Falls is one of my favs.
Dude, I fell in love with them a few years ago, around the same time I found Mastodon...both instantly are in my top 10 favourite bands of all time. Insanely good band.
I must be getting old, but I teared up watching your reaction to this song. Opeth played a huge part in my formative years, and seeing you so caught up in the power of Michael Åkerfeldt and his mates really got to me. Nevermore is another powerful progressive metal band I can recommend. Give Dead Heart in a Dead World or This Godless Endeavour a spin. Both formidable albums.
im from seattle so i got to see nevermore play a TON... dead heart in a dead world is in my top 5 of all time just because of how much it touched me as a teenager. that and blackwater park. also saw opeth play a bunch in the early 2000s! we both old its okay :)🍻
Michael to see you so stoked is so great. Cuz when I first heard Opeth I thought wow these guys ,especially Michael Okerfeld singer and guitar were the best I've heard. I just have my ears too, you have thr ears and the guitar.
I am not a musician, but Opeth for me is what real musicianship looks and sounds like. Everybody in this Band is one with their instrument and they all together are one as a band. Saw them live last month in Berlin…it was just great.
Loved this reaction. Nothing better than watching someone get excited on a first Opeth listen. Definitely a band worth getting into! I recommend doing Harlequin Forest from the same album, or Blackwater Park or Deliverance next! All great songs live! May you enjoy your Opeth journey!
This was one of my favourite videos of yours, Michael! As an avid Opeth lover, I was eagerly anticipating your reaction as each section of the song came up 😀 It was like watching myself when I first discovered them many years ago. Enjoy tumbling down the Opeth rabbit hole!
After an entire adolescence spent listening to the album "watershed" and "ghost reveries" I attended their amazing show in Milan last september: it was outstanding. I can barely put into words the level of musicianship displayed and the crystalline beauty of those arrangments performed live. Opeth is probably one of the cornerstones of prog metal.
I’ve been a fan of Opeth since 2000 or so. Mikael is THE guy who got me into harsh vocals because his cleans are so good. There’s some good stuff from this same show on UA-cam, or, some from Royal Albert Hall show if I recall. And yes, they’re spectacular live. I saw them in 2004 in Orlando FL and they’re were amazing. Back then they only had 6 albums under their belt. Probably my favorite live show ever. I need to see them again!
You are very enjoyable to watch, brother! Thank you for this Opeth reaction/analysis. I recommend everything from their discography :D Pure perfection, you won't regret, I promise!
Went to my first Red Rocks show in October. Insane venue. Also, Opeth is an insane band, and they’ve been around since 1990, so happy hunting into their discography. My friends and I were obsessed in high school, which is when Ghost Reveries, the album this is on, came out. If you’re looking forcanother guitarist that’ll impress you with his ability composing, Mike Stringer of Spiritbox is incredible. He can shred with the best, having been in tech metal bands in the past, but he plays to what suits the song. Watch their live in studio recording of their 3 parter “The Mara Effect,” and you’ll see what I mean about his ability to play what is needed. He also wrote and recorded all the instrumentation for their releases.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it so much! Can't wait to see more Opeth on your channel :) Some great songs: Harlequin Forest, Drapery Falls, Hessian Peel, Burden.
Man the first time I ever heard Hessian Peel I was exhausted coming home on the bus. The whole song lulled me to sleep until THAT bit. I woke up so hard I headbutted the window.
This song and this band converted me into loving growling/harsh vocals and kind of opened my mind to modern metal. This song was a gateway back to a genre I loved when I was a kid. Music that I had kind of brushed off became some of my favorite of all time. I remember the first time I heard this I immediately had to play it again, and listened to it probably 10 times that first day before even checking out any of their other songs. The entire band is incredible.
Watching Deliverance live gives me goosebumps every time. Never been disappointed at an Opeth gig (other than it being over). The sound mixing is always incredible too. Been to too many gigs where you can’t hear a thing because you’re just swamped with noise.
Thanks for the pick Michael!! I knew that you would love Opeth. I have seen them live a half dozen times and they are unreal. The whole Ghosts Reveries album is amazing. It's crafted like an orchestral movement the way the songs flow. I'm a bit surprised that you haven't heard of them before as they have been around since 1990. Regardless, now you know, and knowing is half the battle. They are on tour now supporting their latest album, but no US shows on their calendar at the moment. You should watch some of Mikael Åkerfeldt's UA-cam videos, he is one smart dude with a rye sense of humor.
Kudos for getting this to him. What a great live capture this vid is. :) Do you reckon there's any chance of stretching things & getting him to grab a baritone for the drop-A riffing on Jinjer's "Vortex" now?! #YouDontAskYouDontGet LOL
No, they aren't on tour for latest album, their latest album came in 2019, this tour is about their 30th anniversity. I was there on one of concerts and they played one song from each of their albums. It was amazing.
First Opeth song i ever heard was Deliverance, from the album of the same name. That was about 20 years ago now, was sold after 1 song and a life long fan now.
He's actually dragging a bit for this entire performance. But he absolutely slayed this track on Roundhouse. Must have had an off night. Roundhouse: ua-cam.com/video/u30hd9gs-xE/v-deo.html Mix isnt as good, but the performance is more energetic.
I can't say enough good things about Opeth and this reaction. Their catalog has been a big inspiration for me and the entire band across albums/line-ups has been tremendous. Thank you for this reaction. I am so glad you finally got a chance to listen to them.
So many great songs. For more straight prog, try Sorceress live from the same show. For more complex top picks, Harlequin Forest and Deliverance are great for analyzing
I was at this show at Red Rocks. Devin Townsend Project, Gojira, and Opeth. Amazing prog metal lineup, and they were all fantastic. Opeth and Gojira both recorded their performances.
THIS WAS TREMENDOUS. OPETH IS NO JOKE.
The rabbit hole runs deep.
There is an isolated guitar track on the 'tube. Worth checking out. Almost perfect tone.

I'm sorry but that's kind of where they dropped off for me lol. Their sound totally changed for the next 4 albums.
@Nick Clinkenbeard hear u but Heritage is an absolute banger.
I don't know why this was left under your reply Christoffer. 😕
Абсолютно согласен!
Totally concur!
The best!!
"I just wanna see where they're goin', man..."
....to infinity, and beyond
I don't care what genre you like, anyone can see the incredible talent of these musicians. This band is amazing! I was an instant fan of the band after I heard this live gig the first time. Great reaction brother!
After being an opeth fan for maybe over 20 years. I am finally seeing them live this year. I cant wait. They are one and only mighty opeth.
I'm a freak that digs for Opeth reactions because it's my favorite band. Happy that someone recommended it to you, love your passion towards music!
They’re my fav too…I think I first heard them in 2000 or so?
me too lol
Welcome to the Opeth rabbit hole. Strap in for a tremendous ride. Can’t wait to see what comes from this new discovery ❤
This was so enjoyable! Your enthusiasm is addictive and great! Welcome to the Opeth club 🖖
There are multiple dvd's though (or modern equivalent)
What? Over the years they've released four high quality, pro shot live concert DVD's. Get up to speed😆
Eh... I mean, they're just that!
Not a metalhead as I rarely listen to this style, but I enjoy watching bands like this perform for the energy and technicality. Once in a while I go down a rabbit trail on Instagram watching clips from different metal genres. Behemoth is one that I've found that way.
Haha this brought a smile to my face. This band, and in particular this song, is a juggernaut
I’d love to be able to hear this for the first time again 😭❤️
Love the passionate reactions and absolutely love Opeth! Keep it up, Michael.
When I discovered Opeth in around 2006, my reaction was the same!
They quickly became my favorite band and I can’t go more then 3 days without hearing one of their songs.
Your reaction was so emotionally pure, yet you still had to nerd out technically.
This song always surges through my body and gives me chills. Can't get enough!!
Haha, it was priceless to watch M Palmisano react too Opeth. I am glad for him. You don't want to miss out on this band !!!
About 15 years agoI heard Steve Wilson mentioning Opeth as one of these ambitious prog_metal musicians from Sweden,
so I bought "Ghost Rêveries", I became an instant fan. I never been disappointed by any of their albums.
When this album came out it blew my mind. Super sick, it felt like everything came together on this album and I was down for the concept.
Love your passion! These songs really grow on you!
I can't remember the last time MP got this excited in a react video. Opeth is awesome!
Opeth climbed fast the ladder of my most favorite bands,
Pink Floyd are still on the very top.
The more you listen to Opeth, the more you'll love them,
This is a band that doesn't have a bad song.
Just saw them live last week. Insane show. Flawless!
Loved and lived the reaaction. This is exactly how I feel everytime I listed to these Opeth songs. So go damn impressive in so many ways.
Heja Sweden! One of my favorite bands since forever. So unpredictable and interesting songs - kickass metal but very very melodic. The Drapery Falls is one of my favs.
One of the most talented prog metal bands ever to play, these guys are incredible. You have been Opeth-pilled. enjoy... :)
Dude, I fell in love with them a few years ago, around the same time I found Mastodon...both instantly are in my top 10 favourite bands of all time. Insanely good band.
I was front row at this show. What a legendary performance! The wind stared blowing throught the canyon the second they started this song.
Heart collector was my shit
im from seattle so i got to see nevermore play a TON... dead heart in a dead world is in my top 5 of all time just because of how much it touched me as a teenager. that and blackwater park. also saw opeth play a bunch in the early 2000s! we both old its okay :)🍻
also forgot to add - nevermore is badass because jeff loomis is one of the best metal guitarists of all time 1000%
@@ChrisPBacon710 No doubt. Jeff Loomis is the best. Conquering Dystopia is another fantastic project of his
@@pederbartholdy8897 agreed. love me some nevermore. jeff loomis doesn't get enough credit for how hard he shreds.
Michael to see you so stoked is so great. Cuz when I first heard Opeth I thought wow these guys ,especially Michael Okerfeld singer and guitar were the best I've heard. I just have my ears too, you have thr ears and the guitar.
Thank you so much for giving Opeth attention. Truly a classic in this genre.
No Bad Days with OPETH. Cheers from Tijuana MEXICO.
I am not a musician, but Opeth for me is what real musicianship looks and sounds like. Everybody in this Band is one with their instrument and they all together are one as a band. Saw them live last month in Berlin…it was just great.
One word... Deliverance! One of their most amazing songs and one of the best outros in music history!
Loved this reaction. Nothing better than watching someone get excited on a first Opeth listen. Definitely a band worth getting into! I recommend doing Harlequin Forest from the same album, or Blackwater Park or Deliverance next! All great songs live! May you enjoy your Opeth journey!
They will absolutely become your new favorite band. Such a diverse and beautiful and large catalog of music for you to explore! Thanks for the video!
This was one of my favourite videos of yours, Michael! As an avid Opeth lover, I was eagerly anticipating your reaction as each section of the song came up 😀 It was like watching myself when I first discovered them many years ago. Enjoy tumbling down the Opeth rabbit hole!
This has got be the best Michael reaction I’ve ever seen! Lmfao he’s so excited
I was thinking the same.
I love watching people see Opeth for the first time. I felt the same way my first time
As far as live songs look for The Drapery Falls, Bleak and Harlequin Forest
First song I’d ever heard from Opeth. Hooked forever.
Welcome in the Opeth journey! It's my favorite band by far!!
Scandinavian darkness produces such great music!
Your energy here is phenomenal. All food for the soul
I watch this video couple monts ago, and now Opeth are my best favorite band with Tool. Thank You Michael! :D
You are very enjoyable to watch, brother! Thank you for this Opeth reaction/analysis.
I recommend everything from their discography :D Pure perfection, you won't regret, I promise!
My best live reaction i seen... had soooo much fun! Thanks Michael.
It is true, everything you said about Opeth. Absurdly great band!
Your reaction is just priceless. Made my day. Thank you.
That's it dude! Opeth is no joke, the very metal core itself manifests through their creations!
Watching Deliverance live gives me goosebumps every time. Never been disappointed at an Opeth gig (other than it being over). The sound mixing is always incredible too. Been to too many gigs where you can’t hear a thing because you’re just swamped with noise.
This has been my favorite band since I was 14. Welcome to the fan club
Do you reckon there's any chance of stretching things & getting him to grab a baritone for the drop-A riffing on Jinjer's "Vortex" now?! #YouDontAskYouDontGet LOL
Ghost Reveries.
Harlequin Forrest.... Must listen. Pure masterpiece from Opeth!
They put at least 10 songs-worth of guitar parts in there. Amazing
One of the single best drum performances ever recorded
Definitely. Martin Axenrot is a fucking beast.
He's actually dragging a bit for this entire performance. But he absolutely slayed this track on Roundhouse. Must have had an off night.
Roundhouse: ua-cam.com/video/u30hd9gs-xE/v-deo.html
Mix isnt as good, but the performance is more energetic.
Ghost and Opeth are my two favorite bands. Both bands put on the greatest live shows I've ever seen. Sweden really knows how to rock.
I was at this show at Red Rocks. Devin Townsend Project, Gojira, and Opeth. Amazing prog metal lineup, and they were all fantastic. Opeth and Gojira both recorded their performances.
I hate you 🤓🤓🤓 Devin, Opeth, Gojira... what could go wrong?
I am jealous, dude. And I hate you for being there ☺️☺️☺️
I hope you got the chance to see them live since this video. It is a life-changing experience.
This band is phenomenal. They've got 13 albums for you to dive into lol and every song is like this. All giant epic progressive fireworks shows.
Nothing better than watching someone discover Opeth for the first time live on camera.
