The tech in this car is really cool, I believe their biggest mistake is to call it a 63. If it was called 43 or 53 E-performance people would have a much easier time accepting the car. It is so strange…. the manufacturers must read the comments, but it doesn’t seem to matter. Giant screens? Piano black crap? Touch screens? Fake engine noise? Queer styling? Numb steering? Giant emblems? Who would actually buy a new car these days? An idiot would.
We've been down this road before back in the 80s. Making small engines with one or more turbos and overcomplicated electronics makes for some nightmare repair jobs down the road. I will be LOOKING for people that own one of these because I have MULTIPLE bridges to sell to them and I need cash now.
I mean the head of AMG said "customers buy our cars for the tech, not for the engines" after they released the new C63. This summs it up perfectly....they have no idea (or at least he has no idea) what the customers actually want. Even here in europe those dont sell at all, especially if compared to the RS5 and M3/4.
This interior philosophy of slapping a tablet in front of you and saying “yeah that your gauge cluster” is absolutely detestable All the best to everyone
@ well…have you looked inside a Porsche? Or an Alfa? They know how to properly integrate the screens into the dashboard. They don’t just put a tablet in front of you. And also, what’s with the attitude? What difference does it make how long they’re doing it? It’s still just a freakin tablet, it’s lazy

@@chriskarsseboom2200 I’m not just saying “it’s a tablet stuck on the dash”. It’s not an opinion, it’s a fact. It IS a tablet stuck on a dash. It’s a factual statement. And I don’t like it. I’m not criticizing anyone that likes it or understands it. I’m just saying I don’t. I think it’s cheap and clearly a cost cutting measure. And couldn’t help but notice how you completely dodge the other part of my statement. About brands that DO integrate it into the dashboard. And you can say “it’s exactly the same thing but inside a pretty frame”. And you would be absolutely correct. But that’s also why we frame paintings and pictures. The frame makes a difference.
Emissions regulations too. Europe is being staunchly demanding and that's the home turf of Mercedes. So of course they are gonna make their cars in consideration to that.
Mercedes seemed to completely forget about what made their car so special and well liked. About the weight, it's also heavier than the Ferrari Purosangue SUV, which is drastically bigger and has a much bigger engine and it does not have a hybrid system. And that trunk/boot capacity is smaller than most of the small hatchbacks, even smaller than a 5 door Mini Cooper's boot, which are several size classes below! This may be good at what it's built for, but it seems to do it in a soulless and neutered way.
Wow who’s buying this when the m3 and m4 exists? Don’t think anyone’s buying an 63 amg for tech and lighting stuff… I think they can literally remove all those comfort and tech features and at least put an v6 in it and it’s definitely going to sell better
The main issue is they used the c63 moniker. C63 invokes a certain type of expectation. If they had of called it anything else it would be considered a fantastic car.
Yea I struggle with Doug's take here. The interior looks like it was inspired by a Miami nightclub in 2009. The screens are chunky and tacked on, and while the software may be logical and responsive, it also looks like the operating system from a 2015 Android tablet.
Why are manufacturers building all these cars that no one wants? Seriously who is the target buyer for a 700 hp 4 cylinder? This and the new Charger EV are going to absolutely tank.

Mercedes tries squeezing in HP into these little engines and have problems time and time again. I have a car rental company and own 7 Mercedes 3 of which are "baby AMGs". All 3 of those cars are 4 cylinders. All 3 needed a cylinder head replacement verified by a Mercedes tech who claims this happens all the time. V8's are way more reliable.
I still hate these luxury brands that have decided to just mount rectangular screens for the gauges and center screen... I prefer the screens on my dads $20K Chevy Traxx, that has what looks like a wrap-around cluster that looks perfectly integrated in with the dash board. Instead of looking like someone glued a couple of iPads to the dash.
I have a GLC 63 and the sound cannot be described, it has to be experienced. The rumble at idle shakes my entire home. I’ll never sell it for this new one.
It can definitely be described. It’s a muffled turbo v8, found in almost all similar performance cars/suvs around $100k. The rumble and idle is minimal and quiet compared to previous n/a v8s from Mercedes.

I hate to admit, but I totally agree with you.. I love Doug, but I disagree with the interior design and quality assessment, especially when other car journalists/youtubers trash the interior quality of newer Mercedes models. I think nowadays even emerging brands like Mazda/Genesis have better interiors than Mercedes.
Absolutely...the tachometer iPad is simply horrid. ESPECIALLY SO when you compare it to the older AMG vehicles 2006 and below... idk if anyone recalls they had beautiful sapphire tachs that mimicked the glass of a watch; kinda had a blue/green reflection in light... truly a downgrade.
As someone who has driven the current gen C-Class, EQS580, and the pre-facelift G63 AMG, I agree with your assessment of the quality of their interiors. While I do like the look of their interiors and the ambiance at night with the ambient lighting, the quality (apart from the G wagon) is not befitting of the price tags that Mercedes is charging. It feels cheap as if you're in a Toyota or Hyundai; that's not good.
IT’S not a 63 if it does have a 6.3L V8. Change the power plant change the nomenclature. The numeric designation and vehicles are indicative of the power plant whether it is the displacement or configuration. Divert from that and you’ve diverted from the naming identifiers altogether.
From an engine & sound perspective, absolutely. The 205 in coupe form & pre OPF, from a chassis perspective, was great to drive with 80 percent of the 204 sound. 204 had a flawed chassis. I had both cars, and thank god I gave up on AMG before the current pile of poo was released 😀
If you look closely, you can see dust collects on them as well. I like the design overall, but if you want to keep the interior looking good you're going to have to be disciplined with keeping it clean.
making the sunroof capacitive touch, then having the surrounding area be gloss black knowing you'll try to find the slider by feel which leaves fingerprints everywhere. Truly terrible design
I own a 2023 C43, and the glare isn't too bad, but you're right on with the fingerprints. The main screen gets covered in them after a month or so. I have a microfiber cloth in my center console for that purpose. Other than that, though, it stays fairly clean.
MB engineers were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should… But bravo for the return of amber turn signals! They’ve been disappearing from European cars for a while, even though the same cars use ambers in Europe. It’s amazing that the most American of vehicles, like the Escalade and Ram pickups, use amber lights. Yet Porsches and BMWs and MBs are red (until now).
yeah, that is weird. Amber indicators were always a staple of European cars in the past, but most American cars were red...then both had them for awhile, and now they have swapped. Amber signals are more visible, better for hazards, and less confusing if a red brake light goes out. government mandates never got too picky about them, so it has been up to manufacturers to decide. I remember some old first gen Ford Taurus's having amber signals, yet some had red, depending on the trim package/options. I prefer Amber...or what Doug calls "orange"...they look cooler, and are better for safety.
Car thieves will appreciate the ostentatious projection headlight show to help them identify which car to steal. For an extra $750 you can get the “AMG Parking Notification System” which uses an external speaker to say “Warning: AMG C63 has just parked. Stay away from the vehicle until the owner has exited. “
I was going to get one of these.... going in with similar hopes you yourself. I ended up going with a 2021 C43 instead... and I am so incredibly happy I did. I was thinking i'd be longing for the C63s V8... but man driving my C43 feels exactly as you described. It's like driving a slightly less "gritty" M2, and it has an incredible exhaust note. The C63's spirit is in its power train. I feel like AMG Fanatics would take their classic AMG powertrains and exhaust notes even if the interiors were awful. Hopefully this generation delivers a huge lesson to Mercedes Benz and gets them to reconsider their direction for the future.
Wait I'm confused. The badge clearly says C63S, but Doug makes no mention of the S. Is there a non-S C63? If so, what are the differences? Or are all C63s now "S's?" Surprised Doug didn't address this.
There used to be separate S variants of the AMG cars, it seems in all Mercedes' infinite wisdom, they've done away with it, just like the V8 in the C63 _S_ 😅 The V8 AMG cars still exist, like the SUV's and the AMG GT, and S63.... we're waiting to see what happens with the E-Class....if they butcher that, they'll be done for... the C63 and E63 are their top sold performance cars...but damn that S63E is a bad "beech".... this hybrid stuff, but with their glorious 4L bi-turbo V8, and the option of tons of colors and leathers... including the OG pale yellow leather is back, and this gorgeous blue leather that would look sharp AF on a Cirrus Silver or Moonlight White Metallic car 👌🏼 (I just don't have $200k + lol)
@moyopedro2557 I'm aware. Hence why I said C20 or C21. Depends on which one of their 2 naming schemes they wanted to follow. If they followed suit with the likes of the E550, CL550, or S550, then it would be the C20 or C200. If they followed the name scheme of the 63 line, it would be the C21, or C210. We've seen them go down this route before. Prime examples are the C230, C250. Both 4cyl powered Mercedes, and nobody had an issue with those existing. So why not announce that the C63 is discontinued and the C200 AMG or C210 AMG is taking its place? The C63 has always been a 6.2L. Makes no sense to tarnish the name with a 2.0L 4cyl.
I'm glad Doug gave this car a fair shot, unlike some car reviewers who immediately turned up their noses because of the drivetrain. Also, I'll admit to some bias because I owned a current generation C300 for about a year. I loved the interior of the car, which was the nicest (and most expensive) car I've had. There is a lot to like in the C-Class, but the drivetrain in the C63 is not one of them.
My father in law has an old 5.5 amg, love the sound of that thing. I would constantly floor it from 20 to 30-40 on the straights, or 0 to 30 at the traffic lights. Sound >> speed and handling.
YOU DON'T KNOW HOW UNBELIEVABLE IS THIS AND HOW HAPPY I AM!! I hate red indicators! it's not even noticeable! and it's unbelievable to me that new car has an orange indicator!
I could be wrong but I believe that they switched to a hybrid 4 cylinder because the Turbo V8 just by itself would not pass the new Euro emissions regulations coming down the pike. Yes, the other AMG 63 cars have a V8, but they are also hybrids for the same reason: Euro emissions. For the people saying “Why couldn’t they put in the V8 hybrid from the new S63,” it probably wouldn’t fit. So we got this instead.
@@TheFugitivesSeries Maybe you're an American but bmw's g80 m3 has more emissions (248g/km) than a w205 c63 (192g/km)... so switching to a 6 cylinder wouldn't help would it.
This car is just an example of taking hybrids and small displacement engines too far. It might drive amazingly, but just doesn’t embody the spirit of AMG for most. Also Hagerty has done drag races between the C63 AMG, M3, and Model 3 performance and the BMW usually won, with the C63 finishing last. So even with all that power, weight, turbo lag, and complex engine likely hinder it.
Sadly that's the problem with most car companies today. It's all about the performance numbers and how fast a car can go. It's no longer about the driving experience and actually feeling the intensity from the roar of an engine as you drive faster.
@ I mean if you want to downsize go for it, but sometimes it can go a little too far. They downsized 10 years ago swapping that 6.2L for a 4.0L V8 but that V8 was done so amazingly that it felt bigger than the prior engine, still sounded amazing and had a visceral feeling to it, and just you didn’t miss anything. In this case, they went from a V8 to not a V6, but a V4. I could’ve forgiven them for going down to a V6 since they’d probably do a turbo V6 really well, but a 4-cylinder with all these extra components and weight, just feels weird even if it handles well.
@user-jq1kq9hy1t AMGs is based on its racing heritage of V12s and V8s. The European emissions and noise regulations to the so-called 'save the planet' by moving to electrification and hybrids are killing the true and pure AMGs. Such vehicles you mentioned are for the affordable sales market offered with the 'hamburger with the lot' package for customers in order to boost sales. The tech in this car is really cool, I believe their biggest mistake is to call it a 63. If it was called 43 or 53 E-performance people would have a much easier time accepting the car. A full fat 63 is synonymous with V8, no matter if its a C, E, S or G-Class. People don't care how fast and high tech the car is, they just want a Merc with a big V8. I for one will be keeping my W205 C63s a few more years until AMG get their acts together and put a V8 back in their C-Class.
Why would they call it a C53 or C43? That doesn't make sense. It would only make sense if it was a C20 or C21.
That's part of the problem.I think that's what MB wanted to do, get the C63 buyers onto these things on purpose. They must have thought the customers for these things were senile and wouldn't care or be able to tell... but I'm sure the sales numbers will tell the true story.

With all those surfaces I would imagine fingerprints and glare would be major issues.
When you have to carry a fresh microfiber and a cleaner spray everywhere....

MB engineers were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should…
But bravo for the return of amber turn signals!
There is only one C63 which is technically the "S E Performance" model. There is a non-"S" C43, but the C63 only comes in one variant.
There used to be separate S variants of the AMG cars, it seems in all Mercedes' infinite wisdom, they've done away with it, just like the V8 in the C63 _S_ 😅
The V8 AMG cars still exist, like the SUV's and the AMG GT, and S63.... we're waiting to see what happens with the E-Class....if they butcher that, they'll be done for... the C63 and E63 are their top sold performance cars...but damn that S63E is a bad "beech".... this hybrid stuff, but with their glorious 4L bi-turbo V8, and the option of tons of colors and leathers... including the OG pale yellow leather is back, and this gorgeous blue leather that would look sharp AF on a Cirrus Silver or Moonlight White Metallic car 👌🏼 (I just don't have $200k + lol)

Mercedes call Jaguar and ask how to properly market your new vehicles
They might not want to do that now...
have you not been on the internet in the last week?
AMG Copy Nothing and Create Exuberant from now on like the automotive teletubbies.
Maybe type in " new jaguar advert" then come back and edit your post.😂

My father in law has an old 5.5 amg, love the sound of that thing. I would constantly floor it from 20 to 30-40 on the straights, or 0 to 30 at the traffic lights.
Sound >> speed and handling.
THANK YOU for the greatest explanation about this powertrain of them all! You're amazing Doug.
That doesn't explain why they couldn't do a turbo 6. The issue is they skipped over that and went too drastically low in cylinders
Doug the type of guy who gets Kennan to wear his wife's clothes on a road trip.
Doug’s the kind of guy to discover the dated beard fad which has been promising to finally die ten years ago.
I really thought Doug was going to say it's as good as the V8. Appreciate his honesty
Wonderful review Doug😊
You don't feel like you're in a muscle car. There is amplified sound filtering through the front speakers. If it ain't a V8, it's not an AMG.
Alright, so what about the A45S and CLA45S?
@user-jq1kq9hy1t AMGs is based on its racing heritage of V12s and V8s. The European emissions and noise regulations to the so-called 'save the planet' by moving to electrification and hybrids are killing the true and pure AMGs. Such vehicles you mentioned are for the affordable sales market offered with the 'hamburger with the lot' package for customers in order to boost sales. Again, in my opinion, if it ain't a V8, it ain't an AMG.

@@konkombotis5549an inline 6 or v6 twin/turbo doesn’t slide?
@@konkombotis5549 Not trying to start an argument with you my man, but I just think that's a childish, silly and elitist attitude to have. The two aforementioned cars are amazing little things! Very fast, handle well and a blast to drive. There not cheap either, it's not like someone buys a GT63 4-door and thinks "You know what? I'm gonna buy an A45S too alongside my GT63." Who buys cars like that? I get the impression that you've looked at this car, see that it has flaws, which it does, and assume that all the 4-cylinder AMGs are bad too, because gatekeeping and saying that the amount of cylinders a car's engine has is the deciding factor about whether its called an AMG or not is just bizarre and arbitrary. Nowhere does it say that plug-in hybrids and/or 4-cylinder cars can't be AMGs. Don't be silly.
The first ever AMG had an inline-6, just saying... and have you ever heard of the C30 CDI? The only ever diesel AMG? I think not... If they're AMGs, which they are since _that's what they're called,_ then so is this car. So is the A45S. So is the GLB35. So is every single car Mercedes-AMG gives a name to. If it's called an AMG, then it is one... that's how naming things work.
Again, not trying to start any arguments. Have a good rest of your day my dude.

German here, basically this C63 is more like an Experiment, why they thought to put it onto the Market? No Idea.
It's impressive by itself, if you have driven one of these new C63s you will definitely know what i mean, but i doubt it will sell well because the Core AMG Crowd wants a V8
Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
In light of emissions regulations and all that jazz, I would have understood if they downsized to a beefy V6 or something. Would it have been a "true" C63? No, not at all.
...but 4 cylinders and hybridisation in a supposedly sporty, enthusiast car? Disgrace.
Viele Grüße.
Fellow German from Berlin here, This might just be a feeling but I think the majority of customers for this car will probably be suburban Americans and people who street race them in Kreuzberg and Essen, not true enthusiasts.
Cheers. Loved visiting your town. Always wanted to after watching Band of Brothers. Hoping to make it back there again!
Ola also experimented with the SL, EQS and all failed
I’m English. This car is a result of increasing global Marxism, mainly the climate con. 🤷🏽♂️
A 4-cylinder for a supposed AMG is CRAZY
3 things: Remake your intro animation in a higher resolution, and get sound deadening for the walls in your recording garage to dampen the echo of your voice. You could get something you could hang on hooks maybe? I don't know, but something is definitely needed. It'd also be neat if not useful if you were to review the stock speakers in these vehicles, having to spend money replacing stock speakers can be a determining factor in a vehicle purchase. Love the content, best of luck!

I have an STi and with my Porsche, those are my two favourite cars. But the STi is wonderful because it has a great manual transmission, and it is light as a feather, and stripped from any luxury which means a purist experience. Of course it understeers, but it's a fun pocket rocket, perfect for winter with studded Nokians and a real handbrake. Everything a Merc is not, let alone an AMG. They should have at least downgraded to a V6 instead of a L4. I see a V8 in an STi as much as I see an L4 in a C63 AMG. This is called missing the point in a legendary manner.
Doug is an extremely respected reviewer, and his unbiased take on this car is sure to hurt the sales numbers of the Mercedes AMG C63.
Executives must’ve been drunk on 2024 New Year’s Eve when they made that decision
I totally agree with Doug (and many of the comments here). I just wonder why in the Doug score the C63 is only one point behind the current BMW M3. Based on Doug's own analysis in the video, the gap should be much larger.
the doug score is one of the most arbitrarily applied things on this channel lol don’t worry about it
Because if you have own a bmw m3 you’ll know it’s highly over rated by the media . I have own plenty to know that . Did you realized before Covid price hit they were Pennie’s to the dollar then suddenly they went up in value from the eyes of people who own them but not from people looking to get a cheap car .
Dougscore is based primarily on objectivity, and objectively speaking the 4cyl doesn’t hold the car back that much.
5:50 it looks like a amg line not a real amg model, where are the flared fenders in the back and the aggressive look
That's also how the old C63 sedan and wagon was. Only the coupe got fat, which are the CLE AMG's now
