The glowplugs run for about 90 seconds, so you don’t have to turn the key on and off every time the dash light goes out.

@@DonutHole123 New diesels arent any more expensive to work on than a new gasser, ecoboost or 6.2 from ford or GM. Know what a head gasket job is on a new 6.2 GM truck cuz they keep popping and they dont know why? $7000 and 14 hours labor at GM dealer. I can do a full bulletproof on a 6.0 for 5000 including oil cooler in about 10-12 hours. 7.3s are cheaper than working on about any gas motor made in the last 10 years.

@@austinr09 That's why you stay away from the gas 6.2L from General Motors. The only great gas engines that G.M. ever made has to be the 305,350,400,and 454 including the 4.8L V6,5.3L,6.0L,and 8.1L V8's.The 250-290 I6 were very durable too.The Detroit 6.5L is a cheap and reliable, makes just as much fuel economy as a modern diesel truck, you'll save thousands on one in comparison to a Isuzu Duramax.

aky19832001 extremely high diesel prices in 04, and new pollution laws killed this breed off, good news is these beast run a pretty penny now! 23,600 if around 150,000 miles! The truck had 3 engines if I recall correctly, 99'-04' had the option of a triton v10, or 6.0L v8 turbo, 01'-03 had the 7.3L option and it's the rarest of the bunch! With only a few thousand made each year!

Cycling the key does not re-cycle the glow plugs. The only thing you're doing is putting un-needed strain on the glow plug relay. Once the light goes off, the glow plugs are still getting power. Just leave the key in the on postion, and let it sit for a few seconds after the light goes on then fire it up. It'll start way better then cycling the key like you're doing. Watch the battery gauge it'll shoot back up like a rocket once the glow plugs turn off.

In most parts of Australia, we rarely see below 10C/50F temperatures during the day. In the few areas that do get colder than that, the petrol stations usually sell 'alpine diesel' that has additives that help with cold starting. Is 'alpine diesel' a thing overseas? Or does all diesel already come with the additives?

on my 400,000mi 5.4l, I'll crank it with the ignition off to ware it'll turn over. but will not fire that way oil gets circulated befor it starts and when super cold i use a 8 inch by 8 inch heating pad that sticks onto the oil pan it was like $19.99 i think and it keeps my oil at 100 degrees so when i start it the engine its prelubed from turning it over for about 5 secounds with the ignition off and the oil can actually get tru the passages becouse its been warmed to 100 degrees f dont know if yall ever seen some oils when cold like below zero but i can tell you wallmart oil the 5w 30w has the consistency of taffy and deffenitly would not make it through any passages most likely wouldn't even be able to be picked up by the sump id say engine faiure quick, mobile1 oil actually stays pretty fluidity even at -40 but was noticeably more viscous then when at room temperature amsoil was next best for the cold then Royal Purple and then Walmart oil all of these were all 5w30 now all this test shows is not how good an oil is but what oil is best in cold conditions protection for varying temperatures so if you're going to go into a cold climate it probably be best to use Mobil 1 infact mobile1 has the broadest usible temperature use range vary safe cant go wrong with mobile1 in any temperature. in a mild temperate area you'd be fine with Walmart oil. Royal Purple is the best oil out of the bunch it provides 4 times the protection than even mobile1 dose but if you gena use royal purple in freezing climates then you deffenitly need a heating pad you could even use wallmart oil in freezing condotions but a heating pad would be a must you would 100% destroy your engine with wallmart oil and no heating pad where it's frezzing. amsoil was a little bit more viscous than mobile one but would probly be fine without a heating pad but likely needed a heating pad Amsoil could be used in a cold climate probly be ok without a pad would not be as good as mobile one. all of the oils are very viscous at 0 degrees besides the mobile one and the amsoil but even that was pretty viscous and I would not want to start my engine with that in there another example Italian sports cars tend to break in America's climate because the places where those cars are made have mild temperatures year round so their engines are designed with smaller oil passages tolerances so when moved 2 a colder climate and started in a cold climate the oil can not move through the passages fast enough and the engines end up being oil starved and self destruct that's why the saying goes always let your Italian cars warm up completely before you drive or get thinner oil but personally after looking at how thick all of them were i wouldn't even try to start my vehicles in 0 degree weather unless they wereg pluged in even with mobile1 wich was pretty good i live in albaquerque nm so i dont have to worry about that to much itle get down to 15 10 degrees but i always plug in when the temps drop i use royal purple full synthetic you cant beat it flat out best oil made your engine will ware out 400% slower then other oils moble1 full synthetic is #2 then amsoil full synthetic is #3 then last of course wallmart oil wich i dont even use for my lawn mower, the lesson is look in your owners manual and look what oil your soppossed to use at what temperature it will change high temp areas call for heavyer waight oils and cold climates call for thiner oils. but myself i would just use one of those. small heating pads for $19.99 that keeps my oil at 100 degrees and ready to go and then i have full protection from the 5w30 royal purple engine oil that the engine calls for and provides the best protection for at operating temperatures alot of peaple forget ya you can add the thinner oil in the cold weather to avoid the heat pad but then when you car warms up its not going to be receiving the amount of protection that the 5w30 would provide at operating temperature. so its your choice get thinner oil and have less protection at operating temperatures or get the oil that fully protects your engine at operating temperatures but have to buy a 20$ heat pad

I have 281000 on mine and I'm haveing trouble starting it in 30 degree temps I think I need new glow plugs. You have done steady maintenance to this engine and it shows you will probably get around 700000 miles out of that engine or more I see them with over 600000 quite frequently never overhauled

    • @jasonskinner1555

Maybe I can help with that. I currently own an '02 Ex Limited 7.3 and have owned an '03 Ex Eddie Bauer V10 previously and I was not provided with the codes to either one when I purchased them. To get to that sticker isn't too bad but requires some work, the keypad/keyless entry module is located somewhat behind the radio but more down toward the climate control area behind the dash. As I recall its a 4x8 inch black box. I had to pull the radio, which requires the Ford prong tool, can be had from any auto parts store for like $5, and I pulled the two 7 or 8mm screws that hold on that useless hook thing next to the cigarette lighter. I don't remember which way I had to mangle my body to see it, but with a flashlight and good set of eyes you can look up all around there and see the box, or depending on the sticker orientation, from the radio hole. I think I looked thru the radio on my '03 and thru the hanger hole on my '02 but its there, it was a white sticker with some barcodes as I recall (been a couple years now) and at the top will be the five digit OEM module code. Write it down and break out the owner manual and it will detail how to program your own new one. It can hole two codes, the factory which cannot change, and yours. Hope that helps :-)

No need to cycle the glow plugs. Just leave key in on position.
