The movie was from the early 70's - "Johnny got his gun"... based on the novel by Dalton Trumbo in 1939 about a soldier in World War I (the 1910's) who survived without any of his senses or limbs intact. Metallica based the song 'One' on the story.

You are right about ""It was like a right of passage to play the One Solo" I just ran into a guy i played with 25 years ago, and he literally looked at his friend and said...Dude, he could play the One solo! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The first thing the doctor says is that the cerebrum was irreparably damaged, followed by his assumption that a decerebrated individual cannot think or feel anything. That's why he later says "Had I not been sure of this, I would not have permitted him to live". He didn't realize someone was still inside that shell, desperately trying to cry out.
The film is called Johnny Got His Gun. It's an anti-war film about an American soldier in WWI who takes a direct hit from a mortar round while sheltering in a foxhole. He loses his arms and legs, his sight, hearing, and ability to speak. All he feels is pain, and all he wants is to be allowed to die. Very sad film. If you are interested in the topic, Whose Life is it Anyway? is another excellent film/stage play, starring Richard Dreyfuss as an artist who is rendered quadriplegic in a car accident. He's completely conscious and lucid, and basically has to sue his doctor in order to have the choice.
When I first saw this music video at 14 or 15 years old, it freaked me the fuck out, but I loved it lol. Their very first and best music video, my opinion.

I remember when this video came out. MTV actually played music videos, and they wanted Metallica to release a video for the channel. At the time Metallica pushed back and said no. James wanted to make a song about just a brain. When the book Johnny Get Your Gun was suggested to him. Metallic did buy the rights to the movie and then made this epic video. This song debuted on their album And Justice For All. Ash your facial expressions are so on point. Great reaction15:01
This has nothing to do with being maimed from war, but my father died 7/14/23 of a two year battle with dementia and a stroke that left him without the ability to swallow, so no water or food. He put in his directives that he didn't want any extraordinary measures to keep him alive! After the stroke it took him a month to pass because he kept holding on, his oxygen saturation rate slowly went from 80 to 70 to 60% and it was utterly painful to watch him slowly pass! My father was a brilliant man and was a mechanical engineer and when he was diagnosed with dementia to slowly not be able to speak and to be staring into space is hard to watch! Both my parents had dementia at the same time, my mom is physically ok, but her mind is gone and she has the same medical directives as my father's! I'm not really a metal fan like I was in the 80's, but this a sad but powerful song!
Found you from your Jinjer reactions (yes, Ash, we all feel that way about Tati). Would very much love to see you guys start a Tool journey, if you’re not already fans. Tool is a truly unique experience. Their entire (brief, alas) discography is amazing. Their song “The Pot” is widely regarded as a good intro to the band, if you want to start there. The Tool army will show up in droves to support your channel. Cheers!
"...And Justice For All" & "Master Of Puppets" are two of the greatest metal albums ever recorded. Along with "Live After Death", "A Vulgar Display Of Power" and "Rust In Peace".
The very first Metallica music video, which they demanded in 1989 under ever increasing pressure, was created primarily by MTV and was produced by the band! Because many, many months in advance of One, Lars said that Metallica, never wanted to and would never make a music video! It had a little bit of the background that Lars was already walking on certain small paths of war with the music industry, record labels also with MTV because in his opinion many others, record companies, other industries were already making money without any real performance of their own, etc. and the musicians, artists the last ones were those who were lucky enough to receive a small tip for their work! Lars was already way ahead of the times/knowledge when it came to rights, marketing, and corporate ownership of image and sound rights, as Lars and Metallica were later pushed aside in the 90s with the Napster trial! Today it is Spotify that earns billions of dollars, generates sales and actually pays out a small part of it to all artists worldwide! With this music video One, Lars finally gave in to the pressure from MTV a little bit, but the first version (official full length 7:27 min and the clips from the film) was too "violent and long" for MTV, which in turn was something Lars was worried about It didn't matter, so the second version for MTV was made somewhat mainstream compatible!

the band was actually pretty mad and upset over the music video to the point James Hetfield stormed out of the screening of the rough cut version, they felt like the music was being covered up too much by the dialog in the video, fast forward all these years later and this song and video is legendary.
I'd love to see you guys react to Iron Maiden "Alexander The Great." It doesn't get nearly the attention and love it deserves. Amazing lyrics and and awesome sequence of guitar solos.
This song and the entirety of the "...and justice for all" album was a marked shift for the band. Speaking of ALS, I would recommend looking into American guitar player/composer Jason Becker who has been suffering with the disease for sometime now, yet continues to put out outstanding music
A person should have the right to choose to live or die, especially in Terminal calses, or in a case like in the video, they shouldnt have to suffer. I know i remember a story from a couple or so years back, there this young couple that hadnt been married long, had a baby, and she got diagnosed with brain cancer, and she went to Oregon i believe where its legal along with 9 other states to have physician-aided death, and she went that route so her husband and family or her for the most part, didnt have to get to where she had to suffer from it, because they knew it was coming, and what she was going to have to go though, and ive seen enough people suffer in my life with illness, that i cant blame her. If someone wants to go that route, it should be our right, no one elses.
I was about 10 when this video came out and MTV played it non-stop. It scared me everytime I saw it but I wouldn't turn off or change the channel cuz the song was too good.
Don’t ever watch the movie in the video. I rented it right after this video came out on MTV. My local video store had it. It was 3 hours of pure misery. The color portions are his dreams/memories, the black and white is reality. When the movie was over, I was so emotionally drained, depressed and exhausted that I just rolled over and went to sleep. I was 16 and it was only like 4pm, but I couldn’t get the energy or motivation to do anything except sleep once it was over. It was the single most depressing movie that I’ve ever watched, even to this day 34 years later.
I saw Metallica perform this last night Nov. 12, 2023, in Detroit at Ford Field. The beginning with explosions, there were fire balls shooting up through the stage. For the gunfire they had fire works going off through the stage as well. I've always liked the song, but never liked the music video with the additional movie clips.
they were the first band that was ever my favorite. then lulu happened and i just stopped listening and became a hater. good lord are they one of the best bands of all time. every album has a classic on it
I'm over here in Atlanta Georgia and y'all are literally one of my top five reaction channels and to me Metallica set the bar high early but they did fall off I think it's cool reaction for y'all would be to do different songs of limp Bizkit that would stop 99 it was epic

I'm watching you as Kirk goes into his solo you guys are like statues the hole song sad😢 not good if you like it show it instead of just sitting there c'mon 😊
A goat doesn't sound like that... (Check one out on YT) and Metallica are just NOT the G.O.A.T. anymore... Maybe once, and they still play arenas/ stadiums... but they r just not what they once were circa 1983 - 1993... I grew up at the altar of Metallica in the early 90's... This album 'And justice for all' was gospel to my soul... Just disappointing to see their career from 1996 onwards.
I enjoyed their career 1996 onwards very much. I’m sorry you didn’t. You missed out on some great music. Also, of course they aren’t what they were from 83-93. That’s some of the best music ever made. It’s an unfair standard. It would be ridiculous to expect them to keep releasing all-time great albums.
@@billbrasky1288 I bought everything Metallica put out from 1996 forward... I didn't 'miss' anything... I heard it all. That is why I have this opinion... 😈 I heard '72 Seasons' and it just sounds like they took old riffs and just re-arranged them into a 'new' record... disappointing. The very fact that it fell off the charts real fast proved my opinion is shared by quite a few. I expect Metallica to put out great albums, or am I not? U won't buy a bottle of Pepsi and expect to find it filled w/ salt water, do u? I saw their 'Alternica' phase in the 90's... I saw them live in 2000 and they were boring at points... Again, I was just not blown away (I paid $70 which was a lot back then!) I bought 'St. Anger' in 2003 and I couldn't listen to the whole thing cos it was awful... I saw them live in '03 and it was better, but awful opening band. I bought... 'Death magnetic'... better, but never bothered to see them live again. I bought 'Hardwired'... again an improvement in the right direction. In comparison, I have seen Slayer more than 7 times and they've always blown me away... Bands like Anthrax, Sepultura, Megadeth, Death Angel, Testament, Kreator, Destruction... have actually gotten better w/ age... Death Angel is a band that actually recorded better albums after 2004 than the ones they did in the 80's. Not so much Metallica.
@@sumonjamal1653 1. Record sales don’t mean shit. If they did the Backstreet Boys would be one of the best bands from the 90’s 2. So what if 72 seasons isn’t that great. They’re 60+ years old and you have a whole catalog to choose from
Couldn't disagree more about Metallica live. The environment is electric - but they can't play their own songs. The mess ups are non stop. Hearing Kirk try to play his own solos is embarrassing and he ends up just wandering around till he syncs back up. I recognize the issue is my OCD - I can only go to classical musical performances because they are always accurate, or live music that I don't already know so that I don't know where the mistakes are. Back to Metallica this was an issue all the way back to the Live Shit: Binge and Purge tour. Bought the $150 box set - tossed the VHS tape in the player - and god was the music itself bad. Only properly performed song is their introduction tune from The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly - but that's prerecorded. They are a band that needs the 30 takes in the studio to get it right.
The film is called Johnny get your gun or Johnny got his gun, something like that. One of their best songs for sure back when their music had impact before they sold out.
The genius of the song is how the tempo speeds up as he becomes more frustrated and desperate. The drum bursts sounding like machine guns, and even the guitar solo is chaotic as if his mind is spiraling out of control. The music telling the story along with the lyrics is often overlooked.

With Metallica I find the longer their hair the better the music. Now I may be wrong but have a look for yourself and see if I am right.
Johny got his gun
Australia has passed voluntary dying law
I have the same goat on my desk at work. Watch the Taylor Swift goat version of 'Trouble' Its hilarious
As a transplant recipient, I thank you for your selflessness.
It was on UA-cam for free.
😀
You know nothing I suffered this.
Hopefully one day you will do a reaction to my favorite song from Metallic Welcome Home Sanatorium or maybe you have and l have not come across it .
The Warning may take them out at Wacken 2024!
A must. Watch chris cornell singing one by Metallica using the guitar and rythem of one by U2. Legend.
Thanks for the song Metallica and💙💛✌Слава Україні !
The Black album is about the only album that has songs which get played on the radio, unfortunately.
they were the first band that was ever my favorite. then lulu happened and i just stopped listening and became a hater. good lord are they one of the best bands of all time. every album has a classic on it
Very unpopular, Metallicas best song is "Whiskey in the Jar." Then "Saint Anger." It is what it is for me.
Whiskey in the jar is a cover knucklehead
I'm over here in Atlanta Georgia and y'all are literally one of my top five reaction channels and to me Metallica set the bar high early but they did fall off I think it's cool reaction for y'all would be to do different songs of limp Bizkit that would stop 99 it was epic
If he was man enough to answer the call to go make war with who you told him, please be man enough to return the favor when you know his true wishes with the S O S he messaged.
what does youth in Asia have to do with it? :)
I'm watching you as Kirk goes into his solo you guys are like statues the hole song sad😢 not good if you like it show it instead of just sitting there c'mon 😊
It's borderline racialist to blame the youth in Asia for any of this.
I heard '72 Seasons' and it just sounds like they took old riffs and just re-arranged them into a 'new' record... disappointing.
Again, I was just not blown away (I paid $70 which was a lot back then!)
I bought 'St.
@@sumonjamal1653 you’re entitled to your opinion
@@billbrasky1288 Sales figures don't lie... they r not an opinion.
Biggest metal band in the world and '72 Seasons' is not even on the charts...
Megadeth is better
Get over it Dave you just weren't working out
Oh, are we ranking by number of alcoholics?
Johnny got his gun
The film is called Johnny get your gun or Johnny got his gun, something like that. One of their best songs for sure back when their music had impact before they sold out.
When and how did they “sell out”? They’ve never done anything except make music they wanted to make. They never bowed down to anyone.
