There is a retired American baseball player named Mariano Rivera. He played for the New York Yankees. His nickname was "The Sandman." Whenever he entered a game from the bullpen (where relief pitchers stay during baseball games) , "Enter Sandman" was the song the stadium played when he entered games to pitch. Mariano Rivera is the greatest closer in Baseball history and the only baseball player EVER to be voted into the Hall of Fame with an 100% vote. Anyway, when Mariano Rivera announced his retirement Metallica came to Yankee Stadium and performed Enter Sandman Live for Rivera's last game that he pitched in Yankees Stadium. It was epic to have Metallica show up to support his retirement from baseball.

@@terripanzarella6832 I understand the dislike for the Yankees, but there were a couple that were hard to dislike. Mariano Rivera (never showed up hitters after strikeouts), Derek Jeter (just played hard), and Andy Pettitte Came in , pitched, won, & walked off the mound quietly win or lose). I started following the Yankees in 1980. I have been through the good times and the bad--hahaha.

AC/DC, Metallica, Montley Crue, Queensryche, The Black Crows, and of course Pantera. With Metallica bringing in the most fans and longest set list even though AC/DC was headliner. And yes they played Master Of Puppets at this show.
Hands down best cover/reimagining of Enter Sandman is The Warning. It is the first track on Metallicas Black list 30th anniversary album. If Metallica put there name on it you know it's worth a reaction.
And if Ash likes Master Of Puppets you should check out Gamazdas piano cover of it. Will blow your mind that one person can do all of it.

It comes as a surprise to some people that particularly in the east of europe you might see american confederate flags in places. One of the reasons is when the americans were in europe during world war 2, they had confederate flags as well as the stars and stripes, sometimes draped over their vehicles too etc. So literally there are cases where american soldiers donning confederate flags liberates camps etc. Thats the interesting thing about flags, and what they mean to different people. For example, what would the US stars and stripes mean to a native american, or say, a vietnamese person? Or the union jack to the irish and so on.
In any case, this show is legendary in rock history, but so badly managed by the authories that people died at it!

When they showed it back then the said the helicopters were to "calm" the crowd. I don't think I appreciated that this was thee 1st open air concert, that it was more than a concert after the oppressive situation the country had been under and the helicopters probably felt more like a threat. I can't imagine as a performer you'd ever duplicate the adrenaline rush. The big hair metal bands were unmatched in the 90's.

However, the USSR would collapse within months. The Warsaw pact countries first and then the Soviet ruling party finally. However, it should be considered that Gorbachev and Yeltsin had to struggle greatly to hold back hard line party members. Putin, a strong supporter of the hard line party ended up in power. That was an epic show. That song from their "black" album was the one that sent them in the stratosphere! After the epic Masters of Puppets it wasn't easy to come back from that. Lot of older fans like me thought that it was too commercial and that album was sh**, but years later I now realise how great of an album it is. They needed the change so they could move on. When Cliff Burton died (bass) they simply couldn't play the same. Good for them.

But when you are talking about 1,600,000 people... there's no police department in any city that can handle that shit. National Guard has to come.

Wasn't at the beginning (nor enter sandman, neither creeping death), was at almost the end of their setlist of that show, that was only 1 hour btw. James and Kirk told in interviews how the chopper went down and screamed to the people to stop while they were playing, army has to interfiere.

There is a myth that people died at the concert which is false.
There were some injuries which is pretty amazing that it was that little considering.
The Soviet would officially fall months later.
The Confederate Flag is there because I'm sure they thought it was a another American flag.
In the background the Union Jack is also flying.
Image if that crowd really wanted to rush the stage. The military personnel wouldn't have stood a chance.
I'm not saying beating people was ok but I'm sure the soldiers were a bit terrified of what would happen if things kicked off.
