The song was based on a movie called "Johnny got his gun'" however, the song wasn't written for the movie since the movie is from 1971 and the song was released in 1988.
The song was based on the book. They wanted to use footage from the movie but realized it would be easier to buy it. So they bought it.

It's so hard to imagine that anyone hasn't heard Metallica. Next year will be their their 40th anniversary. I sure hope you guys will explore some of their massive discography, starting from the early albums, especially Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. They were the metal band that every other band wanted to be in the 80's, but nobody really came close.
Slayer didn't want to be Metallica. They wanted to be heavier than Metallica but Slayer was going in a different direction.

Fun Fact: "One" was the first Metallica song for which a music video was created; it debuted on on Headbanger's Ball, a late night heavy metal show on MTV on January 20, 1989.
They also released 3 albums before this, during the height of MTV with absolutely no music videos, and virtually no radio play, and still became a huge band by this time.
They were one of the last "top" bands to join the "Video Era" wanting people to instead form their own ideas from their songs. When they finally made a video they went all the hell in.
I think to fully understand Metallica's popularity is to watch 1991 Live in Moscow Enter Sandman. 1 million to 1.6 million people on an airstrip right after the fall of the Soviet Union. Simply incredible.

I saw Metallica play this song on July 24th, 1988, Los Angeles Monsters of Rock. The album this song is from, And Justice For All, wasn't released until September 1988. I heard this song 2 months before it was released and it literally changed my life.

I've been listening to Metalllica since '85, and saw them live in '88. Master Of Puppets album is where it's at. They were so ahead of the pack in the 80's and broke a lot of ground.

Loved this song as a child. Now i can truly understand and feel this song. Have had no amputations but been in 3 comas in last 6 years. I know now you hear everything. Brain dont completely know and your confused but you know whats going on around you. My brain heard things and then twisted what i heard so be careful what you say in front of people in coma it can be scary place. But give love they know you are there.

A tidbit that often gets missed by reactors to this song. When the double kick drums start it is to simulate the sound of machine gun fire and grows more intense as the guitars join in. The whole intent of that section of the song is to simulate the chaos of war via their instruments.
Fun fact the drum beat during the solo is actually playing Morse code for SOS

As mentioned by Chrisj they just signed with Lava/Republic the only band from Mexico and only Rock Band from Latin America to ever sign directly with a major U.S. record label and they got complete creative control of their music as they are singer-songwriters which are never given to a newly signed artist, that tell you a little bit about their talent. Dust to Dust is a great song that really showcases the drummer! This song is the prolog for this concept album's narrative. I'd recommend this one as a start from the list above.
That would be a good choice, although anything in that list is good. A lot of reactors are really getting hooked on that album for good reason.

The cool thing about this song is that it doesn't immediately scare away non-metalheads, since it starts so softly and melodically, with meaningful lyrics that are easy to make out. Then, with the new listener on board, it carefully ramps up so little at a time that it never really loses the listener.

This song was not made for a movie. The movie is called Johnny Got His Gun and came out in the late 60's. It was an anti war movie. It's about a man that goes to war and gets hit by a bomb. When he wakes he finds out that he has no arms, no legs, can't speak, can't hear, and can't talk. He's trying to tell the people to kill him. And he remembers his dad telling him to communicate by banging his head and doing SOS. This song came out in the late 80's.

I've seen many reactions to One... some seem to grasp the gravity of the song and some don't. In my opinion, I know reviewers "got it" if they almost forget to pause and just stare. You guys got it.

Metallica - Creeping death live in Milton Keynes 1993
The movie is the what built the song....this what started Metallica's voice...They hated the injustice of everything...just like being called sell outs because taking an affirmative action against the injustice of war and the result of it....
There were three versions of the video: the full version with movie clips, a clean cut with out the clips, and the the “Just Jamming” version where they had the monitors turned in on them jamming. I have in my collection the VHS tape called 2 of One that have the clip version and the just jamming on it. The video channels used to play the clip free shorter version

Hey guys for the video "ONE", the movie clips are from the movie " Johnny get your gun or Johnny got his gun" it was done years before Metallica did the song. They did however buy the rights to the movie so they would not have to pay royalties any time the video played. Just thought you would like to know. Fun fact until And Justice for All they had almost no radio play in America and yet were still more famous than some of the radio hit bands.

I saw them in 90' in Sydney Australia at the Horden Pavillion and what I remember of it was incredible. For a bloke that moved bands around I find it difficult to believe you haven't heard them before apart from _Enter Sandman_

Love the channel guys, an interesting set of videos you guys should check out is the best freestyle wrestling throws. I'm not sure how popular wrestling is over there but there are 3 main types. The main one that is wrestled in the US is folkstyle where you are simply trying to pin your opponent on their back, but in freestyle, you are trying to "toss/throw" your opponent. Some of the tosses can be pretty insane; especially the suplexes! Hopefully, you guys see this and make a video on it, my notifications are turned on so hope to see it soon, Cheers!

I rented this movie from my local video store (I’m old, get off my lawn) when I was a teenager, after this video came out. It was the most depressing 3 hours of movie I’ve ever watched. When it was over, I didn’t want to move, I didn’t want to do anything. I just rolled over and went to sleep. I can still remember how I felt. Metallica was against doing any sort of videos, until this. When they did a video they wanted it to be more than just some generic crap. I’d say they succeeded.
actually they did this song as a homage and telling of the plot to the anti-war 1939 Novel and the 1971 flop Movie "Johnny Got His Gun" and because they added clips from the 1971 film they helped turn Johnny Got His Gun into a Popular Cult Classic film
When this video made #1 on MTV's weekly top ten (if I remember correctly), every metalhead I knew, including myself, felt a sense of "See? Told you this shit was better than that pop crap you've been listening to." Still is.

Metallica owns the rights to “Johnny got his gun” buying the rights were cheaper then paying the creators every time the song got played. Plus this was Metallica’s first video release so it was bound to get massive MTV play.

Fun fact alert: This song was based on the book and movie "Johnny Got His Gun", and Metallica bought the rights to the movie to do the video with without paying royalties every time the video was played. THEN they forgot they had the rights for it for years, until releasing it on DVD in 2009 via Shout Factory.
I saw them do this at the NEC on the black album tour sadly Jason was still with them and they were at their best.

Actually, The Band of Metallica bought the Rights to the old movie to keep from having to pay royalties Everytime the music video aired.
I saw them 3 times before this came out. It was them and the other three metal bands for a while. One that should have been in to make it 5 bands, is Testament". Some say they sound like Black Sabbath. They came out one year before this movie did in 1970, and had 4 amazing albums in a row. Jason Robards was in great movies for decades too. All the Presidents Men -- Magnolia -- A Boy and His Dog... he had 53 years of acting, movies and tv series...

Hello Gents! Hope that you're staying as safe as possible! ........--- if you look for the Live version of this on UA-cam, you may find the version from the Seattle Washington Kingdome Concert 1989! And Justice For All- had just been released and we hadn't even heard it yet, which Metallica confirmed for us on stage. They played Harvester of Sorrow and Blackened first, and then----- One. That was literally one of the first times that this song was performed live. We were dumbfounded (obviously) by the first few minutes of it, and then; Blown Away!
