Queen hunting is best after dark. But u gotta be careful of ppl, & what they think ur doing. Dusk, I was observing the ants, had my headlamp on. Going thru my rounds of the local ant colonies. Park rangers come rolling up on me, with guns drawn, wanting to know what I'm doing. I showed em my backpack, with test tubes, & ant stuff. Someone called the police saying that I was planting bombs. Going from one location to another location, & digging into the ground. I was going from ant colony to ant colony, & just scouring the ground looking for queens. I'm friends with the park rangers now. They know what I'm actually doing now. Don't mind other ppl, if anything, bring em into what ur doing, & educate them. Anyways, great video, informative.
Wow, great story! Or actually scary story lol. Good thing they didn’t go with what they assumed right then and there. I also walk around the park at night, and luckily there’s other people at the park too walking around. But nothing too sketchy for me, since I look like I’m just looking for something on the ground. Hope you’ve been able to find queens doing that and safe anting!
@@EnderAnts all because someone thought I looked suspicious, & assumed something completely different from what I was actually doing. excellent video. i caught 4 acorn queen ants in july and they now have a nice pile of eggs and larvae. i recently caught a rare (for my area) pheidole queen, which i mistook at first for a lasius social parasite because of its big head and powerful mandibles. and just an hour ago i caught a brachymyrmex depilis queen. all ants were caught at night with a black light.
thank you so much, i lost my ants at the start of the year they got out not sure how but have been wanting more since. The other day I went outside and saw a Huberia striata alate so i picked her up, I don't reckon she was successful in the nuptial flight found her drowning in a pool. But tonight when I watched this video i went outside copied what you did and found 2 queens! Huberia striata is a polygyne species which was good because I only had one free ant farm.
That was me too during the beginning of May and June. But try going out of the city or town, and go to a forest, or desert. More diverse species there.
I have no idea why but 9:38 to the end of the video is just a still shot of a log. I tried watching it on my xbox, old ass android phone, and some cracked windows phone, but to no avail. I was only able to watch the whole video after downloading a VPN. Worth it.
Your area is much different than mine. I found a queen today, but I think it is sick because it was with other ants attracted to candy. I found a different ant two years ago that did that and it grew a fungus in the tube. I am hoping it is okay anyway, but it acts a bit odd. It is not Formica or Camponotus. I am just guessing at Crematogaster or Tetramorium, because it is a smallish queen. It has a "spur" between the thorax and gaster. There are no imported fire ants in the area because it is too cold in winter. I put her in a tube, and gave her a little honey.
Depends on the species. If the queen was wild caught and she already has a colony, then yes, grab as many workers from that colony. If theyre from different colonies, then the workers could kill the queen, and its a risky choice doing it that way.
I'd say they last around a month or two. But larger ones last easily more than 5 or 6 months. All matters on how warm the area is where you keep your test tubes.
I live in lousiana when do you think i could catch a queen for the past couple days i've been looking on my trails and the woods and i have had no luck i've seen a lot of fire ants tho and one had wings but it was on top of another nest
If you live out in the country, could leave your porch lights on? I have done this once and caught 2 Campo’s but I think it just might be a coincidence.
Definitely try it! Ants are attracted to the light and if you’re out in the country, there should be tons of different species out there. Best of luck :D
Its sad when you have a queen and it produced so many eggs and just dies :( worst case scenario if that if you do not have the same species of ant that can brood boost the eggs, you are either gonna have to scrap it or buy a queen online. Feel for those types of hobbiests out there who have had this happen to them.
It really brings up your hopes and then brings it back down 😔😔 I’m sure lots of us can relate. Hoping this year will turn out different with close to none being unsuccessful!
For me it took between 1-3 weeks. Some will be really picky starting out, and others will be ready to go once in a test tube. These are Crematogaster by the way :D

Hi ender ants. Its ant universe I am not sure what month in the summer I should go hunting for queen ants. Also what time of day. PS. I live in New York.
Usually the most queen ants fly in the months of June-August, but since its already September, you might be able to find some queens. I would recommend going to parks (if you can), sidewalks with grass, trails, or even black lighting.
don’t be down about it for too long. it could have been a number of reasons; stress, disease, or just a random death that happens sometimes. I hope you find another :D
You can't positively tell Solenopsis invicta from Solenopsis xyloni without a microscope. Some features like the color work but aren't very reliable. What makes you think they're defintly invicta anyways?
They’re not available anymore I don’t think. However other ant stores I recommend for ants and ant products are: Tarheelants AntsAustralia Stateside Ants Buckeye Myrmecology
Hmm, unfortunately I don’t know any in-store places that sells test tubes. I could only find them on Amazon or eBay. Try searching up test tubes for sale in your area and see if anything pops up

your mystery bug looks like a root borer. My recommendation for termites is complete darkness. some termites are actualy harmed or killed by light.
Oh really I didn’t think termites hated light because I went to my cousins soccer game and they attacked us in broad daylight

Is it best to put in workers as well as a queen to start an ant colony so the queen isn’t that stressed?

Ender Ants, how did you catch the male drones with the queens?
I found them on the ground much like the queens, and just caught them by the wings. They’re more active when flying so it can be hard to catch them!
