    Boy have I got a story for the AC family! I just last year had bought an ant nest bundle including a nest, outworld, and a test tube setup up from Antscanada. I was ready to begin my search for a queen to start a colony. I spent months of time searching, but only came across three different queens, none of which I was looking for, but I still wanted to catch them anyway for experience, but in this, the Camponotus died, the unidentified Fire Ant queen escaped, and so did a incredibly small species of ant (origin of Illinois). I spent all of this year's winter preparing again and was not able to find anything until last night. My house is quite old, and was built in the late 1800's, meaning we have quite a few cracks, however my family doesn't mind. I was walking into my kitchen last night to grab a glass of water when all of a sudden I find a winged creature (I assumed at first it was a type of beetle) but at closer glance I realized it was an ant queen, just walking into my bathroom! I quickly ran to my room, and grabbed a test tube and a cotton ball and scooped her up! I can't believe this luck! Share your stories below if you wish, just thought I'd share with the AC family. I'm almost positive it's tetramorium sp. E, which is the species i've been searching for. Hope everyone has a great day.

    Its been almost exactly a year to date when I started watching AntsCanada, I remember when this channel popped up in my 'recommended for you' section, and I was sceptical at first. I didn't think Ants could be interesting, the way I was raised we viewed them as pests to get rid of. Yet here I am, almost one year later. I have every Saturday bookmarked in my calendar to tell me to come back to watch the video, not like I need the reminder though. Needless to say, this is one of my favourite youtube channels, I've had my phases of watching people for months at a time or things like that, but no matter what, week after week, you always seem to help me learn new things about Ants and the world I hadn't known before. I think I speak for all of the AntsCanada Family when I say this; Thank You. From the bottom of our hearts thank you for what you do. It may not seem like much uploading once (or now twice!) a week talking about Ants for the world to learn, but for some of us, these 20-minute videos are a high point in our week. Sorry for my rant but I felt like I had to share on my one-year Antiversery! Its #AntLoveForever!

    Hey AC Family, I recently wondered into your videos while I was deployed. They help the time go by, and give me something to look forward to each week. Having that little something can be a huge help when your so far away from your friends, family, and everything you've known. I wanted to say thank you for all the hard work you and this community put into the passion that is ant keeping. Being in the military means that having pets, especially ants isn't possible because of the constant movement, so your videos have been my way of raising, and keeping ants vicariously through you and the community. Since I haven't been watching these videos for very long, I was curious about if you have considered, or if you already do a video each year during the nuptial flight season showing off this great community's queen captures.
    Thank you again A.C. and A.C. Family,
    I look forward to the continued ant love forever.

    AC Question of the Week! There are several reasons why this place provides a great hunting ground for queens, mentioned in previous and today's video. One reason is that the cement makes it easier to see the ants, and is easier to traverse than other areas. Also, a river is located just near by, which can provide a water source for many plants and animals, including ants. These are the main reasons I believe that that path makes a good hunting ground for queen ants, although you didn't find any this week. Ant love forever!

    I havne't fully watched the video, but I have a question. So you, as an ant enthuisiast, would never miss a chance to catch some Queen ants. When you've done this, what do you do about the amount of queen ants you caught? Surely you don't make them all into your own colonies?

    • @AntsCanada
      @AntsCanada  6 років тому +18

      Great question! Well, first off, not all queens caught end up making it. Some die during the founding stage or some are not fertilized and die in their test tubes. Many take a long time to get to an established colony while others advance much faster than others. I recommend for people to put up their excess queens for adoption through the GAN Project. They can help local ant keepers acquire ant colonies of species they are certain is from their area (and not imported illegally/irresponsibly from abroad) and you can make a few bucks doing what you love.

    I have taken care of natural made ant colonies in my grandmother's front and back yard. This is all of them and their numbers (from the visible eye)
    1st colony: Ember Imperium, a mature colony i found near my driveway. They are tropical fire ants, haven't seen their queen yet, but they are the most scientifically forward colony I've seen. They manage multiple nests, which are connected by strands of silk. Their favorites food, right now, is a fresh apple.
    2nd colony: The Black Mass, a smaller, more distant, black ant colony. They are the more scavenge-type colony. Queen has not been seen yet. Their favorite foods are oranges and apples.
    And the third colony: the Fire Crusaders, their queen has been seen as of today. Favorite food: Oranges.

    Myrmica is a great advise. I scooped these up in a garden in Amsterdam. These M. rubra workers were stinging the children of the owners, who asked for my help. Anyway, I relocaded most of the huge polygenous colony, while keeping about ten queens and sufficient workers. They displayed very interesting territorial behaviour. I find their stings not painfull, just a little itchy.

    • @AntsCanada
      @AntsCanada  6 років тому +5

      Not painful?! They hurt INCREDIBLY! I once was standing on a nest of Myrmica, and one got me on my chest (of all places) and it stung for at least 10 minutes!

    First ..this path cuts in half the park so ants have to pass from it in order to find food or something . In addition in the path we can see easier the ants than if they were in thick grassland . The river may provide them water too. Lastly, ants may prefer the pathway for meeting their mates because chemical signs can be easily detectable because of no obstacles

    I have a very good story for everybody! Well actually 2! :). So one time I was looking for a queen ant with my test tube and ant nest. I found 3. Not sure what 2 of them were but I know that one of them was a camptonotis (idk how to spell it) they all escaped through the vent I had them next to by them chewing through the cotton balls. So I was walking to my bathroom and I found one! I grabbed it with my test tube and raised it. (It was a mica fire ant) then I was walking outside and found 3 more of the same one! So I put them in one nest. They started laying so many eggs!! I kept finding more and more!! They were awesome. But then when I moved to my nana and papa’s house I had to get rid of them because my nana has an ant fobia idk what it’s called so I put them in a huge bush in the forest next to my house. I was sad but still visit them! I know where their new nest is and whenever I find a queen I put it there. Story #2. (This was a few days after my first story) So I was walking with my friend Nathan and he had an ant farm. And he was collecting mica fire ants! So I said “I know where a bunch of them are” and he said, “woah cool show me!” I said “follow me to my colony!” He looked very confused. I showed him and he started grabbing them and putting them in his farm. One of them was able to get on his hand! Then more came and started stinging him!! He was screaming and I was laughing while helping him. He had to be taken to hospital and he didn’t blame me. He blamed himself for his dumb actions of being to excited. We’re still best friends to this day!

I feel since you started making the naturalistic setups I just lost interest. It’s no different then seeing them outside. Using artificial nests and having success with it brings a hole new level of fun and interest.

    If you have a saltwater pool or know someone who does, it is a great place to look around for queens after a rainstorm. I don't know why but I found 4 queens (all mated) near my saltwater pool and could not find them anywhere else.

  • @darthplagueis13
    @darthplagueis13 6 років тому +11

    Myrmica are pretty nasty indeed. We usually have one or two colonies of them in the garden and getting stung by them is not really a pleasant experience. Whilst they are not so incredibly demobilizingly painful like for example bullet ants their stings will hurt and itch for days and the sting zones also have a tendency to swell, comparatively as if you touched a stinging nettle. One sting(actually it's not really a sting but rather a bite since they don't have stingers. Instead they will bite your skin and then immeditately inject their acid into the wound) isn't that bad actually, however if you somehow upset them for example by stepping onto their nests(which happens quite easily because they don't have proper ant hills but instead just a shallow underground den with a bit of loose earth on top) you can easily contract like ten bites at the same time which is just awful.

    • @Earlington421
      @Earlington421 6 років тому +2

      Actually don't catch these, they need to break off the wings to be mated hince you can start a ant farm with her eggs. These most likely are still in fertile and some winged ants are not queens

    • @Red-wb2ey
      @Red-wb2ey 6 років тому +3
