    Just discovered this!! I found it very satisfying this past week by just grabbing my water colors and just doing whatever on my journal pages. No rhyme or reason.❤

    My favorite tip is the most obvious - you can just have a play and only make backgrounds or first layers in your journal. When I sit down to create I always feel like I need to work toward completing a full piece. The pressure can be frustrating and overwhelming. The idea that I can truly just play and not complete a full piece is such a relief...and, something that never crossed my mind. Duh! I love that idea, and it will be something I use quite a bit. Especially on those days when I want to do something but the motivation/time constraints/ideas elude me. I have never kept a junk journal and I think that's another thing that sometimes holds me back. I have nice journals that I feel pressured to keep 'nice'. That limits the self-expression and experimentation I want to do so I wind up doing nothing because I can't do anything I'm not sure will work. I will be watching for those advertising books that come in the mail (like the ones you use) so I can get started on a junk journal. I love that idea and feel like it opens a whole new world of pressure-free experimental creative play - I can't wait to try it!
    Thank you for opening my eyes once again. I've been doing art for years and feel like I've gotten in a creative slump. I've gotten stuck in a rut where ideas (or at least new ideas) are difficult to come up with. I struggle to create new things - or at least new-to-me ideas. I feel like I create the same things over and over for the most part. You've gotten me out of that slump by opening up my eyes to all sorts of new techniques and ideas. The idea I think I am most grateful for is the permission to just go crazy and play. Not everything has to result in a fully completed piece. That's big! That gives me so much freedom - permission to work quickly. To try out new ideas or color combinations and not worry about the outcome. To play with supplies that strike me as interesting at the moment. To just play openly without putting so much pressure to be neat and careful. It's a whole new world! I can't wait to explore this new idea and see what happens.
    Thank you for releasing all the pressure I didn't realize I felt. I'm going to have to work at getting rid of the stifling pressure that can be so (soul) suffocating, but the idea that the pressure is self-inflicted and can be released is huge for me. Thank you. For creating another great video full of fantastic tips and ideas. For always reminding your viewers that art isn't the end-all be-all - things can always be changed, covered up, or worked around. But my deepest gratitude comes from the permission to release all the pressure I didn't even realize I was feeling. That's HUGE! I can't wait to see how this changes things for me - I see this as a total game-changer that will definitely affect the way I create. I have a deep appreciation for that enormous gift and just want you to know how profoundly you have touched me. It's like seeing art through new eyes - it's scary but super fun. I can't wait to create with this new attitude and these interesting new "secrets" and tips. This will open so many creative doors for me - and I want you to know I am incredibly grateful to (and for) you! ❤💜💚🧡

      That is so wonderful Katherine. I know I have said this to you before but your comments always touch me in some way and this one went straight to my heart! It means so much to me to know that my sharing helps you. I am so pleased you are feeling inspired and open to new creative avenues. It is hard to not get stuck sometimes, and the pressures can just squeeze the creativity out of us. So I am so glad you are feeling renewed and buzzing with inspiration and ready to go through that door to see what is through it! Thank you Katherine. 💖🎨

    Great tips Kim. I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist and it takes a lot of self chastising to be wild and free with my pages. I wish I could be like that but when I do it I look at my page and think, "it's a total train crash", and I bin it. I need to keep those pages and add more layers to them. I am very interested to see what you do with these pages you have done here. Thanks very much, Kim. xxx

      @KimDellow  6 років тому +2

      +Dorothy Radley no problem Dorothy. I've kind of trained the planning part of the art process really well with having to work for deadlines and I too have great difficulty with the being free and letting go part, so I've been trying to train that side up as well. Definitely don't bin the stuff you think is rubbish. Leave it and come back to it at a much later stage. You never know, with distance you might look at them differently 😃

    No palette knife/old plastic card? I use bits of cardboard from the recycling. If it’s too thin and floppy just fold it over a few times until it’s stiff enough. Makes interesting textures anyway.

    I loved this video! This appeals to me! I am new to art journaling and am acquiring supplies. The white tub I saw you use throughout this video-was this paint or gesso? Can one use gesso to give texture to a piece or is that a different product?

    • @KimDellow
      @KimDellow  4 роки тому

      Ooo so it's been awhile since I've watched this video and I can't remember. But I usually list what I use in the description. I suspect that it was white paint in this vid (I can't access the description in this app to check!). But you can use gesso to add texture to pieces in different ways, like it adds a nice natural resist for example. But it all depends on what the texture is you want. So for example if you want a strong physical texture then molding pastes are good for that.

    As a new subscriber I have a question. It looks like you use magazines for painting on rather than mixed media or watercolor paper. Do you gesso the pages before hand to make them sturdier? Love the idea of using up all of my old magazines!! Great videos!

    • @KimDellow
      @KimDellow  5 років тому

      Thanks for the question Judy. So I call these my junk journals and they are actually the type of flyers you can pick up at events. I tend to go for the ones that are made from matte paper and the paper isn't too flimsy. I talk more about them in this video: ua-cam.com/video/SLVs52pJCvE/v-deo.html I usually only prep them with gesso if I want to tone down the page, otherwise I don't bother for these. I hope that helps.

      +Hannah Sheehan thank you Hannah, it is great to have you on board! I do have a tip! Try using a sheet of ordinary baking paper between the pages! I hope that helps! I must admit I've only had a couple of pages stick from time to time and I use baking paper between pages that I want to keep in good condition.

    The only issue while using acrylic on journals is that the pages stick to each other. Any tips on avoiding that?

    • @KimDellow
      @KimDellow  5 років тому +1

      You are right, it can stick sometimes can't it? So if the acrylic paint is sticky I put a piece of baking paper or parchment paper between the pages. I find that helps. But quite often I dilute with water on art journal pages and the acrylic paint won't have that same glossy tackiness to them but will still adhere to the paper just fine.
