I'm an art student trying to build up my portfolio and i've recently bought some acrylic inks. I've briefly used them in my college course but i felt a bit intimidated by them!! This has been so helpful and you've reminded me that its okay to just experiment and not every outcome has to be perfect. Thank you so much!! You explain the process' in a brilliant way thats easy to understand 🥰
Jacksons art supplies store has a freebie section. I got lots of gorgeous sample sized goodies, many are from quite high end brands. If not free they are only £1 or £2. Bet they would send you extra goodies if you write a note similar to your message above.
Fantastic techniques. I just started with this product and absolutely love it and I love just playing with products. Thank you, I will enjoy trying these.
Thank you. Just received my acrylic inks-6 bottles in the mail. Had no idea how to be creative with them. You helped me very much with all the examples, can't wait to try them out.
I have been doing heavy body acrylic painting like do oils and just started to get into acrylic inks, really appreciated the techniques you shared, thanks a lot.
Great tips! I just purchased some acrylic ink and that’s my first venture into inks so this will be great to try. I started to dabble in gel prints, so this would also be great for that! Thank you!
I had no idea you got so many different kinds of ink. I don’t have any - not even distress reinkers. Loved the marks you get from string - that’s really creative. Great ideas! Xx
I use acrylic ink with a dipping pen or with a fine paintbrush. My top tip is always to decant the ink into 15ml/half-ounce bottles then i can dip away without the droppers getting in the way. I use black acrylic ink a lot, it's like indian ink except it flows better and will not smudge if you brush colours over the top.
I absolutely love your encouraging give it a go attitude. A lot of people are all for the rules of their products which can be intimidating. You are so open and creative. One technique I was itching for you to try is to manipulate drops and splashes by blowing with a drinking straw like we did when we were in school. It's really fun and gives lovely effects.
Thank you Elaine, I am so glad you enjoyed the video. Oh yes that is a wonderful technique, can't believe I didn't include it! D'Oh! Thanks for suggesting it!
Thanks for this video. Very useful. Love that you also show what happens if you use it 'wrong' (although there hardly is anything wrong in art). I especially loved the string techniques. I'm still working out what kind of inks I'm gonna buy. Up to then I will try this with acrylic paint and watercolors.
I am using fountain pen ink and metallic acrylic ink. With brushes, sponge pads, cutout pieces of leather pressed against the paper. Dip pens. Once I mixed it with washing up liquid on one occasion and a long straw and blowing bubbles onto paper. My grandaughter loved that before the social isolation sadly but I have it planned for when things return to normal. Its all good fun!
I have a few different kinds of acrylic inks (lots of colors), and had put them away after my first few experiments with them, but earlier this past week I pulled out my container of them and just played and played for over 2 hours making background pages. I had so much fun. I got some great ideas from you. I do not think that inks are my favorite medium, but they are definitely fun to just let loose.
+Heidi Lilley I'm glad you have been revisiting them. They are definitely a fun medium to play with aren't they? Even if it is just every now and again. I'm the same, I kind of revisit them from time to time. 💜😁
Really liked your video! I have full range of Jane Davenport ink bottles, but I’ve only tried drops as I didn’t really know what to use the inks for. This is so inspiring, thank you!!
This is so great. You're so creative, Kim. Thank you! I love Tracy Verdugo's acrylic ink paintings, and was always wondering how she did it. I'm a step closer now, thanks to you, haha.

So fun and can't wait to work on some backgrounds for my first love, watercolor! Thanks so much for sharing your creativity! xx
Some great techniques Kim. I love the string one. I have Winsor & Newton inks but I haven't used them yet. I will have to dig them out and have a go. Thanks Kim. xxx

Hello kim, thanx so much for the lesson. So helpful for a new as me... question : Aqrylic / oil / ink which will be the first on a Canvas on a bottom Which can i use for a mix- art i am using acrylic combined with sakura pigma micron ink pen to doodle on my canvas..love the combined mix art. Can you make all the kinds here which combination i can use with one another and which will be the first on the canvas ?
That is a big question! As it really depends on what acrylic, oils and inks you are talking about and how you use them. Without knowing how you use them, and the art that you do, I would just really say get a cheap canvas and play to find your own way. If you are using oil paints, I can't advice as I have yet to use them in a big way. If you are using oil pastels or crayons it really depends on how you are using them, but things are less likely to sit on top of them easily unless they are other oils.
Oh yes I love string loving that last one where you've gone round in a circle..... also you can pull the string out from between 2 pieces of paper... make a loop first load the string with paint then pull...
You're welcome. ... you need to hold the paper down to make the effect with the string. I think it would work with ink as well as paint. Its a lovely effect. 😊
I’m doing alcohol ink now, but I am going to get some acrylic ink as well! Do you think smooth watercolor paper would be better to use if you are using more water with the inks? I don’t want my paper buckling when it gets wet! Thanks I just subbed to your channel!
Hi, thanks for becoming a subbie! Mixed media paper and watercolour paper take wet materials well, so heavyweight papers of 290gsm or more. You may also need to tape them down to a board whilst you work and let them dry on the board. Some times pre-treating them with water (search 'stretch paper' on UA-cam) is good for stopping warping. But really it depends on your paper and how much warping you can put up with.
Kim Dellow I’ve been researching all the different kinds of inks. I’m working with the alcohol inks and resin now. Getting a big load of stuff done for craft fairs!
You are delightful. I’m so frustrated with acrylic inks! I made a huge mess. *sigh. I so look forward to your posts. I’m using liquitex, Daler Romney and Dr. Ph Martin’s. I loved the mat printing!
Mmm I don't actually know! I haven't tried it. I have only used watercolors or dyes in my brush pens so far. I suppose as long as the ink didn't dry out in any of the brush parts it would be ok? But I don't think I would trust it not to dry out and clog up the brush!
I use the metallics and titanium white from liquitex with a dip pen and/or paint brush myself. I live in a very humid climate which makes using regular pens like Sakura gelly roll pens a pain as they tend to clog, making them unusable/waste of money. So I gotta go 'old school' haha.
+Catherine Peddel I've got a couple of different ones. The ones with the small diameter are from Jackson's Art, if you go via the link in the supplies list you get to two/three sorts, it's the smaller cheaper one, 6cm wide. Really enjoyed this video, as looking for different ideas, techniques to start up Art again. Very well explained, and your voice reminds me so much of actress Sally Geeson !.. ( from 70's comedy, 'Bless This House ')😃
I have been using alcohol inks but am thinking of changing to acrylic ink, assuming it is much safer and less expensive to finish with protectant media.
Hi Kim ! Thank you for showing interesting techniques. I use Liquitex and DR inks. Do you know how to use acrylic inks on a stretched canvas to create an interesting background? How to prepare the canvas for the ink ? Thank you !
Hey Nora, I use canvas prepared with gesso, I've not tried anything else. Gesso helps prepare the canvas for most acrylic applications, then you can try adding mediums over the top to get interesting looks with your inks. Is that the sort of thing you are looking for?
Kim Dellow , thank you for the reply, yes, I m looking for a way to create a background on canvas. Canvas doesn't require framing. Do you mean adding medium before ink?
Well there are lots of things you can do, you can use the inks directly on the gessoed canvas and try some of your fave techniques from the video to add interesting looks. Or you can play around with mediums on the gessoed surface to add textures then color them with inks over the top once they are dry, if you are looking to build dimension as well. You can also add the inks to color the mediums. The world is really your oyster. I don't know if I'm helping or overwhelming you with choices?! 😂
Great question! So I've not had any problems so far. I don't know if there are any longevity issues for my watered down pieces, my older pieces still seem fine but they aren't that old. I think if you are worried or selling your work then consider using acrylic mediums to thin out your acrylics then you know they will be ok!
Oh it is lovely isn't it? What might be a factor is if you like your brushes to be very soft or a little stiffer. So this particular one is a relatively stiff brush for a mop brush. I also use the Raven ones from Jackson's Art (I've put a link to the Raven in the description) and they are a lot softer but also give fantastic coverage.

Do you need to use any kind of fixative or spray over acrylic ink?
Thanks, glad you like it. No, not usually on paper.
Thank you!
I just started using color inks on canvas (only used black or white). I like the Winsor & Newton but prefer the Liquitex for color and blending.
Thanks Pete.
Lovely helpful video! Thank you. I am eying up that wooden handles brush. Is it a Chinese calligraphy brush?
Thank you Ellei! If it is the one I am thinking of, it is most likely one of the mop brushes. Quill brushes are also good. It's been a while since I watched this video 🤣 but I do have the products listed in the description if it helps.

fun stuff, Kim.

+Anne Faint have fun playing! 😁💙
Which supplier did you use to buy your brayer from? I had a look at both suppliers but couldn't see one with a detachable head.
+Catherine Peddel I've got a couple of different ones. The ones with the small diameter are from Jackson's Art, if you go via the link in the supplies list you get to two/three sorts, it's the smaller cheaper one, 6cm wide. They use to have a 10 cm wide one with the barrel you can take out. I don't know if they have just stopped doing it or if it is just out of stock, so you could ask them. The one with the wider diameter is a Rangers brayer. Hope that helps!

Which brand acrylic inks I should buy
Can you water color with it?
Could you please tell me the beautiful paint brush your using in this video?

Can we use acrylics inks with acrylic paints on canvas
Thanks for reminding me that I have some lonely inks that I need to get out for some play time......like the string Leda...mraz

Are white inks opaque in nature?
It all depends on how it is made. You can get both transparent and opaque white inks.
