You are absolutely correct. While special effects have improved dramatically since Gunsmoke, the cast of characters in any series or motion picture will always be the deciding factor in it's success. No western series or motion picture to this day in my opinion comes even close to the great performances by these actors. May Gunsmoke live on forever.

Arness was under contract to Wayne’s production company and released him to do ‘’Gunsmoke’’ without fee or legal hassle of any kind. That’s a gentleman.
Well guys i recently learned they had falling out arness didnt do a part duke wanted in the Alamo. They never talked i believe again. Duke never forgave him. Duke spoke out for him. Jim burned him in Alamo
I still watch it every day . Festus may be the greatest western character ever to appear on the small screen , followed closely by Doc Adams . The chemistry between them was a big part of the continued success of the show. Loved the guest stars too, especially Morgan Woodward and Victor French who appeared in about 40 episodes between them . 🇺🇸👍😎
@@patriciasnyder6915 He had an excellent voice and was in the John Wayne movies Rio Grande where he played one of the Regimental Singers and a brief appearance in The Quiet Man.
I first became a fan of Gunsmoke back when it was a radio show. I had mixed feelings when I heard it would be on tv, because I had seen what they had done to the Lone Ranger. But Gunsmoke was a winner from the get go. I say, with no great exaggeration, that I learned every thing I know about right and wrong from Matt Dillon.
@@FactsVerse Did Gunsmoke ever run for 90 minutes episodes? Seems I remember some of the Westerns having a season of 90 minutes programs in the early 70's. The Virginian comes to mind, and maybe Bonanza. Just wondering.
Gary Busey did not get shot down by Matt. His character died from a cerebral hemorrhage he got from a fall trying to break a horse. That episode, 'The Busters', was the 22nd episode (of 24 episodes) of the series' 20th year. And that episode was the last one to air (as a rerun) in that 20th and final season.
@@dorothylipford6503 Yes, it's true there were episodes where Matt played only a minor role. A good example was 'Gunfighter, R.I.P.' with Darren McGavin. But Matt was seen and had a part in all 635 episodes of Gunsmoke
Yes, I grimaced when the narrator said that Gary Busey ("Harve Daley" in "The Busters") was shot down by Matt. That was the only glaring mistake in the video. Actually, the last person killed by Matt on the show was John Colicos ("Judge Flood" in "Hard Labor"). "Hard Labor" was the 20th of the 24 episodes aired in Season 20, but it was the last one filmed.
I still watch these reruns today. Every actor was just perfect for their parts. James Arness was the perfect Matt Dillon. Always loved Festus and Doc's little arguments! Of course, Amanda Blake was so beautiful and yet so feisty.
Mine also. I recently found The Rifleman on YT under Film Rise and Daniel Boone under Blaine Morgan. Didn't watch them much in my youth, because of sports mainly.
@@loneranger1536 Malarkey describes most everything going on today in my opinion then again when I look back most everything has been malarkey. Born 1951 so I'm crotchety on fart pay no attention.
Trivia: James Arness played opposite John Wayne in "Hondo" as a man Hondo despised but later came to grudgingly respect. Wayne threw his weight behind Arness becoming Matt Dillon because of the respect Arness earned on "Hondo".
Gunsmoke has been my favorite western. My second was Rifleman. Paul Richards was in many tv shows. Thank goodness James Arness was and is Marshall Dillon! I couldn't see anyone else play Matt Dillon..
I just very recently started watching Gunsmoke which usually had a number of guess stars! It's a change of pace which I like rather than watching bad bad news!
One of my favorite monster movies when I was a little kid was "The Thing From Another World". After watching countless episodes of Gunsmoke, I only recently learned that James Arness was the very cool monster in that film. He was perfect for it because of his size. Just thought I'd drop this little factoid here.
Unfortunately I haven't seen the thing yet. However , I am looking for one of the cable channels to find it or I will go A video store to see if I can find it Also Amazon or eBay. I use to watch Gun s.moke when I were very young. I miss all the actors and actresses,. ms Kitty. she' were some time funny and phrases. Su h as cow boy. She were so missed. I tho k if she were still alive she would still be on gun smoke. I like to see when her and Dillon flirt with each other.
We love gunsmoke. One of the few shows that families can watch together. Burt Reynolds and Charles Bronson got their start on gunsmoke. We still love it after all these years, and we shouldn't forget Amanda Blake who was fabulous as Miss Kitty.
In 1963 my mother and I drove from Arizona into Utah. At that time Lake Havasu was filling up. James Arness had property on the north side of the lake, but didn't have good access so he had hired one of my high school friends to bulldoze a better road. There was a small cabin on the property and Amanda Blake cooked a meal for us. They were both very cordial and down to earth.
They never said out right that they were a couple, but all of the "outlaws " referred to Kitty as his "woman"...and a few kidnapped her because of it. I'm still watching the episodes on ME TV in the afternoon 😊 They kept us in mystery..but they were a low key couple 😆
@@steveparish6435 Nope..sure didn't..but they had "dates" and Kitty got mad when he had to break them..lol I think they wanted the focus on Matt catching the criminals & not his relationships with a woman 🤷🏽♀️
James had a famous brother who was also an actor. Hailing from Alexandria, MN the Aurness brothers James and Peter Graves became popular icons of the small screen.
Very interesting history. My granddad was the prop man of Gunsmoke until he passed away from cancer in late 1971. He had started with Paladin Have Gun will Travel and switched to Gunsmoke within the year, I believe, so that must have been the third season. We heard the stories suitable for kids at the time. He and my grandmother stopped by on the way back from Hawaii (to see Hawaii Five-O being shot) to check out my new college digs, but passed away soon after. I wasn't allowed up late (10pm -11pm) to watch Gunsmoke, though, but he left us all a pewter mug with a characters' name on it. A super nice man Clem was.
There was one Gunsmoke show where Miss Kitty made a comment about people that got together after 19 years. The funny thing was that after 19 years Miss Kitty left Gunsmoke. Mostly because of her physical problems. But it was ironic, that Miss Kitty made that statement in the show early in the years of Gunsmoke, and that ended up being the length of her career in Gunsmoke.
Best television show there ever was. I started watching it when I was 4 years old. Add Bonanza and Star Trek, and you have everything needed to travel back in time to when America was the greatest nation on earth.
My Saturday morning western shows Gun Smoke Rifleman Wanted “ Dead or Alive “ Lone Ranger Then John Wayne movies would start at noon and after that we would watch Clint Eastwood western’s . What a great way to spend your Saturday’s .
Gunsmoke was before my time but I started watching it a few years ago when I caught it on TV and now I watch it regularly and own many seasons on dvd. The post series movies are excellent as well. The memorable characters, writing and storylines have made it one of my favorite shows of all time.

I'm teasing I know you meant first run which is probably true for most of us but it's always been on the air, that Gilligan's Island, The Flintstones, and Dragnet
One of the funniest things I had ever seen anywhere was in 1969 Seoul Korea. Walking past a TV store that had a TV on in the window. I stopped and watched and howled laughing at Matt and Kitty speaking Korean!
Gunsmoke tackled many of the social problems we have today way ahead of it’s time, it had a moral fiber long gone from TV today, Dillon was righteous in his law enforcement, yet subtle was his detective work at investigating what really happened, Chester and Festus, Doc, Ms Kitty ( beautiful even in black and white) were the perfect supporting cast as well as many others….

I watched Gunsmoke as a kid, and now I'm watching the reruns! I saw Miss Kitty in Memphis one time---she looked just like she did on tv. I love all the regular characters. I'm sorry kids don't watch it---Matt always treated people so kindly!! And always used common sense in working out any situation. Such a great show!! I'm glad the reruns are still on!!
@@jlb3835 Wondered how that came about. And Chester stayed in character too, I remember a scene where he was carrying 2 buckets of water and stepped up on the porch or wooden walkway. As he stepped up he kept that leg straight and kinda swung it on to the porch, all before he sat the buckets down. Wonder if he wore any apparatus to help keep leg stiff and straight?
I bought the entire series on DVD. It’s truly a great series, unchallenged by any and all. The box set is a must have. Some episodes are so good, that it repays reviewing. There is a bootleg set out there, but I’d recommend getting the official legal one. You won’t regret it.
That Arvo guy was on To Tell the Truth as the worlds quick draw champion. He trained all the Hollywood movie/tv stars in quick draw and real body language shooting a gun. He had his holster lined with metal to eliminate any friction when drawing. None of the panel guessed him and were startled when he stood up, drew his guns and shot them.
Back when people had more than two kids , it was one of the few shows when the living room filled up and the whole family were never disappointed . No nonsense law with a human touch , I always liked Festus as the Marshal 's trusty Deputy .
I have memories of my daddy watching this show on Saturdays. There weren't many options on T.V at the time but I remember it being his time for T.V. Today I watch all of the reruns that come on with my hubby. It was seriously the best 30 min show ever. Thanks for the knowledge. Blessings.
I love gunsmoke as a kid and a teenager. It came to television when I was one year old and I watched it until I was 21. But my favorite Western show was Paladin.
I saw Amanda Blake on a TV interview show once, and when she was asked about Miss Kitty, she laughed that wonderful jackass laugh of hers and declared, "She was a madam!"

I'm 77 and still watch Gunsmoke. Every scene with Matt and Miss Kitty I'm thinking "Did they get it on or not?" It seems like I read that yeah, they did but not during Gunsmoke, but during an unrelated previous series.
The stories are great, the actors were phenomenal. The chemistry between all the actors...hands down the best western on TV. James Arness.. up there with John Wayne!👍🏻👏
I ran into Arness one day in Hollywood. He was entering the grocery store I was delivering to. I was walking fast and I actually walked into him, my nose hit his chest, at 6'7" he was a foot taller than me. I was so surprised I was speechless. He laughed about it and walked past me. About his war injury, they say you never saw Dillon get on a horse because of that old wound. On the Anzio landing he was called 'the depth finder.' he was the first off the landing craft to show how deep the water was for shorter soldiers.
I remember coming home from school when I was younger and my grandpa would be sitting on the couch watching this. Every once in a while i'd sit and watch it with him. ☺
Dennis Weaver as Marshall Dillon's sidekick, Chester, often sang little tunes on the show and sometimes played guitar as he sang them. He wrote every one of those tunes himself, according to a book I read.
Dennis Weaver (Chester) went on to play the starring role in one of Steven Spielberg's first movies, "Duel," a very good suspense about a lone motorist, pursued by a diabolical big rig driver.
I've been listening to radio Gunsmoke quite often lately and I have yet to tire of these very captivating stories. The music is excellent and actually functions as part of the action and dialogue.

I was just talking yesterday about the great western programs that were on television when I was growing up in the 1960s. I can remember at least 20 television westerns but _Gunsmoke_ was the gold standard. I've always been a fan of _Gunsmoke_ but I prefer the earlier scripts that were shot in black and white. The storylines were grittier and sometimes the difference between right and wrong wasn't as obvious as it was in the later scripts from the 60s and 70s. I remember a couple of those old shows where Marshall Dillon burst into a building and gunned down everybody inside whether they were armed or not. He never would have done something like that in the later episodes. Those black and white episodes always started with big, brawny Matt Dillion standing near the town cemetery on a cold windy day as tumbleweeds blow across the graves.
I named my middle daughter Amanda after miss kitty. She was an independent hard working woman and I wanted my daughter to be too. And she is to this day.
Gunsmoke was certainly a classic. I grew up with it in the 60s. There were so many westerns on TV in those days. Rawhide, Maverick, Wagon Train, Cheyenne, Sugar Foot ,Johnny Yuma (the Rebel) etc. They made such wonderful viewing. I miss those years . Thanks for sharing. God Bless
Barbara Brown When Gunsmoke was a half hour program at 10 pm on Saturday night, my brother and I were not allowed to watch it. Our parents thought it was too violent and too real. Another fact is Milborn Stone was given a honorary degree as Dr. Of Medicine from I believe the University of Kansas for his portrayal of Doc. Adams.
I was a kid in school in the 1970s and I remember watching Gunsmoke Monday nights at 10:00 PM on channel 2 CBS. I think the last season was the best season. The two-part episode with Ben snow was excellent. So was the episode with Victor French as the sheriff who turns bad and who Matt wound up killing.
I watched it with my dad forever😊and now I watch it everyday jus for me” I have the” 50th anniversary volume 1 “🎉love it “ I’m in my 70s now and Still addicted 😊
In 1985 I managed to get technical gun coach/holster maker Arvo Ojala’s home phone number and ordered a holster from him. He was much older then and had just taught the guys in “Silverado” how to handle guns. He was a real nice guy and I asked him a lot about actors. Because I had seen the photo of him almost cheek to cheek with Marylin Monroe I asked him if she smelled good and he laughed and said she did. Thanks for posting the hilarious alternative clip where he beats Dillon to the draw. in the real one you can hear him fire first. He told me he was in the commissary at the studio in western costume and they asked him to do that quick intro scene. Later he sued the Screen Actor’s Guild to get paid for that famous scene seen every week for years.
Back in the day, I remember my father and brothers being really hooked on Gun Smoke, and they never missed an episode. Like football, my sister and I lost out, when it was time to come on. With one television in our house, we had to adapt to what the boys liked. Presently as an adult, I really don't care for Westerns....accept Gun Smoke.
Are you absolutely sure Arness appeared in every single episode? I seem to recall a short period were the episodes centered on Ken Curtis as Matt was "out of town". I know of one that Arness only rode back into town after Festus had saved Dodge, however there was at least one where Festus was out of Dodge and got caught up in a situation. Could be I just do not remember Arness putting in a "Cameo" in one scene of a show featuring Curtis.
Toward the end the series became more of an anthology centering on other characters with Matt Dillon often just making a cameo appearance. Kind of blink and you missed him.
Love this show and the cast, although I get tired of how they portrayed Kitty. Excellent series with writing that was compelling for the most part. I’m mid century and my daughter is a mid teen. She loves the Chester years, I love Festus and miss Quint’s character.

I acquired my love of westerns from my grandmother. I spent a lot of time alone with her until about age 12, when my family moved farther away from her. We used to watch Wagon Train, Bonanza, The Virginian, Laramie - my favorite -but her absolute favorite was Gunsmoke, she just loved James Arness -- when the show was about to come on shed say, "I've got to get ready for my date with Marshall Dillion!" My Grandmother died in 1985 while I was in my third year of law school. I ended up taking a job with a Washington D.C. law firm that did a lot of work that required the services of the U.S. Marshalls. In 1989 the Marshall Service celebrated its 200th-year anniversary with a very fancy dinner-dance party. The law firm bought a table to show support and I attended. To my delight, the key note speaker was none other than the most famous US Marshal on the planet -- Mr. James Arness - who was made an honorary Marshall. After the dinner and the speeches a lot of people had gathered to talk to him so I took my program over to see if I could get an autograph. He was just as handsome as ever especially dressed in a tuxedo. As i waited around I heard what other people were saying to him and most would say they were a big fan of Gunsmoke, watched it growing up, etc, etc. A was the last person in the line and he said, "You're a little young to have grown up watching Gunsmoke! I told him I had because my grandmother was a huge fan. He kind of grimaced and laughed and we had a very nice chat and a short dance! He was VERY tall and a kind and humble man. Your video brought back such a happy memory I only wish I could have shared it with my grandmother.
Oh Lord, my grandma was in love with Matt Dillion. We couldn’t breathe when Gunsmoke was on; and don’t let Matt get shot. She would grieve like it was real!

I have been watching this show since the first airing. Still watch it every night. Never gets old. I will be watching as long as I live. Thanks to all the cast for such a awesome show. Sure wish they would make some new westerns.
On cable here we have Gunsmoke for at least three episodes in the morning and again in the afternoon and night. You can just binge watch Gunsmoke here and that's okay with me
Glad to hear that you love Gunsmoke up until this day! In your opinion, which episode made an impact on you?
Arness was under contract to Wayne’s production company and released him to do ‘’Gunsmoke’’ without fee or legal hassle of any kind. That’s a gentleman.
Its called being unselfish and decent.
They were good friends.
Well guys i recently learned they had falling out arness didnt do a part duke wanted in the Alamo. They never talked i believe again. Duke never forgave him. Duke spoke out for him. Jim burned him in Alamo
I know i was suprised
@@robertayoder2063 That was disappointing to hear. Too often we throw away friendships for less important reasons
Thanks for watching!

I'm a Gunsmoke addict. Marshall Dillon has always been a hero figure to me.
Greatest western of ALL TIME.... I now watch the earlier episodes and even the early 1/2 hour episodes on the INSP network. They’re GREAT 👍

What you commented is true. And Matt didn't play a part in every Gunsmoke episodes.
@@dorothylipford6503 Yes, it's true there were episodes where Matt played only a minor role. A good example was 'Gunfighter, R.I.P.' with Darren McGavin. But Matt was seen and had a part in all 635 episodes of Gunsmoke
That's one of my favorite episodes!
I was going to pipe in with the same comment. Thanks for beating me to it.

Claude Akins also was in just about every movie
Marshal Dillon and Lucas McCain could’ve cleaned up the west All by themselves lol
Have Gun Will Travel, was also a very good western series. Richard Boone was perfect for that role.
Gunsmoke is one of the best western movies out there. We still watch it everyday.
A true fan spotted! Which episode are you now watching?
I just very recently started watching Gunsmoke which usually had a number of guess stars! It's a change of pace which I like rather than watching bad bad news!
One of my favorite monster movies when I was a little kid was "The Thing From Another World". After watching countless episodes of Gunsmoke, I only recently learned that James Arness was the very cool monster in that film. He was perfect for it because of his size. Just thought I'd drop this little factoid here.
There was a joke that he played a giant carrot because the creature was some sort of advanced form of plant life. (Think Venus Flytrap on steroids)
He was perfect in that movie. 🙋❤
We love gunsmoke. One of the few shows that families can watch together. Burt Reynolds and Charles Bronson got their start on gunsmoke. We still love it after all these years, and we shouldn't forget Amanda Blake who was fabulous as Miss Kitty.
We agree! Thank you for watching our content. Be on the lookout for our next video!
Actually Charles Bronson was in TV and movies years before Gunsmoke.
Maybe Miss Kitty and Matt were more than just friends. 🙆
Kitty was head over heels with Matt.
I don’t know what Matt was not seeing, but I’d have “responded” to Kitty’s overt overtures faster than any gunfighter could “clear leather”..
@@timothybauer1295 So true, I still don't get it, I almost got it but, hmm..

How interesting!!!!! Do you have any stories you can share? Would love to hear them!

I watched the show when I was a kid and now I'm old. I love the show and the cast. It's my favorite western.

In 1985 I managed to get technical gun coach/holster maker Arvo Ojala’s home phone number and ordered a holster from him. He was much older then and had just taught the guys in
“Silverado” how to handle guns.
I always noted he pulled the trigger first. At that time I didn't know who he was and I figured he just missed hitting Matt.
Back in the day, I remember my father and brothers being really hooked on Gun Smoke, and they never missed an episode. Like football, my sister and I lost out, when it was time to come on.

My Grandmother watched wrestling and she thought it was real, watching her was better than the show.
Loved Gun smoke, and always will!

Me too.
I would be grateful, if you could guide me to where I can find these episodes?
I remember listening to "Gunsmoke" on the radio before it was on TV, because dad listened to it. I still like the original 30 minute b&w "Gunsmoke" more than the later ones. They were much better in my opinion. And didn't have a bunch of "filler" to take up the hour time.
@@tlee51ftw I love the 30 minute b&w most of all because Miss Kitty and Matt are so beautiful and handsome when young.
I watch several episodes a week on cable. The show ended when I was a little kid, but never watched it then. In my 40s I developed a interest in old west guns, and Westerns.
