      The main thrust of the 'narrative' of some of these chit-chat shows is just sensationalised to get our attention. If the creator of this series had a better mind, and an affinity with truth, we might have seen a better show.

    I can still remember the thrill of hearing the tune of Gunsmoke signaling a joint family gathering in the living room, way too many of us not finding a place on the couch, sitting on the floor, us little ones. The series was as a friend who came to visit us..and sure James Arness and all the steadfast characters were so familliar, bringing back memories as old as half a century!! One of the greatest tv-shows of that era!!

    Arness did say he was "embarrassed" when he did the scifi classic "The Thing". But you hardly see him in that anyway. A few years later he played a very good part in another scifi classic Them! In that he plays a very sympathetic and tough FBI agent and he's outstanding, sharing the screen with James Whitmore and Edmund Gwen and more than holds his own with those 2 great actors. He even has a brief scene with a pre-Davy Crockett Fess Parker! What stands out is at the end of the scene the 6 foot 5 inch Fess actually looks UP at the 6 foot 7 inch Arness! Doubt that happened to Fess very often! LOL.

    I did read a comment from Amanda Blake in a book with quotes from stars on their co-stars. She revealed that Arness "could be a bully, wants everything his way. He's not someone I'd care to spend a lot of time with." Ouch! Not sure how accurate that quote was. All indications are that Arness and the rest of the cast got along. Arness was a staunch republican and I know Dennis Weaver was a democrat but I've read that they got along very well. And Burt Reynolds, in his last autobiography, spoke so well of Arness. Burt had a very bad experience co-starring in a western tv show with Darren McGavin, saying Darren hogged the spotlight, didn't want Burt to have any good scenes (sounds like William Shatner!). Burt wound up quitting the show. About 3 years later he got the part on Gunsmoke and he said Arness always pushed the writers to have episodes that centered around Doc, then Kitty, then Festus, and finally Quint, Burt's character. He said Arness taught him that not all "stars" of TV shows want every episode to center around them.

    • @TWS-pd5dc
      @TWS-pd5dc Місяць тому

      @@deborahturner1945 From what I've read I think he was a bully in the sense that he refused to give interviews and have reporters on the set. He was a very private person and hated publicity. The TV Guide reporter said he called Peter Graves, Arness's brother, and asked if he would talk about James. Graves was known as much more willing to grant interviews but even he said, laughing, "Sure, just have Jim call me to agree to it." The article confirmed that Arness at times would order reporters off the set. That's likely what Amanda was talking about. Even Burt Reynolds, who had only great things to say about Arness, admitted "I didn't get real close to him because he doesn't let anyone get close to him.". Reynolds was half-joking when he said it. But Burt also said Arness never played the "star" on the show and it's pretty clear the set was a happy one for the most part.

    James Arness, heavily made-up, portrayed a monster in a sci-fi movie.
    Ken Curtis is unrecognizable in retrospect as a conniving, cowardly (and ultimately eaten) character in the sci-fi movie “The Killer Shrews” (if I remember the title correctly). It also starred James Best, if that name rings a bell, and is a quite campy, yet surprisingly scary film! Every time I watch it I try to picture Ken Curtis’ role as if he was acting as Festus Hagen!!

    Did you know there was an inference made to homosexuality in a ‘Gunsmoke’ episode that first aired on November 28, 1964? A question was posed by Mat Dillon to a farmer. The context of the question, by the way, was misconstrued by the person whom Dillon asked. Nonetheless, the inference to homosexuality was as follows:
    “I’m looking for man.” - Matt Dillon
    “That makes all the difference. I’ve been looking for a woman for the past 30 years” - The farmer (farmer laughs after making quip)
    “Old-timer, this is a little different. The man I’m looking for is a killer.” - Matt Dillon
    BTW: I wonder if James Arness had Habsburg Chin, also known as the Habsburg Jaw, a condition that is characterized by an underdeveloped lower jaw with a protruding chin. 🤔

    • @iconicinside
      @iconicinside  Місяць тому

      Hey there, @christophertsiliacos8958,
      Firstly, thank you so much for leaving a l....ooong comment.
      That's a great catch about the possible inference to homosexuality in that 'Gunsmoke' episode! It's definitely intriguing how subtle hints like that could be interpreted in different ways. I'm curious to know - did you notice any other instances of such subtle allusions in classic TV shows? And what do you think about the changing landscape of representation in the media today?
      Oh, and about James Arness's chin, I've never really paid attention to it before. But now that you mention it, I can see how it contributes to his distinctive look. Do you think it's a common feature among actors from that era? Would love to hear your thoughts!

      @@iconicinside Hi there Iconic Inside. As to your question, “Did you notice any other instances of such subtle allusions in classic TV shows? Two characters come to mind: the cartoon character “Fernando the Bull,” and Jonathan Harris who played the part of Dr. Zachary Smith in the 1960s science fiction TV series “Lost in Space.” Their effeminate behaviors made me wonder about their sexual orientation.
      As to your question, “What do you think about the changing landscape of representation in the media today?” As observations from a pure sociological perspective, I’ve noticed that more and more couples on present day commercials, TV dramas and sitcoms are of the LGBTQ+ identity. And if a couple just happens to be heterosexual, 8 times out of 10, it’ll be an interracial couple. Parenthetically, if one wants to see primarily heterosexual, same race couples in TV sitcoms and drama shows, one will need to go back to the 50s, 60s and 70s.
      Lastly, regarding James Arness’ chin, I never paid that much attention to it. I figured he just had a large face for a big and tall man who stood at an imposing 6’ 7”. BTW: The Habsburg Chin was Jay Leno’s trademark, so to speak.

    Fun coincidence: In 1977 I was on an after-season picnic of sorts with my high school track and field team. One of the runners brought along an antique trunk he or his family had purchased; inside was a newspaper section used as a liner or padding for the past contents. The athlete noted that the sports section featured a write up on Peter Arness and his Minnesota state high jump record, along with a photo of the very young man who would eventually take the stage name of Peter Graves, and be well known for Mr. Phelps of Mission Impossible.
    As we had amongst us the athlete who had that very year, 1977, broken our high school high jump record at 6’1” it was interesting to note, if I recall correctly, that Arness(Graves) had jumped 6’1” for his state record! (By the way, when my classmate broke our school record, one former high school athlete was present in great pride, a high school custodian, who in 1961 had set the bar - or rather leapt over it - at 6’0”)
    The track and field coach, a science teacher who also owned an antique store and art gallery, asked if any of his assembled athletes knew that James Arness of Gunsmoke and Peter Graves of Mission Impossible were brothers. I think one of our lot was aware of this.
    I enjoyed both shows and both actors! It’s a small world for the tall and talented, the high jumping and high profile, or the rest of us!
    The characters portrayed by the Arness brothers were of adults of professional rank performing ably and with resolve no matter the costs or the conflict! Sort of like the high school track and friend coach who became my friend! Sort of like the high school custodian who became my friend! Sort of like some of the track and field team members!
    We all need role models of quiet, unwavering determination!!

    Doc was a useless character on the show and basically an oxygen thief!

      WTF are you on?😂
      Doc was part of the whole pot of Soup Dude, him and Festus irritating each other filled the gaps needed on the show..
      Watch the Episode called Wishbone.
      As far a writers one was Kathleen Hite, I noticed her stuff was a bit more human element complex.
      I would Say Thaddeus Greenwood wasn't need really.

    James Arness never hated any one his life that is wrong to say that. He liked everyone this is the kind of Man he was...

    The part of Marshall Dillion was first offered to John Wayne and he turned it down and it was Wayne who recommended Arness for the part
