John Fogerty’s main road guitar is a late-’60s or early-’70s Gibson Les Paul goldtop with a wraparound bridge and its original P-90 pickups that really punch through the mix.
Used also as much as the goldtop on the 2015 Fogerty tour, this stock late-’60s or early-’70s Gibson Les Paul Custom “Black Beauty” is in remarkably good shape, all things considered.
Made by Phil Kubicki (builder of the famous Ex Factor bass from 1983), all three versions of Fogerty’s iconic “bat guitar” feature an authentic Louisville Slugger brand and Strat-style electronics-a 5-way selector and a volume and two tone knobs-along the body’s upper edge.
When Fogerty wants the first CCR album’s vibe, he plays this custom 1997 Rickenbacker with three “toaster” pickups and a Bigsby vibrato.

John's original Rickenbacker was not stolen, he gave it away to some kid after CCR crumbled. And it was not a 360, it was 325. He just recently got it back! What a great story and happy ending!

Hi John & family, thank you for all the wonderful music over the years...when I came back from Vietnam I bought a home in Great falls, Montana just down from your grandmother's home.....in time she had to go to a care facility and my wife and I bought some things when your mom came up to settle the estate...your art form gave me hope in Vietnam...thank you....Paul Scarpelli

I love how a well used and extreme traveled 1970 Les Paul looks that good at 8:20 but other Les Pauls from the 70's can look like they baked in the sun for decades. Giving a shit about your guitar can go along way. Great vid !!

It's interesting to see Shane with a Rickenbacker that looks so similar to his dad's famous guitar that was still missing at the time. My name can be added to those who are delighted that John got his special guitar back.

One of the first lp's I had as a kid was Willy and the Poor Boys. The guitar tracks are honed into my very being and still hear them in my dreams. Great tone is never forgotten or ignored. Timeless..

In ‘69, John had a Gibson ES-175, which he used on the ‘Bayou Country’ album, stolen out of his car, not a Rickenbacker. From that point is when he found the Black Beauty Les Paul Custom and recorded such classics as Bad Moon Rising, Fortunate Son, Run Through The Jungle, etc. The Rickenbacker is a 325 Rose Morris model(imported 3/4 scale) John’s ‘ACME’ Rickenbacker 325 had a humbucker installed in the bridge position in place of the toaster pickup.

    • @grantandersen
      @grantandersen Рік тому +1

His 1st Les Paul tuned down to Open D replaced his stolen ES-175 in January 1969. Actually sometime in the spring of 1969, Fogerty actually bought another Les Paul Custom and had it modified to have the neck shortened to 3/4 scale. He put a Bigsby on that and tuned it to Standard tuning. Starting in late ‘69/early ‘70 he started retire his Rickenbacker and his 2nd
Les Paul Custom that was 3/4 scale as his main guitar.

What would have made this more fantastic than it was would have been the playing of the guitars through the electronics so we could hear what each does! I now just enough about the controllers to get shocked so I think it would have been very informative. I always thought John and others just plugged in and started playing and every now and then used a foot controller or two. This stuff is amazing and that guy that is in charge has a dream job!

Finally a musician who appreciates the P-90. Nowadays every man and his dog wet their pants over PAF pups so much that it seems like they like them because it's cool to be in that club. I have a '56 Goldtop and I love P-90s even with the 60 cycle hum which can easily be addressed by TURNING IT UP or finding that sweet spot on the stage [like we do with indoor TV aerials].

So that is not the same black Gibson that Shane uses? The guitar from his wife, is that different in sound verses the other two Gibsons? What is the guitar that he uses for Keep on Chouglin? I know it is blue. Did he also use another one shaped like that for Ramble Tamble which I know is for a burst type of color. What Rickenbacker did he use back in the day through the late 90's? Why does John not use that guitar anymore? He used it for Susie Q and I Put A Spell On You. He also used a cherry sunburst Lespaul for Up around the Bend, Rockin All Over The World and Waling in a Hurricane. Does he still use that? Does he still have that red telecaster for most of his songs. I saw a similar on UA-cam one still played in 2013 but it was kind of different for the song Train of Fools? There was a purple guitar in the 80's and early 90's. What was the brand and where is it now? What about his acoustic guitars? I think he has at least two. Sorry for all of these questions. I just wanted to check in and make sure.

Aaron Springborn He has over 300 guitars in his collection. The Blue one for "Keep On Chooglin" is an Ernie Ball Music man Axis. The Red one he sometimes plays on "Looking Out My Back Door" is an Ernie Ball Music Man John Patrucci. Lately hes been switching to Bill Crook customs because hes been teaming up with Brad Paisley. He has one red and white one from Fender custom shop its a Tele with a G bender and strat middle pick up. It has a bigger ticker body than a normal tele. He wanted a deeper snappy sound.

Oh and the acoustics he uses are mostly Taylors. He has a Gibson that he played with Keith Urban on 'Rambunctious Boy" but he likes the sound of the Taylor's. Purple one your talking about is an Ibanez.

When he's showing John Fogerty's Les Paul Custom I believe he made an error. The customs were known to be all mahogany. No maple cap. Les Paul himself actually preferred that darker, warmer tone hence why he played one. He also mentions the 50s ones were all mahogany without the maple cap. The 50's Les Paul's definitely had maple caps with the exception of Custom models and the lower Junior models. But hey, as a guitar tech he probably has a lot to keep up with and he's most likely exhausted. I'm sure he didn't mean to say what he did. My comment is mostly to keep others from being misinformed on vintage Les Paul specs.

When the Les Paul Custom Black Beauty was reintroduced in 1968 is was maple capped and sported" Witches Hat" control knobs.
