Jennifer,Esai Morales,Jimmy Smits, and Michael Dilorenzo all Puerto-Rican Actors.The movie used a Mexican family as the example, but it is really about the Latino-American experience. Most Latinos can relate to this movie. The sountrack featured not just Mexican music but Cuban mambo and Dominican Bachata (Juan Luis Gerra). Many third and fourth generation Latinos can relate to the close knit families, urban decay, strong ties to religion and even police brutality.
Everyone needs to shut up about Jennifer Lopez not being Mexican, neither is Jimmy Smits or Esai Morales or even Michael DeLorenzo. But they all share a language and a certain history, most Hispanics are mestizos which is another common factor. They're actors/actresses portraying a character, not their own lives.
I am so glad the scene where La Migra came and herded latinos up and carted off to central Mexico is included. I hope people will see and understand why we cant let anything like this happen again., be it California or Arizona!
I love JLo, and I appreciate her effort because you can tell she's trying, but her Spanish is making me roll on the floorP.S... mine ain't any better D;
@MrJalostotitlan once my dad made a big hole at the backyard to put some flowers there. i put a sign saying "Here lies El Californio, (...)" nowadays that place is still called "el californio"...
Who sings this beautiful song when she tells him shes having a baby? I gotta have this song! If anyone know the name of the song & who sings it please post it!
@ravest707 you got your facts all wrong here buddy, this is like,her first role pre selena when she was a fucking nobody. so she was selected for the film for another reason besides simply being J-lo.
i totally agree with you, I seen a interview with Jennifer, and she emphasiised she could'nt relate to alot of selena's heritage since she was "puerto rican yeah I said it Juan so yes I am pissed off but oh well, edward olmos has his favorites, Just like taratino, always has Selma Hayak play in his roles as a Mexican Huh maybe cause she is one! N-E way Just a comment!

NE way just a comment or reply
@oohrah18 thats easy because back in those days they didnt have and english or spanish option like now. back then you either learned the language or you were screwed.
En el ámbito artístico, como en todo en la vida, no siempre es quién es mejor, sino quién es más perseverante. El mundo está lleno de gente talentosa que no está dispuesta a luchar lo suficiente o le tiene miedo al rechazo...
@hjb103055 I just looked at what I wrote. That's not what I meant. I meant is are they sending the immigrants that are already LIVING here back to Mexico?
Actually, ability/talent is the entire point of my previous comment. I would not have any problems giving her props for her acting if she was doing a great job with the role. It just does not make sense to have her, with her inability to speak Spanish(the way Mexicans do, not neccesarily traditional European Spanish) as a native Mexican woman. It is a bit mind boggling. Selena was a great role for her because the real Selena had the same issues with the language that she has.
@mabm1974 In Mexico the owl is called "tecolote" and is a bird of bad luck if you see or hear. There is a very old Mexican proverb that says "When the owl sings, the indian dies" (Cuando el tecolote canta, el indio muere).
deberian leer crossing de manuel luis martinez , cuenta la historia de unos inmigrantes mexicanos que murieron afixiados en un tren al tratar de pasar la frontera
the dude that tries to get her across the river, he comes out in Jurassic Park the Lost World no? Hes the mexican guy that was friends with the one fool that got eaten by those little ass dinosaurs
I think you misunderstood my comment, Juan. I don't want to suggest that Lopez got her role because she was already famous. I think that her attractiveness had more to do with her being chosen for the role than anything else. Olmos should have gotten someone who spoke Spanish as well and naturally as the rest of the cast. No disrespect.
porque escogieron gente puertorriqueña para la pelicula? porque somos latinos e independientemente de cual sea nuestra procedencia aqui lo que tratan de llevarles a ustedes es una idea de como fue lavida en ese tiempo de los 1930....
hahahahaah.. this guy.. but honestly, i can't even talk like a paisa, it just doesn't come out natural.. i try tlkn like george lopez does but i jus can't do it.. lol
It's interesting to note that nearly half the actors in this film were cast in "Selena", as well. : - )

I love JLo, and I appreciate her effort because you can tell she's trying, but her Spanish is making me roll on the floorP.S... mine ain't any better D;

It's not our fault that jennifer lopez likes to play as a Mexican

the dude that tries to get her across the river, he comes out in Jurassic Park the Lost World no? Hes the mexican guy that was friends with the one fool that got eaten by those little ass dinosaurs
3:00 THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING TO DAY. We're taking away gringo jobs.
It's really sad to see all those Mexicans getting deported like that. It's even sadder to find out that they came back.
is it just me or does this foo look way younger than jennifer lopez, he looks like a highschool student or something and j lo looks all old haha
at least they didin't include in the casting telenovelas actors from telemundo.
@TheLonestarr55 still happened in 2011 here in georgia so sad
I regret reading the comments...-__-..
