  • One of the most requested songs in the comments section and on our live show, Metallica Creeping Death from the Ride the Lightning album. Alexis really liked that the song told the story from the perspective of one of the plagues of Egypt, creeping death.

Their brilliance at such a young age is what made them who they are. You didnt get such in-depth POV's in lyrics like this unless you had experienced musicians or a team of writers/composers. They were 20-21 years old at this time. They were the Mozart's of Metal.

Great reactions! From what i know, the story of the song has been told by James Hetfield, the vocalist. He said Cliff Burton, the late bassist, and him were watching the "Ten Commandments", the famous movie classic, when he suddenly made the comment: "Creeping Death" as the scene was portraing the death of the pharoe's son. So, that was the beginning of the writing of the song, i'd say.

It's one of those things where they go "Don't you think it's a bit on the nose" in the creative meetings.
Star Trek did the same with me a few years back. Data is the android, Lore is his duplicitous brother (also android). Then about 4 years ago I saw "Trust Data, not Lore", and I finally got the wordplay. After 30 years of fandom.

BURRRRCH!! Sorry I'm 5hrs late on upload, (work ya know?). I'm so glad you introduced Alexis to this gem. The riff to the "die, die, die" part was written by Kirk when he was 16 and was going to include it in Exodus and it was about to go on their next album before he got the call in April 1983 to replace Dave Mustaine in New York . So he brought it with him from San Francisco to NY. He learned the songs from Kill Em All on the flight over and got the gig the same exact day Dave was canned. Dave was fired in the A.M., Kirk got the job in the P.M. Obviously the riff didn't show up until the next year 1984 (RTL) since Kill Em All was already written. Can you imagine that riff on Bonded By Blood? lol Anyway, just wanted to throw that tidbit out there for the viewers. Stay Frosty dude \m/ \m/

I did not care for this song too much back in the day for some reason. I never really gave it much thought, but I became familiar with it enough that some lyrics stuck in my head, but had NO clue it had anything to do with Moses, the bible, or anything - just never paid that much attention.
Fast forward almost a decade later, when I am watching the movie The Ten Commandments on TV, and all these little things keep popping up that sounded familiar - the mention of plagues and darkness 3 days long, hail to fire, the bush of fire, blood in the Nile, and of course, the phrases "let my people go", and "so let it be written, so let it be done" - finally a light bulb goes off, and I recall where I heard it all - I race to my CD collection, pull out RTL's booklet, look over the lyrics to Creeping Death, and bam! There it is. All of it. NOW the song made sense to me, and NOW I had an appreciation for it. I really enjoyed the movie so now that there was a "soundtrack song" for it by Metallica, it was even better. Creeping Death is now my top fave Metallica song, along with their Diamondhead cover of Am I Evil.
One of these days I am gonna have to stitch together a "fan video" combining the song and scenes from the movie.

If it does, I'd like to see it.
And if it does, I wouldn't let it stop me from making my own anyway.

This song is what attracted me to Metallica, I also bought the album when it came out but never noticed the M in the lightning either, so don't feel too bad.
