Despite the value/looks/performance of the C8 Corvette and prestige of the Porsche, I think I'd still take the Supra. The Supra was my dream car when I was 9 and although this one is different from the Mk. IV, I'm just happy in this day in age, I, at age 36, can walk into a Toyota dealership, buy one at MSRP and have a full warranty. People continually rip on this for being a BMW but in all honesty, considering the automotive climate we currently live in, if Toyota hadn't paired up with BMW to make this and the Z4, would there be 1) a Supra right at this moment and 2) this "affordable"? If they HAD to pair up with a company to make a car, I'm glad it was BMW because they make some pretty good performance cars. I admit it's basically a Z4 with Toyota body but I'm ok with that. It still has a lot of after market support and looks uniquely Toyota. For that, I'm happy. There's no more RX-7, 300ZX, 3000 GT and the NSX and GT-R are way more expensive and not what they use to be. In that sense, the Supra stands on its own. The 90s was a golden age for Japanese sports cars. That's over. But at least we still have a Supra right now, regardless of its DNA.
Love this take buddy. I drive a 911 but I appreciate this car. People don’t need to put one thing down to validate or uphold another…so if someone is hating on this or BMW, who cares. The big deal with the 2021 is that they ditched the in-head exhaust manifold. They now have a genuine header with 6 runners making the engine truly different in terms of performance and potential.
The horsepower improvement isn't just a tune. The engine is definitely different compared to last year. It now has a six-port exhaust manifold; last year's model only has TWO exhaust ports.
Thank you for pointing out the obvious, mugdays! I don't understand, why the majority of auto journalists keep referring to "engine tuning tweaks", whereas the initial Supra and the US Z4 have totally different cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds. So I'm speculating that Toyota initially launched the Supra as a single spec car for the global market..
It’s also making a lot more horsepower than Toyota is initially saying. The car is making around 420-430 hp so if people are saying the Supra feels a lot quicker than what it supposed to be then that’s the reason why
The changes are the exhaust manifold. The 2020 has a two port and the 2021 has a six port, similar to what the Z4 had last year. The other big change is in the steering rack. From what I hear, as a day to day sports car you can’t tell the difference between the 20 and 21, stock for stock.
