Why does everyone think the 2jz can handle 1000hp? Stock, it cannot. The 2jz can handle 700hp reliably, any more than that and it is a ticking time bomb. 700hp these days is a daily driver, but 20 years ago when fast and the furious came out 600-700hp was a lot. When the supra turbo was released it wasn't a punch to the nose of supercars.. It was big, heavy, quick but not that fast, handled ok and was quite expensive, that's why it didn't sell well. You could get a corvette for less... The mk4 was released around the same time as the viper. The supra turbo started at $40,000 in 1994 and went up to 50k... In the mid 90's! The viper was $49,263 in 1994 and the corvette started at $36,000. Don't get me wrong I love the supra and the 2JZ but it isn't the "biggest legend of all of the legends". The supra turbo died after 4 years in the US. It enjoys the posthumous praise and lore associated with when legends die young. Kurt Cobain, Jimmy Hendrix, Supra Turbo. Is it a good car, yes. Should it get the praise it gets? Not really. The value of these cars today is absurd. Honestly, the B58 is a better engine in every way. As it should be, it's 30 years newer. But it will never get the praise the 2jz gets despite running 8's without being built because BMW built it and for some reason that is a bad thing?

@@kimbuoy1 Your very welcome man! Always happy to turn people onto good content! If you would like, and you can totally ignore this it’s perfectly fine but I figure I’d let you know how I went about it when I first found the podcast so you’d at least have the information… My recommendation would be to start from the beginning of the podcast which actually started on Issimi’s UA-cam channel which is also where someone of Jason’s videos are as he worked with them throughout the start of Covid if you didn’t already know that (more content for you in that case 😄). The first few episodes are kinda “meh” but watching those will help you understand some of the running comedic gags/jokes that are still going on three years later, then I’d suggest starting with the early episodes on Hagerty, to explain the long and short of it, the podcast is still amazing but it’s gotten a bit more messy as they have now made so many that trying to come up with good topics is a bit harder, so now it’s a bit hit or miss with some of the episodes, but the early Hagerty stuff (or Carmudgeon Show stuff if your looking it up on UA-cam) is super entertaining, and you can obviously pick and choose your way through the episodes depending on what interests you… Good luck hope you enjoy, I’ve definitely learned a lot just from listening to them. 😁❤️
I recently got into a 23 GR Supra. As someone who wanted an older model BMW as a kid, this car hits a lot of the same notes for me. The powerful Mark(Mach)5! I drive it like my old 99 Corolla except for when I don’t. One thing about that car was it hauled a lot of people around, and this one doesn’t which I don’t mind. It corners like a dream and windows down driving is a must. It being modeled on a Z4 I believe lends itself to this. The wind buffeting that I haven’t got parts for yet happens between 70-105km. I look at it as reason to drive slow on the street and fast on the highway. Same way I learned how I get in and out long term, go in backwards then roll. Getting out swing both legs and look to the trunk and slide out. Windows are down. Pop the trunk. Close the door. Open the trunk. Put a finger on the door handle roll up the windows. Close the trunk. Rate my swag lol. A lot of fun can be had at 2000 Rpm’s or less. Anything more isn’t worth the excessive extra fuel consumption. 94 should be sipped slowly. This isn’t an 89 engine yet at 3400km. Maybe after the first oil change in 10k km, but not before. I’m glad I got the automatic and how chill it is to just listen to it drive so effortlessly. Or make a game of not using the brakes or minimizing it. Truly a drivers machine. Thank You Gazoo Racing!
@@codyC423 MK5 looks good (I have looked past the fake vents), but the interior is acceptable, but a bit meh when I sat in it at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. And many tuners have developed decent tuning solutions already to the MK5 (both 2.0 and 3.0). For example, Max Orido's own lightly tuned MK5 (Project mu brakes, CPM chassis reinforcements, HKS Hipermax suspensions, HKS exhausts), as well as the works from tuners like Revolution and Boss. Never had the slightest interest in the Z4 though. It's not an M product, so it does not feature any of the sports tuning (The entry level 2.0 version even has an open diff lmao...). It looks way angrier than its performance. There is very little gratuity in the Z4.
The amount of effort put into this single video is mind boggling. So much information, nitty gritties, and heritage from each sports car brand. It's absolutely amazing to see.

I find it funny that all it took for the b58 tuning scene to explode is a nameplate. Sure before the mk5 came about there is an aftermarket scene for the b58. But after the mk5 came out, next thing you know, there's built motors for drag & pro drifting, 1/4 mile times for the platform dropped, & suddenly more aftermarket brand names have taken to it. Hell HKS took up r&d for the mk5 so they can expand into tuning BMW products as a whole. It's nuts.
I've seen your videos Albon, I know you are an A90 supporter. Jason pins a heavily modified Mk4 against a stock Mk5. I fair comparison would need to include at least a tuned Mk5 on ethanol through Ecutek (Botti or Marintuned) or something to that effect. Running 10's on tune only with my A90, the aftermarket potential goes grossly under appreciated for the MK5. What do you think?
@@monicajarvina1962 I'll say. Give it a few more years. Once the aftermarket starts seeing the B58 being swapped into other cars and we see more with both built B58s and billet block B58s and whatever toyo does with it in its later years it'll blow up just like the GTR did and people will 180 on what they thought about the mk5 Other than the BMW criticism probably not calming down but still. Either way people say they should've made it themselves or should've used this or that platform from lexus(even tho that makes zero sense when we've had these lexuses around for years mainly them saying it should've been based on the RC or LC even tho they've been around for years and people barely doing anything close to what people are doing with the current. They are not bad cars its just people seem to not try to do anything with them)even tho people should've just been using those cars from the get go without the supra sharing anything from them will probably still stand in some peoples opinion till the car ends production(sorry for the paragraph). I'll just say yea the cars a BMW but tbh not a single modern toyo is used or modified anywhere close to the mk5 other than the GT86 and that's a Subaru so saying it being a BMW isn't a bad thing when it has people using it for what it's built for even when the toyo community itself uses the mk4 in most conversations it's pretty rare they ever bring in any of the modern platforms like the RCF or ISF in these kind of conversations about the mk5 and what people have done with them vs the mk5.
@@carboydorifutoparty3976 I heavily agree. People seem to have forgotten that the Supra had hilarious amount of understeer due to the 2JZ weighing over 650 LBS! If that's not enough, than notice that at this video, a bone stock Mk5 pulled away from a 1000 horsepower MK4 off the line. People keep saying that this is not the point of the Supra when I mention pretty much every flaw of the car, but as a new car guy, I fail to understand what IS the point of the Supra mk4. For me, it was a cheaper and more economical BMW E46 3 series (not the M3). Fun to drive, but not necessarily the monster that it sadly has become. The new Supra has all that, BUT BETTER. They removed the mk4's biggest weakness (mostly) and turned the Supra into a fun grand tourer that you can still tune to absurdity because Supra

As an owner of both the MKIV and the MKV (Somehow the MKIV Turbo was my first car when I was 16, which I still have in 2000) I belive it's totally unfair to compare the M2 CS to the Supra MKV or the BMw Z4. Reason being is that the CS in M2 is the last iteration of the M2 and it's borrowing parts from the M4 F82/83 (inclusing that 444 HP motor) which has ended to make way for the G82/83. And thus the M2 CS has the best motor it can recieve along with other bits and pieces. If BMW does their BMW things and the rumors are true, we can expect a MKV Supra with a s58 motor in it's final production year and that version will probably trump the BMW M2 CS. Long Story Short: It's unfair to compare a car in it's final itteration to another car in it's first itteration, especially if both of them are BMW's because again BMW has a history of doing this to their cars throughout their lifecycles in fact we're already seeing it with the difference in the MKV supra from 2019 to 2020, so we can probably expect more of the same as we go further in time. If he even states this at 5:45 that it's in it's final varriant. Not to mention that the price difference between the two is at least 20k if not more. This 20k difference is nothing to sneeze at if any of you can spend 20k and not blink an eye more power to you, I am not one of those people sadly... Updated: 03/10/22 Alot of things about this video did not age well including now there is heavy speculation that a Manual MKV Supra is in the works for release and that the BMW Hyrdrogen (Toyota Technology) that Jason refers to in this video is having a production number of under 100. Under 100 of these for the entire world, suffice to say I think they made more then 100 Supra MKV or BMW Supra's (Whatever you want to call it) Regardless many aspects of this video have not aged well across the single year*
Absolutely superb work. Again. Storytelling, production, sound design, the incomparable humour of Jason Camisa, all the crew, thanks for sharing what journalism should be today in all áreas of expertise, complete!
Such fantastic work and I agree, mostly. The MK4 may have been a "supercar slayer" in terms of modifiability but we all know it was really competing against the 300ZX, RX7, skyline, and of course the porky 3000GT. Of those cars the RX7 was the handler, the skyline had the racing pedigree and the Supra was really more of the GT car, evidenced by its enormous price. The car had the quality to back it up but $45k for a "sports car" in 1993 was BIG coin and I reckon the car was likely received similarly to the Lexus LC500 is today. There is one thing the M2 can't match the MK4 on, and that is the glorious sounds from that exhaust, OMG the 2JZ truly is legendary.
This is a fantastic video. Jason’s point at the end is spot on. The new GT-R was received well because it DID carry on the GT-R legacy, beating up on supercars at the time for half the price.
Jason, I cannot get over how great the quality if this work is. Hagerty is lucky to have you, and the videos you are able to produce with their resources are amazing. Thanks for making my day just that much better, every single time you produce a video or even just make an instagram post. Cheers,
14:04 I'm gonna have to stop you there. The last time Toyota developed a sports car it was the MR2 Spyder, which is a very underrated, hilariously fun to drive car. They also didn't sell that many though.
@@JB-sv5pr Hardtops are easy enough to find for them. I have an aw11 mr2, I love the car but I do think they could have easily given them more power. The 90s turbo mr2 is the only one I feel ever got the power it deserved.

That ending statement about the M2... I agree whole heartedly. I've never thought the new supra should be called a supra. It's an amazing car... Just, not a supra. But, if they could give it the ol' M2 treatment, it could lean me a bit more towards making it a rightful successor. And, yes, I am 6 months late. I don't care.

What he's saying is that despite it being collabed it reached the 8s in such a short time and with such a limited aftermarket that it shouldn't really matter that its collabed if its able to do that with being out for such a short time. In any case despite what the community thinks its a good car regardless of who built what.
What happened to the Toyota Supra with Lotus Designed undercarriage sold in the UK. It apparently drove like it was on rails and had an amazing engine management system? It disappeared to be replaced by lots of Lexus projects.
@hagerty - This video genuinely stands head and shoulders over content by subscription services and even automotive content on terrestrial TV such as the BBC...
2JZs need pistons and head work at minimum to do 1000hp. All these dyno queens have folks thinking the 2JZ is something it’s not.

The first few episodes are kinda “meh” but watching those will help you understand some of the running comedic gags/jokes that are still going on three years later, then I’d suggest starting with the early episodes on Hagerty, to explain the long and short of it, the podcast is still amazing but it’s gotten a bit more messy as they have now made so many that trying to come up with good topics is a bit harder, so now it’s a bit hit or miss with some of the episodes, but the early Hagerty stuff (or Carmudgeon Show stuff if your looking it up on UA-cam) is super entertaining, and you can obviously pick and choose your way through the episodes depending on what interests you…
Good luck hope you enjoy, I’ve definitely learned a lot just from listening to them.
