My granny had thrown two of her 12 orchids in the bin in January. I was only able so save one sadly but now it has grown two massive leaves and is going to flower soon thanks to your videos. I am so happy and excited!
I've only been growing orchids (phalaenopsis) for about 7 years. I usually buy those that are reduced price for whatever reason. I only found your site earlier this year and your videos have been VERY helpful in revitalizing my less-than-perfect purchases. Keep up the good work!
Danny, I have been watching your videos for over a year now… You are awesome! I appreciate how everything you say is based on research and experience rather than myths or “passed-down” information. Your explanations are always clear and to the point. You are a wealth of knowledge… thx for all ur videos, my orchids are much healthier thx to u. You rock, Miss Orchid Girl!
Uncommon opinion, I like aerial roots more than flower spikes. I just find the weirdness and otherness of the aerial roots so much more cooler than flower spikes imo.
Mr Taku agreed!!! They make the plant look creepy and alien 👽 pair them with a really weird looking flower, and you have a little piece of a different world sitting on your desk.
Yes! When I go orchid shopping, I don't even make most of my decisions based on how much I like the flowers of the orchid 😂 i just assume I'm going to spend 90% of its life looking at the roots and the leaves anyway (I'm a relatively new grower and I haven't gotten the hang of things yet) and I just drool over healthy roots now😂
I agree. I love 'wildness' in all sorts of things. Not for me the perfect, clipped, polished look. They look more natural with the aerial roots. But, each to their own
I love your videos and your transparency on everything from your sponsorships to the things you share from your personal life. Your channel is therapy for me. ❤️
So unfortunately my orchid (phalaenopsis) suffered root rot 😭 all I have left are aerial roots so hoping she can survive 🤞 your channel has been amazing for educating me on orchid care, so thank you! I probably would have gotten rid of my orchid if i hadn't have found your channel!
I love your video. As a new upstart youtuber I can appreciate how long it take to edit and post a garden segment. I never realized how time consuming it is and how you watch with anticipation daily for that new subscriber . By the way you have a new one today...ME...THE GARDEN NOOB
I pot my phals in orchid pots; I find that the aerial roots are water-seeking. The tips have a way of growing out of the pot and then sneaking back into one of the holes in the side of the pots.
What a nice, excellent informative video, done in such a way to make it easy to understand. You have great depth of knowledge and a knack for explaining everything very well. Your explanations are so well thought out, you tie it all together! Thank you, Thank you!
Love your open sharing of information. I have been winging it with my orchids for years. I find oncidiums like me best. You have given me the confidence to try and repot my 6 year old chocolate scented oncidium that has over 50 roots coming out of the pot way over due to repot just scared I will mess up and loose her.
Perfect timing on this video! I recently repotted an orchid who had lost pretty much all her roots, so I did try to put her aerial roots in the medium to anchor her while the other roots grew back. Maybe it wasn’t the beat idea based on the info in this video, we shall see how she does. Thanks!!
J B it should be ok. If i cut my phals, i put some of the aerial roots inside the pot. She will stabelize herself with them and create now ones. I do it for years and years now. Works pretty good.
Thanks are all this good info. I have been coddling an orchid that I thought I would lose, but there are a lot of aerial roots as opposed to roots from underneath the orchid. By accident one of those aerial roots broke in half and I thought what the heck I'm stick it in the medium and in a week there were more aerial roots and a new leaf forming!!! I was surprised.
I live Miss Orchid Girl and Repot Me. Thank you for these instructional, informative videos for us. I have learned so much, and I am quickly becoming an enthusiast. I started this journey with my grocery store orchids because I hated throwing them out after they bloomed. They are healthy and reblooming. This info on aerial roots would have been extremely helpful when I first repotted my orchids and didn’t know what to do with the aerial roots. Now I know. Maybe you could add this info to the repotting video.
I came across this video just in time🙌🏾 Here I thought my orchid roots were growing bonkers outside its container to plan an attack 😅 They do look creepy 👀
I love the way you explain not only how but why to do (or do not do) certain things in your videos. Question: I have orchids with many aerial roots. I want to repot. But I am afraid it will break them. Do I thoroughly soak them first to make them more flexible, or what? Thanks!
A friend gave me an orchid in flower two years ago. It went quite sickly but I learned to use potato water occasionally and the orchid turned very healthy and flowered for a few months. Now it's got long aerial roots and a stem filled with new flower buds. I've ordered some orchid compost and a larger pot. I'll have to give it a dedicated table but not sure how to manage the aerial roots to encourage bigger growth.
I'm 46 consider myself a bit of a green thumb. I have not had the best track record with orchids. That is until the one I bought myself from Aldi last year. I really have not done much to it other than cut the flower after bloom was spent. A full year later it's growing a new bloom with many air roots. I'm in total shock.
My partner gave me an orchid for valentine's day last year. I actually kept it alive, had it floer a second time and we recently reported it. Mine has one of these roots now and it is getting more leaves.
Really surprised 'orchid pots' aren't tilted. ...seems like the entire 'plant potting' industry believes only in vertical pots. ((Did see a few tilted...but I'd be looking for one to hang up.)) oh well...time to MacGyver something up. - Kind of tired of the plant-holding pot falling out of the main pot (used for hanging) because the flower stem(s) get laden with flowers. ((It's never fallen out, but it has tried to sneak a date with Gravity during watering in the sink!))
Hello, thank you very much!! Your videos are so interesting and eye opening! Just what I need. I am wondering... Why do I see black aerial roots? My orchid has aerial roots but some of them are very dark brown (black almost) above the pot. Still, they are functional and they become green as they come outside the pot. (I noticed that they started to change colour several months ago) Also, I recently repotted my orchid and it seems I got confused and left more "aerial" roots... Now I spray them every other day, but it seems I'm losing them... (One of them became wrinkled and brown). What should I do?? Thanks a lot for your time.

Hello! Great video as always! :) Could you please tell me at 1:47 what type of wood that is the orchid is attached too? It's beautiful! Do you sell this or know where to find it? Thanks! Keep up the good videos!
Hello. Thank you for all your helpful videos. I need to know, specifically, why my aerial roots are drying up & withering. Which video can I find this info in? T.Y. 2-5-2022

If 1-2 inches of root from the tip is dead and the rest is green, can I cut the dead part off? And do I cut into the green or stay a little below it? This is on a oncidium.
Oncidium has such fine roots try to check if the root feels easy to 'peel' and leaving the string behind, that means it's dead. Try never to cut into green flesh a lot of pathogens and bacteria can get through it inside orchid.

@Donto G it's indoors, I feed it once a month and water close to every 2 weeks. She's in an area where she's warm but no intense sun. I'm just worried that when I repotted it, it could've been too much for it since I had to cut off the flower spikes too. I know orchids are tough to Crack! Lol
@Donto G hmm I live in Southern California so it's super dry and that's why I keep it inside. I have it in a pot meant for orchinds, it's ceramic and has lots of holes in it. I'm scared of over watering for the same reason though since I don't have a plastic container for it anymore. I also put it in media specifically for orchids and it's been in the same spot since I brought it home. From what you've said though it may not be getting enough water. I've over watered succulents so which is why I try not to water my orchids too much. You've been so helpful! Thank you 😊
@Donto G it's my first one that had finished its blooming cycle so this is all uncharted territory for me 😄 i will definitely give it some more water. I'll get back to you in a month! 🤗 thanks again!
I like very much your tutorials. I have aerial roots that part of them look light brown shrunk and dry. I am not sure they live anymore. Can I cut them? I saw such also on your Orchids but you never referred to them. Please inform whether to leave them as is, or cut them. There are other, very good- looking aerial roots besides them.
Hi, if they are dry and not aluve anymore, you can cut them. Check by wetting them, if they don't green up and plump then they are not alive and can be cut :)
Hi Danni. I have a question about phal aerial roots. Mine has been growing like a weed all summer, it now looks like a porcupine with roots everywhere along the stem and between the leaves. My question is, do the roots between the leaves use up the growing nodes and stop flower spikes growing in There? I worry because it is the only phal without a spike yet. I Love your videos, thank you for them
I've had such an orchid this year, she suddenly felt happy with new place and medium and started to produce a lot of roots. One root grow in between the leaves than she produced two spikes. One was fine but second one had little space and started to grow from under the root. It had hard way to grow but with time it bend very strange (I thought it was root then). Just leave it alone and it will find it's way toward the sun. Mine broke because I was to curious 🙃 observe your orchid but she should be perfectly fine:)
My orchids aerial root has growth through the arm of a shiva statue I have and latched onto her boob. 😂 it’s sending another one a bit more south but not sure where it’s going 🫣 I think it’s in love 🥰
I've had my orchid for about 3yrs, we purchased already grown. It's a smaller one, and has reflowered 4 or 5 times. One time it had two flowering stems at the same time and was really nice looking. The problem is I have about 14 aerial roots some small, some 4 or 5 inches.. growing all on one side.. Seems to be the side closest to the sun as the window faces west. These take away from its aesthetic value, and make it look alien like.. what is the reason for so many? And what can I do? I water it once or twice a week, so the main roots get plenty of water. It currently just bloomed all of its new flowers about two weeks ago.
Is that medium on the ceramic bark (comes after the fenced pot toward end). The dark part that had air roots going in every direction seemingly coming from that dark part? How did you do that? It doesn't look like green submerged root, it liked like bark or something dark medium attached to tree. Aren't the roots either green, yellow when dieing and whitish air roots? thank you
Oh no!!! Was the root dying or was it healthy? If it’s green and looks healthy you should never cut it off. The roots sucks up water or whatever humidity is in the air.

the aerial roots ALWAYS grow in the direction most inconvenient for the grower - just to annoy, poke, trip & otherwise irritate their human slaves

Thank you, I will try to be patient and not poke it too much :)
@@annakuc771 Thanks for sharing. It was very helpful. I have same thing happening.
So what happens if you cut them off?
They die. Just leave them be especially if they are healthy and thriving
My orchids aerial root has growth through the arm of a shiva statue I have and latched onto her boob. 😂 it’s sending another one a bit more south but not sure where it’s going 🫣 I think it’s in love 🥰
My aphrodite phalaenopsis has none :0

What kind of mister do you use in this video?
Hi, I have one listed in my amazon store in description, it's not the same brand, but it looks identical 😉
Is that medium on the ceramic bark (comes after the fenced pot toward end). The dark part that had air roots going in every direction seemingly coming from that dark part? How did you do that? It doesn't look like green submerged root, it liked like bark or something dark medium attached to tree. Aren't the roots either green, yellow when dieing and whitish air roots? thank you
Boo! I just killed my Dark purple Orchid buy cutting roots ... advised by another site! I'm depressed!!
Oh no!!! Was the root dying or was it healthy? If it’s green and looks healthy you should never cut it off. The roots sucks up water or whatever humidity is in the air.
I don't like the (messy) appearance of 'arial' roots and grow them all within the rootball - planted in the Japanese Mounding style.
make that 'aerial' - darn spellcheck....
Oops...guess I shouldn’t have shoved that root into my orchids pot 😑
