I was given an Orchid for Mother's Day and it is beautiful. I did repot it right away it was sopping wet and packed tight with peat moss. It now has open 10 additional blooms since then. I have lots of houseplants and this was my first Orchid and I love it.
I have always looked at the roots before purchasing because here orchids are more expensive. But I can say I have struggled more with problems that have cropped up, like spots on the leaves and one type of orchid had stem rot that died so quickly. I have just had a keiki I removed that had not enough roots but it's officially grown roots so I'm happy
Hello Erika, thanks for sharing this video. It helped me. I had the same problem with an Orchid from Ikea. Now I know what to do the next time. Greetings from Switzerland. Manuela
At Last, Pure Joy to see you Erika... My experience with this Orchid is that they enjoy bio-char / charcoal for a potting mix... Spray daily in Summer multiple times and keep in as high humidity as possible/
Erica: loved this video! ❤️ Been through the same with some of my orchids. Have to work on the layering more effectively. Orchids definitely require patience for the long haul. Aloha! 🪴
Orchids are amazingly resilient! The fact that yours is blooming in spite of it's roots is evidence that they can keep on going. Curious about what does it look like now?😊😊
Hey Erika, I think a tip that would help is that you should always finish with a layer of bark. I know it seems like the new roots will have a hard time finding their way down Into the moss but it helps keep moisture in the pot for an extra 2-4 days! And I’m my opinion it is a bit more aesthetically pleasing. Love the work
I just watched missOrchidGirls video where I think she said the reason to adding orchid bark on top of spagnum moss was to stop the moss forming algae on the top (since it need light to form) though bark does indeed look nicer than moss on the top 😃
In my opinion orchid bark on its own is not good for orchids, the store bought stuff can be too fine and really is more like potting mix with some chunks and it stays too wet and compact and doesn't allow enough airflow. It's good stuff but you really need to amend it with large chunky bark like pine or fir bark chips and perlite. I also never use sphagnum moss, I've found my orchids almost always get root rot when I use that even a small amount it acts like a sponge and holds too much water directly against the roots. It's much better to use just chunky bark and perlite, the water needs to run through the pot as if its empty and then dry out within a day or so.
Yes I think I have 2 in only bark! Tbh I really like it, but it dries faster than the moss/bark mixture. It depends on your watering habits & environment. If you tend to overwater, bark could be a good solution. Also if you wanna save money & just use bark go for it. I do like the mix better though bc I am an under waterer
Girl, you should soak that orchid in half and half solution of hydrogen peroxide and get rid of that black moldy looking coloring or else it's just going to continue to permeate the roots that are left. And that solution you should be ready to repot the next day without any further problems.
Your video was wonderful. I have always heard that orchids are so delicate and I had no idea you could pick away to the Bare Bones like you did... I definitely am getting rid of some brown and mushy roots and there were two somewhat healthy routes that I actually thought were new stems because they were heading upward but now I realize they should have gone down into the bark and moss. Going to get some new bark and Moss and wondering if I could use any old bark or does it have to be special orchid bark? You have been incredibly helpful and hopefully my plant will live and I would love to see updates on your little project here I subscribed thanks again
I added a comment but I don't see it so perhaps I didn't hit send but anyway this was super helpful I had no idea that orchids could be picked down to the Bare Bones like you did I thought they were so sensitive that I shouldn't ever do that but I'm so glad you showed me how. Do you have to use bark that is specialized bark or can it be any bark? Also I had a couple roots that I thought were going to become new stems so they were heading upward and I allowed them to but now I realize they were routes and they should be going downward. How do you know when something is a stem? I know that sounds like a silly question but I'm a real beginner
Hello! I had a similar situation with an orcid recently. Its my first time caring for an orchid and based on what you described, it seems I over cut the roots. They were pretty rotted with a few having some green spots, but because the tops of the roots close to the plant were in bad shape I cut those off too. So now my orchid has no roots on the bottom, but there are two healthy new roots that appear to be growing, plus the leaves seem to be healthy and hydrated. The roots are above the moss growing sideways and there are no roots in the moss, but I am keeping the plant in a ziplock bag to maintain humidity. Do you think this orchid will be okay long term? Is it okay that the new roots are not growing into the moss?
Also the orchids that come mounted do you leave it mounted cuz i got mine few days ago and they are soo stinky cute also i think it need more moss because were they are mounted only have a little of roots
I'm always tempted to try my hand at orchids because of you! My mom loves them but sadly they always die but this is really helpful!! Different plant question: can u do a variegated string of hearts update! 💜🌱💜🌱💜
@@ViolentRainbow right!!! I got really into peperomias cus of her earlier videos, and I also got myself a siltepicana which has grown for me so nice! But now I wanna give orchids a shot and see 🤣
Yes try one out! Find one on clearance that has healthy roots or try saving one of your moms orchids. They are much easier than expected. I can do an update it’s not gonna be good tho 😫
@@ErikaLodes aaah thank you!!! I should cus I really like the ones that have different leaves!! The ones that have like spots or streaks, and the blooms too. Ooooh ok, well it's experience gained through practice 💚💚💚💚
The same thing happened to my orchid and I did the same exact thing. Did it make your room smell funky? I repotted mine a few weeks ago and it still smells!
Bonne chance,🤞

Wow it sounds like it’s absolutely thriving 😍
How wonderful!
Is there an update video? 😊
Best video for reviving orchids that APPARENTLY LOOK GOOD!
Good luck, little plant! Grow strong!
🥹🌸
You have so much discipline! There is no way i could have cut those flowers off 😭
It was extremely sad 🥺 they will bloom again next year …I hope lol
Put them in a vase!!!

I usually check the roots but this one just blinded me w it’s beauty 😫 so excited for your keiki!!!
Hello Erika, thanks for sharing this video. It helped me. I had the same problem with an Orchid from Ikea. Now I know what to do the next time. Greetings from Switzerland. Manuela
You should do an orchid collection video so we can see all the orchids in your collection.
Yes! I have one on the way 😊

Those flowers are so beautiful!
Wow this is super helpful my mother always gives me her Orchids with root rot so this is so helpful:)
Lol yes mine does too 😂
My mother's orchids are more prone to die from dehydration 🤣 She's a chronic not-waterer. Somehow though, her orchids are doing amazingly. No clue why
Thank you for the information. I'm trying to keep my orchids alive.
Updates ? :)
Music is very relaxing , thank you 🫰🏼
I love all your videos!

Why would you want to make sure that there's not a ton of air pockets? That's what's going to keep your orchid alive!

It is 100% prettier!! I don’t mind watering more often but when I see new roots coming in I’ll put the top layer on

My friend, thank you for good sharing
Do you have any phalanopsis planted in purely orchid bark instead of moss and barks? Is there a difference and which do you recommend?

You need clear pots with slits on the side too, for more air flow...
Thank you dear I'm still here 👍😘
Hi, thanks for sharing! When did you water the beaut after repotting?
Super informative, thanks for sharing 💚❤💚❤

I was thinking the same. Also, while I hate wasting moss - I think that stuff should’ve been, at least, sterilized before reusing or just thrown out.
I agree 💯. How'd it do though?

Can you make a video about making them bloom again? I am having a hard time re-blooming mine☹️
The way they stake the flowers up omg
Tbh I scooted them down bc they didn’t fit under the shelf I wanted 😅

Yes I leave them mounted
If you water it more often you won’t have to put more moss
I’ve seen many videos; it better to have it mounted bc this type of plant grow on tree truck in the Wild tropical forest.
Not the flowers 😢 hopefully they’ll grow back soon
Yes fingers crossed !

Can an orchid service if it only has bare roots?
Great video!
Thank you ☺️

I also bought the same one n i noticed the roots are rotten

I though that bark are more important not the moss
You can take it back and get your money back or if you want to keep they will refund and give you discount.
