  • How to use OTC 5789-520 Tire Hammer. Very well made and has a good feel as far as balance. I like the warranty! If I break it, they give me a new one... Always aim a few inches above the wheel with the wedge hammer and it will slide in to place breaking the tire down.

I bought one months ago and was intimidated by the situation and wrecking some rims. Well I got one right after lube ,I really want to thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Blessings and more blessings to you and your family

I found out about 3" angle iron, round off the edges place V side that's rounded against tire rim and tire tap and then hit a couple of wacks 😂 no problem broken bead 😊😊😊😊

No it doesn't hurt the rim. When you use a tire hammer try it on and old tire and wheel so you can get your aim down like in the video. Aim high and the lube will slide the bill of the tire hammer in place breaking the bead. Like in the video.

Was thinking about using a pick axe with a large amount of duct tape on the flat side to do this same thing, just gotta be careful to not damage the rims

The bead breaking hammer thick wide blade pushes the bead down when you drive the wedge into the bead. A thin blade goes in easier but doesn't push the bead down. A pick axle is not really made for this job and may cost you a tire.

looks like it would take practice to do this without damaging something

    • @michaelwhite2750
      @michaelwhite2750  7 років тому +1

Yes it does take some practice but if you aim above the wheel about 2 inches and use tire lube it will slide in under the lip and brake the tire bead down. The hammer has a good feel it inter better control when using the bead breaker hammer.

If you use a good tire soap so the wedge will slide under the lip and break the bead. Soap is the key thing here and some practice!

My aim isn't that good. I would hit the rim for sure. What about placing the hammer where it belongs and using a baby sledge to hit it?

This the way I was show how to use this wedge hammer. If you like using two hammer then by all means use two hammer .Safety First. This work better for me and one less tool to pack around.

Never strike two hammers together! They have hardened faces and one will eventually chip/shatter. You may get away with it 100 times before it happens, then a bad day at the eye doctor. If you're lucky like me, they can drill it out and you won't lose your vision. With your head in a clamp, you get to watch the drill dig out the piece of steel from your eye. It's still like a bad episode of the X-files.

Does this damage the rim? It looks like there might be some force striking the rim as you use the tire hammer.

need to show some control and test with a lighter swing and increase as needed.

You need to practice on a older rim because I destroyed two rims
Mainly scratches but noticeable. Lube soapy lube is your friend

Yes, and can break most wheels from a lawn mower tire up to large tractor tires wheels. Most ATV tires wheel have bead lock wheel and are very hard to break down and may need two hammer to break them down off the bead.

I look at the bead breaker hammer and to me at least, you're using it wrong. The round end, I believe, is there to hit with another smaller (5 lb) sledge hammer. You preposition the curved end under the rim and hit the round end with another hammer. Much of your swinging of the bead breaker is not down, but deflected by the tire to a little more toward a horizontal force into the rim. At least give it a try and let me know how it works. I'm not that accurate as swinging that tool like an axe.

If you have a tool call a hammer with a 20"or 30"handle I use it by itself. You don't drive a nail with 2 hammer, just one. But other tire tool company said to use there bead breaker hammer with a HD rubber hammer on their bead breaking hammer. To each there own what ever works best for you. This way work the best with this bead breaker hammer. Thank you for your comments.

I alway had a good aim with one hammer, but if two hammer work better for you then you would still get the same result of a bead broke down.
