I am more into death metal, but yes, I really like nightwish, requires a deep analysis to great composition, out of the normal. We shouldn’t review the nightwish as if they were a extreme metal, they use elements of metal as the symphony ones, so.. nightwish more than metal is a band of great music. Great review is objective and direct, hope for more reviews or reactions

Great review dude! Pretty much on point regarding how I felt about this album after listening to it 3 times (after 3 listens, that's when I give my initial review/rating). I think 'Yesterwynde' is the best Nightwish album featuring Floor Jansen. I honestly enjoy 'Dark Passion Play' and 'Imaginaerum', 'Oceanborn' and 'Once' more. Largely because the core sound (guitars, drums) stands out a bit more and there's more expression to those instruments (in my opinion). However, Nightwish's evolution in sound is interesting. Each era of Nightwish has a good amount of music to offer and never sounds one in the same. As far as symphonic metal goes, EPICA is my favorite because they explore heavier territories (some good death metal growls contrasting beautifully with Simone's amazing clean and operatic vocals) allowing more breathing room for the guitars and drums. The orchestral arrangements in Epica's music to me are more balanced (not so over the top) where often times is more supportive than it is upfront. Anyway, it's nice to expand the music pallette checking out other styles of metal. Great review man!
@@klinkklankradio thanks man, I’m always open to listen to stuff outside my wheel house , I think I would agree this is best album with Floor on vocals , but as mentioned in review , I wish there was more focus on guitar riffs and drums , as they get over shadowed by keys and synths and other layers, but I guess that’s what symphonic metal is . In small doses I rest enjoy this music , but not something. Can listen to frequently, I dig Epica as well, they are more in the heavier side . To see Nightwish live would be quite the experience definitely a bucket list band I’ve never seen, cheers 🤘🏻
@@metalmusicmeltdown absolutely 💯 the guitarwork is not as exciting on the albums with Floor. I'm kinda biased when it comes to guitarwork, but I do enjoy every Nightwish album for what each of them are. And I would love to see Nightwish and Epica live one day. Cheers!
@metalmusicmeltdown I think of symphonic metal as a fusion genre, not as a subgenre of metal. Fundamentally I don't think of it as a core band accompanied by an orchestra and choir (or just keyboards samples of such). If you're gonna invite a 100-piece symphony ensemble into the music, then I want a fully integrated sound and composition, not just a "Metallica's S&M" type of flash over substance. In classical and film music, intros/interludes/movements are naturally essential and dynamics are weaved onto the full spectrum of pianisimo to fortisimo, so the "full-on metal mode" can only have the space proportionally. There are moments for the guitar/bass/drums to shine (bass and drums in particular are heavier than ever since Wintersun's Jukka and Kai joined), just not throughout the songs, so I understand for an avid metalhead it's "not enough dose of the spice". I love many subgenres of metal from black to death to funeral doom. I settle into a different frame of mind for symphonic and progressive music; I appreciate and long for an ever-changing kaleidoscope of colors and moods instead of a monomaniacal dive into the trenches.
@@klinkklankradiowell naturally, since NW guitar parts are written on the keyboard by the keyboardist, a guitarist's touch is absent in the songwriting and composition. Not that there ever was much of a guitarist's touch on older albums, maybe part of 1-2 songs per album from Marco, but they're often the "least metal" songs anyway.
@@ImmortalDecember well said dude. That's why I said even though NW doesn't have more aggressive/technical guitarwork, the final product suits the music well. These last 3 albums represent the more traditional symphonic metal elements being fused together in a balanced way (which is fine). The Floor Jansen records were major challenges to master/mix/produce given the fact that they recruited a very large organic orchestra with many moving parts and sonic textures. Making sure the core band members are not drowned out in the mix must be a difficult task. I prefer Epica over NW because in my honest opinion, they not only have great music from the core band, the orchestral arrangements still sound epic (no pun intended). Yes, NW have evolved in a more interesting way than Epica, but Epica too has had an evolution, yet still hold strongly to their core band roots, which is not easy to do. I appreciate these friendly conversations about music! All is well man. Love both bands and I do enjoy symphonic metal.
Great review. I’m also a death/trash/doom guy. I love classic bands like Obituary, Death, Asphyx, etc, but my favourite band is Nightwish. Is that weird? No, it’s just my taste. It’s just different type of metal that needs to be enjoyed in a different way. The thing is that listening to bands like Nightwish is a completely different experience. It’s not only about the music itself, it’s about storytelling, escape from reality, deep meaning of the lyrics, etc, more than just listen to a great song. That’s why albums like this one should be listened as a whole experience. You pointed that very well. It’s like listening to a Pink Floyd album. Songs are great but if you hear, for example, The Dark Side Of The Moon at once, it’s a completely different experience. I really liked this review. You are really an open-minded metalhead and I love that. There are some metalheads out there (metal elitists) who think that if it’s not super heavy, it’s just bad and can’t even appreciate the creativity, work and effort that bands like Nightwish puts to create such music experience, like Nightwish does. You just need to listen to this music from a different perspective, as you did, and that’s great! So, kuddos to you. 🤟🏻

End of An Ocean of Strange Islands is multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley playing Uilleann pipes, essentially Irish bagpipes. A much more pleasant sound than the Scottish variety. You didn't mention Children of Ata (unless I missed it), I guess being someone who likes the heavier stuff you didn't like that one as it's more commercial, poppy (with analogue Moog synths? That's a first from NW 😂). For me it's one of my favorites along with An Ocean, Lanternlight and Spider Silk
