Great interview pedro.. Troy for me is a master of his craft.. personally i love where nightwish have gone with this album, their evolution and direction is refreshing and brave.🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
That's a great interview Pedro. I must confess after your initial comments on the singles I was kind of done with you. But it is great you had your own journey with the album, took your time, and had the courage to change your mind. A talent not many people have. So kudos for that! I drop my frustrations now beneath the Lanternlight. And what a lovely human being Troy is by the way. The fabric of the conversation you had with him was love. I fely it and was touched by it. So thanks again. 🙏🏻🦋✨🔥
Agreeing on your suggestion Pedro (if I may be so bold to use your name), Nightwish needs to play the "Yesterwynde" Album Live from start to finish - it will be their "Pink Floyd - The Wall" type of Concert - Damn, my hair on my arms just raised by the thought of it..
After a few listens, gotta say Ocean, Mechanism, Children, Weave and Lanternlight are fire. Less sold on the other few songs at various degrees though there are great things in each.
Pedro you stole my thought exactly! Listening to the album for the 3rd time yesterday my main thoughts were that this album should be played e2e live! Was not maybe fully convinced after the singles either, but now i feel that mix is just perefect and it's the strongest album with Floor. I like e.g. 🥁 more on this album than perhaps with a couple of previous ones. :)
I remember Troy from the You Slosh days, saw them many times around Leeds & York. Such a talented musician - so many cracking nights out... Love you Troy, "Let's go men....", what a Glorious Racket. 👍❤️
I'm currently at the part where y'all are talking about Sway. And where it lands on the album. The contrast of what came before it. And this is something, imo, that Nightwish has LONG been a master of. Those soft soothing ballads right after very heavy sections are like the calm after the storm. And it's one of my favorite things they do. They did it in EFMB with Our Decades in the Sun coming RIGHT after Yours is an Empty Hope. On Dark Passion Play, they did it by putting Eva RIGHT after Master Passion Greed. On Century Child, Forever Yours comes RIGHT after Slaying the Dreamer. And it always has such a great effect.
Floor about "Sway" (i.e. Tuomas going behind her back, inserting the Troy attachment): "For this track we didn't sing the vocal parts together [Floor & Troy]. When I heard it back later, all vocal parts were doubled all of a sudden. Tuomas' choice, and that's about all I'm willing to say about it. I resign myself to this ..//.. I wouldn't have done it this way. I think the track actually didn't quite benefit from the harmonies with Troy, but then again it's also kinda unique". - Floor Jansen (Aardschok Metal Magazine, Aug/Sept edition)
Thank you for this conversation, the honesty and the questions 🫰🏻 It was really insightful to hear from Troy why the mixing sounds the way it sounds, and I understand what they try to achieve. Though, since Floor wasn't as involved as she was in the previous records, I wonder if she is satisfied with the final result. I have a strange feeling that she doesn't (she hasn't said much in social media and she is very active) Once again, thank you 😄 I can rest in peace knowing that we still have Nightwish.
I can understand some not liking this evolution, it IS quite different than Dark Passion Play etc. But I also wonder how people who know NW and how precise they are with how they want their songs to sound thought that the singles were badly mixed. For sure it was VERY different sound for me too, but I never questioned it in that regard. And now we know why; they are an element in the tapestry of Yesterwynde, not individual pieces. And also, it just requires active listening to hear what you want to pick up from that sound. Which wouldn't be bad for many to practice as it requires concentration and slowing down, focusing. There's always the Spotify top 10 POP list one can put on as a background music. This not that (to me at least).
Thanks for this, from another Canadian. I hope some Nightwish spinoff's get to Canada. My wife would enjoy Floor's solo show or perhaps an Auri concert in Montreal.
Great interview as always Pedro. I think this is the best Floor Jansen era Nightwish album. It’s unpredictable and sonically excellent imo . Cheers A&P 🤘
When I first listened to "Sway" I spontaneously said: OMG is this beautiful! But in my opinion the whole album is a masterpiece. I love the heavy and soft songs equally and I am glad that Nightwish still follows its own way and do not listen to the fans who do not want them to change. Great interview, thank you very much.
"Enigmatic... richly coloured" - best descriptor of Yesterwynde Being practically raised by Nightwish for decades, I can tell you that growing up with the fandom is exactly like growing up with divorced parents. There is no winning with every album release. Let me put this shortly: if you love listening to their instrumental and orchestral versions of their albums, and prefer progressive music that experiments and surprises you, you will favour this new evolution. If you prefer their live versions, are mainly drawn to Floor's vocals including her solo, and love the Eurovision-esque catchiness found on EFMB... you may be sorely disappointed. And that's okay. No need to turn ourselves into the likes of Tool fans - the warnings of insufferable toxicity lol. It's just music, no need for combative resentment.
Troy talks about the reasons of not touring the album. According to him, one of the main reasons is that they are too tired and need a break. Floor said today in her interview with the Charismatic Voice, that they decided not to talk about the reasons and therefore she would not reveal any explanation. How is it that a band of this magnitude with a professional marketing team behind them does not have a consistent message when it comes to these kind of questions? I find that really strange.
Nightwish has allways been kinda oddchild, untraditional or different with some of them decisions regarding announcements, pr etc..firing Tarja is example of that style with its open letters etc. I think Tuomas have deliberately act as an "dictator" or such regarding many things like that. It look like that more, if u think his comment in some interview where he said that he have won twice in "life lottery"; 1)He can live same small east Finnish village where he have allways live and spend childhood there but he still can travel the world..2) They as an band and him as composer have allways manage to keep their independence and there are no any person or manager from record label or from anywhere who trying to tell them what to do.
Thinking, if you take classic heavy metal and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by The Beatles - i'd reckon one might have a reasonable concept on understanding "Yesterwynde". To me Tuomas is a Linux KERNEL for the full operating system Nightwish OS. Floor is the properly heated Sauna.
At last an interviewer who understands the mix of this album. Do many people complain about it and cannot see past Floor not being more forward. It's not the point at all.
