  • With Leica, Panasonic and Sigma all released their L-mount camera after the L-mount alliance was formed last year, I thought it's a good time to get all the L-mount cameras together and see how well do they work with the lenses from another brand. Here is a quick video to show you my results.

    I think the L-Mount from 3 companies is great. Sigma will be the most important player as not all can pay $ 9'000 to 15'000 for a set of three lenses from Panasonic Pro or Leica. When you buy a used Leica SL body now for approx. 2'500 and the best Sigma, you have a powerful set. No need to run around with 47 MP or the last hype.

    So far the Leica 90mm SL lens and the Sigma 35mm 1.2 and 14-24 2.8 have worked flawlessly on my S1. Of those lenses, I own the Sigma 35mm 1.2 and updating the firmware was easy via a memory card and attached to the body.

    In case anyone wants to know, Leica S lenses won't autofocus on S1 body with the s to l adapter.

    Good to hear the lenses are compatible, thanks. I have a S1R on backorder and I am getting nervous about the lack of Sigma glass for L mount yet. I hope S1 sales will pick up so more native lenses be available since I don't want to use adapters.

      I can't say much but more native L mount lenses are definitely coming in 2020!

    I recently got the S1 and also got the MC21 adapter. I still have Canon EF lenses and to my surprise they all work with the adapter. Now like many have said before, no AFC and focus is a bit slow. Not terrible. Def not for sports photography. But I am strictly landscape and portrait. So it works for me until they release more lenses...

    I have the Lumix S5 with the 20-60 plus the Sigma 14-24 f2.8. i have on order the Sigma 150-600 dg dn. I have no issues using Sigma Lenses. The only downside is the weight in comparison to the Panasonic Lenses, but given the price difference, l can put up with that.

    Could you do an in depth comparison for photos taken by these lens (portrait, landscape, creaminess of bokeh, vignette etc.) Couldnt seem to find any video on UA-cam for that.

    Hi Richard, great to know more about L-mount! It would be very interesting if you could show how the lens stabilisation works on the different cameras (video and foto). Especially the Leica SL 24-90 on an S1 (and S1H). It would also be very Interesting if you could show us the stylistic differences (not quality) between the different lenses of all three brands. For example the transition length of the blur of a Leica lens vs. a Sigma lens. Or the native color interpretation of an S1 using a lumix lens vs. a Leica Lens? Is that possible? Thanks for your great effort!

    Richard I have the SL2-S and am thinking about picking up the 70-200 F4 Lumix Pro lens. I wanted to ask if the 70-200 OIS work in conjunction on the Leica SL2-S bodies as they do with the panasonic's, and if not which would be preferable and give you better compensation, using the OIS on the lens or the IBIS in the Leica?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Bruce, sorry i have not have a chance to try out the SL2-S (and not with the Lumix lens as well) so can't answer most of your questions. But usually for longer focal length, OIS works better than IBIS

    One question: do lens profiles auto correct in-camera across brands? I shoot DNG+JPG (small). Not sure how and when new lens profiles are added to firmware or if they are just updated in-camera the first time one mounts a new lens.

I want to buy the leica sl but I’m not sure if the price difference suposes better colors. Thanks so much!

    Hi Richard
    I own the SIGMA FP and the Panny 24-105 F.4
    I think I found a BUG
    When switching from still to cine on the SIGMA I lose Auto Focus Function
    Then I turn the camera off and back on and everything is fine
    Please confirm this is true for you
    Best regards, Rick

    I had heard that the MC-21 isn't compatible with the Leica cameras because no one will buy expensive but native Leica lenses anymore. Is that true? regards Jog

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  4 роки тому

      I know the mc21 doesn't work with the SL because the SL was released before the L mount alliance was formed and it was using the original (old) spec. But I don't know about the sl2, I haven't got the mc21 this time when testing the sl2

    • @fellowcitizen
      @fellowcitizen 4 роки тому

      @@TheRealRichardWong Thanks again for another handy video. I was just about to ask if you'd tried the SL2 and the MC-21. It should technically work if they're all compliant with the current protocols and up to date, yet, I know that only lenses and cameras are part of the L Mount Alliance protocols, and so Leica could probably simply block the adaptor without breaching the agreement (though, they allowed Novoflex to have adaptors previously so they're not necessarily against them). It's really the SL2 which is the most telling since it is the first Leica released since the Alliance.
      @Alej The MC-21 will probably improve with firmware as the MC-11 did. Sigma can directly change and innovate the protocols of the L mount, whereas they can only subscribe to the E mount and licence to reverse-engineer the EF mount, so not only could the F/W improve, but the protocols themselves could adapt when the Alliance approve one another's updates. Another factor is simply that most reflex lenses are designed for a different focus mechanism - some of the newer reflex lenses are designed with these in mind, and that's probably why Sigma only officially supports the ART/Sports/Contemporary lenses (and among those the 2017+ lenses are probably faster.)

    2021 update... Leica reps told me Sigma and Panasonic lenses don't work as well on my Sl2 because they have "different power requirements." This causes my Sl2 to be forced out of any multi shot mode over 3 fps once the battery his 75% or less. That's extremely disappointing. The L-mount alliance isn't living up to its claims.

    • @chloescanlon1107

      That’s because, even though it was Leica’s idea to invite Sigma and Panasonic to the party, they still look down on the other two. If you notice watching Leica people like Red Dot etc they never talk about Panasonic and Sigma lenses. Like we can all afford £3,500 for a 50mm f2 apo when you can get the Panasonic equivalent for £450… and you will be hard pressed to notice the difference.
      Leica are basically snobs… like a kid who invited their two mates to the party but changed their mind as they’re gonna get all the girls.
