    Yeah, it is big. It is a carry-over lens being HSM. Sigma's new 85/1.4 and the 35/1.4, they have been built up from scratch as DG DN Art lenses and as such, smaller than the any of the current equivalent current HSM lenses. Will be interesting to see Sigma do the same with this lens and make it a true 50/1.4 DG DN Art lens. The new 85 & 35 have an aperture ring if you want to do it manually. I have both the new 35 & 85/1.4 lenses in addition to my M lenses and I think they are terrific. I really don't use their lens hoods so they do look smaller on my SL2.

    A few weeks ago, I used my old Canon DSLR again for a long time because I needed a Macro Lens. Most of the time, I was fighting with the autofocus to focus on the right parts of the image. I don't hit the focus with my manual focus cameras and lenses all the time, but I produced much more out to focus pictures with my autofocus lenses.

    I have the lens, and i agree, of course, it IS massive. It doesn't look unbalanced on my SL, but it does look ridiculously gigantic on my Sigma FP and my Leica T. Image quality is very, very good indeed, up there with the best from any other brand, good value for money, too bad it is so big and heavy that more often than not I will leave it at home...

    Autofocus isn't the only reason that the Sigma Art is so large. The original lens design is from the Sigma 50mm Art for DSLR's like Nikon F, Canon EF and Pentax K. It is essentially a DSLR lens with an extended barrel to allow for the the EF to L mount adapter. You would get the equivalent lens with the Sigma 50mm Art with Sigma MC21 adapter, although that combination's autofocus will be hit and miss on a L mount body. Sigma will eventually make a DG DN version which will be designed for mirrorless cameras, which should offer better autofocus and smaller size/weight.

    At some point stupidly big lenses should become its own category: SBL. Some lenses are getting far too large, which I assume is due to trying to deal with even more megapixels, aside from autofocus, which is also getting out of hand.
    When you think of an M camera and optical rangefinder after a certain point an optical finder just won't deliver enough focusing precision for the gigantic number of megapixels, like I see in the newer M models. Then you need an EVF for any kind of precision manual focusing. If they had a brain they would go for dynamic range at this point, or sensor tweaks that matter.
    I think we are reaching the limits of sanity with some of this tech. To me, with Leica M bodies (which I do not own) and rangefinders in general, the compactness of the system and nice small lenses is what is really attractive. Sure you don't get much in the way of telephoto but if you want that there are other systems.
    I like nice compact high-quality lenses for any camera system, it's one reason I like the old manual systems. Now even with some bigger expensive lenses you have some that are half-assed performers that they fix it in camera, and they are still expensive. I seem to recall someone doing a review of a fancy new Nikon lens and the actual distortion was worthy of a cheap 1970's zoom lens, but the camera fixed it with internal software, making corrections the glass should have made. So, what are people really paying for?

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  2 роки тому

      Thanks John, yes! If you see my 24mm video you see the distortion as I had the lens profile turned off. Signs told me that it needs to be used with their software to perform well (vs Leica etc that were design well out the box even 50+ years ago.. not just Leica*)

    Hi Matt, yes, The Sigma Art 50 1.4 is a monstrous lens. Wayyy too big for my taste and unfortunately, they do not offer a compact DG DN Contemporary 50 (unless you want to consider the 45mm 2.8). I've grown used to autofocus lenses but am by no means married to them. They serve a purpose. When used correctly, they provide instant critical focus, much faster than I could possibly get in run and shoot situations. In my film days, sort of close to "f8 and be there photography" using sunny 16 (adjusted to f8), and zone focus, only with much more precise focus and exposure. For portraiture, I agree that with L system cameras, you are better off using manual focus. I don't believe there is any L system camera offered right now that matches the ease and precision of Sony or Canon autofocus for such critical work. That said, I prefer using my vintage manual lenses when shooting deliberately and my autofocus lenses when being more casual in my approach. I think I'd be all over a Sigma 50 DG DN offering.

  • @jklphoto

    No idea why these mirrorless lenses dwarf previous AF lenses, never mind MF. Canon and Nikon make 50mm f1.4 lenses that are downright miniscule compared to these monstrosities. Sony also decided to shrink the camera, yet explode the lenses to absurd proportions. If Sigma decides to redesign this HSM lens into a DG DN configuration, I pray it's SMALLER!

    • @fellowcitizen
      @fellowcitizen 2 роки тому +1

      Mirrourless lenses are smaller than SLR counterparts. The basis for the large size is twofold, and not due to them being mirrourless - sensors require telecentric ray designs, whereas film lenses can have extremely oblique rays; and high-density sensors are again more demanding on lenses - requiring them to be of a larger, higher standard or risk magnifying defects.
      Sensors and lenses keep developing, though, so there have been improvements, and computing power is also better at redressing some defects on the fly, allowing high powered compact lenses. Sigma was initially opposed to computer intervention for their high end lenses, however, Leica convinced them otherwise.

    • @jklphoto
      @jklphoto 2 роки тому +1

      @fellow citizen your first sentence is counter to the rest. Mirrorless lenses are NOT smaller than their SLR counterparts. That's my point. If an M-lens can throw an image circle sufficient to cover the 24x36 format, then it doesn't need to be bigger than a Leica 50mm Summilux-M. Sigma DG DN lenses are smaller than their previous HSM counter parts because they no longer are designed for mirrored SLR bodies.

    • @fellowcitizen
      @fellowcitizen 2 роки тому

      @@jklphoto Scientifically, short-flange based lens designs MAY be smaller than long-flange designs like SLRs and rangefinders. The benefit is greatest with wide-angle lenses, and may not affect telephoto lenses much.
      If a short-flange mirrourless design is larger than an slr design it means that a decision has been made to make it more powerful, however, an slr lens of that same size would not be as powerful (all else being equal).
      Obviously, there may be specific differences in materials, or one design may be genius and another crappy, and these will also make a difference.
