I used to work in a bar in Georgetown, DC. Dylan would come in every once in a while. We all agreed not to bother him in any way-no questions, no fan stuff. He ended up telling some really funny jokes and getting to know our bartenders quite well. A great guy, if treated like a real one.

Wow. May I ask when this was and what bar? I worked in Georgetown back in the late 90s (at the now closed Houston's) and was a regular on the bar scene. I don't think a lot of journalists understand the way musician's, poets, etc create art. You can't ask him questions like, "Where do your songs come from?" I mean, you either have it or you don't. Either you're creative or you're not. You can't expect Dylan to answer that.
But if the interviewer frames the question as such: "What inspired you to write [artwork's name]?", then this question could be easily answered. When it comes to Bob Dylan, it's more about his willingness to answer, because it gives power to the interviewer to steer the conversation. And as he said in this video, he isn't too keen on being pupperteered.

I doubt he'd do that to non-media figures. An official interview is a different(and maybe annoying) thing. If you were to ask him stuff I think he'd be all right with you, he just didn't really like the whole revering of artists thing I think.
Think how tiring it would be to be asked the same old questions over and over. I think any humble person would get sick and tired of being interviewed. He also looked stoned and tired. Anyway, I love him no matter how he acts. Is he supposed to be in a good and gracious mood at all times? He is unique and special. I love and admire him. It is amazing that he hasn't gone crazy from being so famous.
I love how the interviewer gives Bob a rather long winded theory of how he thinks he may have written All Along The Watchtower and finishing up says "I suppose what I want to know is when you write a song am I right about you doing it like that?" Bob: No. lol
It always baffles me when interviews go like this. Start slow. Ask the man how his day or week is going. See if he’s in good health. Starting with broad cliches clearly annoyed an already annoyed man.
The most notable thing about this painful 'interview', is that Bob, is, by and large, pretty much the same guy he was in the 1965 press conference he gave, 21 years before. Sure, he's more self assured in this, wiser by far - like anyone would hope to be - but there's nothing mysterious here. He's Bob. He was Bob back then, he's Bob here. What we have is a man with exceptional talents and an aura & charisma of epic proportions - he just exudes it. Was born with it. Doesn't question it - why? Sure, it helps he's smart as a whip, but so are many humans. I just get the overriding impression that it is exactly - and I mean *exactly* as he tells it - he really doesn't know why there's all this fixation about what he does - and what's so odd about that? It's totally human. And so is he. It must get so damn annoying having people fawning all over you, trying to read into every damn word, when all you really are is just another human trying to have a good time, trying to create some cool stuff ... but, how the heck do you equate that with how the media has reacted, how people have reacted? All I can say, is he is a very level headed and grounded guy to be able to take this onboard - but heck, by accounts, he got wounded by it. Wounded pretty bad. Some nasty nasty fuckers are out there in this world. All I can say is he has given us some great music - he has used the talents he was given to the upmost of his ability, why do we need to know anymore than that?
@@ChristopherSykesDocumentaries Thanks. I am constantly amazed by what humans can do when they pass that barrier we know as complacency. I never managed it myself, probably never will - most of us don't. I still continuously question, seek out answers and on the rare occasion may come close to what I could be. But damn, the sheer amazement I get from people who have actually done that - pushed the boat out, burned that candle from both ends, I can exist on just that...
Bob is not just a wonderful artist, the greatest, he's hilarious. I don't blame him for laughing or being guarded. I think he's very honest and open. Honestly, the way people treat him is appalling sometimes.
Bob Dylan always hated the media, they always wanted to pin 📍 something on him. He was quite positive and polite and I 😍 love you Bob Dylan, Elizabeth ❣️💞
This was shot in The Hammer!! Hamilton Ontario. I was studying Radio Broadcasting at Mohawk College at this time, and was an extra in the movie... the concert scenes that were shot at Copps Coliseum
It's funny because he just is who he is and he does what he does and he probably doesn't think about it too much as is often the case with extremely gifted but people keep trying to pin him down. haha. Just let him be and do his thing.
He is getting so close to the TRUTH in his interviews, which makes some people very uncomfortable, especially if they are hiding from the TRUTH all their life. Rarely the opponent is on the same level of consciousness. And we can enjoy real conversation between two equally intelligent human beings.
This is 1986,by this time Dylan is facing the same silly questions for over 20 years!! Plus I understand why he does not want to tell the media EXACTLY how he writes a song or what EXACTLY they are about.
I believe if Dylan had tuned into him and actually liked him that this interview would have gone a lot better. For instance, Dylan is laughing and the journalist is not. Bottom line, Dylan likes honesty in the people he is working with, or someone who knows how to be honest without hype.
Before you all slam Dylan, think about it. Here is this guy whom everyone is seeking answers, wisdom, insight... all things that he can't offer. He's a very private guy who just wants to play music and mostly... to be left alone. The "arrogant" Dylan is just a facade. When you are as famous as he, one has to always be watchful for those seeking money, a story or some other self-serving desire. This interviewer is nice, but imagine how much money this interview is worth.
I think that is so cool that, Michael Judge just let Bob Dylan be a human and sit in your bar, are you going to listen to his 82 Birthday party on UA-cam tomorrow?, Elizabeth ❤️ I Love Bob Dylan Greatest of all
He looked very servere with eyeliner...I've loved this guy for 33 years and seen him try to field such ridiculous and unanswerable questions from so many interviewers and generally he comes off as rude and uninterested - I don't think it's always the case, I think he reacts directly to the depth and significance of the questions he's being asked, which are generally vague and unanswerable - great clip 🔥
I understand the way he answers stuff so cryptically. I'm an artist and musician. When I solo, I don't think about what I'm making. When I write songs, I don't think about what I'm writing. I think all good art is just streams of consciousness or creativty or emotion. You don't think when you create genuinely, things just come to you. People chalk his answers up to "Dylan being Dylan" but I think it's more "an artist being an artist."
don't think dylan could have been able to stand the interview without drawing, it puts the interviewer on the defense and the psychological field is leveled and he's able to speak.
Dylan granted the interview because he was promoting the BBC documentary that was partly filmed here, in Hamilton, Ontario. It was during the time of making the film, Hearts of Fire.
yes..dylan never uses foul language or tells any interviewer to f.off he's never punched a photographer for taking his pictue or anything like that he doesn't verbally abuse the interviewer why people think he's mean is wrong...he's shy and reserved/ people who are shy seem rude to people who don't know those people personally
The guy is the very essence of the meaning of artist. Not like any other EVER! If one could go back and interview Monet, Picasso or say Hugo, they would get the same type of interview, they are true artists. Unlike Jagger or the others he mentions, not even Sir Paul comes up like Dylan. Dylan is always putting out new stuff, always, you may not like it all but he's always evolving and today we have none of that. His comment on the industry and how notion that its all watered-down with talent less money grabbers is spot on, Not only in music but all the arts. Everything is just mediocre and his reason is 100% correct.

this 10 minute portion of this interview has made me like dylan much more
The most difficult man to interview ever. A journalists nightmare. But guess what - I still love him and his music
It's like adolescence, impossible to overlook, impossible to forget.
I love it he's trying to distract the guy so he's drawing a picture of him I love it
When will they know, Bob has and always will do what he wants !
"yeah, I can talk while I'm doing it" LOL oh Bob!
Dylan was a very private person. He did not let anyone in his life . He is a very humble man.
Was?
He looks pretty rough here! I can’t believe he just stayed in his trailer here in 🇨🇦! That’s Awesome!
I love how the interviewer gives Bob a rather long winded theory of how he thinks he may have written All Along The Watchtower and finishing up says "I suppose what I want to know is when you write a song am I right about you doing it like that?" Bob: No. lol
I know what you mean. It seems like Dylan is more interested in the drawing and barely listening to this guy's inane questions.
It always baffles me when interviews go like this. Start slow. Ask the man how his day or week is going. See if he’s in good health. Starting with broad cliches clearly annoyed an already annoyed man.
Everybody acting like this interview is asking dumb questions. No. This interviewer is excellent.
Absolutely fantastic ,Dylan at his aloof best .
He sure had a grin on his face after the "I'll be right back" part. Plus a little drip...-
OMG!!!
Bob Dylan is so veiny
Real good, what you say here...
Dylan: "I'll be RIGHT back"
Producer: "Heh heh... ten years later ..."
Bob says, "I just write 'em because nobody says you can't write em."
Make no mistake, there is no person that wants to perpetuate the dylan mystique more than dylan.
Bob is not just a wonderful artist, the greatest, he's hilarious. I don't blame him for laughing or being guarded. I think he's very honest and open. Honestly, the way people treat him is appalling sometimes.
I really just think Bob likes f*cking with British people. This is like "Don't Look Back," 20 years on.
Is funny, Dylan always try to reverse the situation from being a interview to a regular conversation.
Ok .Just hold on for a second,I'll be right back. 🤣👏👏Dylan came back with his humor with him.
I’ve waited 44 years for you.
It's funny because he just is who he is and he does what he does and he probably doesn't think about it too much as is often the case with extremely gifted but people keep trying to pin him down. haha. Just let him be and do his thing.
I love this. ❤❤❤. I Just love thé way you talk to the press. It’s just blessed. There you go!
He is getting so close to the TRUTH in his interviews, which makes some people very uncomfortable, especially if they are hiding from the TRUTH all their life. Rarely the opponent is on the same level of consciousness. And we can enjoy real conversation between two equally intelligent human beings.
When he left the trailer in the beginning, he believe he went and did a line...
...sniff..sniff...
Dylan after he smoked a really good joint. I love it!
His voice sounds exactly the same as it did in his interviews in the 60s.
As familiar I am with Dylan.... I have never heard of Hearts of Fire movie........ Stay Forever Young bob!
Not a great movie tbh
This is 1986,by this time Dylan is facing the same silly questions for over 20 years!!
Plus I understand why he does not want to tell the media EXACTLY how he writes a song or what EXACTLY they are about.
He's like a walking talking work of art to me.
It’s like the guy watched every hopeless interviewer in Don’t Look Back and thought, ‘Yeah…that line of questioning worked.’
When faced with generally unanswerable questions, Dylan, like anyone, becomes unavoidably vague.
This interviewer is really good. Finally someone who can interview Dylan
This is a man right here :) I want one like this
reminds me of the interview with the science student in don't look back, 20 years earlier.
don't think dylan could have been able to stand the interview without drawing, it puts the interviewer on the defense and the psychological field is leveled and he's able to speak.
Bob is absolutely brilliant and truly a beautiful person!❤
I do believe he is being for real. I like that.
Robbie Hart from Wedding Singer stole his look!
So did Adam Sandler in that movie about 9/11
Dylan granted the interview because he was promoting the BBC documentary that was partly filmed here, in Hamilton, Ontario. It was during the time of making the film, Hearts of Fire.
yes..dylan never uses foul language or tells any interviewer to f.off
he's never punched a photographer for taking his pictue or anything like that
he doesn't verbally abuse the interviewer
why people think he's mean is wrong...he's shy and reserved/ people who are shy seem rude to people who don't know those people personally
He's a bad ass, haha but i like because puts media and interviewers into his place!
WHY IS HE SO SEXY GAWWWWD HOW WAS THE INTERVIEWER NOT TWEAKING 😭😭😭😭
The guy is the very essence of the meaning of artist. Not like any other EVER! If one could go back and interview Monet, Picasso or say Hugo, they would get the same type of interview, they are true artists. Unlike Jagger or the others he mentions, not even Sir Paul comes up like Dylan. Dylan is always putting out new stuff, always, you may not like it all but he's always evolving and today we have none of that. His comment on the industry and how notion that its all watered-down with talent less money grabbers is spot on, Not only in music but all the arts. Everything is just mediocre and his reason is 100% correct.
Agreed
