Dolly Parton is a national treasure.
Global treasure. Global.
@@sheireland3737 Nope. We take credit for her lol. You might love her but shes OUR treasure. Tennessee specifically can take it from us as a country lol
@@videovoidtv Nope..she is nobody's property and she is an international icon.
What other country could produce this particular talent? Opera singers can be global treasures but Dolly is all American 🇺🇸
@@judithstrenio9552 What nonsense! The talent can come from any country..sadly the PR and commercial succes can only come from the US because it unfortunately is allowed to run the show in the west.
And just one of the many reason that is sad is underlined by your comment ..so very inspired by typically American ignorance regarding the world outside America. " Opera singers"🙄🤣
When you look at some of Dolly Parton's credits (singer, songwriter, musician, actress, businesswoman, entrepreneur) She one amazing woman.
I have always admired Dolly. She is a lady of many talents. I’m happy you had positive things to say about her! ❤️🎼🎸💞🎤🌺
I agree
She was a trail blazer in country music. No one controlled Dolly but Dolly. She made jokes about wigs, DV & other subjects that had been used against women in that genre. I'm an old hippy who loves her rock & roll but Dolly & a few others are just legends!
@@lisaahlers3491 Dolly Parton is well respected by those in and out of the music industry.
@@katiekane5247 Dolly Parton has that crossover appeal regardless of what genres of music your into.
How interesting to SEE what makes her voice so compelling! Even besides her unmistakably beautiful voice and many talents, she's an angel. So far, 100 million books have been given away to children in her Imagination Library program for kids from birth to 5 years old. Thanks for giving Dolly her due as you always do!
She does so much for the community she came from
She also gave 1k a month to the victims of the smoky mountain fires, to help them get back on their feet. No politics, no favors, just good old honest help from another human; Refreshing it is to say the least.
So true Lynn. Dolly Parton has so many layers to her, one of which is her humanitarianism.👍
Dolly donated a million dollars to Pfizer which resulted in the Pfizer Vaccine for Covid19
@@CitizenCardigan I didn't know that! Awesome, thanks!
Dolly is still an attractive lady at 76 years young and it causes many to forget how really gorgeous she was when she was younger, in addition to being a great vocalist, musician, and song writer.
Stunning fact: Dolly wrote Jolene and I will always love you in the same night!
Years ago I lived in Nashville, and at the time, was dating an audiologist. She had to give Dolly a hearing test, and said Dolly was exactly the same in person, just a wonderful, sweet person. Others stars that she tested could be a real pain, but Dolly is a very special person. She is also very, very smart, as well as a great singer, entertainer, and song-writer.
I grew up in Nashville and saw her at the Woolco on Thompson Lane (a discount store) while she was still on the Porter Wagoner show in the late sixties. She was pushing her shopping cart and smiled that big smile at us while we looked with our mouths open. So down to earth but larger than life.
For me, that talking-singing technique comes from a storytelling place. (It's interesting that you referenced Sinatra, as I've always considered him to be a musical storyteller too). It's like Dolly inhabits the character in the song for those three minutes, and uses whatever tools she needs to tell that person's story. (Sometimes -- as in the case of a song like "Me and Little Andy" --- she actually creates a specific voice that the character might have.). Here the song represents a conversation between the narrator and Jolene, and she's thus performing it in a conversational style, and it seems -- to me at least -- almost like she does this without even thinking about it. I really enjoyed your analysis, Fil.
Appalachia has a deep tradition of oral history, sometimes greatly embellished. Good observation.
Yes, your description is perfect . In Ireland there’s a saying, “Say a song, tell a story” when it comes to traditional singing. Dolly Parton’s Appalachian roots come out of the same kind of tradition.
Sammy Davis is another one
Dolly not only plays the guitar but also many other instruments such as the flute, harmonica, banjo, violin, saxophone, piano and many more.
Not every singer is a story teller. For Dolly it’s as natural as breathing. Such a talented and kind lady. I’m proud that she’s a Tennessean!!! Thanks Fil.
She was paid 40 million for a season on the network Television. I did not appreciate what an opportunity it was to experience her music at the time.
I love that you pointed out her authenticity and it coming through in her singing. Also, she has done more to help people than we will ever know. God bless Dolly.
So right. I moved to Dolly's neck of Tennessee a short time ago and I'm hard pressed to find any local who has not be touched by Dolly's generosity and humanitarian efforts. She built Dollywood to provide decent jobs for locals while touring, writing, recording, acting, providing books to Tennessee's children and educational assistance to Tennessee's kids graduating high school. She is a force of nature providing for her community far better than the state ever has. Where is her Nobel Peace prize?
Linda Ronstadt was one of the most gifted singers of her time, and she wanted to sing with Dolly along with Emmylou Harris.
When such a talented duo asked Dolly to join them, that shows their respect.
What a collaboration.
Love your use of the software. Not a gimmick, a tool.
The Trio albums are wonderful. Some of my favorites are Those Memories of You, Wildflowers, and Hobo's Meditation (lol it has an odd charm) It's amazing how three totally different unique voices blend so well.
I used to drive by her parents house in TN on my way to work, always loved her music, she's really a kind person she gives every kid who graduates Sevier county's high-school $600.00 toward college.
I'm not a big country fan but how can you not love Dolly? This is a great song ❤
Check out Dolly's rendition of "Stairway to Heaven".
Thanks for looking at Dolly again. She’s still amazing. Her Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction was wild. She walked out in black leather with an electric guitar and blew everyone away. Such a great person ❤
I've always thought Dolly's singing is the way it is because she sings songs she's written herself based on her life. She's a gifted storyteller both when being interviewed or in the songs she writes so she often has passages when she "talks" rather than sings. She has a very unique voice, easy to listen to. On a side note.....why would a man give any other woman a second look if he's married to Dolly? Beauty, brains, kind and generous...yet Jolene got his full attention.
Did Jolene get his attention? All I have ever heard Dolly say was that Jolene was giving HIM attention but I never heard her say that he gave Jolene HIS attention. I would love to be pointed to the interview or introduction to this song where Dolly hints that Carl was at all interested in Jolene. She jokingly said she "went home and beat the hell out of him" but I took that just as Dolly being Dolly and do not believe for a minute that she actually laid a hand on him. I think she is secure enough in his love for her that she is not afraid of the occasional woman who might give him the roving eye. Am I wrong?
You can dislike, even *hate*, country music - but if you don't love and respect Dolly, there's something wrong with YOU.
I didn’t appreciate Dolly until I got older and realized the breadth of her talents!
Dolly is like David Attenborough everyone loves them
Thanks for the great analysis. Dolly Parton is one of the biggest country stars & is a great singer-songwriter & actress. She has been recording since the 60's & has composed over 3,000 songs including "I Will Always Love You", "Coat Of Many Colors", "9 to 5" etc. She has done numerous duets with Porter Wagoner, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson & many others. She also performed as a "Trio" with Emmylou Harris & Linda Ronstadt & released a few albums with them. She has a huge library of songs.
A surprisingly technical analysis of a remarkable singer and beloved personality, but interesting and completely respectful.
The mid 1960s to mid 1970s was the era of the singer/songwriter. John Denver, Heart, James Taylor, Jimi Hendrix, Dolly, the Carpenters, etc. Some of the most iconic music ever made. Fil, thank you for your work. I always enjoy your breakdowns.
Nailed it, best 10 years of music ever. That era did more with less than any other generation. An amazing time in music. Thanks for pointing that out, anyone who thinks about it carefully and knows the music and production capabilities of the time, couldn't come to any other conclusion. That generation put man on the moon, yet they had less computing and production power than I carry in my pocket today. Not sure when this song came out, but your comment is on the money regardless.
You can add Carly Simon to that list.
You need to understand that songwriting isn't the criteria for greatness.
For every million songwriters, there's but ONE Ella Fitzgerald.
ONE presley. ONE Sinatra.
ONE Ray charles, etc.....
These artists literally interpreted the words of another writer, and turned them into critically acclaimed masterpieces in the recording studio.
That's why for every million songwriters, there's but ONE of these iconic ARTISTS.
Elton John explained, that the most difficult thing in music is to interpret the words of another writer, into critically acclaimed masterpieces.
The artists I just mentioned, did that on numerous occasions. That's truly remarkable.
Harry Chapin was underrated.
Keith richards said that there's a reason why no one has interpreted the Rolling Stones classics and improved upon them.
He said the same thing about elvis, Ella, Ray, frank, etc....
Take a listen to pure perfection.
Frank on "fly me to the moon"
Ray charles on " America the beautiful".
Elvis on "Heartbreak hotel" 1956.
Ella Fitzgerald on "love for sale", etc....etc......
The list of essential masterpiece recordings for these artists is ENDLESS.
TIMELESS.......
IF anyone is having trouble grasping this reality, it literally speaks volumes about your lack of intelligence and critical thinking.
Years ago, someone uploaded a video called Jolene at 33 RPM. I just checked to see if it is still up and it now has over 11 million views. It was Russell Crowe who publicised it on his Twitter a couple of years ago when it only had a few thousand views. Then a newspaper article writing about Russell Crowe's tweet, drew my attention to it. It is really worth a listen, to hear how the slow speed changed Dolly's voice. It sounds incredible. Dolly should officially release it in 33 RPM. It would be a big hit.
Dolly is such a prolific songwriter/storyteller. Her song "Coat Of Many Colors" became a movie a few years back, of which she was an executive producer. Her songs (and the movie) really tug at your heartstrings. 💙
I love coat of many colors, wow what a fantastic song!
Thanks, Cindy! I missed that and will be searching for it now!
Cind Powers... Dolly Parton is one amazing woman. Coat Of Many Colors is one of many songs she wrote that I love.😊🧡✌🌈
Oops! forgot the Y at the end of your name 😔
It's a great song for anyone who is a victim of bullies. Great inspiration.
Excellent analysis on an excellent artist as Dolly Pardon is! as you know she can act as well. I hope that Dolly Pardon will see this and get in touch with you Fil. 😊
You might want to learn how to spell her name. It's Parton, not Pardon.
@@willdwyer6782 thanks for pointing that out. I know it "Parton" the spell check automatically change the "T" to "D"
The story I've heard her tell about how this song came to be is that she was signing autographs, and and a beautiful little girl with red hair named 'Jolene' came up. She said she told her her name was beautiful, and that she would one day write a song using her name! This is the first time I've heard THIS story behind the song.
I heard her tell the same story about the girl maybe she used the child's name in place of the bank hussy real name no need to make her name famous
@@arizonaskye4179 I agree. She probably used the little girl's name (she told her she would) and she may even have given "Jolene" the little girl's red hair but that would just be to further deflect any knowledge of who the "hussy" really was.
Dolly is what we wish other artists to be. A beautiful empathetic person that is amazingly talented. She will do things for her fans instead of expecting her fans to do things for her. Awesome video Sir.
Thanks!
I have been a lifelong fan of Dolly and got to see her 2 times live, she was amazing playing guitar , Banjo , several other instruments. She was so beautiful almost looked unreal, when she was telling her story about her coat of many colors. She is one of a kind, I love her voice and she hits alot of high notes. She is a amazing personality so humble to be such a legend! I would love to see you do Marilyn Monroe!
Dolly is the complete package deal. She embodies her songs. No one can compete with her musically...take that Jolelen. To be able to talk sing adds a dimension that many singer can't go to.
Fun fact....when I was a kid I had a Dolly Parton Barbie. Thanks for a lovely analysis Fil😊❤️.
I've always much preferred Dolly's version of "I Will Always Love You" well over the later version sung by Whitney Houston. I don't know the terminology, but I find it much more musical, much more genuinely emotional, much more natural - and just prettier. As opposed to the Houston version, which sounds to my ear quite contrived and sort of gimmicky. I don't know if you would be willing to do a comparative analysis (which I would love to hear); but I would love to see your analysis of Dolly's "I Will Always Love You."
Absolutely 100% agree! Her heart is so in that song. And it shows. Having a choice, I always pick Dolly's version.
I like them both. Very different sounds to me.
Whitney Houston was a phenomenal singer, and her version of that song was just powerhouse.
Dolly's version was to me more heartfelt and touching, which is understandable because Dolly wrote the song and sang it with the emotion she felt for Porter Wagoner telling him goodbye.
@@l-annfvrsa, I like them both as well.
You can't deny Whitney's talent, but Dolly's soft, sweet delivery worked better with the meaning and emotion the song was conveying. Jmo
Dolly's original goes to your heart, Whitney's takes you to church. One of the things about great songs are the ways they get new focus and feeling when covered by other artists. Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt is another example of how performance changes things.
It's impossible not to love Dolly Parton! She's definitely up there amongst the best singer-songwriters!
I'm not a big country music fan, but I have always loved Dolly's voice. I make an exception to listen to her.
excellent interview. Much respect for Dolly denying the nominee for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She deserves a huge Award Show just for her!
She said she thought she hadn't earned it. Talk about hiding your light under a bushel!
She does! I’m an east Tennessean & we all love her.
@@angelavenable7308 We all love her no matter where you live. Pure as any human could be. There's a couple of her songs I consider to be Rock Pop and a couple of Rockish. She rocked 9 to 5 on the big screen. Agree that she is a Country girl.
Reba Mcentire also sings in her talking voice. Another COUNTRY QUEEN ..Hey! Do Reba from the 90s! Singer, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur, business woman, ect
Dolly is one of those artist who absolutely loves what she is doing and it shows. I've been watching and listening to Dolly for years. There is no one like her. Thank you for doing this review. I enjoyed this very much . :)
She looks so casual , relaxed ,and confident throughout the performance. None of the paused Stills capture any goofy expressions, or looks like nearly every performance would capture in still photos. Which demonstrates that she is never straining
Always love listening to and watching Dolly Parton. Great performer. I've also always enjoyed watching her interviews in which her speaking voice is pleasant to listen to as well. Thanks, Fil! ❤️🌹
The world needs more people like Dolly Parton.
If you want to see a HUGE difference in a singer's talking voice and his singing voice, you should check out Jim Nabors (Gomer Pile). His speaking voice is a high-pitched, sort of dorky voice and then when he sings it's so low and so deep that it's as though it's the voice of a totally different person. I'm trying to think of a country artist with a great difference between a singing and talking voice and right off the bat, I can't think of any. Maybe that's why I like country music so much. Most of the time the singer is absolutely singing with his talking voice. They're usually telling a story so that makes total sense to me.
I remember Dolly as a regular on The Porter Wagoner Show when I was a kid. My dad was legally blind but he could see a little. I still remember Dad kneeling on all fours with his face about six inches from the tv screen whenever Dolly came on, checking out her great pair of...lungs. He also loved Charo and Zsa Zsa Gabor. Mom was not amused.
Dolly is such an amazing and amazing woman beautiful inside and out amazing singer songwriter
I'm enjoying your channel so much. Adding to Dolly's long list of talents and humanitarian practices, she now has begun paying full college tuition for Dollywood employees, guaranteed. A true heart of gold. Thank you again for your expertise on her live rendition of "Jolene".
For me Dolly is America's most enchanting storyteller and sparkling personality! I think the whole world got very lucky when the wonder that is Dolly Parton came along. ✨💖🎁 And you, Fil, are so generous for gifting us with this master class that fascinates while teaching us. 👏🤘
one of few youtube channels i do not regret subscribing to. respect.
Thanks!
Dolly can do whatever she sets her mind to. Thank you so much for your analysis! 💖
Such a Celtic melody from Dolly!
Yes. A lot of ppl maybe don’t realize just how deep the Irish & Scots roots run in that area 🥰
@@irishgrl definitely! All those great songs about murder and infidelity are mountain favorites- as they are in Celtic and English folk songs!
To me, Dollys performance has a lot to do with experience. She has sung all her life. She has been honing her style forever! Thank you for letting me see the reason someone talking can be so natural while singing.
one of the very few country aretists, that even those that "hate" country listen too and sing along to, truly a gift to our ears and hearts
Brilliant! Dolly is my superhero! This was especially interesting as I've pitch-monitored myself singing 'Jolene'. That vocal line looked nothing like this...😂 There's so much rise and fall even in her speaking voice, I don't think I'd be able to do even that.
Dolly is absolutely wonderful. Among her accomplishments that many have listed should also be philanthropist. Her book program is inspired.
She augmented the story a bit here...lol...previously she shared it was a bank teller and she liked the name but nothing to do with her husband. Anyway she is a wonderful storyteller songwriter and a lovely mountain voice clarity and a great human being too!
Thanks so much! You should be teaching this in workshops to aspiring pop singers so they learn what it means to sing naturally AND perfectly.
When you slowed down those phrases, it really sounds so much like an Irish folk song. It fits with the story.
Fil could you please do an analysis of Linda Ronstadt,Emmy Lou Harris and Dolly Parton performing After the Goldrush.
Three marvelous vocalists at the top of their game harmonising.Dolly lead vocal,Emmy low harmony and Lindas absolutely beautiful high harmony is an absolute masterclass in vocal magnificence.
Dolly Parton is another one of the great country music artists. Thanks for sharing this analysis video. Cheers, Fil! ✌️
Thanks for this, I recommended her some months ago.
Dolly was & is a superb singer who controlled her own career & life. She never sold out & proved a lady can be tough without losing her femininity.
-I used to live in Knoxville, TN - Dolly started there at a radio station downtown - there was a big picture of her, on the front of a building downtown, from when she first started out, in her late teens/early twenties... a VERY beautiful young 🌱 woman !!!!
I saw Dolly in concert when she was singing/playing with Porter Wagoner in the 60's. I knew as a kid that she was special, and Porter had many sequins on his outfit. Wagoner was from a town in my area in SW Missouri.
This song gives me goosebumps.
Grew up listening to Dolly Parton on the Porter Wagoner show as my parents were big country music fans. Although I didn't care so much for country music, watching Dolly Parton perform and how she engaged with the audience was fantastic! Also seeing her in interviews with her honest, down to Earth personality was hypnotic.. Truly I have nothing but respect for such a talented and wonderful human being and I so enjoyed your analysis!
Dolly is way under-rated as a musician/vocalist... she really is a super talented person. Great analysis 💚😀
She has been world famous and incredibly successful for over half a century. The entire music industry and countless millions of fans appreciate everything about her. How is she under rated and by whom??? I am not sure that makes any sense.
Scott Cardinal it makes lots of sense because she’d been criticized by millions, made fun of and she didn’t deserve any of it. Her guitar skills alone are better than most men, has she been recognized for it?
Amazing!! You analyze the vocals of all of my favorite singers, Fil! I fell in love with Dolly's singing during a road trip with a friend while I was still in high school during the summer of 1976. I went to see her in concert that fall...and I could not get any of my friends to go because they did not know who she was. It wasn't too long after that when she had her cross-over hit "Here You Come Again" and starred in the movie "9 to 5." Everyone heard of her after that. Since then, I have seen her at least a dozen times in concert. She is talented, compelling and genuine...the full package. I just love her. Thanks again for analyzing her voice, Fil!!
This woman is the ultimate. Thank you Fil.
A excellent view! Fil appreciate your efforts and quality content thanks my friend! I sure joyed this one.🤝🏼✌🏼 Cheers!
Ethel Merman. The voice that had no reason to exist but mate, she had it. Please Next up!!!!!!
I could tell she was performing this song well because she almost made me feel that I'd done something wrong....
Watched and listened to her all my life.Love her and respect her for turning down the rock and roll hall of fame in such a classy way.
Applause! Your analysis is amazing. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This lady is the total package. Wow! Thanks for the analysis. You do a great job of explaining things that make me appreciate some of my favorite artists even more.
UA-cam doesn't tell you this when I leave comments, but my name is Jolene. Named after this song!! Seen her sing when i was a teenager for my birthday when I turned 14, she heard it was my bday & dedicated the song she wrote that I was named after to me. This was in the 1990 in KS @ out door concert venue! She's awesome in concert!!!!!
Yes! I did enjoy this analysis. 🌟 Dolly Parton 🌟 She is such a lovable human being. Top-notch! 'Coat of Many Colors' is one of my favourite songs.
Thank you, Fil 🖤🕊️
One of the most wonderfully unique voices I've ever heard. Love her x
Absolutely fascinating, thank you sir for this priceless talent highlight
🎶❤️💪🏻💯
She has everything; voice, looks and personality.,🌹
Since she turned down the nomination for the R & R Hall of Fame, you timed it perfectly on her profile. She's a classy lady. She wrote a masterpiece
Fascinating analysis as always Fil. I'm a bit gobsmacked tho.
I don't "follow" Dolly, but my impression has always been that she is a kind and gentle person, so I was taken aback when she said "I got that sucker home and I beat the tar out of him". 😲 Oh no Dolly!
She is a truly lovely person inside and out, and so authentic in this age of fakes.
2 things: One time Dolly was asked in an interview if she felt bad that most people think I Will Always Love You is Whitney's song and not hers, she replied, "Are you kidding? Do you know how much money that woman's made me?" lol
Miley Cyrus is her goddaughter and was on The Voice (?) and made some offhand, nasty comment about Jolene on one episode, the very next episode Miley was up singing Jolene, you just know Dolly was involved in that.
I've wondered what a true country singer's graphics would look like.
I think Fil has taught me greater appreciation for vocal and instrumental artists across the spectrum of music. And FIL has done every video with class and respect. And not to forget...FIL has a voice and guitar talent himself - he's a qualified critic. With a capital letter Qualified.
Great review Fil. Always loved Dolly as she has such a unique voice and style. A great singer and songwriter. Many thanks
This is Grand Ole Opry territory.
Liked your analysis of her vocal techniques.
I’m voting for you to isolate vocals of Steve Perry live…specifically a Midnight Special performance of “Patiently” or “Mother,Father” from Live in Houston.
Fil, thank you for another excellent analysis of an American master. I’ve heard her tell the story of the origin of this song a number of times. The way she tells it, she confronts this woman and tells her in no uncertain terms to keep her hands off her man (which sounds just like the approach a strong woman like Dolly would take in this circumstance).
What I find interesting here is, in contrast, she decided to have the woman in the story BEGGING Jolene to leave her man alone. This leaves me wondering why Dolly chose to go this way instead of having the woman in the song confront Jolene the way she did in real life.
Why? My guess is she felt there was more drama in having the song’s character feel she just doesn’t have the beauty or sex appeal to compete. It creates tension in the story; a tension that remains unresolved even at the story’s end because we never find out what Jolene chose to do.
This is just my guess, so I’d be interested in getting other viewers’ opinions
I've had the pleasure of working on her vocals, up close. Your comment "always spot on" is exactly right.
Thanks for these videos 👍
I just love Dolly! Great voice, love the stories she sings and her personality.
Man her singing is like some kind of magic spell being cast
I could be wrong but the song Jolene reminds me of an early English song sung in D minor.
If you listen to old southern mountain songs they seem to have that vide.🤠
Very nice show tonight. Interesting to learn how close her voice is to her singing voice. Never realized it before.
I’m guessing she was born to do it.
Fil I suggestion that you sing in your range, starting with the key you speak in. I talk in G. But my songs start in Dm. I think Sade sings in that same way, middle register. When I pick others songs I can mimic Carole King as those songs are in G major.
Not much of a fan Dolly's music, but I won't change the radio if she comes on, she is a fine philanthropist & gives to a variety of causes. In fact my kids read many books in elementary school made possible by her donations.
Could you do a video on Creedence Clearwater Revival please ?
And you'd be welcome to sit on my porch & talk rock history any time.
Fil, Wings of Pegasus, excellent. And, I'm getting caught up, lol. You break these down so we'll! And for an old lady like me, you're fun to look at! 👍🥰💝✌
A Classic, fascinating video, well done.
She is hands down, a full on amazing performer. It's just natural. Gifted.
Brilliant woman. Tons of class.Great vocalist, songwriter, performer, businessperson and humanitarian. Thanks Fil.
Omg I've loved Dolly parton since the 1980s. She's a legend and such an inspiration. An incredible life and career .💗
Such a wonderful voice.
Thanks, Fil; I love this analysis - and all the other ones you have done.
Oh wow, Fil, 😄🤗
Loved your impression of Michael Jackson's voice!!
Fil, you have a high speaking voice so did Robert Plant. Great analysis!
Fil, these analysis videos enhance our appreciation as listeners as we learn of the complexities that we may have previously overlooked. My suggestion for another such video would be Judy Henske's song, 'Buckeye Jim' off her 1964 album, "High Flyin' Bird." It is not only notable for Henske's dynamic emotionally ladened vibrato, but also for the 12 string guitar that accompanies her with three distinct voicings that dovetail her emotion while building to a crescendo before gradually leading us back to where we first began the journey. I would love to hear your take on this performance.
Well done, as usual. When we saw this one pop up, my wife said "he'd better be respectful", but I knew you would. To the contrary, you did a wonderful job of pointing out the technical artistry of her style, and then the simple "I just sing" of who she really is. That take makes it quite clear: Her impossibly complex style was created when there was no such thing as pitch software. It's all about singing from the heart. The recording you used was fairly painful, as it was clearly super-compressed on audio quality, but Dolly's fans know that it wasn't a fair representation. I'd like to suggest two other lesser known country artists for you to study: John Berry, and Ricky Van Shelton. Both are, IMHO, among the best country vocalists ever. They just didn't hit the pretty scale good enough to become superstars.
