I once heard Kenny say in an interview that he didn't feel he was a good singer but he did think he was a good story teller. Thanks for all of your stories, Kenny.
Kenny was my teen heart throb (yeah I'm Old). His voice is something you recognize immediately, masculine, distinct and unique. Ruby, my favorite back then, shows off the rasp you speak of. Lady, later, really shows his range. Bless him, will miss him. And Dolly, well, she is a national treasure. She can sing anything, with anybody.
@V8 fool -I never heard about that one. Elvis was a great talent too. There'd be no real reason for her to refuse to do that. In fact she was ok with him singing one of her songs but Tom Parker messed that one up with his demands and it never happened.
That key change is incredible. She nails it without any time to get her ear in. That is incredibly difficult. So impressive. I feel like Dolly is really under rated as a musician. That performance can’t help but make you smile. It’s infectious. They are both in their absolute groove.
@@cindiekelcey3578 Barry Gibb and his production team of Karl Richardson and Alby Galuten was responsible for the key change, but when they performed this themselves in 1997 for the One Night Only concert in MGM Grand, there was no key change
It was a real tragedy when the world lost Kenny Rogers. I've been listening to him in the cradle as my Mum loved The First Edition and when he turned country, my Granny played him nearly every day. Besides the Gibb flair in this song, I get the fact these two were just having so much fun singing this. I just love their video You Can't Make Old Friends. It brings me to tears knowing Kenny is gone, but it's such a great song...about them.
Barry Gibb proved his status as a musical visionary by wanting Dolly to sing this with Kenny. Talk about a perfect paring. And she was recording in the same building with Barry and Kenny were working on this!
Kenny didn't like the song, absolutely didn't want to cut it... Barry suggested a duet with Dolly and yes she just so happened to be at Middle Ear Studios! Plus you have to give credit to Albhy Galutan and Karl Richardson. The Gibbs were really musical geniuses. I honestly believe that this song would have brought the Bee Gees out of the Disco backlash had they cut it for themselves.
In fact, originally the songs wasn't meant as a song for Dolly and Kenny. The first idea was to make it a soul song for Marvin Gaye. But for whatever reason Gaye wasn't able or didn't want to record it. Then Barry got in contact with Dolly and Kenny and the Gibbs rewrote it into a country song to match Kenny and Dolly's style. A rewrite that was going to make history.
I love them so much. Separate they are great but together they are something special. You can't fake that chemistry. They seem like the type of instant friendship that you don't find often. I pray he rests in peace. 💜
My husband and I went to a Steppenwolf concert in the late 60's and Kenny was the opening act for them. We soon forgot Steppenwolf but never forgot Kenny...he saved that night!!! He sang "Ruby, don't take your love to town" and a few others, too. I heard Barry Gibb say they gave this song to Kenny and Kenny said that it ought to be sung as a duet and he knew the perfect person to sing it with him: Dolly Parton!!! Loved Kenny's raspy voice..what a sweet guy. We will miss him 💔
And that is why Islands in the Stream became alive as no. 1 country top charts the way how Dolly brought this song to life . The world just went crazy with this 2 legendary performers.! Thanks for as perfect analyses. RIP Kenny🙏💕💋
Just saw a little phone message from Dolly. Poor lady heard about the passing of her dear friend Kenny, while watching the news on television. This was such a great duet by two completely different styles of vocalization. Rest easy old friend.
My Mom at 89 has outlived all but one close friend I am sad to say COVID has kept her at arms length from grandkids too. It’s so hard but her recent Christmas Special was well received.
Kenny sang a cover of Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight" in a duet with Sheena Easton, and during a live show around this time frame he brings out Dolly to help him sing on "We've Got Tonight". During the performance towards the end where they both take turns singing the lines, instead of, "Who needs tomorrow", Dolly sneaks in a, "Who needs Sheena Easton" and Kenny has a big laugh but somewhat of a nervous one since she puts him on the spot in front of the audience. They truly were very close friends and it shines through in their work.
They had incredible chemistry. Dolly came out onto the stage like a BOSS! 2 sparks burst into flames. Just can’t help but smile while watching this performance. Kenny Rodgers was such a pro!
RIP Kenny. This duet is magical, I am swept away by the lyrics. Kenny was very talented, and it seems one has to be able to adapt to survive in the music industry.
I think this period of time was when Kenny looked sooo handsome and after the plastic surgery he was never this good looking again. Some celebrities went under the knife and it was like the Mona Lisa had been defaced. Kenny Rogers is a good example of this and another example is Priscilla Presley. Before her plastic surgery she was a GORGEOUS woman and the surgery ruined her looks. It's a shame that celebrities don't make the decision to look their age and maintain their beauty instead of trying to shave five or ten years off of the way they look and in the process totally destroy their looks. Of course, regardless of the way he looked Kenny had a great voice and I loved his songs "Coward of the County", "The Gambler" and "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town". In answer to George Jones' question of "Who's gonna fill their shoes?" I would say in regard to Kenny Rogers, NO ONE will fill his shoes. RIP, Kenny. We will be playing and loving your music for a long long time to come.
Soul mates come in different forms. The chemistry and friendship between these two is such an example. I’m so glad they did the song “You can’t make old friends”. I’m sure that’s a very bittersweet song for Dolly, as it talks about the show going on once one of them is gone. They both know that in the next life they’ll surely see each other again, as said in the song because “you can’t make old friends.” Such a divine gift and connection that these two used to share their beautiful talents and chemistry with the world. Two of my favorite people since a very little girl. RIP KENNY To echo Reba, “Dolly, he sure loved you”
Wonderful to see two performers enjoy each other so much. I’ve seen duets where two people stand on opposite sides of the stage and never even acknowledge the other one is there. Two gems here.
Wonderful commentary and analyses as usual Phil. I remember the night this aired on television and it was quite an experience. From the moment Dolly stepped onto stage, the room couldn't be quiet as everyone was exclaiming throughout the performance. It was so powerful in such a CHARMING way, and everyone was talking about it for days. I can't imagine anyone watching this without becoming elevated.
I saw Kenny and dolly parton at dollywood back in 1985. They were both great. The women went nuts when Kenny did Lady. The didn't call him the panty dropper for nothing. Thanks for sharing.
Kenny's songs have been rolling in my head all day. He and Dolly together are fantastic. The song is wonderful, but them together enjoying what they are doing is over the top. Thanks Fil.
Dolly is so sweet, giving and professional. You can tell she really really enjoyed Kenny's company, she has a much more powerful voice but she never tries to overpower Kenny.
Yeah, you can see Kenny open his eyes wide smile and step back and shake his head in respect as she really starts to belt it out. She just can't help herself 😂😂😂
RIP Kenny Rogers, a great man with a great voice, i have great memories with his song with Sheena Easton, We've Got Tonight Im not from the 80s, i heard that song in 2015, i got good memories from that year

Fil, thank you for covering so much country and western content. I know at heart you are into rock but I have huge respect for you covering Kenny and Dollly.
Wonderful analysis & tribute, Fil. Thank you. The duet "You can't make old friends" is so very appropriate a video to see now - Kenny & Dolly explain their friendship. It wasn't just some convoluted thing for the industry. Godspeed, Kenny. God bless Dolly. Stay well, Fil. 🇺🇸💜🇬🇧
One of the timeless duets ever,RIP Kenny. Sad moment for country music. Thanks Fil,hope you are coping OK in these difficult times with covid19. These videos help a lot in a dark time for so many!
I just watched Prof of Rock do a vid on this. The Gibbs wrote it years before and it got turned down and then Barry was working with Kenny and Kenny said it didn't work. A little pause and Barry said "It needs Dolly". An agent (or someone) said he just saw her in the building and they caught her leaving and asked if she'd come up. Kenny didn't know her well but she did and she got involved and . . . magic.
I just started watching this video and I love it already. When this song came out I was working at a country radio station here in flyover country, played this (a 45 on a turntable) many times. People LOVE this song.
You can tell they are having fun -- which I would guess, is a reason they perform so well. "You Can't Make Old Friends", is another one that would be great to have an analysis on. Thanks.
Is there anyone who doesn't love Dolly's and Kenny's version of this song??? It's impossible for me to hear this song without singing along at the top of my voice. Some songs just make you happy...this is one of them! 😊
Another great analysis of another great Gibb composition, performed by two other great artists. I do prefer the Bee Gees version though. I had the good fortune to be at a Halloween party that Kenny attended in Houston in the early 80s. During a casual conversation, I asked him why he switched to country music. He replied simply, I needed to make a living, and country music is where the money is for me. A very nice man and a wonderful singer. Sing me a song sweet music man. RIP Kenny
I remember this song.It was a big hit in the early 80s.It was playing on the radio almost everyday , and was a hit.Made by the Gibb Brothers.Kenny and Dolly was doing a fantastic Job with this song.It was awesome , and still is.I love IT.♥️
i saw Kenny Rogers in person when he was a member of the First Edition. Linda Ronstadt was the headliner, but she bailed, claiming to be sick. this was announced ahead of time and we were told that we could get a refund but that the concert would still be held and that The First Edition would still be performing. So my mom, aunt and I went to the show and i've gotta tell you, the First Edition put on one heck of a show, despite having very few songs at the time. they had plenty of time, so they stopped performing, encouraged fans to come right up to the stage, and they posed for photos as long as the audience wanted. i'll never forget how hard they worked to give us a good show! later we heard that Linda bailed because she felt they didn't sell enough tickets to make it worth while for her to perform.
They were magical together. I love both of them either separate or dual. This is a teachable moment for upcoming singers. He left me with some wonderful moments. God bless Kenny RIP. Side note - I am totally impressed with your knowledge of this. You have a real gift. God bless you young man.
I never saw Kenny Rogers in person, however I seen many of his television appearances over the years going back to the First Edition period. He always had great stage presence from early on. excellent analysis Kenny Rogers, great job on your homework on Kenny. thanks Kenny for all the recordings, television appearances and films you left behind to remember you by.
I saw him in...I think 78. It was the time frame when ‘Lady’ was released. He was a great singer with a very distinctive voice, and a awesome entertainer.
Kenny was a class act. I remember going to a show back in the 80's, he was married to Marianne at the time, and his son Christopher was just born. I can't recall what he was singing but at the end of the song (which was one of his beautiful ballads) a screen dropped down and on it was a picture of his wife in the hospital bed with Christopher in her arms. I remember the tears that rolled down my face. For all of us, his fans to be able to have such strong memories of him. It simply means that he was impressive and someone that we all would remember through time.
Just dropped in (to see what condition my condition was in) sure had the right feel for a song in those days. I liked it then and like it now. I was surprised when he went country but he sure made a good career move that’s for sure. I did not know he had a jazz background as well. RIP Kenny Rogers...Thanks for another excellent analysis Fil!
Thanks for sharing man! Kenny Rogers had such a great career. Dolly, well...she’s Dolly! Two gifted musicians, songwriters and performers. This is one of those moments when a great song (thanks Barry Gibb!) could be performed by multiple artists and it’s fantastic. Kenny Rogers and Lionel Richie worked together on “Lady” which became a massive hit for both! ✌🏻🙂
They had such incredible chemistry on stage! Their voices complimented each other’s with amazing ease! Just beautiful to watch and listen to! RIP Kenny! Cheers Mario! 👌👏
I remember Kenny with the First Edition on their TV show Rollin'. Kenny had long hair, an earring and played bass guitar. Thanks for the tribute and background info re the First Edition.
I love that you take the time to ❤️ our comments. I don't know if you actually find the time to read every word, but dang, it's very gracious of you to acknowledge your fans.
This was a big hit that year, always on the radio! I was 4 years out of college, single, and life was full of fun. This song captured the spirit of the time, and Dolly and Kenny spread the spirit of fun and joy so well. Kenny was adored - so gifted and so handsome and so many great hits. Thanks for another great analysis, Fil !
Thank you, Fil, for such a wonderful and insightful analysis of Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton. It was enjoyable and interesting (as your analyses usually are). Also, congratulations on 122k subscribers. Shared!
Best duets ever performed to perfection! Classic, their voice and emotion fully released here. Will forever be the best country duet of all time. It is sad to know these two won’t be on the same stage again. Two beautiful people and their great music. Rest In Peace sweet music man. Thank you for countless love songs. ❤️❤️
Wonderful to see this with your excellent comments. They were so obviously enjoying themselves and so comfortable with each other. I’ll miss him. Thanks for giving us this video!
More of the genius of Barry Gibb, not only did he write this song he produced the album... Kenny didn't like, didn't want to cut this song until Barry suggested a duet, again pure genius getting Dolly Parton... The rest is history, Robin Gibb always said the Bee Gees gave up the song that would get them back to #1 in the 80s
@@allisons3663 Barrys original demo of the song is incredible, had the Bee Gees cut the song I think it would have pulled them out of the disco backlash.
He was a man with a unique sound, a distinctive voice. Same thing with Dolly. And as you said it so well, Kenny Rogers was BIG in his day. As always, your insight into the music itself, the performers, and performances, taps heart and mind. Your channel is a bright spot in an complex, unreasonable, confusing, annoying, ify world. Tuning into your channel, spotlights how similar in appreciation of others... different others... we truly are, and I love it.
When Kenny and Dolly recorded “Islands in the Stream” in the studio, it was only the second time they ever met. Previously he appeared on her 1970s TV show.
I have seen Barry Gibb say that the song was actually meant for Ottis Redding. Thanks for your great videos. RIP KENNY. What a shock. Just on of those that would go on forever. He has IT all. Voice, looks, personality and relatability.
Dolly is the real deal. 100% God given talent, a natural. And just a genuinely likable person. After watching the Grammy awards, I really miss when stars were stars and would wow you.
You brought up interesting points about Kenny Rogers' career. The moment you said, "cross-over," that reminded me of not only when "Islands in the Stream" came out, but that it was also a cross-over hit for both Dolly Parton and Kenny--the song was playing on both the country and popular music radio stations. In the video, it was definitely obvious that both of them were relaxed with each other and I believe this was a factor in engaging the audience as they clapped to the rhythm. Fil, this was a lovely tribute to the late Kenny Rogers.
Brother Fil, I am feeling old because another one of the greatest singers/artists of my childhood has passed away. As I have said before Dolly is from a hour or so away from where I was born & Kenny is a favorite of mine from my childhood so as far I am concerned, music is dying with the autotune, etc. Spot on as usual. 👍👍 "Love Or Something Like It", "Lucille", & "I Just Checked In" are my favorite Kenny Rogers songs. I also like his duets with Dotty West. I am a racing fan and "You Picked A Fine Time To Leave Me Loose Wheel" is a standard. He was in a racing movie and I can't remember the name of the movie except for the line "No shit Dick Tracy what's your next case?" The last time I remember seeing him was in the Geico commercial.
Fil, thank you for this brilliant, respectful, informative tribute and commentary, as all of yours are. The time you spend on these videos are appreciated by so many of us. I always learn something new. Especially during a time like this, we all need to find something to bring a smile to our faces and your commentaries do that for me. Thanks again, Fil and stay safe.
Just looking at their faces you can see them thoroughly enjoying singing this Bee Gee's classic. Their voices and chemistry were phenominal.
I once heard Kenny say in an interview that he didn't feel he was a good singer but he did think he was a good story teller. Thanks for all of your stories, Kenny.
One thing I love about Dolly, she never sings a song the same way every time. They are made for each other.
This duet works so well because of the friendship and respect they share. they are having fun and the audience joins in.

Two of my most favorite artists from my childhood! The 70s and 80s were a great time to grow up! :) Rest peacefully, Kenny!
Another nice tribute to two "old-school" giants Fil! Classy as always. So sad we have Kenny Rogers no longer, but we still have his music.
Two fantastic artists. Your smile reflects my own watching this. So joyful.
They were magical together. I love both of them either separate or dual. This is a teachable moment for upcoming singers. He left me with some wonderful moments.
God bless Kenny
RIP.
Side note - I am totally impressed with your knowledge of this.
You have a real gift. God bless you young man.
The Gambler was a childhood favorite. Thanks Fil. Always great.
Thank you thank you Fil. Such a feel good song from two wonderful singers❤️
Hi Fil !!!!
Just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in ..... =^>
David Cantwell Something’s Burning
I know, it’s not the song you were referring to. 😁

He had a great and distinct voice! RIP Kenny.
Finally!!! Been waiting for someone to do this one!!! Thank you!!! 😊 R.I.P. Kenny Rogers!!! Thank you for the childhood memories!!! 😥
I loved Kenny. Such a class act always. He’ll be missed.💙
I remember Kenny with the First Edition on their TV show Rollin'. Kenny had long hair, an earring and played bass guitar. Thanks for the tribute and background info re the First Edition.
Thanks professor...
R.I.P. Mr. Rogers...
God bless you guys...

I love that you take the time to ❤️ our comments. I don't know if you actually find the time to read every word, but dang, it's very gracious of you to acknowledge your fans.
No problem!
Shared!
Far out! Written by the Bee Gees for Marvin Gaye! Wonderful learning that about this exquisite song. A perfect song for these two pros. Thanks Fil.
A great tribute to this duet. When they performed together it was a feel good moment to watch. Thanks, Fil!
The Bee Gees live version from 1997 is a slightly faster than the original studio recording, which I think benefits the pace of the song.
@@allisons3663 Barrys original demo of the song is incredible, had the Bee Gees cut the song I think it would have pulled them out of the disco backlash.
@@allisons3663 and it doesn't have the key change before the second verse.
Big Lebowski...did not know that Kenny did Checked My Condition tune while The Dude was tripping scene....thanks Fil
Heres a good one from Christchurch New Zealand Live!!!! ua-cam.com/video/BCNORo_tmKs/v-deo.html
Thanks!
Well said, D'Lou... very well said.
When Kenny and Dolly recorded “Islands in the Stream” in the studio, it was only the second time they ever met. Previously he appeared on her 1970s TV show.
And it turned into one of the greatest friendships in country music. Love the pair of them.
I saw them in concert in the 80's, enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Thanks for the analysis and memories!
Great analysis of a great performance. Fil, your appreciation and knowledge of music is an antidepressant.
I have seen Barry Gibb say that the song was actually meant for Ottis Redding. Thanks for your great videos. RIP KENNY. What a shock. Just on of those that would go on forever. He has IT all. Voice, looks, personality and relatability.
My favorite duet ever. Every time they did it, they just had so much fun.
Dolly is the real deal. 100% God given talent, a natural. And just a genuinely likable person. After watching the Grammy awards, I really miss when stars were stars and would wow you.
Yes Dolly is the real deal and a real wiz in business-- doesnt tolerate nor give BS. Read her book; you will deepen your respect her even more.
What a fantastic analysis.
Thank you.
"Love Or Something Like It", "Lucille", & "I Just Checked In" are my favorite Kenny Rogers songs.
I also like his duets with Dotty West.
I am a racing fan and "You Picked A Fine Time To Leave Me Loose Wheel" is a standard.
He was in a racing movie and I can't remember the name of the movie except for the line "No shit Dick Tracy what's your next case?"
The last time I remember seeing him was in the Geico commercial.
Six Pack was the movie. Saw it in a drive-in.
@@leeharcus7001
Yes that was the name of the movie. We still have a drive-in in my home town. It's about 1/2 mile from my house.
Thank you for this special Kenny & Dolly video. Love their duets and he will always have a special place in my music songbook.
Lovely and fitting analysis at just the right time. They made it look so easy and so do you. Thanks!
I love the smile you get on your face when you are listening to fabulous music. Stunning.
Always, I sense your appreciation of all the musical talent that has gone before you. Thank you.
