Still, almost 60 years later, her voice reigns supreme.
Music changed so much here in the US in the 60's, especially after JFK was shot. Rock and roll was really just starting, along with the help of the British Invasion (as it was called here). Such a tragic loss.

I love these older singers. They truly had talent, there was no faking it. They were on or not. Today’s artists don’t realize that auto tuning takes the emotion out of the music. It may be spot on but it’s dead. We lost her too soon , imagine the music she could have given us.
The artists before 1970-80 had to get the music right. There was no computer to correct the plethora of errors. The greats are natural talent that can't be faked. Except Fil, of course. He is on point !!!
When I had heard she was country I was hesitant as a kid to listen. She’s wow factor though. She’s her own timeless genre in a way. Her songs were on country and pop. Shes a singer that gets to you. Her close to crying and when she looks away it was a masterpiece. I’m so glad she decided to record it
Cline is the queen of bending and sliding (glissando in) the intonation for emotional effect. And she was literally a genius at it. It's notoriously hard to teach this - it's simply intuitive. And Cline, like no one else in the world, understood how leaning into and out of a harmony meant something emotional to the listener. This is super duper complex stuff. Humans lean into harmony. And no one understood the harmony better than Patsy Cline.

Have only heard a dozen or so PC tracks over 50 years. I have always thought she sounded very precise and in control, but in a Human warmth, rather than a mechanical way. Many thanks Fil for featuring this singer and confirming that she was auto tuned by her own talent.
You can't go wrong with Patsy Cline vocals. "Walkin After Midnight" "She Got You" "I Fall to Pieces" "Crazy" are just a few songs she recorded that I like. Thanks Fil, for pointing out why Patsy was so good as she was.
This is one of the best country voices around. Patsy had dramatic volume control, stretched-note effects, sobs, pauses & unique ways of holding back, then bursting into full-throated phrases. Patsy had so many great hits. She was only 31 when she died in a plane crash in 1963. Jessica Lange starred in the movie about Patsy's life called "Sweet Dreams" in 1985.
I've always thought of Patsy's voice as hauntingly beautiful. She does pull you right in, and makes you believe with her singing, she has gone through that emotional experience...and is pouring her heart out.

She died not far from where I live (I live in Tennessee, so being near where some county singer or other lived or died isn't unusual!)...She was just brilliant. I was late to the party! I always loved this song but was dismissive of anything 'Country'. I soon got over my teen prejudice and grew to appreciate many Country artists. As I matured I realized Patsy Cline transcended any artistic label. I read once that Patsy's 1961 version of the Willie Nelson song, Crazy, was the most requested song on jukeboxes.
The “Cry tone “ you speak of is what Makes Pasty the hardest Singer to replicate. Because it is something that is unique unto her. That is also why she was so amazingly loved by even people who weren’t really country music fans. She has a background in bluegrass as well and that is where you will hear that “Cry tone” along with a yodel sound . Those things combined is her unique sound. I am a massive pastys fan , my dad was a massive Patsy fan . Lol I grew up listening to her so much , that when I hear anyone try to sing her songs , even very well talented singers in their own right .. that will never come close , I still hear all the notes they can not hit correctly or even deliver it with that same passion. She is one of those artists, that every other singer should just never try to replicate or think they can improve upon it because it is already perfection and you can’t improve perfection !
I love Patsy still. Sliding a needle onto an album, pushing a tape in the player or a cd in the player, I've spent hours with her, singing. And to this day I still sing with her. I'm 63. My mom played her records, along with Gentlman Jim or Margaret Whiting or Ella Fitzgerald. Ray Price's Touch My Heart is one my everlasting Favorites. I met him and he wanted to know how I knew who he was lol. I told him my Mom played Ray Price growing up. He said so sing me some of your favorite song, and so I let go with touch my heart. I cant sing, but he was impressed that I knew the song. I got great tips that night lol
I live in Patsy's hometown in Winchester Virginia her childhood home is just a couple blocks from me, My dad "DUCK" Brawner, played backup Steel Guitar for Patsy in 1959 and her voice is still haunting to this day
My husband’s aunt went to high school with Patsy and still lives in Winchester. She may have known your dad because it seems like she knows everyone in Winchester. 😊
I don't think that anyone could really match Patsy's plaintive vulnerability. Roy Orbison and Linda Ronstadt have come close, but for me, Patsy was the queen of mournful wistfulness. 👑 Thanks, Fil! 💖🤘

It's astonishing, I would always buy any music that listed her as either a duet (or trio!) Even if she just contributed backing vocals.
And she was a much better role model .you didn't hear ugly about her or see her half naked. Seems it was more about the music and not how sexual the singer can emote as per recent decades. I can seriously tell how much a lack of any sort of music classes in the school system is affecting the culture of amerika as is instant riches. Integrity be damned.
Goosebumps. I come from a time when, in this country, we had no television to view as well as hear all the wonderful music that was being released so prolifically. Fortunately, we had access to AM and shortwave radio that we could receive overseas stations on (the old valve receivers at first then the wonderful portable transistor radios) which we often did late into the night because the signal was rarely there while the Sun was up. We did have a few local stations nearby but they were controlled by those who thought our music was harming our tender minds so we missed out if we didn't use the UK and US skips, BBC and Voice Of America were the clearest. Sometimes we actually got to see glimpses of a few of our music heroes on the black & white "Movietone News" reels that somehow managed to dodge the censors. That was rather a long winded way of thanking you and letting you know how much your channel is appreciated Fil.

I want to agree with the person who suggested “Faded Love”. Patsy’s vocal is in incredible, the sob in her voice at the end is heartbreaking. But, my goodness, her band: she has Pig Robbins on piano, Floyd Cramer on organ, Harold Bradley on bass. It is the lovely, immaculate acoustic guitar runs played by Randy Hughes that add such interest to the recording. Well worth a listen, even a comparison with Bob Wills Texas Swing version and Patsy taking his signature song and putting her stamp on it. P
Patsy Cline has THE number one played juke box song of all time. Bigger than Elvis, the Beatles, Frank Sinatra. You explained that she connected with our most basic reflexes, a babies cry. I just saw a video about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, THE Mother of Rock and Roll. The Jordanaires agreed to do a tour with her in the 1950s. She booked the tour and didn't say that they were white. And they travelled on her tour bus, since she was sick of not being able to stay in most hotels. They really were courageous to do that at the time. They would go into restaurants and order a meal for the Blacks and take them back to the bus so they would be able to eat the same food. Often Blacks received lower quality food. Congratulations to the Jordanaires, and it's great they sang also for Patsy. Now that you've done Patsy, you might use kd Lang on the software? She formed a band called the Recliners in hommage. Hopefully not Hallelujah, but if you do I will listen again to the song. I'm like Leonard Cohen with that song.

Brings tears to my eyes...when I hear certain voices it touches my heart and I cry. When they first came out with the competition talent show, I could tell the best vocals when the tears flowed. Patsy was amazing.

Patsy Cline is a beautiful soul with a beautiful voice. Sad and sentimental is this song I Fall to Pieces. Singing can e a lot like acting when coming across with feel(meaning). It's channeling those emotions. It's envisioning what it's like to fall to pieces. Another great analysis Fil. You know how to accentuate the artist.
Among the tiny moments in music that draw my attention every time I hear them are Patsy's downward slide of the word 'to' at 1:38 in your video. For me she packs all of the emotion in the song into that short collapse. I really like seeing a graphical representation of it. Thank you for these videos!
I love this! Singers like Patsy are easy to mimic but almost impossible to match. One can try, but the vocal quality, variation, emotional richness and just what’s happening in her throat is so complex and varied that it’s pretty difficult to even get close. She reminds me very much of Adele in that way. I love hearing the isolated vocals. listening to her with musical accompaniment one can miss just how magical her voice is. The music and background vocals can obscure the shifts in tone, the breath, and the fluctuations that make her voice so unique. I spent lots of time listening to her greatest hits album with headphones, in the sauna at the gym, when everyone would leave and I would be alone I would sing along to see if I could match her. It was a great vocal lesson. I recommend anyone wanting to learn how to sing to listen and try to duplicate her sound.

I am originally from the Southeastern part of the U.S. so country music was part of my upbringing! Seeing you smile as you are listening to her makes me so happy. Magnificent. I grew up listening to that voice and it still stops me in my tracks every time. I've even had the honor of playing guitar for four local productions of a show featuring her songs. The last time around, everyone - including a few people who got to see the original in person - told our singer than when she opened her mouth they were no longer watching a show about Patsy. They were watching Patsy. Talk about grown men crying. Speaking of which, please listen to the very end of Faded Love. Thank you for this, Fil.
Ditto, There are only a handful of musicians that when I hear them I stop whatever I was doing, shoosh everyone around and listen. Recognizing that she was able to move me so deeply I have tried to figure out just what is so different and I can't pick out exactly what it is. There's a lot that have control, accuracy etc plenty with technical vocal skill. The explanation is elusive. My dad who was a guitarist once challenged me to define what is music? After coming back to him over weeks with yet another expanded definition, he could still offer yet another important aspect I had left out. Once you start that quest you never stop polishing the definition. Great music is about manipulating emotions. What makes great music is not what they get right, it is about what they get wrong, but just right.

Patsy Kline had the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. From the very moment I hear her voice I feel the chills run through my body. Very interesting analysis Fil on one of the most iconic country artists of all times.
Patsy and Jo Stafford were always 2 of my favorite female vocalists. I remain amazed at how many memorable songs Patsy did in her short career before such an untimely death. As always, Fil, you make me appreciate their skill and talent even more.
Lovely choices! Me too. Both of them have such richly emotional voices. Patsy had exquisite phrasing, too, actually both of them did, and astonishing breath control too, and perfect pitch. It's pure pleasure listening to them both. Jo to me is the ultimate 1940s "girl singer" and Patsy, the ultimate country-pop torch song artist. They both had a great sense of rhythm but could kill you with a perfect heartbreak ballad. They both had that indescribable "teardrop" in their voices, that innate touch of sweet sadness that was just inherent in their sound. Kind, beautiful and intelligent women, too. Jo isn't as well remembered as she should be, though. Check out her recording of "Haunted Heart"--pure 1940s dark romance.
A really great one Fil. I remember being a young kid hearing Patsy and getting a chill. As I listen right now, I have that chill. I feel the country vibe more in the second version. But I still get that chill. It's interesting that Loretta Lynn was a great friend of Patsy's. And Loretta' voice was pure country, but her younger sister Crystal Gayle has a voice similar to Patsy's. I really appreciate your analysis. You got me hooked on this, it might be hard for me to go back to your guitar analysis. LOL. You rock.
Thanx Fil for honoring Patsy. I grew up near Winchester and it was a small country town where people were proud to say Winchester was the home of Patsy. She came from humble beginnings, but touched a lot of lives. My parents are buried in the same cemetary and were proud to be there with Patsy. May they rest in peace. The last time I was in Winchester, I drove up Kent street.
Her accuracy (pitch-wise) makes me think she must have had absolute pitch ... Especially if she was self-taught. Sometimes I find 'pitch perfect' vocals to be a bit boring but Patsy's voice is anything but!

She had a perfect way of sliding up to a note just slightly, and then using vibrato along with a push of air making the note louder. Hard to explain but makes her voice unmistakable! Hi Fil! In my kitchen on the wall I have a huge Patsy Cline picture! I have her photo on my fireplace! I adore her! My daughter drove me to Nashville just to visit her museum! Her voice is one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard! Absolutely stunning! She also seems like someone I would have liked to hang out with…funny, and warm! ✌️

To the best of my knowledge, Fil has yet to cover the truly great non-English speaking talent out there, with the sole exception of BTS(?). He has covered classical opera and crossover vocalists, but much/most of that genre is non-English. Shirley Yamaguchi, Misora Hibari (IMHO the most important and influential popular singer in history.), Kyu Sakamoto, and Teresa Teng and just a few of the many E. Asian vocal stars that deserve western attention. I don't think Fil will or needs to cover them as his channel is aimed at English speakers, mainly. Just as a maybe fyi.....
Patsy was the first cassette ever bought for me when I was 8 years old. I spent every night and all my free time listening to every amazing note she sang and when she would speak ( in her trans- continental accent) on “ Live @the Opry it was like she was talking directly to me … she was incredible and I still listen to her everyday now that I’m a “ grown up”…lol

A very interesting analysis of an incredible talent. Like any great singer, the tuning of the chords was so instinctively acute that the effort and skill get ignored until someone like you, Fil, takes it apart so the composite parts can be heard.
I've heard so many times what an incredible live performer Patsy was, and you really see it here. So much soul, such intelligence and spark and passion. I love the directness of her gaze, the way she connects with her audience even whilst gazing into a camera. Phenomenal singer and a truly remarkable human being. She had such a huge, bright spirit, such warmth and lust for life, that her early death is just tragic beyond words. I think she would be so touched by your analysis of her singing. I know she put a tremendous amount of thought and effort into everything she did.

Fil there's a hell of a difference between Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Dottie West, and June Carter. See they were born with a Natural talent. One that no damned auto tuners can ever copy. Singers like that come along maybe once in a blue moon. That's why even today so long after her passing, Patsy is STILL sellling CDs and records now that vinyl is coming back.
stop with the "gift" - she had some natural ability, but then she WORKED at her craft. She honed it, stretched it, and she earned where her voice control was with dedication, drive, and passion for her singing. She just makes it look easy. Patsy is one of my all-time favs. I was only 3 when she died, but her music was played in my house the whole time I was growing up, and I still listen to her today. You have really helped me understand why I can appreciate many singers in the past 30 years, but am rarely ever moved or touched as much by their performances as those from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. I used to think it was just nostalgia, and that is probably part of it, but now I know that there are technical reasons for feeling this way and that it wasn’t just my imagination! I'm older than Patsy was when she died which is terrifying and surreal. To me she's, if not the best, one of the best female vocalists of all time.

She died not far from where I live (I live in Tennessee, so being near where some county singer or other lived or died isn't unusual!)...She was just brilliant. I hate that country music has become nothing more than country pop/rap crap because PATSY is what it should sound like. Very good job, Fil.

The “Cry tone “ you speak of is what Makes Pasty the hardest Singer to replicate.
Because it is something that is unique unto her. That is also why she was so amazingly loved by even people who weren’t really country music fans. She has a background in bluegrass as well and that is where you will hear that “Cry tone” along with a yodel sound . Those things combined is her unique sound. I am a massive pastys fan , my dad was a massive Patsy fan . Lol I grew up listening to her so much , that when I hear anyone try to sing her songs , even very well talented singers in their own right .. that will never come close , I still hear all the notes they can not hit correctly or even deliver it with that same passion. She is one of those artists, that every other singer should just never try to replicate or think they can improve upon it because it is already perfection and you can’t improve perfection !

I love Patsy still. Sliding a needle onto an album, pushing a tape in the player or a cd in the player, I've spent hours with her, singing. And to this day I still sing with her. I'm 63. My mom played her records, along with Gentlman Jim or Margaret Whiting or Ella Fitzgerald. Ray Price's Touch My Heart is one my everlasting Favorites. I met him and he wanted to know how I knew who he was lol. I told him my Mom played Ray Price growing up. He said so sing me some of your favorite song, and so I let go with touch my heart. I cant sing, but he was impressed that I knew the song. I got great tips that night lol

I live in Patsy's hometown in Winchester Virginia her childhood home is just a couple blocks from me, My dad "DUCK" Brawner, played backup Steel Guitar for Patsy in 1959 and her voice is still haunting to this day

Goosebumps. I come from a time when, in this country, we had no television to view as well as hear all the wonderful music that was being released so prolifically. Fortunately, we had access to AM and shortwave radio that we could receive overseas stations on (the old valve receivers at first then the wonderful portable transistor radios) which we often did late into the night because the signal was rarely there while the Sun was up. We did have a few local stations nearby but they were controlled by those who thought our music was harming our tender minds so we missed out if we didn't use the UK and US skips, BBC and Voice Of America were the clearest. Sometimes we actually got to see glimpses of a few of our music heroes on the black & white "Movietone News" reels that somehow managed to dodge the censors. That was rather a long winded way of thanking you and letting you know how much your channel is appreciated Fil.
She was truly a uniquely talented singer, explaining why she is still so popular nearly 60 years after her tragic passing. Thank you for explaining why she was such a joy to listen to.

I want to agree with the person who suggested “Faded Love”. Patsy’s vocal is in incredible, the sob in her voice at the end is heartbreaking. But, my goodness, her band: she has Pig Robbins on piano, Floyd Cramer on organ, Harold Bradley on bass. It is the lovely, immaculate acoustic guitar runs played by Randy Hughes that add such interest to the recording. Well worth a listen, even a comparison with Bob Wills Texas Swing version and Patsy taking his signature song and putting her stamp on it.

Patsy Cline has THE number one played juke box song of all time. Bigger than Elvis, the Beatles, Frank Sinatra. You explained that she connected with our most basic reflexes, a babies cry.
I just saw a video about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, THE Mother of Rock and Roll. The Jordanaires agreed to do a tour with her in the 1950s. She booked the tour and didn't say that they were white. And they travelled on her tour bus, since she was sick of not being able to stay in most hotels. They really were courageous to do that at the time. They would go into restaurants and order a meal for the Blacks and take them back to the bus so they would be able to eat the same food. Often Blacks received lower quality food. Congratulations to the Jordanaires, and it's great they sang also for Patsy.
Now that you've done Patsy, you might use kd Lang on the software? She formed a band called the Recliners in hommage. Hopefully not Hallelujah, but if you do I will listen again to the song. I'm like Leonard Cohen with that song.

No wonder Patsy Cline was such an incredible singer. I used to think is she sang with so emotional that you feel how she feels with a drop of a tear in her voice. She is unbelievable singer! Brings tears to my eyes...when I hear certain voices it touches my heart and I cry. When they first came out with the competition talent show, I could tell the best vocals when the tears flowed. Patsy was amazing.
The warmth and depth of her Voice is wonderful. None of that robotic Speak and Spell nasty sound.
Her voice always makes my hair stand on end and I stop what I am doing to listen. 50 years later I am as enthralled with her now as when I was a child.

Patsy Cline is a beautiful soul with a beautiful voice. Sad and sentimental is this song I Fall to Pieces. Singing can e a lot like acting when coming across with feel(meaning). It's channeling those emotions. It's envisioning what it's like to fall to pieces.

Among the tiny moments in music that draw my attention every time I hear them are Patsy's downward slide of the word 'to' at 1:38 in your video. For me she packs all of the emotion in the song into that short collapse. I really like seeing a graphical representation of it. Thank you for these videos!

I love this! Singers like Patsy are easy to mimic but almost impossible to match. One can try, but the vocal quality, variation, emotional richness and just what’s happening in her throat is so complex and varied that it’s pretty difficult to even get close. She reminds me very much of Adele in that way. I love hearing the isolated vocals. listening to her with musical accompaniment one can miss just how magical her voice is. The music and background vocals can obscure the shifts in tone, the breath, and the fluctuations that make her voice so unique. I spent lots of time listening to her greatest hits album with headphones, in the sauna at the gym, when everyone would leave and I would be alone I would sing along to see if I could match her. It was a great vocal lesson. I recommend anyone wanting to learn how to sing to listen and try to duplicate her sound.

Magnificent. I grew up listening to that voice and it still stops me in my tracks every time. I've even had the honor of playing guitar for four local productions of a show featuring her songs. The last time around, everyone - including a few people who got to see the original in person - told our singer than when she opened her mouth they were no longer watching a show about Patsy. They were watching Patsy. Talk about grown men crying. Speaking of which, please listen to the very end of Faded Love. Thank you for this, Fil.
Ditto, There are only a handful of musicians that when I hear them I stop whatever I was doing, shoosh everyone around and listen. Recognizing that she was able to move me so deeply I have tried to figure out just what is so different and I can't pick out exactly what it is. There's a lot that have control, accuracy etc plenty with technical vocal skill. The explanation is elusive.
My dad who was a guitarist once challenged me to define what is music? After coming back to him over weeks with yet another expanded definition, he could still offer yet another important aspect I had left out. Once you start that quest you never stop polishing the definition. Great music is about manipulating emotions. What makes great music is not what they get right, it is about what they get wrong, but just right.

Patsy and Jo Stafford were always 2 of my favorite female vocalists. I remain amazed at how many memorable songs Patsy did in her short career before such an untimely death. As always, Fil, you make me appreciate their skill and talent even more.

Lovely choices! Me too. Both of them have such richly emotional voices. Patsy had exquisite phrasing, too, actually both of them did, and astonishing breath control too, and perfect pitch. It's pure pleasure listening to them both. Jo to me is the ultimate 1940s "girl singer" and Patsy, the ultimate country-pop torch song artist. They both had a great sense of rhythm but could kill you with a perfect heartbreak ballad. They both had that indescribable "teardrop" in their voices, that innate touch of sweet sadness that was just inherent in their sound. Kind, beautiful and intelligent women, too. Jo isn't as well remembered as she should be, though. Check out her recording of "Haunted Heart"--pure 1940s dark romance.

A really great one Fil. I remember being a young kid hearing Patsy and getting a chill. As I listen right now, I have that chill. I feel the country vibe more in the second version. But I still get that chill. It's interesting that Loretta Lynn was a great friend of Patsy's. And Loretta' voice was pure country, but her younger sister Crystal Gayle has a voice similar to Patsy's. I really appreciate your analysis. You got me hooked on this, it might be hard for me to go back to your guitar analysis. LOL. You rock.
Thanx Fil for honoring Patsy. I grew up near Winchester and it was a small country town where people were proud to say Winchester was the home of Patsy. She came from humble beginnings, but touched a lot of lives. My parents are buried in the same cemetary and were proud to be there with Patsy. May they rest in peace. The last time I was in Winchester, I drove up Kent street.
Her accuracy (pitch-wise) makes me think she must have had absolute pitch ... Especially if she was self-taught. Sometimes I find 'pitch perfect' vocals to be a bit boring but Patsy's voice is anything but!

It’s amazing to see the actual charting of her notes like this. She had a perfect way of sliding up to a note just slightly, and then using vibrato along with a push of air making the note louder. Hard to explain but makes her voice unmistakable! I think it’s what you’re describing as a “cry.” 16:17

To the best of my knowledge, Fil has yet to cover the truly great non-English speaking talent out there, with the sole exception of BTS(?). He has covered classical opera and crossover vocalists, but much/most of that genre is non-English. Shirley Yamaguchi, Misora Hibari (IMHO the most important and influential popular singer in history.), Kyu Sakamoto, and Teresa Teng and just a few of the many E. Asian vocal stars that deserve western attention. I don't think Fil will or needs to cover them as his channel is aimed at English speakers, mainly. Just as a maybe fyi.....

Patsy was the first cassette ever bought for me when I was 8 years old. I spent every night and all my free time listening to every amazing note she sang and when she would speak ( in her trans- continental accent) on “ Live @the Opry it was like she was talking directly to me … she was incredible and I still listen to her everyday now that I’m a “ grown up”…lol

She had such a huge, bright spirit, such warmth and lust for life, that her early death is just tragic beyond words. I think she would be so touched by your analysis of her singing. Fil there's a hell of a difference between Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Dottie West, and June Carter. See they were born with a Natural talent. One that no damned auto tuners can ever copy. Singers like that come along maybe once in a blue moon. That's why even today so long after her passing, Patsy is STILL sellling CDs and records now that vinyl is coming back.

She honed it, stretched it, and she earned where her voice control was with dedication, drive, and passion for her singing. She just makes it look easy. Patsy is one of my all-time favs. I was only 3 when she died, but her music was played in my house the whole time I was growing up, and I still listen to her today. You have really helped me understand why I can appreciate many singers in the past 30 years, but am rarely ever moved or touched as much by their performances as those from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. I used to think it was just nostalgia, and that is probably part of it, but now I know that there are technical reasons for feeling this way and that it wasn’t just my imagination! Again, thank you so much for this video and your other videos!
