    Rolling Stone reports Simon later heard Elvis’ “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” He felt the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s interpretation of the track was dramatic. “But so was the song,” he added. “When I first heard Elvis perform ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ it was unbelievable. I thought to myself, ‘How the hell can I compete with that?'”

    • @Deborahtunes
      @Deborahtunes 2 роки тому +31

      Elvis's voice is naturally dramatic. So performing a song like this, makes the song more powerful than it was before. I like both versions. Presley's voice though, brings it to another level for me...

    • @Galantski
      @Galantski 2 роки тому +16

      Vocally, Simon couldn't compete with Presley, however, fortunately, Garfunkel was the main singer on the S&G single, and even better, the _only_ singer on the live video Fil recently posted. This is the first I heard Elvis's version, and, yes, I can see where Paul might say something along those lines, though I would also point out that he and Art had a major falling out, and they never have totally reconciled, so I don't know how much of his praise of the King's rendition is genuine and how much a subtle jab at Garfunkel.
      It doesn't matter which it is, because Elvis's is a truly great performance. As far as I'm concerned, Art's solo is my go-to version, and I think he more or less "owns" the song, though that may be much an associative response than anything. Maybe say he and Elvis are co-owners. It's instructive to note that Presley's arrangement is more or less identical with Simon & Garfunkel's, and that makes a lot of sense given that it is a Gospel styling, and Elvis was steeped in Gospel as much as he was R&B.

      It shows thatYou and millions like you re not professional & never .......
      Just talent itself without vocal practices & secret private lessons, without step by step guide and connections, sound engineers, also stage acting ,also speaking and singing with dynamics , vocal higher range requirements need to be furbishing more and more on the techniques, until he/becomes barely somehow famous . Afterwards is the marketing marketers & connectors going
      for advertising alive from one continent to another. Also I am aware about auto tunes & other electronic devices with vibrato effects , thin or thick tremble voice only that helps only but if the singer goes *off key* then the equipment can't help.
      Regular sheepled people, everyday people think that and believe that only but only the talent alone made him her famous to be heard on radio, TV disk cassettes, CD , D.V.D.
      Holy Cow 🐄!
      Talent is only for starting purposely.

The Colonel had him doing 7 shows a week to pay the Colonels massive gambling debt , when he had glaucoma, a painful genetic bowel condition & a prescription pill addiction. If you read the 3 bodyguard's book Elvis: What Happened, there's an awful scene where his Dr was trying to rouse a semi conscious Elvis with ice water & the Colonel just barks "get him on stage"& leaves the room with not a shred of concern.

      @@MBrady1970 Yes he was underrated as a vocalist; no, not by his fans and peers in the music industry, but by the media and institutions like the Recording Academy et al. How many Grammys did Elvis win? Answer: One, for his "How Great Thou Art" gospel album! And therein lies the reason, considering the times. Elvis was not respected as an 'artist or vocalist' by the 'establishments'. Sure, his fans adored him and bought his records by the millions, and sure, his fellow artists knew and appreciated his immense vocal talent, but he didn't get those props from the media, some radio stations, parents, the religious communities, and the Recording Industry. Elvis was first and foremost to them a problem to society; his vocal ability was the last thing they saw or heard. While Sinatra was being dubbed with nicknames like "The Voice," Elvis was dubbed "The Pelvis." That's one of the reasons he appeared on Sinatra's show, to try and change that image and gain respect as a vocalist and artist. So you can say that my statement that "Elvis was underrated as a vocalist" is "ridiculous" all you want, but it's a fact! And I lived through those times to know.

    I hate it when even another singer covers an Elvis song, even though Elvis' songs were almost all covers themselves... or at least none were written by him. But if a song is an 'Elvis song', I think it needs to be left alone. Don't cover it, because nobody will ever be able to improve upon it.
    This particular song is, of course, a cover by Elvis. So you can't count it as an 'Elvis song', but if I remember correctly, Paul Simon (or maybe it was Art Garfunkel... or both) were just blown away by Elvis' rendition and jokingly wondered how they could ever sing it again after hearing his version.
    All of that said, I totally agree, never ever auto-tune Elvis. Perfection can't be improved upon, it can only be degraded and that's all that auto-tune would do, degrade perfection.

    Thanks FIL for your comments regarding auto tuning Elvis's music. WHAT??? Are they serious?? As you know music is art, and to mess with a voice so unique and beautiful would be a crime. Nothing, and I mean nothing could improve on the perfection that was Elvis's voice. Time to get the music police to stop this calamity. Elvis's manager made some changes to one of Elvis's recordings and when Elvis heard it while driving, he stopped his car and had a blue fit. I believe Elvis would turn over in his grave if this BS was done to his music. NO. NO and NO would be my response to this crap!!!

    I agree with you 100%! The idea that some anonymous person would dare to put AutoTune on Elvis--- or any other great singer of the past---- infuriates me. Would they do this to the Beatles or the Beach Boys? The Four Freshmen? Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan? Maria Callas and Luciano Pavarotti? I could go on all day with the most fantastic and wonderful singers in music history, whose fame and worldwide popularity is based on the totally pure sound of their natural human voices. If they do this without telling people, then it's nothing less than a criminal fraud.

      A big influence on Elvis's vocal style was the Blues - a style which often uses pitch deviation as a means of expression. To erase that aspect from his performance through pitch correction manipulation would essentially alter his style into something else - something less "Elvis".

No one will ever touch his catalogue too with such a range of music he performed. Your analysis shows, not only with the way phones are controlling our lives, that perfection in everything is wanted by so many.
