  • In this video I show you how to successfully propagate a maranta plant and make your pot more full. Maranta plants are really easy to propagate and it's an easy way to fill out the pot if you have bare spots! I show you from start to finish how to propagate, root and add back into the pot!
    I'm still learning my new camera and editing software so the footage and audio may be off until I can practice and improve! :)

    I find that my success ratio is 100% if, instead of transplanting the water-rooted cuttings straight into the large pot with the mother plant, I take them from water into a small pot of soil that I can keep moist, and once they have grown soil roots and new growth is developing at a good rate, THEN I transplant them around the mother plant to fill out the larger pot. This way, I don't have to worry if I'm overwatering the established plant in favor of keeping the rooted cuttings moist enough, or if on the contrary, I'm letting the cuttings dry too much and die, trying to not rot the original plant.

    Well done video for beginners. My mother maranta is about 20 years old and 4 feet wide. This is the best method I've found for propagating and filling in OR making gifts for other plant lovers. My "mother" survived a move from MA to TX in November, riding in an unheated car we towed! Absolutely my favorite, don't tell her cousins.

    Just wondering, is it ok to pot different maranta varieties together in 1 pot? I love the different types of marantas and would love them in 1 pot but I don’t really see people doing it. I wonder if there might be a reason to this?

      You can plant two or more marantas together with no problem. You could even put other plants together with no problem. Just make sure, that the plants you choose for this have the same care requirements, when it comes to light, water, humidity and fertilizer, since they share one pot und thus their conditions and care :3 happy growing ♡

    Excellent video, the close shots really brought home the concepts you were teaching Is the water you use on your plants direct from your tap or do you prep it in some way? My guess is your water is from a community or municipal water system that puts additives in the water they supply. I am fortunate to have unconditioned well water at my house so I have no concerns about chlorine or fluoride adversely impacting my plants. Your maranta are very beautiful. My one maranta now looks lonely so I’ll have to start propagating. Excellent video and yes please do a care video as well. Thanks.

    • @plantsbymelissa
      @plantsbymelissa  2 роки тому +3

      Thank you so much! ☺️ I just use my city tap water for my water propagations and don’t use anything in it :) sometimes I change the water out or I will just add to it to fill it back up. I will water with distilled most of the time when I water my marantas. If I am out I use some tap water that I leave out overnight so some of the chlorine can evaporate 😁

    Melissa! I'm back to say that I took cuttings (for the first time) of a RED Maranta, and I'm shocked to see that it had roots after only 4 days in water! I had never seen a plant root that fast. They are not nubs, either, they are bona fide roots from 0.50 to 0.75 of an inch. Granted, I had these on a seedling heated mat that likely sped up the process, but still---I have a bunch many vessels full of other cuttings on the same mat, and none has gone this fast. What a great feeling!
