just a quick tip: if you see yellowing leaf, leave it until it turn completely dry and brown. While leafs are drying, the plant is taking back the water and minerals from them, so it's good, leave it :)
Ultimately house plants should make us happy though, so if the dying leaf is bothering you and the plant is healthy, large, and well fertilized its not going to make much of a difference to the plant
My neighbor gave me some Maranta Rabbit Track water propagations and I finally got the courage to pot them up a few weeks ago. Got so much new growth and it turns out my plant is variegated!!! Love prayer plants!🌱
My mom gave me a maranta when I was like 16 to help get my mind of things cause I was going through so much stuff at the time. I killed it from neglect though and now that I’m 23 I miss that plant and wish I could have kept it alive , I often think about it 🥹
My red maranta was looking good for over 6 months then started to get dry tips. I decided to cut all those leafs off 3 months ago and no dry tips since then so I believe it was some parasite. I also keep my plant soil moist but it has good drainage and I live in a dry climate and it works for me
I just bought my first maranta - it’s a lemon lime. I transplanted it into ceramic and it currently has 3 flowers! Keeping up humidity over the winter might be difficult, but if it does well I will want to buy more.
Your information is very thorough and informative! I've taken a liking by getting my first Lemon Lime, but I can tell she's giving me a finicky diva response, so I'm doing the best I can since I'd love for her to survive and thrive. Definitely making me want a Rabbit's Foot, though! I should have started with that, I feel. Especially since I haven't worked with Marantas before. I'm very interested in the soil mix you mentioned for Marantas. May I ask what ratio of each you'd recommend? I live in Texas and have definitely invested with a humidifier, haha.
I increased the lighting on my Maranta Rabbit Track and decreased water and it has grown wonderfully. Just recently, it flowered. The only problem I have with this plant is that as it grows, the offshoots stems are thin and viney-ish.
I was inspired by your video on propagating marantas and am rooting my red maranta. Have some roots starting...yay! 🌿 Thanks for all your videos. Learning a bunch !!!
Loved this and your prop video for marantas - I only have a red one but REALLY want the rabbit tracks one, she is beautiful. For sure going to prop my red guy to get him fluffy!
I went to my big box store today and found a Variegated Maranta!!! I immediately thought of you. Your videos and beautiful plants made me want one. Now let’s see if I can keep it alive. I feel so blessed to have found one! 🥹
I overwater as well. I lost a maranta and the second one I got didn’t do well either. Last fall it had one and 1/2 leaves left. I put it in a small terracotta pot and pretty much left it alone cuz I had already down potted and it still was dying. But after a couple months, I saw new growth. Now. Six months or so later, it has all news leaves. The original died off but before it died it put out 5 leaves. And today two more are on it. It is in terra cotta. I feel much more confident since it lived. I water a bit on top but mostly bottom water it. Seems odd to do that to terra cotta but it must soak up enough moisture to keep the plant happy. It’s small but very healthy. I’m happy. I foresee it getting big and I plan on filling it propagations as well. Yea!
With my red marantas, I'm pretty sure brown tips always means spider mites, even if you don't see any. My initial plant was fine for a year including winter drafts. But maybe the plant fights the bugs better without tap water. Have you tried cross-pollinating your marantas? (I self pollinated mine with a toothpick scoop, it wasn't easy...)
My two Marantas are much happier now that heating season here in New Hampshire is finally over so I’m not using our wood stove. Wood heat is very dry so I can see a humidifier in my future. I light misted my marantas during winter to help with humidity. Thanks to your excellent instruction I am going to start propagating my plants and that should be fun and interesting.
Very pretty. I struggle with Maranta’s. My mother in law asked for me to find her one, because she couldn’t find one. So I bought her one off Etsy. Her plant thrived and the one I bought for myself died. My Mother in law died this past November and now I have her Maranta’s, it was doing well. We had a few days over 85 degrees and I didn’t have a humidifier 😭 so its struggling. Can you recommend a type of a humidifier 🤷🏽♀️
They sell some on Amazon. I find that if you put them near the sink or bathroom they do well because of the humidity. Im sorry about your mother in law.
Thank you. I took a clipping from her plant and so far it has survived. However the “Mama” plant that My Mother in law was growing died. I just bought a new Maranta yesterday.
Thank you! I don’t mist no, I used to but I found it doesn’t really help with humidity much and depending on your environment if there’s not good airflow then the mist can sit on the leaves longer and can cause bacterial or a fungal spread to happen.
Great video! Collection videos are my favorite!. I never thought to trim around the crispy edges. I’ve been debating to propagate my lemon lime maranta to have her fill out or just buy another one to add to the pot. In your experience do they take long to grow roots?
Thank you so much!! 🥰🙏🏼 I love watching them too! I usually have roots in a couple weeks not very long at all. Some cuttings may take a bit longer but I find they root pretty fast. they start pushing out new growth pretty quickly as well. One of my favorite things about them! :)
Thank you so much for your informative videos. Disaster! All my marantas new leaves are sprouting brown dried up and shriveled. The rest of the plant is fine. Any ideas what could be wrong?
oh, I like this plant so much, but I have already bought two plants with a difference in a year with them there was one story - they grew very actively, turned into a huge bush, bloomed and immediately after that they began to dry out and leave only 2-3 small leaves. I still don't understand what's the matter because I don't really change the care, and her condition is very excellent 😔
Thank you!! 🥰 I have some leca I bought awhile ago and had one plant I received in it but haven’t really experimented yet. I’ll definitely be trying it out at some point :)
Hi Melissa , I live in Texas and I’m loving the Marantas so far , I’m new with plants , and still learning a lot. But I would love to start a collection of them, can you recommend a place where I can purchase them ? I bought my first one ( Lemon lime ) at Lowes yesterday ☺️ but I haven’t see Marantas around my area in a while … the Al’s in advance 💫
Yay!! It’s so good to hear!! Marantas need more love :) I got most of mine locally :) the silver band I ordered off Etsy online. I got my lemon lime and red maranta from a lowe’s! I’ve seen some of the rabbit tracks at Walmart but haven’t checked recently. I would check any local nurseries or keep checking lowe’s or Home Depot. I go frequently but find they usually get new shipments once a week. They don’t liked to be shipped I will say that it can definitely stress them so I would check locally first :)
You’re welcome! Mostly medium I would say. They can tolerate some lower light but they might not grow the best. I wouldn’t do too close to a bright window so a few feet back would be great! I have most of mine under grow lights and so far they’re tolerating it well 💚
Love this video!! Thank you so much for covering just about all of my questions on marantas. I recently bought 2--a red and lemon-lime--and so far they are doing well in my Phoenix home. I do use a humidifier. I also watched your prop vid the other day and already have a few pieces of the red maranta in water (yayyy!!!). One question about the flower spikes (which I love too!), once they're dried out, do you cut those off as well?
Thank you for sharing an excellent and entertaining video. your channel always gives the best..and all your videos I like..and I always look forward to your channel videos..I hope you continue to succeed and produce very good and interesting videos..this video is my best ..#maranta#plants#melissacolection#melissabeautiful
Is it normal for the red maranta to produce those smaller "rabbit track markings" leaves instead of their hallmark look? Do you know if it a symptom of anything?
could be a lighting issue or nutrient deficiency. try moving it into brighter pr lower light depending on what it’s already getting, and if you haven’t refreshed the soil in a while or fertilized, try that too. hope this helps! a few faded leaves can be normal but if every new leaf it puts out is faded and noticeably smaller or shaped weird.. i would try those tips.
Hi Melissa, do you use a cleaning solution to wipe the leaves? I have a Calethea network and the leaves are so dusty but I’m. Not sure if I’m allowed to wet her leaves? SOS please send help😮
You didn't mention the lighting situation you have for your Marantas. Are they in an East window? North? I wouldn't think you have them in a southern window.
What precautions should be taken when bringing a new maranta home? Would you just rinse leaves and or spray them with anything before putting them close to other plants? I know they can be sensitive.
I've personally reported all new plants into fresh soil, wash the leaves, spray with insecticide then isolate in separate room for a few weeks before introducing them to the rest of my plant family.
@tinam4353 I use Safer's End All and only put a couple drops (yes, drops) into my dollar store water spray bottle. Shake bottle well, then drench the leaves from top and underneath. Don't expose plant to direct light, I think this solution would burn the leaves. Re apply a few weeks later if you notice any bugs, but so far, this does the trick for me. Also, any current plants that have bugs, isolate them and spray all the leaves too.
I have one that was given to me a year ago in a little square nursery pot. It has exploded. I have replanted it twice and has been flowering like crazy. I feel like she needs a bigger pot but the next size up looks too big. Is there a good depth they should be kept at? The 12" pot that I was looking at appears to be about the same high and it looks too deep.
My maranta is my favorite plant, i have 20. But she isnt doing well. She hasnt had a new leaf in months, shes not getting bigger, and the leaves are small. Shes not rootbound, or has root rot. She gets lots of sun. I truly dont know what else to do.
Hey Melissa I’m curious how much liquidirt you use in a gallon of water. Yours looks so much lighter in color than mine. I use one cap of the concentrate.
I dilute it again :) I mix half a cup of that diluted mixture and pour it into another gallon. Check my liquidirt highlight on Instagram! I think I show this and go over it a bit more! 🥰
Good point! I try to do more medium light about a couple few feet back from a window but mine sit under some grow lights right now. South is pretty strong so I would be careful with that light. I was worried the grow lights would be too strong but they’re tolerating it well. 🥰
Bright indirect. It does not like direct sun, would get burned. You can also use sheer curtains to block some of the light, mine is facing the west (only room with space).
