Shows up on the job with a full-sized quad cab and a covered trailer. Needs a drill, some screws and a bit of paint ;-). Also, I would cap the two holes rather than plug them, in case someone needed to tighten those 6-in screws fifty years from now.
@@Essenkiller Tommy would have found a hidden solution. What if that newel post was in it's original varnish finish? Drilling into it wouldn't have been an option. The kid didn't even look at what was happening in the basement and perhaps he could have stiffened it up from there.
Richard Martin I had that one go out. It was originally just toenailed to the floor. I used a big step-bit to create an entry hole and a long bit like theirs for the pilot. But I had to drill downwards through the post, through the flooring layers, and into the floor joist below. I did the 3 free sides (baluster in the way on the 4th side). Each was a different angle. Lots of futzing to get the angle of each hole right. Because of the steep angle we used the step-bit, btw. Now for the rest of the story: The guy I had hired helping me was named Dave. His former boss (the team that insulated my attic) called him Dangerous Dave because he just made you so uneasy to be around. I always made sure to never irritate him. One day a few years later, I read about a guy killing his girlfriend and leaving her body laying in the kitchen. Her boy discovered her when he got home from elementary school. That was in Seattle. They picked up Dangerous Dave in the Woodburn area, south of Portland, a few days later. He had no remorse. She pissed him off.

@@Outsideville The pressure comes from the wood brace he put in between the wall and the post. Once it's in place as long as nobody messes with it the post isn't going to move.
Nice fix, but what also could be added, is to separate the post just a 1/32nd and inject some wood glue with a glue needle, then put the screws in. We also inject Tight Bond glue or epoxy into each baluster, top and bottom through a very small drilled hole that can basically be filled after with a drop of paint.
Gorilla glue ain't all it's cracked up to be. Tight-Bond 3 exterior is the way to go. All the balusters should have been pre drilled using a 1/32nd drill and injected with glue, same with the bottom post. Still, a pretty good fix !
