I know it's been almost 2 years since you posted this video, and there are 216 other comments that this is going to be buried underneath. But I want to express my utter thankfulness toward you for posting this. This is an immensely helpful tutorial that guided me extraordinarily well while I repaired my 3DS and got it working for the first time in 3 years! I can finally relive all the nostalgia I have for this console, and I am immensely happy! I'd also like to say that this was my first successful console repair ever. I tried to replace a Gameboy Advance SP screen two years ago and it didn't work out well. Ever since, my confidence in opening up hardware hasn't been the greatest. After this video, I feel like I can do anything! Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart! I hope you're doing well, because you deserve it!
Had the same problem. First before you unscrew the complete backplate, try to remove only the battery and then press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. Then put the battery back in and power the 3DS on. This schould solve the problem also.
I have a special edition 3DS with many thousands of hours of gameplay on it. Got my first job to get this thing. Sending it into Nintendo, they said "we aren't able to fix this, but could replace it for a New Nintendo 2DS XL". Your video saved me where not even Nintendo could, thank you so much
Thanks a ton for this. I had updated my homebrewed new 3dsxl without updating the luma3ds boot files to latest version and had been getting this issue ever since. Thanks for getting my beloved 3ds working again.
Wanted to thank you for the help! Was absolutely devastated for weeks by my 3ds getting the BSoD. After watching the video and tentatively having a go at it after considering just sending it in for fix I'm proud to say she works beautifully! Can't thank you enough for the easy to follow clear tutorial and guide. Don't know what I'd do without my daily Pokémon unwinding time
Thanks man. I’m sure a bunch of people are gonna come looking for this tutorial now that Nintendo’s halted repairs for some of the original 3DS systems.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You are the ONLY person who did this for a "New"3ds xl! It still works, and I am so happy! I just downloaded a bunch of games because the ds store was closing, and, like, 2 weeks later, I get the black screen problem. You are my guy Joey!

I have the same problem but that's because I tried to fix a shoulder button but then since I couldn't put the cover on again cleanly I ended forcing it, and now only the blue light is on. I know probably broke something up, but when I open it again I don't see anything particulary broken. In short, it didn't work for me and it's very frustrating cause it was fully modded/homebrewed and full of game I didn't get to play. Thanks anyway, it was a nicely explained video.
Thank you so much!!!! I had been messing around with the battery (as I had done many times before) and when it wouldn't turn on my heart sank to the floor. I am so glad this fix worked, and I'm glad I didn't break anything in the process 😆
If this doesn't work you may have to disconnect one of the cameras. I tried the method above a few more times before I had to search other troubleshooting methods

Had a similar issue except sound was still working after power on (battery puffed up and caused a whole bunch of internal issues). Disconnecting the ribbon cable for the camera (the black one on the top right) got the displays to work again. We'll see what issues running the system like that causes. Opening the camera causes an error (obviously) and a forced reboot, but looks like it'll play most games for the time being.

Ok so maybe this will help someone, I was messing with my SD card on my Second New 3ds xl getting ready to do a system transfer. Suddenly after swapping my 32 with Pokémon yellow on it into my new one no Pokémon, so I swap it back. SUDDENLY, the new machine won't boot... blue LED comes on for about half a second and shut off. Well after calling Gamestop and starting getting a new systems on the way for warranty swap.... I decide to pull the back cover off again and try with out SD installed... boom hit the power switch and it fires right up.. power off, reinstall SD card, system boots up again just fine.. gave me a message about SD.. I didn't read it... but hey! System is back up!
Here in 2024. I'm going absolutely insane. I got the black screen of death on my newer model 3ds. The power light turns on WITH the sound AND the touchscreen working as well. Just that the screen is black. I've done the restart method (L Trigger + R Trigger + Up on D-pad + A button + Powering On). It actually makes the screen work. But takes me to an update page. I've updated it to the most modern one (1.17) so it just says up to date and turns off. When I turn it on normally it just does the same as it started, Power light on, Sound and touchscreen working, with a black screen. I've tried fixing since back in 2020 but obviously have been unsuccessful. HOW TF DO I FIX IT
I know its been almost 3 years since this video was posted but I tried this and it wasn't working. my new 3ds xl broke 5 years ago with these symptoms and ever since ive been trying to fix it every few months so by now the screws are gone. are they really important or should i be fine without them? also my console would always turn on to recovery mode and both screens worked but i fiddled with the ribbon cables and now the top screen wont turn on in recovery mode and neither screen turns on normally. it plays the home menu sound though. help would be greatly appreciated.
@@joeyhenry7312 I fixed it using and old school method. I did this, and it'll work for a few days or so before doing it again. I've had to keep opening it up and doing the exact same thing, only to get the same problem :( do you know anything else that might work?
I believe it's a 00 Phillips that I'm using. It may potentially just be really tight as well. Be super patient when trying to loosen it because if you strip a screw on any of these systems its a major pain in the butt after that.
Good job, I found that the flex coming from the screen is the real issue, and I move it and clean it and finally it works, but this will be a permanent solution ? IDK

It never worked :( I think it got water damaged once on the screen because I had it in my backpack, and when I came back to look at it, the screen was not turning on nor was any sound coming out, but it did have a blue light and can still charge. PLEASE tell me how to fix this.
Honestly I can't remember exactly but I think the inside ones are tri wing screws. Look closely at them and see if they have 3 points or 4. The first back is 4 point Phillips/cross but you may need the 3 point tri wing for the others. Search tri wing on Amazon and they have some kits for like $7.
2ds should have a similar motherboard since it plays the same game. As for the popping sound I'm not sure if it's a side effect or if maybe there is some audible electrical surge thru the speakers or something but I'm not really sure on that one.
This work with the Original 3ds Xl? I tried taking out the wifi module and re--installing it and no luck, Would it be possible for you to make a video about it or even link to a fix?
im having somewhat the same issue but it powers on with the blue light then the wifi light comes on less than 1 second later with no function im not sure what else i can do, its impossible to get the Nand fixed if it comes down to that
The first back plate to expose the battery is just a standard phillips or cross head. Whatever you feel like calling it. Then to get down to the circuit board you need a tri wing. If you just search tri wing screwdriver set on ebay or Amazon there are hundreds of options to choose from. I just opted to get a set that also had the game bit drivers so that I could open old like gameboy and SNES games and whatnot. They are super cheap from China ($3-$5)and take a month or so to come in or if you want it quicker from the US a set is like $10-$15 so just buy whatever set you like most.
This is like the one I got. You can buy them in all different types of sets and colors and plastic or metal or whatever. I just picked the one i did bc I liked the little holder and it was cheap from China and came with the bits I wanted. www.ebay.com/itm/Tri-wing-Screwdriver-Repair-Unlock-Tool-Kit-Set-for-Switch-SNES-DS-Lite-Wii-GBA-/324096049781?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292
I used to be able to either tilt mine or put pressure on it and it would turn on. Now it freezes in its last frame. It won't turn on at all and now has this issue and this didn't work. Any other ideas?
I also have the problem but with a new 3ds XL. When I try to turn it on, a blue light and a short creaking sound come out of the speaker and then go off again.
if you dont have tools for itt just don’t use the charger, leave it unplugged. Now, hold A+Up On the D-PAD+L+R+The power Button. Hold all of those buttons until the screen comes up. Update your system. It should be fixed now. or, Do the same thing with the first method, but do it plugged into the charger. Do this if the first method doesn’t work.
It worked but the screen became black again. Also, it’s god dam impossible to un screw them for some reason. My dad had to put oil and use a lighter to heat up the tip of the screwdriver to get the screws out.
It didn’t work… mine might really be dead haha, nothing I find online is fixing it Mannnn I might really have to take it to a shop, that’s gonna be so expensive!!
I have a black screen of death and tried this but it didn't work. I'm not sure if it's because of the method or if I killed my system by forgetting to remove the SD card before removing the 2nd cover. Now the SD card slot seems to be loose. Hopefully someone here has answers because now I'm worried that I screwed up beyond repair.
I removed and reinstalled the wifi chip twice before the screen came up. You could try that or you could also force a update to the system to see if it helps. Boot your device into recovery mode by holding (L) + (R) + (A) + (UP) while powering on and see if the screen will come on.
@@joeyhenry7312 hi i tried to force an update and it turned on but my screen freezes after a couple seconds. Is there any way to fix this or is it normal?

I just opted to get a set that also had the game bit drivers so that I could open old like gameboy and SNES games and whatnot. They are super cheap from China ($3-$5)and take a month or so to come in or if you want it quicker from the US a set is like $10-$15 so just buy whatever set you like most.
This is like the one I got. You can buy them in all different types of sets and colors and plastic or metal or whatever. I just picked the one i did bc I liked the little holder and it was cheap from China and came with the bits I wanted.

I used to be able to either tilt mine or put pressure on it and it would turn on. Now it freezes in its last frame. It won't turn on at all and now has this issue and this didn't work. Any other ideas?
I also have the problem but with a new 3ds XL. When I try to turn it on, a blue light and a short creaking sound come out of the speaker and then go off again.
if you dont have tools for itt just
don’t use the charger, leave it unplugged. Now, hold A+Up On the D-PAD+L+R+The power Button. Hold all of those buttons until the screen comes up. Update your system. It should be fixed now.
or, Do the same thing with the first method, but do it plugged into the charger. Do this if the first method doesn’t work.
@@MarioSaku Hey thanks for your great answer. I really appreciate it. I am going to try it. best regards
@@foxcloud did it work?
It worked but the screen became black again. Also, it’s god dam impossible to un screw them for some reason. My dad had to put oil and use a lighter to heat up the tip of the screwdriver to get the screws out.
HEY JOEY! hi can you make a video fixing a new regular one. Because I don't think my new regular 3ds has the same parts :/
It didn’t work… mine might really be dead haha, nothing I find online is fixing it
Mannnn I might really have to take it to a shop, that’s gonna be so expensive!!
If the microsd is loose, then yes, you need to repair it.
hi i do what you do and it still black screen but the sound manu is on so what to do ???
I removed and reinstalled the wifi chip twice before the screen came up. You could try that or you could also force a update to the system to see if it helps. Boot your device into recovery mode by holding (L) + (R) + (A) + (UP) while powering on and see if the screen will come on.
@@joeyhenry7312 hi i tried to force an update and it turned on but my screen freezes after a couple seconds. Is there any way to fix this or is it normal?
Unfortunately this didn't work for my SNES Edition New 3DS XL :( the screen is still black with the blue light on. i'm devastated
Help, my 3DS says "Enter the pin using ABXY and DPad to process" it requires a 8 digit pin, and I lost my SD card, can I follow these steps to fix or are there any easier ways?
thanks you.
Hey man thanks for helping all these wonderful people out, but it sadly did not work for me, cuz I dropped it on a pile of rocks, in hope of a lost resort maybe I could fix it, but I think it has been to late 😢
Hey! My 3ds XL looks exactly like the one in this video!
What does it mean when your 3DS XL turns on (you can see light on the screen) but it’s still black? I don’t have the blue light problem and I have no idea what to do. All of this happened after I got it back from it being repaired :(
