Mandy Patinkin, the actor who played Inigo Montoya, has said on numerous occasions that the motivation he used was very personal. When he was speaking to the Six Fingered Man, he imagined he was speaking to the cancer that took the life of his father. Thus, the real emotion behind his line reading, especially at the end.
I saw something about him and that line a few months back. Someone had made a video asking him about it because she had lost her father and they loved the movie. He responded by video to her. Awesome guy! 😃
Mandy and Cary had 4 months of training with swords for their fight. The original fight was to be less than 2 minutes but was expanded to nearly 4 minutes.
I took a fencing class in college, a few years after this movie came out. The instructor, a former national championship contender, loved this scene so much that class one day was watching it on her VHS copy of the movie and analyzing Wesley and Inigo's moves.

We are watching a movie through the imagination of a child. That's why bits are over the top. This movie has the greatest sword fight in cinematic history. IMHO.
Inigo doesn’t die from the thrown blade because he kissed the miracle pill before shoving it down Wesley’s throat. That gave him just enough immunity to let him somewhat recover.

The novel and screenplay were written by William Goldman, one of the most influential screenwriters ever. He also wrote Marathon Man (also from his novel), All the President's Men, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid among others. Goldman asked his kids what kind of story they wanted him to write: one said a princess, one said a bride... so he combined it. I've gifted the novel for birthdays and Christmas multiple times. Robin Wright aka Buttercup stated that late Andre The Giant aka Fezzik kept her warm during cold evenings when filming cupping her head with his very large hands. According to Robin, Andre was the gentle giant.
❤ "As you wish." ❤ Fun Fact: Was shot on a budget of $16 Million. Action Star Fact: Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin performed all of their own sword-fighting after many hours of training. According to Rob Reiner, the only stunt performed by Elwes' stunt double was one flip during the "Chatty Duelists" scene. Historical Fact: There really was a "Dread Pirate Roberts" in real life. His name was Bartholomew Roberts, also known as Black Bart, who operated in the Caribbean in the early 18th century. He is reckoned by many to have been the most successful pirate of all time. Gentle Giant Fact: Despite his character Fezzik's almost-superhuman strength, André René Roussimoff's back problems at the time prevented him from actually lifting anything heavy. Robin Wright had to be attached to wires in the scene where Buttercup jumps from the castle window into Fezzik's arms because he couldn't support her himself.
A fun related fact, when Cary Elwes was in Mel Brook's Robin Hood: Men in Tights a few years later, he basically needed no sword training what-so-ever because of this movie.
The six-fingered man was Christopher Guest, who has been married to Jamie Lee Curtis for almost 40 years. Rob Reiner who directed this also directed 'Misery' (1990) a very different film based on a Stephen King book. There's one story that when Billy Crystal was improvising his 'Miracle Max' scene, Rob Reiner was laughing so much behind the camera that he couldn't breathe and thought he might throw up so he had to step out to take a break and compose himself. The 'Cliffs of Insanity' when they are viewed from a distance and you can tell that they are real, are cliffs on the west coast of Ireland that are a popular tourist attraction (not just because of this film). The film was shot at different locations in England and Ireland.
I am so pleased your beautiful wife got a chance to see this charming classic tale. In many ways the warmth and gentleness of the style of this movie reminds me of your wife's gentle and loving personality.
Although this genre of movie typically wouldn't necessarily appeal to me, from the moment I saw this movie, I fell in love with it. Such a unique blend of comedy, drama, action, and hope. It has some of the most memorable, quotable lines ever spoken in a movie. I consider it to be one of my favorite movies of all time. I don't know anyone who's seen the movie who didn't like or love it. Great reaction!
Apparently at one point there were talks of a remake and Elwes responded, “There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It’d be a shame to ruin this one.” And it really is perfect. Not only have I never met anyone who has seen this movie and didn’t like it, I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about it.
This movie has a special place in my heart. I'm the exact same age as Fred Savage (to the *day*) so I was his age here when this came out. Also when the Grandfather tells him "As you wish" at the end, with the meaning being "I love you." kills me every time.
A friend of mine was talking about watching this movie with his girlfriend and one of our other friends immediately started laughing and teasing him about doing a movie night with something called “The Princess Bride.” At this point, we realized he didn’t know what it was and practically forced him to watch it that night. He loved it so much my Christmas present for him that you ended up being a full-size movie poster lol.
As a guy I tell my better half often ,,As you wish'' and mean exactly what Wesley meant and there are times when the expression means something very different 😊
A classic! My childhood wrapped with a bow. :) It was written as a book, the father promised his girl a bed night story, she asked for princess and a bride, this is the movie based on the book.
My favorite is Grandpa. He’s Falking great. 😉 If Inigo becomes the Dread Pirate Roberts, he’ll still technically be in the _Revenge_ business, since that’s the name of the pirate ship.
Another line I hear used a lot that was not mentioned in your wrap up (maybe you did earlier): "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means"
Though not very well received at first, it helped launch the careers of Cary Elwes and Robin Wright to leads and not just ensemble parts. For several years after, it was the movie they were most recognized for. It is also the film they both have admitted to being proud and comfortable with to show their young growing children at the time. The Princess Bride has become sooo beloved and iconic because of the writing, easy flow, the various genres (adventure, action, comedy, romance, and fantasy) it travels to while telling a sweet, endearing, hopeful story for all in the family. There is no real vulgarity, nudity, gore, or lascivious affections. All the main characters are played by well-trained actors who knew how to play their parts with sincerity and truth to the characters. There was no need for CGI or needless special effects. Overall, the was made in its simplest form, relying mostly on the dialogue and the acting of each actor. The effects that it does have are at the minimum to keep the story moving forward.
The bad 6 fingered man is Christopher Guest who is married to Jamie Lee Curtis, He has made some hilarious movies like Best in Show & This is Spinal Tap.
!!!Yes- YES!!! This is IT!! Thank You, Mr. David.... Mz. Toni, You will LOVE, LAUGH & Never Cry, You Rock Mr. DAVID!! "Have Fun Storming the Castle..!" 😍
Toni watched The Princess Bride? Inconceivable! Cast notes: Cary Elwes was also in Twister and Bram Stoker's Dracula. Billy Crystal starred as one of the first regular gay characters on American television on ABC's Soap, and was also the main lead in City Slickers and When Harry Met Sally. . . Fred Savage starred on The (original) Wonder Years. I always thought he should've played Jay Leno's son in something. Oscar winner Carol Kane is best known for Taxi starring Christopher Lloyd, Judd Hirsch, Tony Danza and Andy Kaufman. She currently appears as the chief engineer of the starship Enterprise on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Buttercup was the female lead in Forrest Gump and also starred in Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot. Mandy Patinkin starred on Criminal Minds, and in Yentl, which I highly recommend. The "Inconceivable" guy is a semi-regular on Young Sheldon, recurred on the original Gossip Girl, and played a popular alien character on many episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as well as Rex in all the Toy Story films. Peter Falk was Columbo!
The one thing a remember about the book was that the ending was a bit more ambiguous and said that Wesley continues to get better but that it was uncertain if he would ever get his full strength back, I guess it was meant to be a more adult, less simplistic "happily ever after," ending, but it was a slight buzz kill for me. I liked the movie ending better.
This movie is for everyone boys and girls it is such a great movie. This movie is based on a book. The writer of the book also wrote the script of the movie . The scene with Westley and the six finger man when the six finger man hit him in the head was real and the actor who plays Wesley had to go to the hospital. There was real spark between the main actors in real life Westley and Buttercup that's why it works. Andre the giant used his big hands to protect Robin Wright (Buttercup ) head when she was cold on the set. You should also see Wilow, Lady Hawk, The Never Ending Story and The Labyrinth 1986. This is one of the movies with an epic soundtrack like Conan The Barbarian or Highlander which you should also see. one of my favorite quotes from this movie "“We are men of action, lies do not become us.”" . Fyi the actor who plays the grandpa is famous for playing the funny detective Columbo which had a great show for many years. Also Fyi I heard the writer of the book and of the script was on set when the filmed the Fire Swamp scene forgot it was a movie and panicked when fire was on Buttercup (Robin Wright) dress
Miracle Max and his wife were played by Billy Crystal and the wonderful Carol Kane. Peter Falk (besides being Columbo) was also in the great Neil Simon comedy Murder by Death, with Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, Maggie Smith, Truman Capote, and others.
Mandy Patinkin who plays the Spaniard lost his father to cancer right before filming He said n he pictured the 6 fingered man as cancer and when he kills him and recites the line that he wants his father back he drops the accent and says it in his real voice
This was one of my top favourites back in the 80s. Still hold true in this day and age, not that say much about today. Glad you both enjoyed it. Much love from Brisbane, Australia.
Oh gosh...I have seen this movie hundreds of times...I really hope these guys both LOVE this one as much as I do. And I cannot wait to see what they make of Miracle Max and his wife Valerie...my personal favorite characters. LOL
Two of the bits of writing in cinematic history. Inigo: "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." And .... Inigo: Who are you? Roberts: No one of consequence. Inigo: I must know. Roberts: Get used to disappointment. 😉
I must say, this is one of my favorites! Glad you got Toni to see it. Always loved Fezzik (the giant.) I have a friend who used to work at the old Boston Garden. One of the nights he worked security was when Andre The Giant was wrestling there. and got to meet him. My friend is 6'3 and about 280. Andre TOWERED over him. pretty wild. great video!!
Hey, Toni and David. Loved your react. I always thought Inigo's name should have been longer. Like, "Hello, my name is Inigo Roberto Carlos Alfonse Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." You know how the Spanish have those long names. 😂 Regards from Illinois. ✌&❤
This is a legitimate addition to any list of Christmas movies you may have put together. Notice some of the little clues in the grandson's room. Remember, this MOVIE is a visualization of the BOOK's narrative; the grandson hears grandfather's voice read the WORDS in the book; any IMAGES that are conjured up are in grandson's head. To really dig into the making of this film, try to find at your local library the book (or recorded book) by Cary Elwes (Westley, The Man in Black) titled "As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride." Lots of film lore and personal insights, how the cast was assembled, how much genuine fun and friendship the ALL had and cultivated while making the movie.
My experience is this movie became big when released on vhs for rentals. That first year I saw it several times at a "let's rent a movie" night. I got burnt out on it because of this. I remember the night it was the straw that broke the camel's back, "hey we got 'The Princess Bride'". I thought "oh god not again". Still a good movie though.
I love the movie and wouldn't have thought I would had anyone described it to me. I am so glad I finally watched it last year, at 62, am so glad I did.
One movie I would recommend to you is Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. I've seen you already watched a movie with Kevin Costner, and this one has Alan Rickman as Sheriff in it to boot!
OK ... just now starting to watch this one ... I can't believe I'm saying this but my money is betting she doesn't cry during this one ... shocking but I doubt it ... if she does then I give up ..
Scenes/subplots that are better in the book: Buttercup mourning Westley, Humperdinck arranging for commoner Buttercup to become a princess, Inigo’s backstory, Fezzik’s backstory, the snow sand rescue, the Pit of Despair, working with Miracle Max. Scenes/subplots better in the movie include: Inigo sword fighting with Westley, Vizzini battle of wits, Inigo fighting Count Ruben, storming the castle, and the meta story being the Grandpa reading to the kid.
Screenplay by the late great William Goldman who wrote such classics as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the Presidents Men, Marathon Man, Magic, Misery and many others.....
I love this movie. My sister doesn't like it. I called her a Philistine. Showed it to my great-niece's stepdaughter who's 10 and she adores it. My 4 year old great-great-nephew loves the action and Fezzig the Giant.
If you listen to books on Audible, I strongly recommend listening to "As You Wish" written and read by Cary Elwes, but also featuring the voices of many of the actors and creators of the movie. You'll learn many facts about the making of the movie, helpful tips (don't get hit on the head with the hilt of a sword), and hear Elwes fantastic impression of Sir Roger Moore.
RIP to Andre the Giant, in this, so good. What if grandpa is a descendant of Indigo or Wesley?😮😮. Billy crystal is the magic spells doctor. He said once in a restaurant, he's having a conversation at a table with a business guy and a few friends. He says another guy was sitting at a table, at an angle away, from him. He asked crystal what he got, and he had ordered something similar. Then he tells Crystal, " I once had a BLT here, and the Bacon was nice and lean, nice and leeeeeeen!" He said everyone started cracking up!
Great reaction! Thanks!, I've enjoyed this movie since I watched it regularly on vhs, lol, I've always thought that the scene's and images were to be viewed from the grandsons imagination as his grandfather reads the story., it is truly brilliant!, imo...
I do remember Elwes on Letterman doing a promo for this film and mentioning he would like to play Tony Stark in a live action Iron Man movie... everyone was very confused by that statement as Iron Man was not the popular character that he is today.
@@popculturallychallenged It's really good! A fun read. Lots more backstory on Inigo, Fezzik, and Buttercup, and a much more elaborate Pit of Despair scene.
The one scene I would have loved to see your reaction to and it didn't make the cut 😟 "Mawwiage. Mawwiage is wot bwings us togewah today." No reaction to this is simply I N C O N seriously C E I V why not A B L E ?!?! 😤 totally just kidding. Take care of yourselves!
I don't recall this being poorly-received in the theatres, but it might have grown more as word-of-mouth spread. When I first watched it in the theatre, the biggest audience laugh was 'Mawwiage....'
Also, in case it wasn’t mentioned, Buttercup was played by Robin Wright who also played Jenny in “Forest Gump”. She was also in “Message in a Bottle”, “The Girl With a Dragon Tattoo”, and “unbreakable”, among others.

He said n he pictured the 6 fingered man as cancer and when he kills him and recites the line that he wants his father back he drops the accent and says it in his real voice
Thanks for the info!
A sleeper hold will make you pass out for about 10 seconds
Thanks!
LOL
Have fun watching the reaction! You think it’ll work?
@@0okamino It would take a miracle. LOL
This was a great movie!
I took a poll with the humans I know and we've agreed that u 2 are the cutest couple on UA-cam 😊
You and your humans are so kind..... I think David is the cutest!! - Toni 🥰
Saw this way back in the late 80's! Definitely a classic imo, nothing else quite like it
Definitely a classic! 😃
Yes!!! Oh Toni is going to LOVE this one! and so NOT a Hallmark movie!! LOL
Yeah she is.
Yep! It was great!
Two of the bits of writing in cinematic history. Inigo: "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." And .... Inigo: Who are you? Roberts: No one of consequence. Inigo: I must know. Roberts: Get used to disappointment. 😉
Great lines!! 😂
He was definitely a giant! 🙂
I love this movie. So much fun, lighthearted and moving at the same time. Awesome to see you enjoying some laughs!
Thanks! This was a fun one!
I love this movie. You guys should watch Robin Hood Men in Tights
Thanks for the suggestion!
“I’ve heard you say it to the girls”
Well done sir 👏
Hey, Toni and David.
Loved your react. I always thought Inigo's name should have been longer. Like, "Hello, my name is Inigo Roberto Carlos Alfonse Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." You know how the Spanish have those long names. 😂
Regards from Illinois. ✌&❤
That would have been awesome! 😂
Count Rugen would have already escaped before Inigo finished introducing himself. 😄
@@0okamino 😂😂😂
now this is what i want to see toni react to
Hope you enjoyed it! 🙂
Thank you, will need to research a bit more. Sounds intriguing. - Toni 🥰
I would say it was a decent movie! The humor was a bit strange though. - Toni 🥰
This movie is so much fun. I'm glad you both enjoyed it.
Thank you for watching with us. - Toni 🥰
I loved Zorro as a kid and this confused me initially, great movie
Zorro cannot be trusted, according to Fezzik, anyway.
We need to watch Zorro at some point! 😃
"How did he have the strength to do that?" Because this is a fairy tale 😂
Good point! 😀
I love the movie and wouldn't have thought I would had anyone described it to me. I am so glad I finally watched it last year, at 62, am so glad I did.
It is an incredible movie! 😀
One movie I would recommend to you is Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. I've seen you already watched a movie with Kevin Costner, and this one has Alan Rickman as Sheriff in it to boot!
Thanks for the suggestion!
OK ... just now starting to watch this one ... I can't believe I'm saying this but my money is betting she doesn't cry during this one ... shocking but I doubt it ... if she does then I give up ..
I don't think i cried this time! - Toni 🥰
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. So much fun, perfect dialog, exciting fight scenes...True Love. All around great!
The Princess Bride is one of my all time favorite movies!
This is the perfect sunday afternoon rainy day movie i love it great reaction
Thanks!
This is one of my top-ten favorite movies. Enjoyed your review as usual. BTW, David always like how you don't tell Tony anything about the movie 😀
Thanks! 😊
Sounds like ready the book would be fun too. - Toni 😊
Your wife has never heard of this before?! Inconceivable!
😂 You keep using that word, I don’t think it means what you think it means?!? 😂
@@popculturallychallenged 🤣
Screenplay by the late great William Goldman who wrote such classics as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the Presidents Men, Marathon Man, Magic, Misery and many others.....
Cool! We may have to check some of those out!
I love this movie. My sister doesn't like it. I called her a Philistine. Showed it to my great-niece's stepdaughter who's 10 and she adores it. My 4 year old great-great-nephew loves the action and Fezzig the Giant.
That so cool that the kids enjoyed it. - Toni 😊
Cool! I'll have to check that out! Thanks!
😂 - Toni
I knew Toni’d like this. Great reaction, as usual y’all. (Btw, the 6 fingered man…in real life has been married to Jamie Lee Curtis for 40 years.😉)
Cool! Thanks for the info!
Great reaction! Thanks!, I've enjoyed this movie since I watched it regularly on vhs, lol, I've always thought that the scene's and images were to be viewed from the grandsons imagination as his grandfather reads the story., it is truly brilliant!, imo...
Thank you!
Mate,i laughed every time you did! Some people just don't understand 😂❤
Glad I'm not alone! 😃
That was fun! Thank y'all!
Thank you!
your wife seemed very tired...but i liked the reaction as ive never seen the movie...great job!
Thanks!
I do remember Elwes on Letterman doing a promo for this film and mentioning he would like to play Tony Stark in a live action Iron Man movie... everyone was very confused by that statement as Iron Man was not the popular character that he is today.
That's funny! 😂
Don't overthink it....Well she tried.
I did try!! 😬 - Toni 🥰
"Is this a kissing book?"
😂
One of the only movies that’s actually as good as the book on which it’s based.
I feel like I need to make time to read the book. - Toni 🥰
@@popculturallychallenged It's really good! A fun read. Lots more backstory on Inigo, Fezzik, and Buttercup, and a much more elaborate Pit of Despair scene.
What kind of movie is this? It's every kind of movie.
And, even in being every kind, it never feels like it stretches itself too far. That makes it the best kind.
This was an awesome movie! 😃
The one scene I would have loved to see your reaction to and it didn't make the cut 😟
"Mawwiage. Mawwiage is wot bwings us togewah today."
No reaction to this is simply I N C O N seriously C E I V why not A B L E ?!?! 😤
totally just kidding.
Take care of yourselves!
😂
Christopher Guest, who was the 6th finger man. He said he was actually scared at the fight scene as Mandy got really angry.
1:29 the quotable type
Very quotable.... 🤷🏻♀️ - Toni
I don't recall this being poorly-received in the theatres, but it might have grown more as word-of-mouth spread. When I first watched it in the theatre, the biggest audience laugh was 'Mawwiage....'
There's a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity not to react to this one.
I hope you do Terms of Endearment soon! A lighthearted, feel good movie that Toni is sure not to cry through! 😃😉 A must see!
We hope to at some point!
Mawage. Mawage is wot bwings us togeder today. Mawage, that bwessed awangment, that dweam wifin a dweam
😂
Also, in case it wasn’t mentioned, Buttercup was played by Robin Wright who also played Jenny in “Forest Gump”.
She was also in “Message in a Bottle”, “The Girl With a Dragon Tattoo”, and “unbreakable”, among others.
Cool! Might have to check those out someday!
