Andre also loved making the movie. He felt that it was a rare time when he didn't feel like everyone was looking at him like a freak but instead as just a member of a cast. It was a happy time for him despite the tremendous back pain he was suffering. He was in constant pain. Director Carl Reiner helped work around Andre's problem with the help of a heavy duty harness during the scene when he is pulling himself and the other three up the cliff. Also, when Buttercup "jumps" down into his arms in the end, she was on a harness so she only had to be dropped a couple feet down into his arms. Robin Wright (Buttercup) got emotional years later, speaking of how, during some cold days of filming, in between takes, Andre used one of his giant hands to keep her head warm. [EDIT] I meant to say ROB Reiner.
There's also the funny anecdote about one day during filming, when Andre let out the loudest, longest roar of a fart that went for a full minute. Everybody was silent on set. Reiner walked up to him and said "Are you ok Andre?", to which Andre replied "I am now, Boss".
He was such a sweet character in this movie. You would never have known how much pain he was in. You can find the interview with the cast and see how much they loved him,and everything he had going on.😪
Mandy Patinkin, the actor who played Inigo Montoya, had lost his own father, so the line "I want my father back" was especially meaningful to him. You can feel that he put his heart into it. For fans this is one of his most memorable roles for a reason!
@@vanessalucas4760 It was the other way around for me. I knew I recognized gideon's actor from somewhere when i started watching it, but it took me ages to figure it out
I really don't think they should ever remake any movie. Look what they did to red dawn. They would destroy this masterpiece of a film if they remade it.
@@WadePenleyremakes will never go away, but it isn’t always bad. Some remakes can be considered better than the originals (ie The Thing, Scarface, Dune etc.). Also, Shakespeare will be remade and reinterpreted until the end of time
It’s not a giant rat, It’s a Rodent of Unusual Size. 😁. Now that you’ve seen The Princess Bride, you’ll recognize how often people throw around lines from this movie.
They didn't know how to advertise it when it first came out (because it was in so many genres - romance, adventure, humor, ...) with the result that it went under the radar for a long time. This is how good movies get turned into "cult classics."
"The Greatest Love Story Ever Told" isn't just about Wesley and Buttercup, it is also Inigo Montoya's love for his father and the love of the Grandpa to his grandson...such a classic!
Cary Elwes, who played Wesley, wrote a book about the making of the movie. Basically, it sounded like a dream experience, and Andre the Giant truly was a gentle giant.
The Princess Bride is almost a secret code for some of us movie fans. Saying 'as you wish' or 'inconceivable!' will often get a reaction. And great reaction from you guys. Glad you enjoyed it.
_"Tyrone, you know how much I love watching you work. But I've got my country's 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder, and Guilder to frame for it; I'm swamped."_ Love that line, so much.
As a teacher, you'll probably appreciate this one, Jay. I taught for 8 years in inner city Nashville in a behavior intervention school. Every year during state testing, we were allowed to watch a movie after testing was over for the day. I always brought in the Princess Bride and told the boys to give it 20 minutes. Then I would offer a different movie if they didn't like The Princess Bride. The boys ALWAYS wanted to finish the movie!
My husband had a teacher bring the VHS in for the last of school. A third of the class started rolling their eyes. Without thinking my husband said “are you f*cking serious. That movie is f*cking hilarious”. Surprisingly for him, he did not get trouble with the teacher that day for swearing. Lol. (Although I purposely didn’t write out the whole word here. Not sure if it’s against channel rules to do so).
This has always been my favorite movie as a grown man from a quite hardened background and this comment really just means a lot to hear in a very specific way to me. Thank you for sharing. Have to say I’m not surprised at all at those kids reactions!
When my brother and I were little we always turned our noses up at this movie because of the title. I first actually saw it when I was around 10, I think, and it's been one of my absolute favorites ever since. I'm nearly 40.
I lol'd when Buttercup was about to be eaten by the eels and you both looked so stressed and Grandpa stopped to reassure the boy because you looked like you needed the reassurance more than he did! 😂😂
It was such a good illustration of the whole "meta" angle of the project. This could have just been a run-of-the-mill fantasy movie (although certainly one of the better ones), but using the framing device of the grandpa and grandson and employing Savage as a stand-in for the audience took it to another level.
@@michaelccozens And such a good stand-in for the audience too. Watching reactions to this movie, the interruptions ALWAYS line up with how the person watching was feeling lol
As an older dude I have zero problems saying that this is one of my favorite movies and I watch it whenever it's on the tube. I quote it frequently to the point of driving my kids crazy! Have fun storming the castle!!🤣✌️
I grew up in a renaissance family and could do things like swallow swords and breathe fire before middle school was out so we loved this movie growing up, we all quote it relentlessly
Another great line is when they ask him what do you think of my torture machine! You expect him to say something brash like in most hero movies. I laugh at your machine or something. Instead, he starts whimpering and crying!
Great reaction!! The Inigo/Westley duel was choreographed by the late great Bob Anderson, who was Darth Vader in Empire and Jedi during the lightsaber fights and was Viggo Mortensen’s sword teacher during the Lord of the Rings trilogy :)
One of my absolute favorites! I still quote this movie constantly! Every time I left the house, my mom would say "Have fun storming the castle!" Perfect movie!
I got Wallace Shawn's autograph (the little inconceivable guy) at a comicon, and he is 100% the nicest celebrity Ive ever met. He stayed over an hour after the con closed to have a personal conversation with every single person in his line. Holding their hand, having a real moment with everyone. Amazing
A movie you really must watch is "O Brother, Where Art Thou". It's a blockbuster with lots of bluegrass music like you've never heard before and the dialogue is filled with one hilarious line after another.
@@stuartdavies10 I've seen it more times than any other movie (and I'm old). Every character was awesome. "We thought you wuz a toad!" Too funny! And the movie put bluegrass on the map for many people.
This one, please! A while back, I believe they reacted to Man of Constant Sorrow and almost everyone commented with quotes ("I'm a Dapper Dan man!" lol) and that they should react to the movie.
During the pandemic, a bunch of celebrities made a remote version of Princess Bride, each celeb taking a short scene, filming themselves re-creating it in their home with props and costumes they happened to have lying around, then edited all together. It was fantastic. Charlize Theron as "The Dread Pirate Roberts" as played by Fezzik in the fiery holocaust cloak is a particular highlight. This film is beloved by generations, including the top celebrity actors working today. It's a classic.
If I remember rightly Cary Elwes - the original Westley took part in it, as did Fred Savage and Rob Reiner. They actually liked the idea and got behind it. All the actors involved did it as a fun project during lockdown, because they also love the film and to lift people's spirits when things looked so bad at the time. Cary Elwes being happy to be involved in it says a lot as he's on record as saying doing a proper actual remake of the film shouldn't be attempted.
@@pawsnclaws1 Lol. The people in the original are celebs, too, genius. And by whatever imaginary definition of "woke" exists in your head, I'm sure they would also qualify.
I love this movie! Fun fact: Bob Anderson who choreographed the beautiful sword fights in this film was also the choreographer of the sword fights in Highlander, The Lord Of The Rings and Pirates Of The Caribbean.
Plus neither actor knew sword play at all before shooting. They practiced every day in every spare moment and shot this scene on the last day of shooting. Everyone on set stayed late just to watch.
The six-fingered man is played by Christopher Guest, who also appeared in one of the greatest music movies of all time. You owe it to yourselves to do "This is Spinal Tap."
How could you not love this movie?! It’s got it all; romance, adventure, humor! So glad you two enjoyed it! Another movie to consider is “Willow”. An absolute gem full of adventure, magic, swordplay and, of course, humor.
Yes! WILLOW! it is such an underrated fantasy film. It too has it all - adventure, romance, humor, magic beings, etc. Val Kilmer was quite tasty for the eyes back in his prime. I heard that they are bringing Willow's story back in another film? Or maybe a streaming series? I don't recall exactly other than my hubby mentioning it awhile back...
@@nberrypatch02 It IS coming as a series! Warwick Davis is reprising his role. 😊 Unfortunately, Val Kilmer won’t be returning. 😪 I hope they keep true to the world they created. 🤞
This movie is for everyone boys and girls it is such a great movie. This movie is based on a book. The writer of the book also wrote the script of the movie . The scene with Westley and the six finger man when the six finger man hit him in the head was real and the actor who plays Wesley had to go to the hospital. here was real spark between the main actors in real life Westley and Buttercup that's why it works. Andre the giant used his big hands to protect Robin Wright (Buttercup ) head when she was cold on the set. You should also see Wilow, Lady Hawk, The Never Ending Story and The Labyrinth 1986. This is one of the movies with an epic soundtrack like Conan The Barbarian or Highlander which you should also see. one of my favorite quotes from this movie "“We are men of action, lies do not become us.”"
The grandpa said "as you wish" because that was the phrase that the farm boy used to tell her that he loved her. When the grandpa said it he was telling his grandson that he loved him. You guys seemed to have a great affinity for children - my favorite performance by a child is in the film "To Kill a Mockingbird." The film is a classic that you might really enjoy. It does involve racism in the South in the 1930s so it definitely has heavy parts - if you do watch it be prepared for that.
For some additional information about this... A couple of years ago several actors got together and did a quick homemade type movie celebrating the movie with different famous actors playing the parts, reading selected lines from the movie. The ending was Rob Reiner in the bed playing the part of the boy and his real life father, Carl Reiner (very famous comedian in his own right) played the grandfather with the 'as you wish' ending. Carl would pass away a few weeks after filming that scene.
13:10 I love that you included that line in the edit. In a movie that is so quotable, this single line is my favorite. As Buttercup says "we'll never survive," Westley responds with supreme confidence and without a hint of sarcasm, "Nonsense, you're only saying that because nobody ever has."
This is one of the sweetest, funniest, silliest movies of all time and I’m SO happy you guys loved it!! So much rewatch value. When Wesley said “as you wish” he was really saying “I love you” (if you recall), so when grampa said as you wish in reply to his grandson’s request to reread the story, he was telling him that he loved him. Try not to cry Amber! ❤️
Every time I finish this movie I cry when the Grandpa says "As you wish," because it reminds me of my grandpa so much. I LOVE this movie. I love that I found another that notices it as well. :D
@@michaeleustice429 Well, I agree, it is perfect. I would just argue it isn't silly... it is a fairy tale set within a story. Fairy tales have things like "Shrieking Eels" and "Cliffs of Insanity". Fairy tales are always hyperbolic and fantastical. I think it represented a fairy tale very well.
The actor who plays Wesley/Farm Boy all stars in the Mel Brooks comedy “Robin Hood Men In Tights. If you end up liking this movie you might well like “Robin Hood Men In Tights”.
It IS a funny movie, but it would be best if they saw Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and maybe a another one or two “medieval” movies (NOT GoT and similar) before Men in Tights to give it context to the jokes. Just like needing to see Star Wars IV-VI and maaaybe Police Academy I before Spaceballs.
I interpret the “As you wish” at the end as the grandfather telling his grandson he is the person he loves the most in the world, that he would do anything for.
Every time I watch this movie, from the very first time when it had just come out in the theaters, the ending always makes me misty-eyed. The grandfatherly "as you wish", which he earlier explained meant "I love you", gets me every time. ❤
Like many have recommended already, "Stardust" is the next fantasy/comedy/heartwarming movie you should watch. Again, as others have said, it is the "Princes Bride" for the next generation. And, I'm glad you liked Princess Bride! It is nearly the perfect movie! It is certainly a very quotable movie. "Inconceivable!" Love you two!
Tom Hanks is iconic as Forrest Gump. I would recommend "Big" as someone's first Tom Hanks movie, however. It's absolutely charming and is a perfect starting point to experience his range as an actor.
That fencing scene is one of the best ever. They trained for months with two legends in fencing, who had worked in films for a long time, including doing a lot of choreography for Star Wars and with older swashbuckling movie stars. Those long takes where you could just watch them fence without all the quick edits they might do today is just great.
I was in Philosophy Club in college, and the Fencing Club met at the same time in the same pizza place. One of the members of the Fencing Club was the brother of one of thw members of the Philosophy Club (still friends with both of them, almost 30 years later,) so after official business, the two clubs pushed our tables together and were one big group. They would talk about the accuracy and the eloquence of this scene (and how Thibault actually does cancels out Capo Ferro!)
Cary Elwes did it with a broken toe as well (Andre the giant wanted Elsie’s to try out his four wheeler and Elwes smashed his foot on a rock.) Rob Reiner actually pushed back filming the duel a couple of days to give his toe more time to heal.
This is one of those cases where the book AND the movie are both practically perfect. The book is written from the premise that the author has been looking for this book that he remembers being read to him and finally gets a copy and realizes that his father read him an abridged version because the original was dry and wasn't that great, so he is publishing that abridged story but constantly references the original version (which doesn't actually exist). It gives extra backstory to the characters. If you love the movie, you'll love the book.
Stars Julia Robert's, Dolly Parton and Sally Fields, Shirley MacLaine (so funny) among other well known Hollywood actors at the time. Another movie set in the south is Green Fried Tomatoes. Drama too. Bit of a mystery in it too. 1990's If you want true southern influence, then you need to watch 2 movies released in 1958. One is Cat On The Hot Tin Roof starring Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor. The other is The Long Hot Summer starring Paul Newman again and Joanne Woodward, who later married him in real life. Both were written by a very well known Southern playwright called Tennessee Williams. Both are dramas. I highly recommend both.
I never get tired of the visual comedy of seeing Wallace Shawn's 5ft 2in next to Andre the Giant's 7ft 4in.... and you can just tell that everyone was having such a great time making this story come to life. Love it, love it!!
My roommate in college introduced me to this movie. When I heard the title I thought it was a Lovey Dovey movie too. He gave the same sales pitch on it that Grandpa did for the kid. I was amazed at how funny this movie was. I bought a copy for my daughter on her 3rd birthday which is a week before mine, and every year during our birthday's we still watch it. She still gets as excited when watching this, like it was her first time all over again, and she just turned 19 last month, her ol' softy Dad just turned 56. She loves Fezig(Andre) the Giant still, of course. She knew who he was right away, because we watched WWE together. Including reruns of old classic matches.
The movie Stardust. It has a ton of well known actors and it is definitely worth the watch! To be honest, it looked a little too much like a love story to me but my husband talked me into it and I loved it. I’m betting y’all will too. Love the movie reactions that you’re going. Great job!
For any waffling on the film, it's based on a graphic novel by Neil Gaiman ("American Gods", etc. He, Alan Moore, and Frank Miller are pretty much responsible for turning comics into a respected and serious medium, to the point of having entire multi-year university courses devoted to their work). It's also written by the two people who co-wrote "Kick-Ass" and a bunch of other crazy-innovative stuff, and directed by one of them, who also happens to be the guy who directed "Kick-Ass", etc., as well as producing "Snatch". If that doesn't convince you it's more than a paint-by-numbers love story, I don't know what will.
So glad you guys watched this classic! Sadly it was near the end of Andre the Giant's career while filming. He had severe pain and issues with his back.He really wanted to finish filming, and they did all they could to make him comfortable
He also loved the movie; he was so proud of it. He kept a VHS of it with him everywhere he went and was eager to watch it with anyone who hadn't seen it yet.
I'm sure he had pain most of his life (plus a legendary alcohol problem), but this wasn't near the end of his career. He wrestled for at least 6 more years after this.
One of my favorite movies ever! To this day, whenever someone is off on any type of adventure, no matter how big or small, my chosen response is "Have fun storming the castle!" lol
Robin Wright said that during filming it was so cold at night but Andre’s hands were so big he could palm her entire neck and head with one hand to help keep her warm. She said he had the biggest heart onset despite the pain he was in while filming
Hitting the like only because there no love button. One of the greatest movies of all time. Soooo many quotable lines. Just bought tickets for my anniversary for Cary Elwes touring around showing the movie then doing a QA session.
Yes, Please...I just rewatched with my Granddaughter, she loved it...Rob Riener great director. Another Rob movie Stand By Me...coming of age, classic...From Steven Kings book.
The perfect movie. There is something for everyone. Not only a love story between the characters but also between the grandpa and the kid (hence the as you wish line at the end that tears me up every time). Lots of life lessons. Just perfect.
By the way, Inigo Montoya was played by the actor Mandy Patinkin. His father died of cancer shortly before they shot the final sword duel scene. The one in which he says, "I want my father back, you son of a bitch." In case you're wondering where the intensity in that line came from.
Common online story but Mandy Patinkin said his father passed away when he was 18, so he could really identify with the character and really wanted the part because of it.
I'm a 52 year old man, and this is my FAVORITE movie! I wore out at least 2 VHS tapes of this movie, back in the day. I have seen it so many times, I can practically voice the entire movie. The scenes with Andre The Giant were murder on him, his back was Soooo bad!
Out of a list of all my favourite movies ever, THE PRINCESS BRIDE is a gem. It's a classic. Timeless. Love it. Great cast, great story. Funny. Some real life heavy heart moments ie. The loss of Andre, the loss of Mandy Patinkin's father and the significance of his "I Want my father back" line. Such a great movie.
My Cousin Vinny- J/A, if you want to stay with the comedies and love sarcasm, man this movie is so recommended. One of the funniest movies of all time and also many quotable lines come from this movie. Many law firms use this movie explaining legal procedures cause this movie did it so well. Love to see you add this one to your list of future reactions!
loved watching your reaction to this. when Wesley reveals himself after Buttercup pushes him down the hill...the looks on your faces when you realized who he was was priceless! this is one of my favorite movies of all time. it has everything you could ever want, including a happy ending.
I'm 38. I quote this movie at least once a day. hahahaha I remember staying home sick from school watching this movie. Andre the Giant is a legend and a teddy bear in real life. He was a wrestler in the 70s and when he was cast in this movie everyone was so excited. This is one of the greatest and funniest movies ever and from my childhood.
I probably love this movie more as a grown man than I did as a kid, because I've reached an age where nostalgia can be very powerful. It's been a part of my life almost as far back as I can remember, and I never get tired of it no matter how many times I watch it.
At the time it was released, the studio didn't know how to market it because they have to put their product in a known box to promote it. Comedy? Sure. Love story? Sure. Adventure? Sure. But it quickly gained a cult following. There are so many people who can recite every line along with the movie. I'm so glad you liked it. If you'd like more comedy: Monty Python and the Holy Grail for absurdist/surreal British comedy. Galaxy Quest for having fun with the genre of Star Trek and other space-type shows.
Before it opened, there was a special showing for the North American Science Fiction Convention (NaSFiC) in Phoenix, Arizona. It was a huge success with that audience, as you might well believe.
@@tarynkirchen5961 I completely agree with you. With his movies you have to be able to not take things seriously and just laugh. What is his one movie I think it's "History of the World.
This right here is my childhood. I went to see this a BUNCH of times as a kid, it was this and Willow and Ladyhawke and The Last Starfighter and Krull and Masters of the Universe and the Indiana Jones movies, I just loved my fun and slightly irreverent action adventure movies.
This is probably my all-time favorite movie! I have loved this one since I first saw it in the late '80's. It's as close to a perfect movie as it gets. Thanks for doing this one!
A company had started making noises about re-making The Princess Bride. Carey Elwes tweeted 'There's a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one.' Best shut-down ever.
Filmed in Ireland. The "Cliffs of Insanity" are in reality The Cliffs of Moher, in County Clare - an incredibly gorgeous place in Ireland! I just KNEW you'd love this movie!
I'm so glad you two reacted to this movie. I swear you're the only YT reactors who didn't figure out the "pirate" was Westley until the reveal. Oh and in interviews Andre the giant always said he so happy he was part of this movie. He truly is a gentle giant (RIP). Rob Reiner was the director and he did a few other great 80's movies. If you can convince Rob to watch a romcom, When Harry Met Sally is a great 80's movie directed by Rob and has enough comedy and story to entertain men as well as women.
Rob has also directed two of the absolute best Stephen King adaptations ever: "Stand by Me" (definitely non-horror and a wonderful film) and "Misery" (horror with mostly just two characters and an amazing performance by Kathy Bates).
I loved that they didn't figure out Westley was the "man in black" before the reveal. So many movie reactors spend their entire watch time trying to guess everything that's going to happen in every movie (to the point that I stopped watching some of them bc it got a little annoying) but I feel like J&A just live in the moment of each movie and experience it as it happens. It's refreshing and, tbh, kinda sweet.
@@johnplaysgames3120 Agreed! I just hope Amber lightens up a bit. Comedy, wether a Dark Satire or a “dad joke”. You’re going to hit a sexual joke sooner or later. Much like the saying “dance like no one is watching”. Don’t take a comedy too seriously because that’s the entire point of laughter.
One of my all time favorites!!!!!! had every line memorized . A great Rom/com comedy that is not too sappy for Jay but has a lot of great quotable lines and DIRECTED BY SAME DIRECTOR as The Princess Bride is When Harry Met Sally. Great reaction!!
In case you did not realize it . This soundtrack was composed by Mark Knopfler the lead influence in the band Dire Straits! Mark Knopfler was an amazing guitarist and musician! This was a wonderful film for everyone! So many stellar performances and actors and a touching story!
Probably one of my favorite movies of all time. After this came out, everyone was saying "Hello. My name is Indogo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die". Glad you reacted to this one. Men typically balk at watching it cause they think it's just a love story. Then they love it when they actually watch it. It was funny watching you two getting upset when you thought Wesley died and again when you thought Indigo Montoya died... you sounded like the little boy in the movie who didn't want to hear the book in the first place and then got all upset when he thought Wesley died. 😄
Saw it in the original cinema run in 1987. Bought it on VHS when it came out (and VHS was EXPENSIVE back then). Got it on DVD. Went to the re-releases and quote-along showings at the cinema over the years. Yeah, I love this movie. One of my Top 5 all-time favourites. It gives me great joy.
You guys are going to watch this one again and again. Another one you might like that I haven't seen suggested is The Blues Brothers (1980). The music is great and the amount of celebrity cameos is inconceivable.
This is one of my absolutely favorite movies! The Princess Bride was a book written by William Goldman who also wrote the screenplay for the movie. He wrote the part of the giant with Andre the giant in mind. The fencing scenes are some of my favorite scenes in the movie. Some really big name actors and comedians are in the movie. Mandy Patinkin(film and tv star), the legendary Peter Falk(film and tv star), Christopher Guest(the six fingered man), Chris Sarandon, Billy Crystal(Miracle Max), Carol Kane(Max's wife),Fred Savage(The Wonder Years tv show), Carey Elwes, Robin Wright Penn(her first major role),etc. Rob Reiner was the director. He also directed the movie Stand By Me. Robin Wright tells a sweet story about Andre the giant when they were filming that he put his hand over her head to keep her warm in between scenes. It was so big that it completely covered her head.
And, even though he wrote it, he was So Into watching it while they were filming that he actually got surprised and yelled out when her dress caught on fire.🤭
One of my most favorite films of all time. Glad you loved it too. Another fantasy based film that has everything (fighting, love story, witty comedy) would be Ladyhawke with Michelle Pfeiffer, Matthew Broderick and Rudger Hauer.
Thank you for remembering Ladyhawke! It is indeed a hugely overlooked gem. My kids grew up with both of those movies and they remained firm favourites. As they grew up, every potential boy/ girl friend had to undergo Princess Bride and Ladyhawke test. No hope for those who didn't pass.
One of my favorite movies, and the most quotable movie ever! I'm so glad you got to finally see it. I think my kids are about your age, and they have seen it so many times that they have the script pretty much memorized.
Great reaction! The book is also EXCELLENT and has a LOT more about Inigo and Fezzik than made it into the movie. Really, The Princess Bride is one of those rare movies that is as good as the book it's based on. Christopher Guest, who plays Count Rugen (the six-fingered man) is an incredible actor. He disappeared so fully into the role of Count Rugen that at the cast party after they were done filming, Rob Reiner (the director, who had worked with Guest and been friends with him for YEARS) saw him there at the party and thanked him for coming out to support the film, having forgotten that he was IN THE FILM! Another incredible film from those great talents is This is Spinal Tap. Spinal Tap is to "rocumentary" movies what The Princess Bride is to fairytale romance movies. One more little tidbit of trivia about these films: when William Goldman (the writer of both the book and the screenplay) contacted Mark Knopfler (of Dire Straits) asking him to compose the score for The Princess Bride, Knopfler said he'd do it -- on one condition. His condition was that the hat Rob Reiner wore in This is Spinal Tap had to appear somewhere on the set of The Princess Bride. So, you can see it on the wall of the kid's room, the hat from This is Spinal Tap.
This has been a favorite of mine since it came out. I have passed it down to my kids (who are now in college and high school) and they insist that their friends watch it. The quotes float around the house all the time. We also hold our breaths when Westley dives into the lightning sand, to see if we can hold our breaths that long.
This is probably one of my all time favorite movies, true love, swordfights, giants, monsters. It's truly a masterpiece. I am so glad you didn't see the Wesley reveal coming, made it so much better. Also Death cannot stop true love is a great line and great forshadowing. Kind of surprised you forgot As you wish also means I love you. That is what the grandpa was saying.
I love this movie. I really wish you would do Raiders of the lost arc. Has Harrison Ford in it. Great action movie with some comedy in it. Any film he has done was always really good 👍
"A Knight's Tail"... would go well with the vibe you guys got going.... it is Music, Sword Play, Knights and Jousting, with a BEAUTIFUL Love story and a coming from the dirt to top story.
I remember so clearly the first time I saw this (nearly twenty-five years ago!), and how hard I laughed throughout. It was in high school, as our English teacher had decided we should write a review of it as a fun end-of-year project. She knew it so well she was suppressing laughter before the jokes even happened. I have since seen it hundreds of times, and it never gets old. Somehow, though it's simply written, it's comic genius, and it is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen.

I hate when people think it means the grandpa is Wesley. There was no mention of immortality in the story :P
@@godmagnus Nobody here said that; the implication is that Columbo was saying "I love you" to Fred Savage.
Andre the giant said this was one of his most proud achievements. He absolutely loved how the movie came out.
I'm just glad he was able to be immortalized in such a classic film and character. RIP Andre, he had a big heart both literally and figuratively.
He was such a sweet character in this movie. You would never have known how much pain he was in. You can find the interview with the cast and see how much they loved him,and everything he had going on.😪
I think he forced Leaping Lanny Poffo to watch it like 20 times or something.
Mandy Patinkin, the actor who played Inigo Montoya, had lost his own father, so the line "I want my father back" was especially meaningful to him. You can feel that he put his heart into it. For fans this is one of his most memorable roles for a reason!
It was such a personal moment for him, he dropped the accent and said it in his true voice.

Funnily enough it took me this long to figure out that Inigo Montoya was played by Mandy Patinkin - and I love Criminal Minds lol

If there is ONE movie in Hollywood history that must NEVER be remade - it's The Princess Bride.
Except for being redone by the casts of other franchises, like The Muppets.
I would add Casablanca to that list. Watch it and see what I mean.
Considered one of the greatest stories on film. It is "inconceivable" that a lot of families have never seen it.
You keep saying that word, I don’t think it means what you think it means.
It is actually a silly movie, but has some good scenes in it.
@@hrussell9677 So to you, something silly can't also be great? How sad.
They didn't know how to advertise it when it first came out (because it was in so many genres - romance, adventure, humor, ...) with the result that it went under the radar for a long time. This is how good movies get turned into "cult classics."
truly. "inconceivable"....you killed my Father, prepare to die
"The Greatest Love Story Ever Told" isn't just about Wesley and Buttercup, it is also Inigo Montoya's love for his father and the love of the Grandpa to his grandson...such a classic!
Second best love story. The best ever told is Tolkien's Beren and Luthien.
Tinuviel
It's about all the kinds of love, not just romantic. It's beautiful.
And the love between friends! The way Inigo and the Giant support each other...
Cary Elwes, who played Wesley, wrote a book about the making of the movie. Basically, it sounded like a dream experience, and Andre the Giant truly was a gentle giant.
Cary also did an audio book version that makes it so much more special. The title of his book is As you wish❤️❤️❤️
I met Cary Elwes three years ago at our comicon and such an amazing person and we bought his book which he autographed
Yes I just read the book, "As You Wish" by Cary Elwes with quotes from other cast members and stories from behind the scenes of the movie. I loved it!

The Princess Bride is almost a secret code for some of us movie fans. Saying 'as you wish' or 'inconceivable!' will often get a reaction. And great reaction from you guys. Glad you enjoyed it.
Just last Sunday, someone at church said that Lazarus was only "mostly dead."

Shawn Basil, just goes to prove, we're all 9 year olds inside our heads...
Just like the grandson in the framing story ...

@@reneeg9406 🤣😜
It was such a good illustration of the whole "meta" angle of the project. This could have just been a run-of-the-mill fantasy movie (although certainly one of the better ones), but using the framing device of the grandpa and grandson and employing Savage as a stand-in for the audience took it to another level.
@@michaelccozens And such a good stand-in for the audience too. Watching reactions to this movie, the interruptions ALWAYS line up with how the person watching was feeling lol

@@pawsnclaws1 -- It was kinda cringe, but what's with the "woke" thing? They're just people.

I agree Conan and Highlander are great movies, I doubt Amber would be able to handle the violence. Jay might. :-)
Definitely would recommend Highlander
I loved 'LadyHawk' and 'The Never Ending Story'.........
The Labtinth with David Bowe
LadyHawk. Holy hell, that's a blast from the past.
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is one of the top 10 movies of all time . IMHO

But they missed "Have fun storming the castle" 😆

@@sandman_says_runrunner4701 I don't think silliness is a bad thing. A movie can be silly but still respectable among other things.

I just saw a video yesterday, where a professional swordsman ranked that as one of most realistic swordfighting scenes ever in cinema.

If you want true southern influence, then you need to watch 2 movies released in 1958. One is Cat On The Hot Tin Roof starring Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor. The other is The Long Hot Summer starring Paul Newman again and Joanne Woodward, who later married him in real life.

"Romancing the Stone" Is another classic you should check out
One of the most rewatchable movies ever. Still enjoy it 30 something years later.
This right here is my childhood. I went to see this a BUNCH of times as a kid, it was this and Willow and Ladyhawke and The Last Starfighter and Krull and Masters of the Universe and the Indiana Jones movies, I just loved my fun and slightly irreverent action adventure movies.
LADYHAWKE!!
Rob also directed A Few Good Men
One of my all time favorites!!!!!! had every line memorized . A great Rom/com comedy that is not too sappy for Jay but has a lot of great quotable lines and DIRECTED BY SAME DIRECTOR as The Princess Bride is When Harry Met Sally. Great reaction!!
I'll have *whatever* she's having!
@@robbob5302 Yes! Yes! Yes!
That’s a real book! It’s wonderful, funny, and fantastic. And you can read it to the girls 😊
In case you did not realize it . This soundtrack was composed by Mark Knopfler the lead influence in the band Dire Straits!
Mark Knopfler was an amazing guitarist and musician!
This was a wonderful film for everyone! So many stellar performances and actors and a touching story!
Wow, I didn't know that. And I can totally see it.
The moment I saw the thumbnail, I knew that you guys were gonna go crazy over it!
Yep, one of my favs as well. I can't tell you how many times I've watched this movie. So iconic! INCONCEIVABLE!
The grandpaw saying "As you wish" was an indirect "I love you" to his grandson 🥺
As you wish = If you want = I love you
You guys are going to watch this one again and again. Another one you might like that I haven't seen suggested is The Blues Brothers (1980). The music is great and the amount of celebrity cameos is inconceivable.
*THE BLUUUUUUES BROTHERS* 😎😎
I LOVE this movie! I love how they set out to make a parody of sappy love stories and ended up making an epic love story! 😂
Hardly anyone mentions Ladyhawke these days but it was an awesome movie.
Shrek pays subtle homage to Princess Bride and Ladyhawke.
OMG, yes, Ladyhawke! Can one even find it anymore? 😕
@@NavvyMom I have seen it available streaming on Disney + . There are also DVD'S for sale on eBay for $10 - 15.
@@Katrina-mi2gm Thanks! Good to know.
My family quotes this movie all the time!! So glad you found this treasure!
It's inconceivable that anyone who has seen this movie would not quote it all the time.
I love this movie. I watched by myself, with my girls, and my son. Now I watch it all the time with my grandson and granddaughter
That is what the grandpa was saying.
don't forger comedic timing. This film is great at that as well.
"Ever After" is a great "chick flick" that my husband had me watch!😂 It's probably my favorite takes on Cinderella💞
Mine too!
Ever After is really good.
I love this movie. I really wish you would do Raiders of the lost arc. Has Harrison Ford in it. Great action movie with some comedy in it. Any film he has done was always really good 👍
Sooooooooo good 👌🏼👌🏼
Yessss!
Princess Bride is a classic. With lots of lines to repeat in life.
