The grandfather was played by Peter Falk. He played “rumpled detective” Columbo in 69 episodes from seven seasons and 24 television movies from 1971 to 2003. Columbo would interview suspects who often were amused by his unassuming, disorganized appearance. They were relieved when he started to go, but then he’d turn around and say, “Just one more thing . . .” Peter Falk was one of those actors who seemed to be loved by everyone.
This movie has perhaps the last great fencing duel at the style of the Hollywood golden era, it's sort of a homage to Errol Flynn and Guy Williams and Mandy Patinkin and Cary Elwes simply nailed it. I sincerely love the chivalry of the two characters they play. Subscribed!

Check out Viggo Mortensen's film "Alatriste" to see the kind of thing Bob really liked to sink his teeth into. (It was his last film as sword master.) There you'll see sword fighting as it really was - two guys going at each other with REALLY big knives!
I've been watching since I was 9. Between 88 -99 I probably watched it 4-10 times a year depending on the year. Since then probably 30 times start to finish, plus leaving it on if I come across it flipping channels, plus about 60 or so reaction channels. The idea of possibly getting tired of it: inconceivable 🥰
I went to see it when it came out at the theaters. I was in college and I kind of got dragged into it because, as a guy, the title really turned me off. When I left the theater that night, I don't think I had ever been more satisfied in such an unexpected way from a movie. It's so perfect. Later me and some of my fraternity brothers were watching HBO and this came on and I was the only one in the group who had seen it and everyone else wanted to change the channel. (Princess Bride? No way). I convinced them to watch it and then every time it would come on, people would say "It's on again!" and guys would show up to rewatch it. This movie just has that effect on people.
Also if you listen carefully he says the final sentence without an accent. Years earlier his lost his own father to cancer and he used that as if he was saying it to the cancer that killed his father

Andre the Giant was 7 ft 4 in. and 520 lbs. His hands were so big, he could hold a can of beer, and you wouldn't even know it. It would disappear in his hand. Robin Wright (Buttercup) told a story about how, when filming, there were times when it was cold and that between takes, he would put his hand on her head and it would cover her whole head and keep her warm. While he was immensely imposing in the wrestling ring, he was said to be the nicest guy. Speaking of beer, it's been said that he drank 119 cans of beer in one sitting. When asked later on if he got drunk, he said he couldn't remember because he passed out. lol

Fezzik you may or may not recognize as 1980s pro wrestling great Andre The Giant who sadly passed away at just 46 years old in January of 1993 due Acromegaly which resulted in him having gigantism resulting in his abnormally large size. Mandy Patinkin, who plays Inigo Montoya, when seen killing Count Rugen and uttering the words, “I Want My Father Back You Son Of Bitch”, was apparently thinking of his father and the cancer that killed him thus the reason he says the words with such heart and conviction.

When they first tried to get him in the movie they found he was scheduled to perform a wrestling match in japan in which he was getting paid 5 million dollars and because they couldnt match that salary he couldnt perform the role. Luckily the match got cancelled and andre was able to perform it.
Inigo Montoya survives the dagger to the belly because, before he gave the miracle pill to Westley on the battlement, he kissed the pill, so he got just a tad of Miracle Max's miracle medicine.
There are so many neat anecdotes from this film. Stories like the cast and crew being surprised by how much Andre the Giant could consume, both eating and drinking. And then there's when Rob Reiner having to stop filming because of Billy Crystal cracking everyone up by his improv lines during the Miracle Max scenes. And to think, it was basically a flop in the theaters.

It was advertised very ineffectively -- the studio didn't know how to promote its mix of genres -- and so it played out a standard run in theaters and went away. It was really the relatively new medium of home video that brought it to life, as people started to share it with friends, and then parents with children. And so it's sneaked into becoming a classic ever since.
This is one of my favorites. I watched it when it first came out in 87. I watched it begrudgingly, I didn't like romantic comedies, when I was a child. However this movie changed my heart. Now it's a favorite.
Humperdinck is clearly one of the inspirations for Lord Farquad in 'Shrek'. Yes, it's cheesy, but they know it's cheesy and don't try to pretend it's not. It's perfectly paced with the Grandpa 'reading the good bits' with occasional interruption from the Grandson.

The actors who played Westley (Cary Elwes) and Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) studied with a fencing master for months in order to make that cliff duel as realistic as possible. They would practice on set between takes. They got so goid at fencing that the scene they scripted ended up being too short so they extended it give more time to focus on the duel. All that practice paid off in real life for Cary Elwes since he would later star in Robin Hood: Men In Tights by Mel Brooks. According to Elwes, when Count Rugen (Christopher Guest), the evil six-fingered man, knocks Westley out in order to capture him and return Buttercup (Robin Wright) to Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), Elwes ended up getting knocked out for real. As he recalls in As You Wish, the take wasn't really working because Guest, who was holding a real metal sword, was being too gentle so as not to hurt Elwes, which was preventing him from reacting and ruining the timing. After a while, Elwes made a simple suggestion - why didn't Guest just tap Elwes on the head with the sword for real so that he could react? Elwes explained: "Chris [Guest] swung the heavy sword down toward my head. However, as fate would have it, it landed just a touch harder than either of us anticipated. And that, folks, was the last thing I remember from that day's shoot. Elwes reveals that, unfortunately, Guest really put him in the hospital: "I woke up in the emergency room, still in costume, to the frightening sound of stitches being sewn into my skull ... and of course Chris felt absolutely terrible about the whole thing, even though I kept telling him it wasn't his fault. It was my dumb idea. But you know what? That particular take was the one that ended up in the film. So when you see Westley fall to the ground and pass out, that's not acting. That's an overzealous actor actually losing consciousness."

I've asked a lot of people whether they prefer the book or the movie, and it's almost always whichever they encountered first. I think the Zoo of Death from the book is better than the Pit of Despair, but the grandfather in the movie is much better than the sad dad in the book.

In reality, Goldman didn't have a son. He had two daughters, and when he once asked them what his next book should be about, one said "a princess" and the other said "a bride." Just having kissed the miracle pill before giving it to Wesley allowed Inigo to regain his strength after being hit by the knife. It was a powerful miracle.
One of the, few, perfect movies out there. Nothing needs, ever, be changed. I love when Venzinni has the battle of wits with Wesley, the cup change, actually, had a reason. He was watching Wesley's reaction when told to drink from his own cup. When he didn't hesitate to drink, he took that to mean that his, original, cup wasn't poisoned, so Venzinni could drink safely. Good try, but he lost the battle of wits the moment he agreed to play.
Engelbert Humperdinck (1854 - 1921) was a German composer - perhaps most famous for the opera Hansel and Gretel. However, most of us know the name because it is the stage name of a very popular singer (real name Arnold George Dorsey) from the late 50's onward and still active today. His most well known songs are "After the Lovin'" and "This Moment in Time" - well worth checking out if you've never heard them.

We should have more civilized adversarial relationships like Westkey's and Inigo's in movies. Like, "Hmm, this guy's a good fighter, it'd be a shame to kill him too quickly, but lets see how good he is. Maybe he'll be honorable and leave me alive if i lose as a professional courtesy.....yes, I think that's respectable, but still, I'l try not to lose." You know, that kind of thing? lol
I'd read the book a few months before I saw the movie on opening night. This is in the top 5 of my favorite book-to-movie adaptations. It's a great read!
Great reaction again, to a great movie. Fun fact if no one has mentioned it yet - the actress who played Buttercup (Robin wright) is the same actress who plays Wonder Woman's (Gal Gadot) aunt (Antiope) and trains her to fight.

If you liked this one, another good comedy from Rob Reiner and Christopher Guest is "This is Spinal Tap". One of the funniest films of its era, and the satire is dead-on.
I have a t-shirt that has one of those "Hello my name is..." stickers that you get at conferences or reunions and it has "Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die" written on it. Almost every time I wear it, I get some kind of funny comment.

Just make sure you’ve seen Robin Hood Prince of Thieves before since it’s a parody of that. He’s also been in Twister, Liar Liar, Saw and a bunch more.
I first saw this in the theater when it came out. I went in with a lot of trepidation. I loved the book and hoped they wouldn't botch it up too badly. I needn't have worried. William Goldman, the author of the book, also did the screenplay. The movie is also a success due to the director and cast. Goldman attended the shooting of some of the scenes in the Fire Swamp. He got so into it that, when the burst of flame set Robin Wright's dress on fire, he jumped to his feet and screamed, 'Oh, my God! Her dress is on fire!', runinig the take. William Goldman was an accomplished screenplay writer with numerous films like 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' and 'All the President's Men' to his credit.
Both the book and screenplay were written by the late great William Goldman. I enjoyed the book, but this is the rare instance where the movie was better.
1987 I went back into the US Army after a 15 year break ...I suspect I was focused on other things at the time. Honestly .. I am not sure if I have ever watched the actual movie .. but lots of reviews. That has to say something about how we experience things these days .. this movie has for me been seen through the eyes of the reviewers.
Never heard of it? You must of had very square parents. My 4 kids all now in their 30’s can probably quote it line by line since we saw it so many times. But better late than never to see one of the greatest movies ever made. 😃

The movie was ten times better to those who knew Peter Falk (the grandfather) from the television series Colombo. If you ever get the opportunity to watch an episode, do so. Any episode. You can thank me later.
Definitely not Christmas. The boy, the mother, and the father are all Jewish, as was the writer of the book/screenplay William Goldman. The character of the grandfather was based on the author’s own father.
Andre the Giant was one of the nicest guys, and had a strong moral compass; when he was wrestling, he'd beat the hell out of the other wrestlers in the ring who would treat the jobbers badly (the guys who came in for the side bouts who were supposed to lose to the headliners in those matches), and especially Macho Man Randy Savage for the way he abused his wife. He was an upstanding guy. On the set of this film, one day he let out the loudest, longest fart ever produced by a human, bringing production to a standstill. After the last echoes faded, Rob Reiner, the director, asked "Are you ok?" "I am now, boss" Andre replied :P
It's to confound copyright bots, don't be dense. If you want to watch the whole film yourself go do that, this is a reaction so it's assumed you have already seen it.

I can't remember the first time I watched this movie. I've lost count of the times I've seen it. It is one of the most re-watchable movies ever.

chris sarandon has such great range. he's great as humperdink, he's also Jack Skellington, and he's still my favorite vampire from FRIGHT NIGHT.(1985)

I love when Venzinni has the battle of wits with Wesley, the cup change, actually, had a reason. He was watching Wesley's reaction when told to drink from his own cup. When he didn't hesitate to drink, he took that to mean that his, original, cup wasn't poisoned, so Venzinni could drink safely. Good try, but he lost the battle of wits the moment he agreed to play.

Engelbert Humperdinck (1854 - 1921) was a German composer - perhaps most famous for the opera Hansel and Gretel.
However, most of us know the name because it is the stage name of a very popular singer (real name Arnold George Dorsey) from the late 50's onward and still active today. His most well known songs are "After the Lovin'" and "This Moment in Time" - well worth checking out if you've never heard them.

If you liked this one, another good comedy from Rob Reiner and Christopher Guest is "This is Spinal Tap". One of the funniest films of its era, and the satire is dead-on.
Also "Best in Show". Christopher Guest doesn't have just one type of character that he plays. He's completely different in every movie he's in.

@@tktopmovies Not sure if you recognize the actor playing Wesley, it’s Cary Elwes. He’s been in Robin Hood Men in Tights, a must see Mel Brooks film. Just make sure you’ve seen Robin Hood Prince of Thieves before since it’s a parody of that. He’s also been in Twister, Liar Liar, Saw and a bunch more.

I first saw this in the theater when it came out. I went in with a lot of trepidation. I loved the book and hoped they wouldn't botch it up too badly. I needn't have worried. William Goldman, the author of the book, also did the screenplay. The movie is also a success due to the director and cast. Goldman attended the shooting of some of the scenes in the Fire Swamp. He got so into it that, when the burst of flame set Robin Wright's dress on fire, he jumped to his feet and screamed, 'Oh, my God! Her dress is on fire!', runinig the take.
William Goldman was an accomplished screenplay writer with numerous films like 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' and 'All the President's Men' to his credit.
Ruining the take?! Ahhh! LOL! That whole fire swamp scene was good! Awesome movie, no doubt about that! Thanks for watching with us Paul :)
Both the book and screenplay were written by the late great William Goldman. I enjoyed the book, but this is the rare instance where the movie was better.

1987 I went back into the US Army after a 15 year break ...I suspect I was focused on other things at the time. Honestly .. I am not sure if I have ever watched the actual movie .. but lots of reviews. That has to say something about how we experience things these days .. this movie has for me been seen through the eyes of the reviewers.

Definitely not Christmas. The boy, the mother, and the father are all Jewish, as was the writer of the book/screenplay William Goldman. The character of the grandfather was based on the author’s own father.

Andre the Giant was one of the nicest guys, and had a strong moral compass; when he was wrestling, he'd beat the hell out of the other wrestlers in the ring who would treat the jobbers badly (the guys who came in for the side bouts who were supposed to lose to the headliners in those matches), and especially Macho Man Randy Savage for the way he abused his wife. He was an upstanding guy.
On the set of this film, one day he let out the loudest, longest fart ever produced by a human, bringing production to a standstill. After the last echoes faded, Rob Reiner, the director, asked "Are you ok?"
"I am now, boss" Andre replied :P
