2019 Dodge Hellcat Redeye vs Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 // Horsepower Wars

- Опубліковано 6 лют 2025
- James and Thomas take the new 2019 Dodge Challenger Hellcat and pit it against the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. They are both supercharged V8s, and both are RWD. One provides 797 hp of pure muscle, the other a 650hp performance machine. The boys explore the cars driving dynamics and what they are like to live with every day. Can the sportiness and lightness of the ZL1 overcome its...visibility and power shortcomings against the Challenger? Exterior and interior styling comparisons help figure out which one takes it in the looks department, and the back roads do the rest. Watch to see the outcome. SUBSCRIBE!

Exciting news! If you haven't watched it already, we followed this video up with a track video of these two vehicles! The link to that is in the description of THIS video.
When possible, can we get a ZL1 1LE vs C8 with the Z51 Package track test? Battle of the Chevy sports cars :)

OMG LoL! The WORST "Car genie" ever =D
Look at the fenders it’s da redeye widebody
Dodge did keep true to it's roots tho. It's a muscle car. Chevy and Mustang went the sporty route.
not being able to handle corners and not knowing how to make a car do so, is not staying true, its just not knowing better
@@gherasimtibi Its a muscle car. It's not meant to corner, it's meant to go fast in a straight line

@@2averagenoobs108 that i understand, i get its purpose, but u cant give them credit saying they are staying true to the muscle car roots, dodge has never made a car that can corner, thats a fact, they just dont know how to, so by default it remains more of a "muscle car"
@@2averagenoobs108 and the viper sux, the only good cornering viper is the new ACR, which is double the price of a hellcat, so given the tools at double the budget they made a good dandling car
The camaro screen slants down to prevent glare, and does its job pretty well. Also the challengers purple color is called “plum crazy” and it’s gorgeous

Had a chance to drive the hellcat, GT350R, a 2014 GT500, and ZL1. Bought the ZL1. What you get for the price is insane. All absolutely gorgeous cars and do not dislike any of them.
That's quite the list of amazing cars to have driven. Congrats on your ZL1 I just bought a 13' GT500 two months ago. I can't believe these types of hp is legal on the streets.
Matthew LaRock I wish I could drive each of them dude you are blessed. I own a 2017 camaro SS and like challengers and mustangs too. I never understand the hate but I do like the friendly competition
I agree I had 17gt350, 18 hellcat, the bought the 2019 Zl1 1LE, you get everything with the zl1 1le
Dude as a die hard Chevy man u all ways get more for yo money when it comes to performance.and the good thing about chevrolet is u still can work on it.if u are a gear head and don't mine getting yo hands dirty
In the long run you will have wished you would have purchased the Hellcat Monster, but that Monster is not for everyone just me being Mopar Hemi powered supercharger trans lock line lock inter cooler etc etc ........

The ZL1 is honestly massively underrated. Everyone either chooses the Hellcat because it's got 700 hp or the Cobra because it's a Cobra
My scat basically a hellcat 😂
@Robert Dunn ya it's just over 200 hp off. Almost...
gm alpha chassis is the best in its class. And wwho in there right mind would think a hellcat is good for speed when with a driver they weigh 4600lb, thats fucking insane. thats as much as some pickup trucks
Underrated if seen from competition perspective but not at all massively

The funny thing is that most folks. MOST of us that buy these cars DONT bring them to the track. Truth. Yes. We race but we don’t risk our cars to play race car driver lol. So this is useful info. Man this Camaro is just perfection lol. Got the refreshed tail lights and kept the front: absolute best of both worlds. Lower cost and man... is it a beast
16-18 taillights are definitely better looking
Mr. James disagree. Just flat boring tail lights like on any car. These have a look of texture to them and the smoked out color giving a shading effect is excellent! Makes this car look that much more expensive when manufacturers take the time to design things like this. Sports cars need cool lights
The tailights are definitely an upgrade on the New camaro. They actually have a design to them rather than the atrocious slits like every other car ever. I got the RS 19 in white so I have the painted front end instead of the SS because I liked the new 2019 RS front Better but definitely not the 19 SS...
All the electronics on the Dodge, scare the crap out of me, especially after a few years, I like the Dodge, but they age in dog years!
That car is ugly as fuck, how could you even think that
I just got a Redeye and my face hurts when I get out of the car because I smile so much. It is the most amazing & incredible experience you can have in a car. If you ever get a chance to drive a Redeye DRIVE IT!
My boys, dropping a video first thing Monday morning. Glad to see the subs continuing to grow fellas, continued success.
I love their honest fear when driving and describing the car.
The production value of Throttle House videos are so tasteful. The balance between perfection and humor. Kudos to you gents!
How do you have 2 cars like this and literally waste your viewers time not doing a standing 1/4, 0-60, rolling race, etc??? The number one priority of anyone who buys these cars is the performance comparison and all you gave viewers was how it was driving around town?? BRUTAL
We have an entire track series. These cars sadly we couldn’t take on the track. Hopefully in the future. Also, the livability and experience of the car is just as important to buyers as which one is minutely faster in a straight line. Which is why we also do road tests.
@@ThrottleHouse I think you should do a poll because I think you would find out quickly the masses would rather know the performance stats and see those comparison rather than you guys trying to describe how the 2 cars are for daily driving...that you would never buy for a daily driver...Both these cars in Canada sell for easily over 100K and not one single person I know who owns either one even ponders commuting to work, the grocery store or the kids baseball games. The people buying these cars are usually also rolling around in a 70K SUV's mon-fri. They roll them out on sunny evenings and weekends, take them to the car meets and some back roads to have a d*ck measuring contest. Then the loser usually goes home, hops online trying to find where he's going to dump his next 5k on performance mods to beat the other guy. Also, your other commenters seem to agree with me. I don't have a youtube page for cars, but I promise you I'm as much into the car scene as anyone from your page is. I know exactly how the consumer market is for people buying these two cars because I am that market as well. Feel free to prove me wrong by posting your UA-cam analytics for this video. I'm assuming the percentage of views who watched this to completion is very small.

I'm a Camaro guy myself. We have a ZL1, and LOVE it...but I also love the Hellcat and cannot deny its power.
The hell cat is a modern lab experiment gone wrong
I definitely love the design of the new challengers especially the demon and hellcat versions. I was never a fan of the new camaros look wise but it seems like it's more stable to drive then the hellcat. If I had a choice I'd definitely go with the hellcat, it just holds so much of the look of the original challenger from the era of true muscle cars. I love it

Just saying but it's a hellcat, not a demon. Hard to Believe that they now released it with more horsepower than the demon.

I bought the 2017 ZL1 (10-speed auto) new in that year and these guys nailed it. It's truly an American sports car - rocket ship. The wife refers to it as "The BEAST". My only complaints are the gas mileage (but I knew that going in) and the front seat bolstering is a VERY tight squeeze, especially for a larger person.
You look like a luxury guy. What you doing in a ZL1? 😅😂

I actually prefer the challengers/chargers with no carbon fiber, the semi gloss abs plastic looks awesome, gives it that old school muscle car feel. I really really like what dodge has done with that entire line up. All this coming from a BMW driver!
Thank god they didn’t mess up the look of the zl1
I am a Chevy guy but I ABSOLUTELY am in love with that 797 HP Redeye
My dad has the 2013 ZL1, the 580 HP beast. I can confidently say it is the best car I've ever driven, and I've driven some lamborghinis, ferraris, almost every Mercedes-Benz, almost every BMW, and every GM, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Ford, and the ZL1 is still the best. Hands Down.
Try and find a 6th gen ZL1 to drive. Even the SS 1LE pretty much keeps up with the 5th gen Z/28 on the track.
@@ender2664 I've also driven the new 2018 SS, it just didn't have the same feel. I used to tint windows and when we would pick up new cars from dealerships and drive them to our shop, we would sort of rate their city driving capabilities, we weren't speeding or like banging gears, just strictly driving them like we would our own cars in the city to see how good they were and the SS just didn't have the same feel as the 5th gen ZL1
Well I used to drive also a 5th gen '14 ZL1, and now a 6th gen Camaro SS. You would be very surprised if you tried the newer Camaro it's lighter and with a n improved new "Alpha" platform for great handling. On the SS1LE & ZL1 you would get the eLSD which is great👍

@Bruce Leroy yes it is. The hellcat is 110% a straight line car. You cannot corner as well as you would with the zl1 or even a corvette. I've driven and reviewed a 6 speed manual hallcat, in the turns you have about 2% confidence in the car because you can feel it slipping already
You can't defeat the laws of physics, no more than you can stretch the capacity of that old Mercedes platform (It's in it's 14th model year!). And the Redeye can't be had with a manual, as FCA is too cheap to make the TR6060 or TR 6070 available in the Charger or Redeye Challenger.

Fun fact, the visible carbon fibre is actually more expensive or rather more difficult to produce. It is really hard to have a perfect looking carbon fibre hood for example. seriously
The RedEye's 797 HP and, with widebody additional weight, weight of 4500lbs puts it equal to the Camaro ZL1'S power to weight ratio. Power to weight is what wins races and a lighter car will always out handle and brake a heavier car .
I would take either car but for the $, and my $, I want the ZL1.
Not exactly,
Red eye lbs per hp: 5.58
ZL1 lbs per hp: 5.94
The ZL1 is more comparable to a standard Hellcat in a straight line; actually the stock Hellcat is faster with drag radials than a stock ZL1 with drag radials (comparing the fastest stock glory runs) Drivers race really. Redeye is a bit faster.
This should be interesting.
Before I watch: Hellcat Redeye - faster in a straight line, ZL1 faster on track and better to drive.

@Rique Ehh...I'd say it's a pretty close tie on that front. The ZL1 has magnetic shocks so it's reasonably comfortable (unless you are talking the 1LE).

Only for the rich. Wasn't like that in the early 70's...everybody could afford what they wanted pretty much. There was 454 LS6 Chevelle, 440-6 Road Runner, Hemi Cuda, 427 Chevelle, 427 'vette convert., Camaro Z28, Camaro SS 350, T/A Challenger, 455 SD T/A Firebird, 396 Nova SS, sick fast Nova SS 350, 440 GTX, (2) AAR 'cudas, 340 Dart Swinger, (3) 383 Road Runners, 455 Olds 442, W30 Olds 442, Boss 302 Mustang, (2) AMX Javelins and numerous other 340 Darts, Dusters, Chevelles, Camaros, Mustangs,...well you get the picture. These were the REAL cars that I remember that could be found cruising the streets on any given night in the early 70's in the puny little farming town I grew up in in upstate NY...population back then about 5+ thousand. These days other than a few new 'vettes being driven around by old guys...you are hard pressed to see any Camaros, Chargers, Mustangs, Challengers other than a very few base 6 cylinder models mostly driven by women. No kid right out of high school can buy ANY of the modern muscle. Back the many could and did. I did...I was one of the AAR cuda's that I still have. So tell me how can you say these are great days for car enthusiasts when all these performance cars are unobtanium for most people and obviously you weren't even thought about yet 50 years ago. Plus the fact you need a masters degree to get the advertised performance from modern iron. back in the 70's you needed a few wrenches. It's called plum crazy purple ! There's one thing you cannot deny Dodge Chrysler and Plymouth beats everyone as far as the color palette hands down . as a matter of fact some of the colors especially on the superbirds were banned in some cities because the psychedelic colors
Yup. I have a Camaro and I love the Dodge colors 😫😛
I have a Green Go T/A 392. Best factory color/sticker package of any Challenger.
The best car channel on UA-cam hands down. And CANADIAN! Big win!
I like that the hellcat is a big comfortable cruiser to complement all that power. It doesn't try to be a proper track car because that's not what it is. Take it on a road trip and have power to spare.
Thomas "this has a catastrophic amount of power....". I don't know why but that made me grin... A LOT.
Heh. I don't find the zl1 attractive in anyway. I like the seats....that's about it. Weird screen angle. It's just not for me. Can't deny it's performance value though!
That Dodge is just Plum Crazy!
Great video Guys. Can't wait to see the ZL1 VS the new Shelby GT500.😳😱
That "Purple" is called Plum Crazy Purple keeping with it's 1970 retro theme... as it was called that back then.
Others are.
Sublime - Bright green
B5 Blue
Sadly this Purple isn't available for 2020 only for 2019 models. They cut the number of optional colors from 14 in 2019 to just 9 for 2020, all the retro colors I mentioned are no-longer available.
When I’m able, I’m getting the HellCat RedEye. Period!!!!!!!!
Plum Crazy, not "purple, purple"
mar7739 lol what ever makes you feel better
@@off-roadnpew2183
Hes right tho 🤔🤔
Go easy on the Canadians. Purple, purple is acceptable from the great white north.
Thankk you!
Car genie: i can give you a car with unlimited horse power
Me: well, give me a car with a 2JZ
He will give you 2FUs
Japan in 80': let's not make powerful cars so people don't kill their selves on the roads.
Dodge now: yes
Dodge is American though.
Oh God OH GOD NOO you have a fortnite profile picture
Naaaaaaaaah..
A hellcat anytime anyday and in a heartbeat
$117,000 vs only $78,000 for ZL1 plus taxes tho. Over $40,000 with taxes less than the Dodge. Sorry, but that as the guys in the video said, it's a no brainer - ZL1. We can blame Dodge for being greedy with their profits on the Red Eye.
LuvKills Slowly yet the regular Hellcat fully loaded beats the ZL1 in straight like performance also and is cheaper than the ZL1. The difference is the Redeye corners better than a regular Hellcat.

Thanks for commenting buddy , but still i'd choose a hellcat without even blinking 😊😊
Mohannad Kutaish good for you
@@Ravenlocke118 that's a lie, zl1 is quicker
An honest and amazing review. Thank you guys.
*Hellcat is beauty and a beast!* A dangerous toy for adults! But great vid and that Camaro aint no joke either!
Good video. Like the red eye love the zl1. I do hope Dodge makes a charger red eye for us family guys.
Red Eye charger? I'm with you.
rumor mill is saying the widebody charger will be so fingers crossed!
@@c.h.9827 ooof..
@@c.h.9827 yeah I saw what looked up a widebody charger online.
Does the hellcat actually have color matching break fluid.....thats so cool!
That intro killed me, LOL!
I think the Hellcat looks WAY better. It still looks like a real muscle car.
Love to see that the American cars are outperforming the over priced imports and exotics for half the price.
Definitely 👍
Ye I’d still take the European sports cars thanks.
