Great review of both cars gentlemen...I can only speak for my own experience owning my 2017 ZL1 but I still absolutely love the car...it’s a sleeper for sure as most people on the road have no clue how much power it makes. I daily a ZL1 with the 6-spd manual and I love the thing. Really my only complaint, as hit upon in this video as well, is that it's not scary enough. It's got incredible performance but it's so "civilized" that it's hard to really feel it until you see the speed on the citation you just received. If I had to purchase it again i'd still pick the camaro over the mustang but it's not due to believing the camaro is necessarily a better car for the same cash. For me it just comes down to personal preference in styling.
Do German, Italian, Japanese or Korean automakers make "affordable" 400 hp, 2+2 sporty cars that don't weight 4000 lbs or so? Nope. Well, maybe if you buy really used ones. Heck, just get a Mustang GT or Camaro SS. They're 3700 lbs.
Light with moderate power is honestly the way to go. I think the main problem is the amount people are expecting to get in terms of amenities and safety.
I actually like both cars. I shopped them both and bought the 350. The sound and the way it revs just won me over. The Camaro is a good car, but I didn't like the sight lines and a few other things. But that being said I'm loving my 350, who needs a sound system when you can hear that flat plane scream. Two American sports cars that can compete with some of the best in the world and be alot more affordable. Well done GM and Ford!
These videos, of which there are many, prove one thing, time after time. This car extinguishes its flaws with the driving experience. It's a mechanical drug for the driving experience. If you don't want that experience, full time, every time, you'll choose something else.
The Camaro definitely looks better in black. The overall sillouette has always been nice it just gets a little weird within the sillouette and the black hides that well. The Stang looks great. My tastes have definitely changed as I've gotten older. I would have been all over the torque of the Chevy when I was younger but I really feel like the GT350 has the more exotic and therefore appealing power plant. Revs are fun and sound great.
I have a GT350. And after reading all the performance aspects of the Camaro ZL1, I had to go try one. I tried one in this exact same package. ZL1 10 speed. They talk about the theater in this review. And for sure, I love my GT350 for that. Even though the ZL1 is no doubt faster. I found the GT350 more fun. The ZL1 is far more livable daily in ride comfort. I think a long road trip, the Camaro is far superior. The 1LE package I've heard is really not livable in daily comfort. I may need to try the ZL1 in manual. But for the most part. I walked away happy with my GT350, yet I can find no fault for anyone who would pick the Camaro either. I would like to try a GT500. I think that would be interesting as well. If you are a manual snob like me, it is going to be hard to tear me away from the 350. The combination of high redline and the 6 speed it is heavenly to drive.
yes im a manual slob lol. never purchased an auto trans car. although that C8 is looking real good for my future purchase but gt350/R is my current attainable dream car. high revving, NA screaming motor, and manual gearbox. love it.
I couldn't agree more! Mark my words 20 years from now ... a low mileage GT350R will be selling for $120,000 as we all will be wishing to have that old school charm of a proper drivers car in manual with an exotic exhaust note
I have a GT350 also. Gave the ZL1 a try and it was awesome. But the GT350 has a special feel, some sort of connection. I just didn’t get that in the ZL1. My GT350 is actually supercharged and has about 900HP, with res deletes so the sound and power are visceral. Beyond the power though, the 350 just has an “it” factor. Ford is putting the 350 in the vault now with the 500 out. I think the 500 blows it away performance wise. But I haven’t heard a lot of reviews talking about the “it” to the 500...I think the 350s will always have that thing about them you just can’t put your finger on.
Chevy zl1: the business suit you can also box Mike Tyson in. Mustang Gt50r: Pajamas you can also do construction in. Always comfortable Action. Two different cars for two different tastes.
The GT 350 is going away in 2021 and that makes me so sad. This is the first Mustang that I would really lust after as a driver and manual Enthusiast. the sound is pure magic! and 8200 red line!!! All the buffet a driver could enjoy...
The last year of production for the GT350 is actually 2020 and I don’t believe Ford will be making another one anytime soon. They have the GT500 now and models like the Mach 1 are rumoured to be coming out in 2021/22. I own an ‘18 GT350R and I hope they’re done with them, they’re rare and I love that about them on top of the obvious. Haha!!!
I imagine the Camaro is like hiking through the Grand Canyon, it's an amazing experience you can enjoy for hours and days and never tire of it. The GT350R is like base jumping into the Grand Canyon, it's a holy-s**t event that scares you to your core and from which you need time to recover. But then you want to do it again. So I'd take the GT350R, even over the GT500, and just make sure I have a cheap daily driver.
@Lando Calrissian - n\No it doesn't, and if the camaro wins the difference isn't huge to the point of it "eating" anything. Its a drivers race stop being butt hurt because everyone prefers the GT350 over the zl1.
@Dale Walker Why would I want to do that? I don't care if some other driver can scare me on a course, I care more about MY driving experience. I also don't care about numbers, I'd rather have a car that provides a visceral experience. I drove a Nissan GTR and a 911 S back to back. That GTR was way faster than the 911, but in the GTR all I had was a sensation of moving fast and g forces. The 911 didn't feel like I was in a car at all, more like in a comfortable chair directly connected to the road. I think across the model line the Camaro has surpassed the Mustang as a track weapon, the Mustang got independent rear suspension, but along the way to becoming a global car it lost it's weight and dynamics advantage over the Camaro. The GT350 is the exception. Results from the GT500 seem to indicate it's building on the GT350. Now the lesser Mustang models need to follow suit if they want to catch the Camaro LS/SS/1LE/etc. Either way, it's a great age for pony cars any way you slice it.
Lando Calrissian - I’m not comparing numbers on a track that is unsanctioned for one! Where companies have been known to tweak their cars extensively to achieve ridiculous lap times. GM lies about a recall that killed people think they won’t lie about a shitty lap time? Please. And all the drives are done in different days with different drivers too many variables. I own a Porsche GT3RS and I never bring up the Nurburgring, makes you sound like a complete moron. That being said, the GT350 is an amazing track machine, I’ve driven one. Closest comparison we have are the motortrend head2head reviews where this Zl1 barely edged out the Mustang. You camaro guys need to get off the high horse you put yourselves on.
@@CoyoteFTW The ZL1 1LE beat the GT350 at Nurburgring by 16 seconds.... thats 96 car lengths... it was so bad Ford made the excuse of not running the GT500 at the Ring because "Its an American car and belongs on American tracks yadda yadda bald eagle BS"... Id say the Camaro "ate" the Mustang.
I purchased a new ZL1 1LE in 2019 and I'm telling you this car is a "beast". I just sold a 1968 Camaro show car with an 1100HP engine in it and it was a beast for sure but it could never do the things this ZL1 1LE does. I've had race cars, street rods all my life and I am here to tell you this ZL1 1LE is an amazing vehicle. It is as at home on the race track as it is on the street. I love the sound of the Mustang GT350R and it appears to be an awesome car as well but I have not had one hang with me on the race track yet. If I didn't already own a ZL1 1LE I would buy one.
The goldilock is the SS 1LE. I LOVE mine. All I added to it was the ZL1 1LE solid rear cradle bushings and you get the best of both worlds. The amazing Alpha chassis paired with the sharpness of the ZLE's rear-end without going to the track focused DSSV shocks. The GT350R is good, but if you are talking real world pricing and not MSRP, you are not touching a GT350R for anywhere close to what you can get a ZL1, ZLE for. If you look at the track times, the SS 1LE is just a tad shy of the GT350R. The ZL1 and ZL1 1LE are 1 and 2 steps above respectively to what the GT350R is.
Yes I owned a 2003 cobra for 5 years before I sold it . That was a mistake, I really enjoyed that car and now own a 2017 Gt 350 and 03 Mach 1 , enjoy them both too!
Hang around a track on track day and ask how many of the regulars are having problems with their 2nd engine. On the other hand, not nearly as many Camaros there.
I just bought a new 2020 LT1 v8 Camaro and its amazing. Sport exhaust red brembo fronts black wheels w Satin Metallic paint. It is amazing! Great first car! Lol
I recently purchase a 2021 zl1 and had it placed on the dyno for a before and after. It clearly peaked at 650 hp and 650 lb ft of torque. In track mode equipped with the 10-speed auto, with the aid of a GPS indicated top speed of 202 mph and a digitally measured 0-60 in 3.0 seconds air temp 54 degrees, altitude 5347 ft. On factory tires. The rear seats are a joke and waste of material and weight. The tires had to be warmed up significantly and got sideways several times during hard acceleration. Fun but scary. RPM in Littleton, CO is starting my upgrades with 960 hp as the goal. Serious upgrades to the fuel system, cam, Whipple charger, complete exhaust system rapped and ceramic coated kook headers and other mods have already began. I've witnessed them do upgrades to the Hennessy Exorcist which included increased hp, adjustable suspension components for more better handling, exhaust system rapped and ceramic coated. Love mustangs, especially the high revving flat plane crank, but find the zl1 more palatable than the gt350r. The gt500 is a whole other beast though. The zl1 and 2SS out handle them both, although the mustang feels lighter and nifty. It was a hard choice, but I'm very happy with my choice. Seems the zl1 is overall more refined and capable, especially at constant higher speeds in my opinion. They use quite a bit of fuel as expected. If I have my way, I would definitely own both.
I’m a 12’ 5.0 owner. This is my 6th different mustang going all the way back to the beginning. Obviously I’m a Pony fanboy, but honestly I just like them better than Camaros. The look, feel, sound, etc. I can sure appreciate others, but I’ll never leave the Mustang platform. Great review for both cars, new sub.
Wilfred Norman I agree, speed doesn’t tell the whole story here. Faster doesn’t automatically mean better. I’m sure the Mustang must be a really intoxicating experience.
@@Tain950- Despite having 100hp more the Zl1 isn't that much faster tbh, its a drivers race. Youre not going to be able to tell the difference or feel it.
Affordable because ten years ago, a car of these caliber would only be available in cars that cost well over 150k. Even today, cars of similar performance are well over 100k. Not affordable as in cheap, but affordable as in if you're a decently paid blue collar worker, you can get your hands on one.
One of them says in Shelby you always have power. Umm not exactly, you have to rev it up high to get the power. Camaro on the other hand especially with a supercharged engine has power all the time. You can easily speed up in 6th gear to overtake someone at 60. No low end torque in Shelby, you gotta downshift. I test drove both several times. Loved both but overall the Camaro won me. Can’t go wrong with either one!
I've been a mustang guy all my life until I made the mistake of test driving a ZL1 while shopping GT350's. I bought the ZL1, the chassis is just too good. While the new GT500 surely wins in a straight line, the 1LE ZL1 is still the better track car. Good time to be a pony car fan!

I own a 27 performance-pack mustang with quite a few engine and suspension mods but I still love the Camaro as well. But always like NA cars compared and boosted cars compared. Just seems more of a fair comparison either way.

I agree 100% with the red shirt guy. 400hp is really all you need. anything more than that you can't really use on the streets. But this is a wonderful time to be alive and driving. all these muscle/sports cars all have 500+ hp. just amazing! You guys are doing an awesome job reviewing cars.. love your reviews and car/audio shots of the cars in comparison. In my opinion, the gt350r is nicest American sports car to come out of the last few decades. The flat plane crank all naturally aspirated motor is a master piece and the car design it's nearly perfect from every angle while staying true to the mustang lines. The heritage, the racing history, the iconic stripes, and sound makes the gt350 the winner. I don't think any American sports car can touch this car based on innovation, looks and sound - out of the box straight from the factory. Damn, now i want one.
What we all needed. A real exciting car related video during a lockdown. Not another video review from home. I get and understand why it must be done. And understand. But a real video like this is always welcome. Be safe America.
So the Camaro is faster, handles better, brakes more effectively, weighs less, costs less and the Mustang wins because it's louder and they want the Camaro with a manual. Makes perfect sense.
I am a camaro guy myself and am totally in love with the new zl1's. I have seen maybe videos rating and camparing these cars, and in all of those videos they are not looking without a bias opinion or they just aren't looking for the right things within the cars. This is the first comparison video that truly looks at the cars properly and I believe had an unbias opinions going into comparing them. Thank you guys for putting out your honest opinions and telling us why you lean more towards a car. Awsome video, love the content.
5:30 "One of the big differences in the power delivery between this and that supercharged V8 in the Camaro is this car always feels ready to go and powerful." Huh?? Did you get the two cars mixed up? The torque on the Shelby is up high in the rpm range. You have to keep the Shelby revs up to keep it in the sweet spot for the torque. Not so with the Camaro, which has a lot more torque than the Shelby and a good portion of it is available across the rpm range. Seems like strange statement.
@@danielr.6905 Yeah, the 350 is a bad ass car, love the sound of the flat plane crank. But you need to keep the revs high compared to the Camaro to stay in the sweet spot for torque.
I'm usually a Camaro-biased fanboy but damn that GT350 earned my respect! Sounds amazing, looks amazing, drives amazing! They made an absolute beast of a car with that one, too bad it had to go
Camaro is like a Porsche and the GT350 has power all the time.... noooooooo! I own a GT350 and power kicks in at 3850 rpms and the Camaro does not compare to any porcshe! Come on guys. Both cars are bad ass though... can deny that!
I thought my m4 was fast but got my ass spanked by a camaro but I did not notice the exorcist label until the 1/4 mile was over but positive I would kill it on a race track
I drove both, both fantastic but I bought a ZL1 6 speed. The steering of the Mustang is way too vague compare to the Camaro and indeed the Chevy is a far more advanced car especially the chassis. The Mustang gives you a more analogue or visceral feeling and the sound of the engine is world class but it wouldn't be nearly as fast as the Camaro on a race track. Here is the U.S it is almost impossible to find a GT350R at MSRP, dealership wants premium up to $20K which made my decision a no brainer.

I guess comfort/control is a bad thing for the reviewers? That’s why so many Mustangs end up in the ditch or plummeting into crowds.
Complains that the suspension doesn't give feedback, but doesn't put the track orientated car in track mode
I have a 1LE. You should have tried track mode on that smooth road. The suspension in track mode feels way more athletic then sport.
Track mode makes me feel like my teeth are about to get yanked out on every pebble lol
That echo through those canyons had to be epic!
I have a 2019 GT350. The engine noise is so great. And the handling is awesome. Best car you can buy for under 65k.
Congrats
This is strictly my opinion but the GT350 is just more special than the ZL1. The engine and the sounds it makes is absolutely amazing!
No doubt about that, the flatplane in it is wicked!
I’m ok with a 400hp “gentleman’s” agreement. Maybe then ford or Chevy will design a car that doesn’t weigh 2 tons.
The Ford GT has entered the chat...
Rinzler quick edit here: An affordable car that doesn’t weigh 2 tons.
I'm not ok with a 400hp gentlemans agreement put in what you want. Alot performance cars are heavy. Ferraris are not light, lambos, astons, bugattis
The combination of high redline and the 6 speed it is heavenly to drive.
yes im a manual slob lol. never purchased an auto trans car. although that C8 is looking real good for my future purchase but gt350/R is my current attainable dream car. high revving, NA screaming motor, and manual gearbox. love it.
This was the perfect comment !!!
@Josh H wow! Awesome! You’re lucky to afford this car 👏
Paul, Place the ZL1 in Track mode. You want information overload and beat you up while driving, Track will do that for you.
Thats what I was thinking. Track mode is for feeling the road and bumps. I keep my SS in track mode unless on rutted city streets.
Chevy zl1: the business suit you can also box Mike Tyson in.
Mustang Gt50r: Pajamas you can also do construction in. Always comfortable Action. Two different cars for two different tastes.
I wouldnt box Mike Tyson in an IronMan suit let alone a buisness suit.

The GT 350 is going away in 2021 and that makes me so sad. This is the first Mustang that I would really lust after as a driver and manual Enthusiast. the sound is pure magic! and 8200 red line!!! All the buffet a driver could enjoy...
The new Mustang will be here in 2022 and I'm quite sure that a new GT350R will fallow.

@@Solismig002 where do you see that at?

Yes it looks like a Fisher Price toy.
You are both higher than a kite
Gotta give ford nostalgic credit putting the 3 sharkfin led lights tribute to the 65 .. Mustang owners will understand

Hang around a track on track day and ask how many of the regulars are having problems with their 2nd engine. On the other hand, not nearly as many Camaros there.
Yes, at track we will often see 5 or more gt350s and almost never even see a camero (which is too bad).
Gents, you’ve hit it out of the park with this one... very much in the mould of your epic M3 vs QV video. Brilliant work!
I'm a JDM fan but if I wanted a piece of American muscle in my garage, it'd definitely go to a Mustang.
I’d imagine because it sounds more high pitched similar to the JDM engines

I’m a 12’ 5.0 owner. This is my 6th different mustang going all the way back to the beginning. Obviously I’m a Pony fanboy, but honestly I just like them better than Camaros. @@Tain950- Despite having 100hp more the Zl1 isn't that much faster tbh, its a drivers race. Youre not going to be able to tell the difference or feel it.

Lease them now..
If they have value in the next 3 or 4 years buy them if it's good for you.
Affordable because ten years ago, a car of these caliber would only be available in cars that cost well over 150k. Even today, cars of similar performance are well over 100k. One of them says in Shelby you always have power. Umm not exactly, you have to rev it up high to get the power. Camaro on the other hand especially with a supercharged engine has power all the time.

Is the mustang still having problems with markups? I thought it finally started to die off. I never knew the zl1 had markups.
You can get a low mileage Gt350 for around 45-50k. Bargain. Ford 💙
So the Camaro is faster, handles better, brakes more effectively, weighs less, costs less and the Mustang wins because it's louder and they want the Camaro with a manual. Makes perfect sense.

The torque on the Shelby is up high in the rpm range. You have to keep the Shelby revs up to keep it in the sweet spot for the torque. Not so with the Camaro, which has a lot more torque than the Shelby and a good portion of it is available across the rpm range. Seems like strange statement.
