20 years ago, my buddy had a z400 with a lone star frame and long travel. One of the best quads I've ever ridden.
New color scheme is absolutely beautiful! Hands down!
I have an 89 Quadracer--they are an underrated machine. They don't handle as well as the R but with the right mods that engine rips. In case you didn't notice, the A-arms on the 89 are white. The frame color is Champion Blue, but Ford Blue is a close match--which you may find in powder coat.

Your enthusiasm for fulfilling your childhood dream is contagious. While watching this video I find myself grinning ear to ear. I'm not into retro quads like you are but I do enjoy watching your videos because of your excitement and sarcastic sense of humor. And your skits are funny as hell too. I understand about being super excited about something and there is no one else around to share that excitement with. I'll tell my wife about something and she's like "Yeah okay, I don't get it. It's just a thing to me" lol

Been watching for I wanna say a couple years now, but your videos remind me of my father and I as a kid working on quads in the garage and this restoration reminds me of when we used to go to Action Honda in FL and id smell the New Tires and Plastics in the showroom while my dad talked with the parts counter....Wish we could live in those days forever and you are creating a small piece of that

Awesome video Michael. Love the direction you're taking with it. The blue definitely pops more than the black. I agree with putting 400 on the rear fenders too.
Love the idea of the blue. It would be cool if you did a rendering of it with a blue hood around the lights. You always do the coolest builds no matter what direction you go with it.
My side plastics showed up the exact same way, one was mint the other looked roughed up a little. I wasn’t worried about it because of the graphics going over it

You are really doing what my ideal Z400 would be. When I still had mine, I got the frame painted blue, and was working on graphics to mimic the LT500, but with a big '400' down the rear fender. I can't wait to see this one finished
I like the design , like the colors, i think gold rims would be pretty cool instead of the black or polished wheels

Blue decal on the front around the headlight to look more like the 250. Silver heel guards.
When I got my 2004 z400 back in 2008 it was white an black an show room condition it was my dream quad I’ve always wanted lol I rode it for years an that quad was reliable an fun . Then before I sold it I freshen it up with yellow plastics an new bumpers an the thing looked sick . I regret selling that baby . I’ll get another z400 soon it has to be all original and I think I like the white an black plastics better than yellow . But this is ganna be a sick build bro your ganna love this quad once you get her running good

What got me to your channel was I bought a 98 Honda 300ex to rebuild then a 03 raptor 660 to rebuild I have watched all of your mid quad wars and all of your build videos hoping my raptor 660 turns out as great as yours did
Yup had a brand new 03 kfx400 front shock tower mounts cracked and the hollow swingarm pivot bolt broke and was sliding out while riding luckly i noticed had low hours on it too. Had a solid swingarm pivot bolt made since the dealer and Kawi wouldnt do anything about it. I did a whole gusset kit on my frame back then.

What a great video. I’m new to your channel. I’m “budget building “ an 04 z400 for the first time and I’m learning a lot from you. The more I take apart the bike the more of a story it tells. But it’s fun trying to find used parts.

Hey Mike, I love the retro theme for the Z400. I was super stoked when you first mentioned it in the video. I have owned a z400 and a Lt250r back in the day. I had a blast on my z400 but had to sell it when the 450s came out to get one. But…. I still own a 1989 Lt250r, it’s just such a fun machine and it’s nice to be able to change up a weekend from the 450. Can’t wait for the next video to see the z400 come together.
This is a positive direction for this project to go in. FWIW, if you're going to do the heel guards in blue, you might as well do the bumper.

Love the idea of the nostalgic Lt250 inspired build. Those quads started started the sport quad revolution, so it's only right to honor them.

Another awesome video! Thanks for sharing and The idea of an actual period correct rebuild is so awesome because you just don't see anyone ever do that. Getting OEM cosmetics these days is almost like buying the aftermarket crap ... it is hit or miss if you are going to get a good part or not. I bought an OEM headlight for my 2005-2007 400ex and the very first ride in the rain, it leaked inside and I had to tear it apart and re-seal it ... also my OEM rear fenders were crooked! I have had other imperfections with OEM parts ... you just never know. It has gotten much worse after 2020 (after the global virus meltdown) ... I can't wait to see this machine when it's done!
I am envious. I have a blaster with a 300cc 4stroke modified into it, one of my projects that is just standing for almost 2 years. Having a full time job does not allow you time on projects.. good luck with the build.

Definitely do the retro 400 on the back fenders . I would also try to photo shop the front hood “wrapped” with the blue, so that the blue hood area matches the 250. Might look a little funny, but I’m curious to see if it would look good !

Decals looks really good and i totally would go with the 400 on the rear fender with the same font and colors replacing the one on the side.

If you want more blue around the headlight area, Use the headlight surround off the kfx400 and recolor it blue because originally they’re black.

I have an 08 SV650 motor in the garage, ive been waiting for a Z400 chassis on marketplace to do a swap.
I think it's badass and you should carry on with the theme you have going now. can't wait to see the quad get put together. Reminds me of my first quad. Had a 1986 Honda 250x, wish I could find one. Keep up the good work and content. Can't wait to see what's in-store for this year!!!!!

Have an '08 with PEP shocks, long travel LSR arms, Houser stem, & Precision stabilizer. The motor is a 462 stroker, ported, 13.1 CP piston, Ferrea +1 valves, Titanium wrist pin, FCR 42.5 carb w/450R intake & big K&N filter, Dyna ignition, etc. The quad runs strong and has humbled many 450's and Raptors 😉
Looks killer with the retro design. Maybe change the Z400 in the mid where it is originally to faded blue instead of black. Love watching your work, such a perfectionist.
